MeowPrince Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Me.Been at it for several years. Film, digicam, DSLR, fonecam, and still shooting. Used to go for, and co-organise outings very frequently. A lot less now, with more workload. But I still go out to shoot at least every fortnight. Landscapes, macros, urban wildlife, architecture, still life, food, abstract series and streets. I do IR too. Guest Paperain Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Hi guys! I own a Nikon D3100~ still learning and picking up skills from everywhere! =)I actually bought the camera to take photos during outings with friends.. so i am still very new to photography.. so sometimes good shots come by chance. =X
MeowPrince Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Paperain, ah, photography is all about light. Good shots never come by chance, though good chances do occur, it takes some effort to make them goo d shots. Was taught that by an old old guy several years ago. A lot has to do with what/how we see and how we think (ie, choose to act upon it). Any functioning camera in the right hands can be a good camera. Seriously. Instagram @the_meowprince

MeowPrince Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Hmmm... hope you don't mind my thoughts here...The Ion shot I'd dump it. WB is off, and the time you took it was just poor light. If you are very keen on the scene, go back another day/time when the light is better. The Marina Promenade shot, I'd quote my biz partner - "its not good enough...you aren't close enough...""...where are the eyes/faces..."For the display of vessels and urns, understand why you tilt. Some local so-called instructors like to teach about tilting "for vibrancy". It doesn't apply here, as the shelves are toppling over!(Ok, I really hate this kind of not-here-not-there tilts, very wishy-washy!)The lamps shot... this is a good attempt, you used Thirds to good effect, and there is a play on the shadows vs the lighting. If you can go back there again, re-shoot the shot with :-1. Active D-lighting on Low2. Picture Control on Vivid3. White Balance on Sunny + B3assuming you did that on P mode. Hope that helps, and that I wasn't too brutal. Sometimes, for even the most commonly shot scenes, timing and light can make a lot of difference. Below is an example of an overshot scene. The photo is unedited, and straight out from the camera. No fancy filters or stuff other than camera+lens+tripod, and of course, lovely light. MeowPrince Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Thanks for the advice! Nobody has been this honest before.. loland the picture u posted is amazing...99% of the other local forums/communities do not give proper critique, choosing to "thumbsup" every picture shared. And, no, my picture is just an above-average one, just a bare 5.5/10 IMO and with insufficient light. I'm still learning too. Hey, I'm interested too, but I'm not really good and I don't have a dslr ( though I hope to get one)Just use what you are comfortable with. Don't go splurge on a DSLR just because elsewhere "advise" so. Get one only if you know that you need one. I can understand the typical HWZ/Crapsnap chant of Buy-Buy-Buy. But there really are alternatives. If you really want to spend the money/bonus on a camera, there are always the slightly cheap mirrorless options - smaller and lighter. Of course modern handphones are packing in decent cameras too.Maybe someone nice could otganise an outing n give us newbies some tips n guide us along. Tt will b nice. That depends on what time will be comfortable to most. Most of the outings I do start from 8.00am or 5.00pm. If there is enough interest (for a small group of 3-5 participants), I won't mind customizing a newbie's outing here. My only demand is that participants be punctual to meet up, and be prepared to walk about for at least 1.5 hours as part of the outing. I'll outline it some in the next post. Instagram @the_meowprince
MeowPrince Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Newbie's outingThis will involve a meet-up, usually at a convenient spot, eg MRT station, and usually in a central location near town. Typical subject matter will revolve around common things we can spot around us, and common sights. The genres will be in abstracts, architecturals and scenics, with the occasional urban wildlife (if we are lucky). The outing will also include an extend debrief (and chit-chat) whereby we'd run through what everyone has seen/shot/understood, done at the end of the outing, in air-con comfort. Food/drinks is BYO.Duration : 2-3.5 hours, depending on size of group and how long/much you want to chatDates : Sat 11 Jun (late afternoon) or Sun 12 Jun (morning) or Sat 25 Jun (morning)Samples of the different genres you may encounter :-(with credits to/permission from Puppydr, AWong95, LMC)Abstract (Nikon D70)Closeup/nature (taken using Fuji S602 digicam)Abstract (Canon 60D)Streets (Nikon D70)Nightscenes (Fujifilm S5 Pro)Scenic/Landscapes (Fujifilm S5 Pro)Flora/Nature (Canon 350D)So this Sat 11 Jun 9.00am good? I'll cap the group at 5 pax for closer interaction.Meet up point will be a convenient MRT/bus-stop around town area. Who is keen? Instagram @the_meowprince

If so, I guess I could borrow my sister's camera and join in some sessions that you may organize in the future. MeowPrince Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 me!!! but im not free hope this is not the last sessionIf there is enough interest, I'll be willing to do more than one session. See below also, please.I am keen to learn too but am not free this week.MeowPrince: Would a normal point and shoot camera be good enough to learn beginner photography? If so, I guess I could borrow my sister's camera and join in some sessions that you may organize in the future.boyzbe81 - it really depends on what you want to learn. If it is just the composition aspects, yes, it will suffice, but just. If you want to learn to control the exposure and effects, then so long as your PnS camera has A/S functions (Av/Tv for Canons), then it will just get there.About the OutingsA typical newbies' outing will have us meet up and I'll lay certain ground rules for the day. Then we'll set out and examine some basic composition rules, color and lighting controls and show you what to look for, as we walk along the route(s). At the end of it, we'll all sit down at a not-too-noisy place for a drink and a bite, and spend some time reviewing what you'd learned. That said, please do not expect me to teach you how to use your own camera, that is what your user manual is for!And since I do not charge a single cent for my outings, I'll ask that participants respect my timings (be punctual!), respect the place (dont litter or vandalise, or broadcast to the world), and respect the creatures that we may encounter. Those happen to be my overall ground rules.Outing SchedulesOther than Sat 11 Jun, I can also accomodate Sun 12 Jun (morning, same timing), and Sun 26 Jun (morning and afternoon). Unless there are people who'd like weekdays. I can spare one or two weekdays this month. Other than that, my weekends are already prebooked this month for a number of fetish-based shoots. Sorry for being frank. I am not a professional photographer but I do take photography as a hobby for years.
