Recently my landlord has hinted that the rental for my 3room HDB located at Yishun,  will be increased from S$1,700 to $2,100 per month when my lease expires in March 2016.

We are both Malaysian.

My partner and I have decided to explore the possibility of living in JB ( apartments near JB Sentral are currently leased at RM1800).

Both Our working hours are 9am - 6pm, both our office locations are at Bugis area.

There are now shuttle trains from JB to Singapore 7 times a day.

Any BW members are currently commuting from JB to SG ?

Feedback appreciated.

You want to wake up at 4am from Mondays to Friday's? :(

Posted

I am currently doing that.

Wake up at around 445am, take a bus from home - JB Sentral custom, walk across the causeway, bus from Woodlands Checkpoint to Marsiling MRT, Marsiling MRT to Boon Lay MRT, bus from Boon Lay MRT to office in Jurong West.

Reach office at 820am.

The key word in this issue may be "Quality of Life", specifically travelling time between work-place and place of residence.  Working the "normal hours" in Bugis area, you are looking at around 4 hours every work-day, including the queuing, queue-jumping, quarreling, fighting, breach of trust by employees of Malaysian bus company that make me say "Malaysia Tak Boleh".

Try staying in one of those cheap hotels on Jalan Lumba Kuda, east of customs for a week.

How about the commute from office to home, what time do you reach home ?

There is a direct bus CW2 that stops very close to our office at Queens Street.

Googling CW2 bus online services reviews, the frequency service apparently is quite good.

Paying RM1800 rent vs possible SGD2100 is a big motivation to move to JB.

If we do get a unit near JB Sentral ( eg Skysuites at Bukit Meldrum - 5mins walk to JB Sentral) the commute time is not so bad.

No idea what the crowd will be like, thus will be a good idea to try out the route one work day !

For CW2, you can either buy the ticket from the ticket booth in Queen Street Terminal, or wait with others outside to pay directly into the drivers' pocket.

Why do you think garrpng "walks" across the causeway in the first place?

I only tried CW2 once when I went to HQ on Beach Road - i reached Queen Street at around 730am.

Going home - I am not too sure how it is like from Bugis to JB - But I know it is bad after office hours (esp Fridays). During my 8-month evening course, I reached took CW2 around 1045pm and I usually waited for 30 min.

The worst timings are Monday mornings, Friday evenings, evening before long weekends and working day (morning) after long weekends.

Stay there for a few days and try out.

No way for me ! I would rather rent here....

It's possible to get a large 400 sq feet room near workplace for around RM1800, with shared facilities. - Wouldn't that be more comfy and save inconvenience of commuting...?

Many Singaporeans are already doing what you are doing.

I think it's fine. But you will be tired and is that the kind of lifestyle you want?

The daily commute from my home to Bugis,  is in excess of 1hour.

Have you tried the Feeder Bus and MRTs at 745am ?

I like to save as much as possible, S$500 Rent vs S$2100 rent, the answer is obvious.

Maybe after a year or more I will move back to SG.

Not just the rental, --->  Food, haircut, toileteries, movie tickets, massages  are all cheaper in JB.

The only worry is "safety"... IMO --- > SG is really safe !

Would like more feedback from BW members who commute before we make that decision !

Actually there are many car pools to and from JB taking people to Singapore. You and explore on this

http://jbsglah.com/en

There are also many mini buses and factory buses (those blue Bas Kilang) taking people from certain locations in JB to SG.

But due to the heavy traffic at the customs during peak hours, each trip can be 2 hours long.

Very good suggestion. You must remember, once you sign the lease you may be locked in for some time. These day-to-day stresses can really put s toll on your relationship with your other half. So try it out for a week to see how it works out.

You have my utmost respect. For work, I take a feeder bus to a bus interchange. One stop only. I'll then take another bus from the interchange to my workplace. This journey is as good as end to end of the bus route. It takes about 1hr 10min. In summary, I leave my house at 7.45am and reach office at about 9.15am.

I would consider my commute quite straight-forward n I am hating it. It's been 4 years alr but I still cannot get used to it.

Garrpng's journey to work is really tedious. I think if I were him, I would be too exhausted when I reach office. Haha

For Skysuites:

1) There's no fixed-line broadband internet available. Don't believe any agent who tell you the line will be installed soon. I understand lots of tenants there subscribe to SG telco's mobile internet with monthly quota. Are you fine with that? Do check what internet options are available before you rent any place in JB as internet connectivity/plans are very poor over there.

