Hypothesis

What is the consequence of not paying break 2 year contract fee in Singapore? Please share experience. I don't want to hear make payments by installments etc. Suppose I straight up don't want to pay. What is the consequence? Members can don't reply if you are uncomfortable, guests and lawyers are welcome to input.

Asking on behalf of a friend but yeah I know you acid plums won't believe it. Just take it it's me if you feel happier this way. :P

The 3 telcos have a common database of blacklisting undesirable customers. Once blacklisted, you find difficulty in signing up for services.

Now, for the break fee, technically you are liable but in reality it is very difficult to enforce and recover back by means of the law.

You cannot be made bankrupt for couple of hundreds.

What is the reason for not paying?

Not relevant to the topic. :)

Some choose to be cheeky while others have no choice. Let's leave it at that. The world have all sorts of people who react differently when presented with a problem.

Once you signed a contract, it is legal binding.

The very responsible staff will remind you of the penalty of terminating the contract prematurely.

And this is Singapore.

You may hide but you can't run... or rather run to where...

So live by your means and stop thinking of weird ideas to evade such payments.

Migration appraisal - anyone's guess.

There are weirder things going on daily in our lives right beneath our nose.

Anyway it is just a hypothesis discussion.

I appreciate your input here Abang.

I worked in the call center for a couple of months before some years ago.

You will get blacklisted, and I think the list is shared through out SG government database, they will try to contact you, and depending on the sum you owe them, they will also file a lawyers letter . yes I've seen them file lawyers letter better, it's not tough, just a word from the supervisor and there it goes.

Remember, this is Singapore, you can run but you can't hide.

Mind asking what will happen when it reach beyond the stage of small claims tribunal charges. Can an individual default on outstanding debts with an exchange of jail time or they will still continue to let that said offender loose on the streets?

I'm very tempted not to pay Singtel my bills cos they suck so badly.

I read on Hardwarezone that if you refuse to pay they would send you reminder letters, followed by a warning letter that you will be charged. But most people who "shared" their "experiences" of not paying up bills end up having the telcos doing nothing to them, and their IC number is merely blakcklisted in the company's database so you can never sign a contract with them for any services

Honestly, why bother to tarnish your credibility and reputation for a mere hundreds of dollars.

You dont stand to gain anything...

some people r just trying their luck and trying to be funny and tot they can get away every time.  e.g. credit bad debts, house rental etc.  its good to let them learn their life lessons.  no mercy.

Will it affect migration appraisal?

Unlikely, unless it get recorded in Credit Bureau which is open to credit check. As of now, only financial institutions can made report against you.

It will not be heard in Small Claims Tribunal as the amount is negligible.

They merely send out Letter of Demand, which are "purchased" from lawyers. You can buy such demand letter too.

The most extreme method is probably a debt collector who receive 30% of the recovered amount, so to justify his work your outstanding must be substantial.

Just to share abit more, I have seen many EP, S pass or work permit scooting off with unpaid bills, whether it's telcos, SP Services, Credit Cards etc..

Well, I suggest that your friend call up Starhub to find out (seriously) - unless there is a Starhub rep here who is willing to stand up and say it plainly to you. Broadly, of course, Starhub can take two forms of action; Legal or Non-legal (not necessarily criminal LOL). Some of those actions have been mentioned above. It is truly up to Starhub on how they will want to view your friend's case.

On the very much off topic issue of migration, it really depends on what kind of migration.... Emigration or immigration. For the former, different states require certain checks and accreditations/qualifications etc. so it depends really. For the latter, please refer to www.ica.gov.sg - the website is quite detailed and if you need specific clarifications, please do not hesitate to have your friend enquire from them directly.

I don't suppose you or your friend want to solely rely on this forum to get information before making those very important decisions? :)

Please get proper advice. Good luck!

A truly accomplished wallflower.....
Not an expert so if you're gonna rely on my advice, please keep in mind to do it at your own risk.
