That person "begging" for food is likened to gay people trying to socialise and seek affinity with another person. It is a very powerful word only a lost soul can discern. The poor have greater empathy for those struggling cause they probably know someone who has benefited from charity, or they have themselves at one point in their lives. Seeing the change firsthand will definitely make you more likely to donate. The wealthy, however, have no context these days.