2) Traffic noise is very bad. Most likely you've to close all your windows and use air-con.

3) If you very much prefer Chinese food, then do recce whether there's any nearby. Most makan places in JB are malay or indian. Otherwise you've to take cab/bus just for your meals. Damn laychey.

Earning Sing Dollars and stay in JB, very fast to get rich..he best choice.

Standard of living in Singapore is very high, not worth to stay, but Singapore Dollars are super strong, working in Singapore is he BEST. Convert to RM...we can have all the luxuries.

No need to rent in Sentral JB...just buy a unit to stay. Properties in JB are very cheap.

The only trouble is go in go out of he country.

I have few Malaysian friends stayed in JB, who are Singapore PR, ride a motorcycle to work in Central, Singapore. One month can save 90% of the salary. Malaysia petrol are very cheap...his one month petrol money are RM240,around S$80. Everyday buy foods in JB and bring to Singapore as lunch.

I have a Singaporean colleague doing this, except he drives. He rents out his entire HDB flat and uses it to pay for his JB home mortgage.

If you ask me, I think the time issue is a great sacrifice. Since you're Malaysian, working in Singapore is a real bonus and from the sound of it, it doesn't seem like you'll be applying for PR or citizenship. Maybe the mentality that you're here to work rather than live would help? Just think of the savings you'll get from the time investments, in the long run, you might just be able to retire more comfortably than most of us here in Singapore.

I travelled to sg for sec school last time. Waked up 5am, bus came at 5:30am. Arrived school 7:15am-7:30am. Every morning like that. When it becomes a daily habit, you will not feel the hardship. Yes you will save a lot if staying in jb. A 3 bed room house rental in taman century only cost about RM1200 per month aka S$400.

But we are not contributing to Singapore's GDP

Spot on - "time" issue   - time vs $.

Less time but more $.

We can rent a room for S$700 - $800  in HDB - 2 person cramped into a room ......

Common Room vs 581 sq ft Studio Skysuites (or any condo)  S$500  JB

base on my past experience, i stay in jb and work in sg but the travelling by cars wasn't bad at my time.

the exchange rate from 2 time to 3 time wasn't really that fanstastic unless we are saving money for paying debts or future house.

the jam is also not my real factor, because some how you get to use with it for 3 hour delay - frankly i go back early also nothing to do

the real isssue is : safety.

my car was break at my jb door steps - total is 10 times (window break, tire gone, backbooth whack, etc)

my house behind was break in - lost items from behind like chair, fish tank, aluminium steel furniture etc

my dog was poison

my house was stomped by 4 stranger several time, laptop, handphone, cash, watch and bags - not one time but several time.

this is not one time affairs - several time until no point to report police station.

i was rob by 2 men on my way home at my house nearby at 7pm, early morning while jogging.

i was kena beat up at badminton court by gang - nokia cheapo hp snap, my friends also

this is not about my unlucky, not about i show off with hp or watch, is about the worst situation in JB.

plse dun say to me...stay at home dun go to dark spots....i don't stay alone infact with my family - also really not worth the risk.

rental is cheap but safety is not

exchange rate is fantastic but being rob your saving is not

i m not trying to create fear for you, this is a real life situation there.

i quote my classic friend cases, his condo with tight security but when he reach home...his house is empty as if he move house. The security guy say...he is moving house, camera blur and distort, can't see lorry car plate and police think is inside job.

losing money, property and other is nothing

your family or your life is more importance - i decide to back to sg for my family safety.

With the declining economy in the world , these type of crime will certainly happen more often ! Especially if you are alone most of the time , driving , walking , at home , robbers usually target singles or old aged in those countries ....

I am sorry to hear that.

I have been staying in JB since 2012 and I lived in Singapore before that.

I totally agreed because I didn't feel like crossing the causeway to JB at all during those days. I felt extremely unsafe when I walked around the city, esp when CS was still under construction.

For some personal reasons, I still made the decision of staying in JB.

We just have to stay vigilant wherever we go. There is almost nowhere in Asia you can find a safe place like Singapore and Japan.

Rent aroom & not the whole hdb & you will be able to save a lot of money.....SG is still better.......that is my advice......

Posted

Inbody123, as u mentioned, get a room in HDB instead. $700 or lesser can find. Then split the cost. Find a good landlord. I rented 2 of my rooms to 2 Malaysian, I give them all the freedom they want. Eat, cook, washing, bring men home, I don't care. 1 is paying $550, the other leh, sigh.... don't wanna talk about him. Useless fella. Best is rent those old auntie. They will wash the clothes for u if u pay them extra. And some are gay friendly.

