1. The familiar BW logo had been with us for 10+ years. The style and colour of the logo shows its age.

We have always spoke among the mods that we want to refresh the logo after we've updated the forum technology.

2. Recently we noticed Clickclock topic http://www.blowingwind.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=23035 which featured his drawing talent. We have approached him to use his drawing talent to help us do a BW logo (pro bono) . Thanks !

3. Now to the BW Community at large, we need CONCEPTS for the new BW logo so Clickclock can draw it up.

4. Guidelines:

a. Allow people to relate to Blowing Wind Gay Forum

b. NOT vulgar

5. Share your ideas for the logo here. You can also send us PM / emails.

6. We thank everyone in advance for your ideas but need to also mention we cannot afford to pay.

I think the wind movement definitely still needs to be depicted in the new logo.

How about the rainbow colours? Would that be too complicating?

I forgot that there are many new readers who do not know BW origins.

BlowingWind the gay forum took its name from Bob Dylan's song "Blowin' in the wind".

http://www.blowingwind.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=14652 . It was the favourite song of BW the man.

From wikipedia

Although it [the song] has been described as a "protest song", it poses a series of rhetorical questions about peace, war, and freedom. The refrain "The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind" has been described as "impenetrably ambiguous: either the answer is so obvious it is right in your face, or the answer is as intangible as the wind".

So to your question,

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind.

The logo may be 'old' but it's the ORIGINAL logo...

I propose that a key guideline is that the new logo should be an evolution of the original logo, and not a new from scratch logo...

I hope you can understand what I am saying, and take due consideration to keeping to the originator's intent and spirit of the logo - it's all blowing in the wind...

One way to do the new logo is to use only typography with a few possibilities (non-exhaustive):

1. create one whole new set of fonts for "blowing wind" that gives a feel of FREEDOM

2. modify one of the alphabets to create part text part graphic to symbolise wind

I assume one key conceptual element of "blowing wind" is FREEDOM

(e.g. freedom in this forum to ask all kind of questions, to discuss all kinds of things other than those too politically-sensitive or too religiously-senstive or racially-sentive topics, freedom to live out the gay life, and so on)

I support this idea.

Lots of companies do that, to keep the original spirit of the brand. They just re-look the typo, or add a short message, and keep most of the original colors.

So, the customer/partner/reader or whatever immediately identifies them.

Well, I'm not a professional; but I'm pretty sure there are some good ones here ;) .

Good luck!

It is called branding. If the colors mean something, keep them, with perhaps a boost in tones. In BW's case, it is more likely to be the imagery of a face, the hair, and the wisps of breath. These are probably the elements that, as the founder(s) / owners of the forum, the admin team may wish to lay down as something to retain.

For the designer doing it, this is something to be mindful of, as a community with over 10 years of history will have something intangible to its logo. And this is often not easy to surface. But to discard it entirely could end up alienating a whole generation, oft-silent though it may be.

Please bare in mind that the existing graphic is more like a banner. Now it is understanded the forum needed a more universal kind of logo. In todays internet world, logos will be constantly resize from large monitors to small handhell devices. With that, logos should be more simple and clean with minimal approach. Surely, most of u would prefer to maintain most elements from the original graphic cos u can identify and have feeling with it, but lets look at the bigger picture, in a more international level.

Well, i say just let let the designers do their thing, too many ideas and suggestions from us will put a lots of restrictions to the designers to work their magic. lol.

Sounds so corporate but I am all in for a new banner/logo.

I agree with the general idea of updating the old logo so that it looks more fresh and relevant, instead of restarting an entirely new logo from scratch.

Just a few common checklists for a good brand element:

  1. Memorability: easily recognized and recalled in mind
  2. Meaningfulness: the spirit or attributes of the brand
  3. Likability: aesthetically pleasing
  4. Transferability: across various medium, platform, and formats
  5. Adaptability: flexible across time and space, perceived meaning is adaptable to people of various culture/race/age group/etc
  6. Protectability: just make sure BW will not get sued for passing off or trademark dilution of an existing brand

I would like to highlight point #4 here because it's the main area that I think is lacking in the old logo. Just keep in mind that the new logo should be translatable to different medium and formats. The possibilities are endless: T-shirts, collaterals, iPhone app, etc; the logo should have enough flexibility. The old logo is alright, but it's sort of lost in translation, like when the recent forum layout update was applied. (e.g. the logo above does not fit with the blue bar). And it's also lost in translation when it's cut into a square for the toolbar icon.

Sometimes a logo may be good in full color, but the rich details will be lost when you fax/print/make a copy in black and white, or when it's applied under a colored background. Thus, corporates usually produce their logo in varieties too: full-color, black-and-white, and inverted color (e.g. blue background, BW logo in white).

I would personally prefer a more vibrant blue to the one we currently have too, but I guess the designer will know better. ^_^

What about a rainbow planet (that spins slowly) - something like planet hollywood concept.

7 colors represent diversity

Planet represent international

Round represent gay

How about using images of blowing wind members(who are willing) and morph them into the image of a man?

In design, it's abt identification & connection. Dun have to be so literal or colorful. Could be as simple as typography but with a twist/accent/interruption? Judging from the topics dicsussed here, it could be so 'Alice-in-Wonderland' - fun, bitchy, absurb & 'touching'?

