It seems that yesterday Craigslist removed all personal ad posts. Does anyone know about what happened?

US government at work. Basically trying to prevent exploitation of sex workers and underage. Perhaps small percentage of ads and users were doing something illegal and spoiled it for all.

Craigslist Removes Personal Ads After Sex Trafficking Act Passes

"We can't take such risk without jeopardizing all our other services, so we are regretfully taking Craigslist personals offline," company writes

Craigslist announced Friday that it removed personal ads – a popular, albeit potentially dangerous service – from its regional websites following the passage of the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) in Congress.

FOSTA, or H.R. 1865, repealed a previous law that provided "legal protection to websites that unlawfully promote and facilitate prostitution and websites that facilitate traffickers in advertising the sale of unlawful sex acts with sex trafficking victims."

While Craigslist's personal ads were often filled with legitimate postings and "casual encounters," the website was scrutinized over the past decade for serving as a platform to sex trafficking. In 2010, an exposé detailed how Craigslist's adult section was an epicenter of sex slavery.

In a statement Friday following FOSTA's near-ratification – the bill awaits President Donald Trump's signature – Craigslist wrote: "Any tool or service can be misused. We can't take such risk without jeopardizing all our other services, so we are regretfully taking craigslist personals offline. Hopefully we can bring them back some day."

FOSTA also imposed stronger penalties on those who "promote or facilitate the prostitution of another person," as well as also punishing those "knowingly assisting" in sex trafficking. In addition to Craigslist's closure, a handful of Reddit subreddits that provided similar services have also shut down, Ars Technica reports.

"To the millions of spouses, partners, and couples who met through craigslist, we wish you every happiness," Craigslist added. At press time, the subsections in Craiglist's personals section, including the "strictly platonic" and basic dating services, now link to the company's FOTSA statement.

I know the US government forced Craigslist to take down the personal section in the USA, but why Singapore? US government has no authority, right?

http://onenightstand1.com/sex-hookup-sites and http://catch-women.com/2012/10/get-sex-site.html maintains interesting list of CL "personal" alternatives, useful for me.

"Sex trafficking bill" is the reason why CL removing personal ads (https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/23/17155110/craigslist-personal-ads-anti-sex-trafficking-bill), I think that idea is to stop sex trafficking and one of way is to close places where sex sells and CL is (actually was) one of best places for such activities... Just my thoughts about why CL done that.

US companies, even when they are operating internationally are still subject to US laws and the local laws of the country they are operating in.

So you will see companies like Facebook or Apple tend to be more LGBT friendly not only because it is the right thing to do, but also the US laws require that they make it so (though sexuality is not a protected class under Title VII) as a matter of equal rights and civil rights. This is where things can get complicated when operating under 2 sets of laws for businesses.

US companies can be prosecuted for breaking the law even when the crime is committed outside its borders.

So in Craigslist’s case, They have to remove the Personals section from all their global sites as it is the law.

Love.

Exactly, nicely explained the essentials of a new bill...

Where is the next best alternative. Please provide

Locanto (Euro based, hence the ponderous, ungainly-sounding name) is still up and running, although the layout/UI is weird (EuroTrash:D). I think that's where all the travelling escorts advertise now... Locanto ads (in Personals, not the rest of the site) seems much more skewed towards escorts than CL ever was though.