Staying in JB, why wanna waste time on travelling.

When rent increase, its $2100. ( u cannot move to another low rental one mehz, Singapore not only his flat for rent)

Malaysia RM1800 , estimate $600.

Monday to Friday, u have to waste about ADDITIONAL 4 hours travelling per day. So one month its 88 hours.

So u save $1500 with additional 88 hours of jam, or more.

With 88 hours, are u able to use it to get another job instead? Not to mention if u moved to another owner with same rental. Can u cover the $1500?

And u can prevent those break-in, kidnapped, robbery, etc. So how much losses will u expect per month?

My Malaysian workers, who travelling in & out, they drive bike everyday. And they complained to me - they themselves also kena house burglary. They themselves don't feel safe, why should u? And the police there leh...... hahaa..... its better u go ask those Malaysians what they think.

WP means only one job, you cant MOONLIGHT, kena caught they will deport you.

A "couple" staying in a "rented room" is not the same as living in our own pad.

A rented room can never be the same if compare to the whole unit.

Lots of freedom are restricted no matter how open minded the landlord is.

Safety is the only issue bothering us.

Do not flaunt your wealth ( anyway we have none) , do not go around saying "cheap cheap", Be Street Smart.

Singapore is very safe - this one I have to agree.

Inbody123, u already paid $1700, that's $400 more, not $1500.

U unable to find another place?

Presently housing is selling below valuation. Supply more than demand. Really.

Therefore, it shouldn't be that hard to find another place with same rental, or even lower.

Or find a gay landlord lor. Me, my tenants all walk around in underwear. Naked also can.

Don't mean to curse u, don't take it the wrong way, don't save the $1500 to see doc for injury(robbery, kidnap) or to pay for the losses.

Thinking too much is a burden.  Perhaps, ask yourself what motivates you the most?

Should you find cutting cost is more important, let this be the motivation.  Start looking into that possibility (Go into JB and look-see for the right living space.  Check out the rent.  Check out the travel conveniences.) or probably just go for it.

At the same time, visualize yourself living in JB and working in SG.  Will you overcome the long hours/journey to and fro?  Yes, granted that lifestyle will change and, probably, you need to adjust on your comfort zone too.  Are you willing to accept it and yet be comfortable?

How about your health and state of mind?  Will you be able to overcome the stress that may come out from commuting (punctuality to work place, long queues, crowded buses, immigration, etc) daily?

I know of a guy (not close though) who does that, ie staying in JB and working in SG.  His mum is in JB and that is his motivation - that he can keep an eye for his elderly mother.  He owns an SG car and that, probably, makes it easier for him.

Having said all these, I know it can be a daunting decision to make.  However, it is usually our motivation that keeps us alive.

Inbody123,

If yr mind is to save cost, then I would say - u are not.

In front of u is between a WANT and a NEED.

WANT - is a place of your own. Can screw from one corner of the house, to another corner. That's why u are paying $1700 now. Without the increase to $2100, why u never stay of JB in the first place. $1500 is money, $1100 is not money?

NEED - a basic necessity. Can rent a room (which many other couples also do that), to save every cent for emergency or willing to travel and save every cent.

The thing is - u have more than 1 option, not 1 and only option.

Nothing is perfect in this world. And u come out with every excuses from all my suggestions. And what u intending to have is a WANT, not really a NEED.

So if its a WANT, u have to pay the price of it. that is to waste all the time in custom jam.

It is quite difficult to find a place for rent to males. 95% of the landlord are always looking for female tenants. Males rental is usually more expensive than females rental. So you be prepared to pay more than S$2100 monthly rent. I think S$2100 is lower market rate already. Most places in sg around 2300 to 2700.

Commute from JB to SG, time is always the factor to consider. Also, depending on the mode of transport, the waiting could be mere minutes to 1 or 2 hours, if you're lucky.

Best to take train. Earliest train, i think KTM one, is from 5am. Reach SG latest 5.30am. Immigration very fast clear one. Once you exit immigration you wait for bus to go bus interchange. Once at Woodlands or Marsiling you can then take the MRT to City Hall, then transfer to Bugis. MRT journey about 35-45 mins, depending on whether got breakdown anot. xD Bus to Woodlands about 15mins. Total travelling time 1.5hrs max.

Spot on!

The TS is mostly likely a prankster.

Nonetheless, the posts here are most helpful.

Highly recommendable.
