I was at NTUC and bought some stuff amounting to $8.50. So I pulled out a $10 note and a 50¢ coin and gave it to the cashier, expecting to get a $2 note in return. She took the money and sorted out the into the compartments respectively while I was repacking my stuff and when she turned with my change, gave me four 50¢ coins in return and she has already closed the register. So I explained to her the rationale for me giving her the 50¢ coin, and she replied in mandarin 'Isn't this also money?' What a bitch!

I wonder how 50 Cents would react if he finds out about this...

Let me share a ''comforting story''. I was in the queue at the supermarket the other day. Fairprice. A foreign worker was paying for his shopping with $2 worth of 5 cents coins. ''You are very patient and kind.'' I said to the cashier. ''Money could be a struggle for him. It is no big deal.'' She said. I know some places not accepting more than 20 cents of 5 cents coins. I was even told off once trying to use more than 4 pieces of the 5 cents coins. I then said ''If fatty the cashier, sure cannot!'' She laughed and said ''I agree with you.'' We were bitching about one of the cashiers who is not only rude but often giving customers a hard time especially if one doesn't have a small change.

It happens.  Sometime the cashier tend to overpaid others and they look for goons to cheat on in order to cover the shortage of money.  I advise everyone to be vigilant when dealing with supermarket cashiers, hawkers and shop cashiers.  Sometime, fast food also the same.  The money may not be big, it is ethical issues to remind those people handling cash of customers.

Actually, I must confess that I do that to cashiers also i.e. sometimes I pay a cashier $4.00 using eight 50 cents coins  :D

But I think your issue is the same as mine, in that we don't want to carry around too many big coins 'cos they are heavy and they bulk up the wallet.

Usually, if it happens to me, I will just accept the coins and then try to use them up at some vending machine, or during my next purchase.

If it bothers me a lot, I will just give all the coins to a tissue auntie or put them into a donation box.  :D

P.S.

If you have been to Australia, you will know that their coins there are even bigger and heavier. It's very irritating  LOL

Usually on my last day there, I will leave all the coins in the hotel room for the chambermaid to take.  :D

I totally understand how you feel! I tell you these people will gossip about you with their colleagues. Did she gave you a shitty side glance or stare? No manners!

I am also not surprised at the terrible service as Singapore is not known for good service. NTUC must retrain all their staff to knoe what is service culture. They must also know that we are their pay masters as we contribute to the millions of dollars in profits every year! Her attitude was totally unacceptable!

I tell yoi, many times when i ho ntuc to buy a drink or products amount to a few dollars, these cashiers, normally aunties will give me a 'dont waste my time irritated look' as i spent less than $5.00. I suspect they gossip behind my back to gossip that 'i am poor and cannot afford' to shop in NTUC!

Did you ask to see their manager? I think this is a serious issue.

LOL.

Why the LOL? Cant we Singaporeans make our views or displeasure known? Singaporeans were brainwashed since young never to question, never to ask, never to argue, never to think since kindergarden. Thats why when Singaporeans grow older, we became meek and quiet and silent, thats what the government want and desire so that we will not question its policies and just accept it.

So why cannot a singaporean question the bad service experienced by the cashier from NTUC? Is it because NTUC is owned by the government? The training by ntuc could be flawed otherwise TS wouls be given world class service.

Alsi some of these older aunties from NTUC have attitude problems as they think they are older and have more life experience so they look down on young singaporeans and gossip about them.

I think you are the one with attitude problem.

There's a world of difference between raising a LEGITIMATE complaint and complaining just for the sake of it.

Vote with your wallet shop elsewhere, if a thousands or millions of shopper do like what you do, surely that's an effective way to show them that you are not happy with their service standards.

I think the Thread Starter has a legitimate question even though it may seem trivial to most people.  But then there are some motives which are not totally clear to an outsider.  The customer gave her the extra 50¢ coin possibly because:

a)  He wanted to save her the trouble of picking up a coin from the teller.  Giving out a paper note is easier.

b)  He did not want to keep coins in his pocket/wallet.

The cashier gave him coins possibly because:

a)  She had too many coins in the teller and wanted to get rid of them. / She was running very low of $2 notes.

b)  She was not using her brains for the cash machine would have indicated how much to give as change.

c)  When he queried on her action, she realised she could have done better but became defensive, insisting that "it's still money".

How the cashier had acted is not the usual practice in supermarkets or other shops.  The Thread Sharter had only his bad luck to blame for ending up getting more coins instead.

Why are you insulting the cashier? 'She was not using her brains'mm so insulting to so many people. Tell that to people whose loved ones whose brain is not fuctioning! See if they can walk, stand, bath, eat, speak normally! Inse sitive prick.

Usually, I will just tell the cashier "Hold on, I give you 50 cents" before she prepares the change. Maybe she has already taken out the change and closed the cash register. Once the register is closed, she cannot open until the next sale.

If that happens, I will simply wait for her to ring up the next customer, give her back the coins when the register is open and ask to give me back a note instead.

Simple lah, some patience and understanding will make your day better.

Back to the main topic, so what's the 'bad service' in question here? I don't see any serious problem with the transaction.

Do we still have 1 cent coins?

http://www.mas.gov.sg/news-and-publications/parliamentary-replies/2014/reply-to-parliamentary-question-on-coins-usage.aspx :

Coins issued by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) are legal tender in Singapore for the payment of goods or services, up to the limits set out in the Currency Act. As specified in the Act, the legal tender limit for coins of denomination below 50-cents is  two dollars. This means that a vendor is obliged to accept any number of coins of denomination below 50-cents for payment up to two dollars. For 50-cent coins, the limit is 10 dollars. There are no limits for  payment by one-dollar coins.

Go cashless.  There are many options.  Back to topic, she returned the right change, whether notes or coins.  No case.

MAS may have stopped the production of the 1 cent coins but they are definitely still in circulation.
