Price Difference Between Ntuc And Those Value Shop

4mature

Recommended Posts

As long as you have tried and used those products from those value shops (of course you find it ok) -  then continue to buy from them. The savings can be quite a huge amount.

IMO:

If I want fresh produce without any worries, I would go Cold Storage.

If I want canned food / detergent /  packed items -  I would go Fairprice (unless Cold Storage on offer and it can be cheaper than Fairprice).

point is someone comment ntuc finest's wagyu beef looks like it's on atkins diet. Beef sold at finest are by Culina.

So.......?

Culina must provide NTUC Finest the best finest wagyu beef Culina can provide?

NTUC Finest only get their wagyu beef from Culina and nobody else?

NTUC Finest wagyu beef cannot look like it's on the wrong Atkins diet?

If you are someone who buy fresh meat from supermarket, you will know the difference in quality between Ntuc & CS. Especially when CS has discount on fresh meat (which still look fresher than those in Ntuc), the price is even cheaper than Ntuc, Also, there are certain brands of organic vegetables (eg Zhenxing) which CS brought in & Ntuc does not.

Having said that, when it comes to groceries, I still buy from Ntuc.

From what I heard, different factories in countries as huge as china have different production costs, so some goods produced in certain factories can be sold at a much lower price than others, although the quality is not that much of a difference. They may insist certain factories produce goods for the "european market" are of a "premium" quality, which is sometimes based on arbitrary and very much subjective factors, thus selling at a higher price point than goods produced in factories for the "asian market", but the difference in quality is sometimes negligible and non-perceivable. Some retailers may even claim certain goods are meant for the "european market", so sold at much higher prices than goods meant for the "asian market" sold in the same shop, while the quality difference depends on who you ask, and may even be non-existent or a myth. The price difference is also dependent on different currency strength, so goods produced for a country with stronger currency will be sold at a much higher price in countries with much weaker currencies, while the quality is not necessarily better as proclaimed, just because they are originally intended to be sold to the "european market". So in practise, there are a lot of lee ways in pricing strategies which retailers can adopt, including bait-and-switch to satisfy their different merchandising and financial objectives.

COMPARE GOODS and PRICES with BOTH your EYES AND EARS, people. ;)

Just use yours eyes to compare their marbling density with those from meidi-ya and isetan supermarkets, and you can tell the STARK difference that explains the prixe difference.

Not to mention, the visual freahness and palatability. Ntuc finest wagyu beef looks frozen and defrosted 1000 times to me. :X

Talking of on-line shopping, I have this issue:

2 years ago, I supported a gay online shop and bought a microfiber towel costing some $30.

Just now, I saw the same thing at Diaso for $2... now, tell me how to support gay entrepreneur..

Back to NTUC self-service kiosk, the latest but very small  supermarket in Potong Pasir is manned by older matured ladies.

They may be slower in terms of speed but hey, they really gave the human torch.

Their smile and greetings are enough ....to melt your heart.

Who cares about speed.. and this is really a small community, no one is rushing home.

I also got a branded blue vest from him which got out of shape after a few washes...

Sometimes I wonder why people still patronise CS at Northpoint when NTUC is just nearby too? :)

Cos it is more atas?

Because the ambience is better and if you actually look more carefully, not everything in CS is more expensive. When the things in CS are on offer, it can even be cheaper than ntuc. So really, dude, open your eyes a little wider. A lot of the fresh stuff such as ham and sushi is of better quality than that of NTUC as well. The range of products in major CS branches such as the one in Northpoint you mentioned, tends to be better than NTUC as well. On another note, CS' marketing strategy has never been to compete with NTUC. It has always catered to the more affluent segment of the market with more gourmet and international products. So on the point of pricing, you're not comparing apples with apples. It'd be fairer to compare NTUC's prices with that of Giant's, which both tout low prices as part of their marketing strategy. Giant/CS' dried goods are also notable for their quality conpared to those from NTUC's housebrand. My shopping is spilt almost equally between NTUC and the Dairy Farm Group, if anybody is wondering.

Points noted.

