11 October is International Coming Out Day and Oogachaga will be celebrating October with two events related to Coming Out on 19 and 26 October 2013. More detail will be available soon.

We shall also start October with this inspiring video. Wentworth Miller shared about his struggles on whether to come out after working so hard to fulfil his dream as a actor.

19th October is also the anniversary party day.  Remind me of Celebrating Mature Men when the host proclaimed the first quality to look for in the life partner is filial piety or a moderator here  did not advise a virgin on handling come-on by a friend when the Taiwanese ambassador for AIDS claimed he contracted the virus through fellatio.  Fishy.

Ready to come out? Check out some of the following pointers.

  • Be sure that you are ready to come out rather than feel pressured to come out.
  • Tell one person at a time. Start with the most accepting person.
  • Test the water, find out how they feel about LGBT people.
  • Have a supportive person or ally.
  • Read up and be ready to answer a lot of questions.
  • Pick a good time and place so that the conversation will not be interrupted.
  • Be ready to teach or educate the person.
  • Have a contingency plan for safety if necessary.
  • Explain why are you coming out.
  • Do not come out in an argument or to hurt someone.
  • Be prepared that the person’s first reaction might not be how he / she actually feel.
  • Do not expect him /her to adjust right away
  • Acknowledge that some people will not accept it, no matter what is said or done.