But I think I am referring more to those inedible grocery items. Same item, same brand, same manufacturing country, same ingredients etc, but more expensive in CS. Yes, I think their customers are paying more for ambience. NTUC should switch to warmer lightings. :)

You choose a nicely sewn tie with a nice pattern from daiso and compare its quality with a japalang brand tie from takashimaya shopping centre that will cost at least $50. If you tell me the price difference is even remotely justifiable, I'll feel like slapping you. :)

Anything that i can get from fp, i wont get from cs. UNLESS, the pdt is only on offer in cs. Usually, cs will still be more ex even tho both are on offer.

I will also buy from cs if the pdts are imported by them. Also some near expiry pdts at half the price.

Other than that, cs are carrot choppers mostly.

What has this got to do with the country's soul?

High-class people go to Jason's Marketplace and Cold Storage, low-class people go to Sheng Siong and Giant.

Did I say anything wrong?

Hey guys,

Save on products that are for external use only. Pls dont buy food items from value shops because what goes into your body may cause you to spend more seeing doctors.

You have accused the value shops of food poisoning, you have defamed them.

Be careful of a defamation lawsuit coming your way.

Oh dear, seems like RA will die if he doesn't quarrel and pick up a fight with others.

Does your mother, your father, your aunts, your uncles go to ShengSiong or Giant? They were called "low class" by "ZoeTay". And RA is bashing "ZoeTay" for that. You have a problem with that? Maybe you are lower class than low. So naming them "low class" is actually a form of endearment to you. In that case, good for you.

its always good to do some homework before shopping. I'm a smart aunty shopper but not low class hor.

Do you know that sometimes there are price differences for a particular item in Fairprice, Fairprice Finest and Fairprice Xtra? There are times where one having a promotional offer while the other 2 don't.

Cold Storge prices also different from locations e.g. The store in town area in more expensive than the one in say, Yishun Northpoint.

I actually enjoy shopping in Mustafa .... It's messy and congested but what the hack. There are some many surprises to find products that you can't find elsewhere and the prices are reasonable. The ambient / environment makes me felt like shopping in another country.

Sheng Siong in Verge is big and comfortable to shop unlike their smaller branches which are overly congested.

Gaint supermarkets have lesser good deals now as compared to the time when they are still ShopNSave.

Daiso is always my favorite pass time be it in Singapore or in Japan. Their stores in Japan have more surprise buys and each costs only 100yen which is less than S$1.50.

The price difference is sometimes so great that it makes me worried about the quality of the cheaper ones. Even if they are parallel imports, probably manufactured from different factories, how do we know that the materials used/quality control/etc. are exactly the same?

Yup maybe toothpaste all tt still ok lah but if skincare products i rather spend abit more to get the normal ones

I recently read an article about how the products being sold in outlet malls in the US are of an entirely different category from those being sold in proper malls, even though they may share the exact same look and same brand. (http://www.dallasnews.com/business/retail/20131211-outlet-malls-arent-what-they-used-to-be.ece). My gut feeling is that the same applies to these parallel imports.

Daiso, sheng shiong, mustafa, shop n save, giant, ntuc xtra. The big 6s when it comes to surprise value finds.

Cold storage, jasons, marketplace, ntuc finest (sometimes ntuc xtra) for gourmet ingredients.

Isetan supermarket & meidi-ya are for the occasional mock-japanese people like me. :P

Korean supermarkets for the kimchi lovers.

Yue hua for the patriotic chinese proud of their "roots".

Of cos there is the thai supernarket at golden mile complex for the thai cooks offering bountiful yields of fresh herbs and thai veges at bargain basement prices.

Please, the class differential and social stratification in Singapore is widening.

Would you see HDB aunties or PRC whores shop in Sentosa Cove, suntan at Raffles Town Club, etc?

Would a China foreign worker go anywhere near the hip Holland V or Dempsey enclave?

You know it is widening then instead of propagating and exacerbating it you should help mend it and narrow it down.

Why made the country become such a sterile and unhappy place for people to live by holding on to such toxic and callous values.

Do some soul reflection please.

Agree. The only problem in Mustafa is that their items are all over the place. You need to do treasure hunting for the thing you want.