Posted

hmm. I'm diggin the evolution of the old logo, it's what i initially had in mind

Based on your drawing skills, the result should be good.

When can we see your draft?

Posted

Dear Hendry, Clickclock and the Mods,

there seems to be enough comments for a first draft to be made.

I know this will involve more work on Clickclock's part but may i suggest that we do this interactively?

i.e. based on what has already been said Clickclock comes up with a two or three drafts. These should be as different from each other as possible and yet still in keeping with the "spirit" of what has been said. (maybe one pure graphic, one a pure logotype and the third a combination?)

you then post them here and everyone can say what they like or not about each of the versions and clickclock then does another couple of variations.

Not sure how many iterations we should go through (if clickclock can work fast this gives ppl less time to comment....)

But i think we can quickly come to some consensus on what the best new logo should be?

just a suggestion. in the end since clickclock is a volunteer we should all accept his way of working.

look forward to seeing the new logo!

cheers!

Thanks Clickclock for offering your /free?/ service, I know designing service isn't exactly cheap.

umm did up a draft, what do you think? Tried to incorporate the blowing wind thing, Tried to include a guy wearing office outfit to represent a working lifestyle in singapore and a guy wearing beach wear to symbolize enjoyment when the work is done. To keep it short, being gay is constant throughout our lives be it work or play. You've mentioned that the answer is blowing in the wind, so so I did some flying documents that literally shows that the answers are in thw wind??e9wtxc.jpg

Thanks for your time and effort Clickclock :) I like the drawing.... but....

If one is looking for a logo then perhaps one characteristic is simplicty. The drawing contains good concept but I think the drawing should be used by Blowing Wind as some sort of decorative icon instead of being the logo. Just my opinion only.

For a logo, I think simplicity is needed

I intend this image to be used on the page when you first visit the forum site,

and I do agree with you, something simple and simbolic like the android phone logo. I'm comming up with a simplified version of this solely for the purpose of a single logo. will only do it if the above image is selected tho

If you so wish to retain the original blowing wind logo, BY ALL MEANS! tell that to the moderators/the people who ORIGINALLY created this forum, the people who actually have a say on whether or not they should keep their own logo.

I stand neutral in this, i;ll just draw whatever people wish me to draw

My two cents' worth...

Just the letters BW in small caps, with the face embedded in the b, in blue and green. Small tag line beneath the letters - blowing wind gay forum, the word gay in pink or rainbow hues.

Keep it simple and neat!

Learn to ignore such "guests" lah. Since you are the commissioned artist, then you can (within sensible limits) exercise artistic licence, as long as the owners of the forum have given it.

Food for thought - you might want to avoid similarity to the Andriod... colors notwithstanding, it can give cause to Google for legal action. Though the idea here is a good one, go for it!

I would like it with good typography like what Jeremy did but I would also like it to be an improved version of the old logo with the Lady of North WInd.

Maybe one with the lady of North Wind with typography?

"Well, I didn't know it would come to this but that's what happens when you're on your own."

Posted

alright, typography and lady of the north wind, ill keep that in mind and i'll come up with something

Thanks :)

Perhaps also give a little consideration to "Starbright-Sg" 's suggestion which I quote below:

Whether to use big or smal alphabets, I think "B"/"b" serves as a good potential to be a blowing face, while "w" can become the wind.

The above is more of a fun and modern logo, in par of the direction from the many social network nowadays.. I humbly suggest just because the name is Blowing Wind, doesnt literally need a symbol of face blowing wind out of their mouth. The name itself already explain that.

The symbol is up to your interpretation, without being too obvious.

ooo. i do like the latest version more than the first humanoid one. what does the first version of the bottom of the "g" represent?

clickclock:

i really do like the holding hands in the 3rd version.

my only quibble is that the ties make it all very executive or corporate. in your first (humanoid) version you ahd a work guy and a play guy. do can you change the second "I" "tie" into something more play related? (a guy in trunks? oops) ((and i guess a condom might be crossing some line? although to be honest there is a LOT of sex talk on BW.)

anyway, thanks again for your hard work!

Posted

oops you posted another one in the meantime! my prev posr was referring to the 3 alternates version.

i do like the jigsaw one too. miss the wind tho. whether we go with wind or not we should remind ppl of the old/original logo too.

Untitled-2-1.jpg TIme for a change. Design by anonymous.

I refer to Anonymous' design ---- it is humourous

The BW became a dick and a butt............ subtly representing the male gay community :D

This is currently my favourite ;)

Wonder anyone free to try alternative ways of presenting this dick & butt concept

.

.

yep... though dick-cum-butt imagery is also about love cum relationships, other than representing gay sex, and the dick and butt symbol is quite distinctive of the male gay community in contrast to the straight community and the lesbian community (though within the straight community, quite a significant percentage of them seems to engage in anal sex with the male penetrating the female butt)

So the logic can be seen this way:

blowing wind is an online venue for the male gay community and one way to symbolise the gay community is the use of dick and butt which is created using the alphabets B & W of blowing wind.

That is my interpretation of Anonymous' design.

Thanks for the comments, It can be made less obvious and "hidden", where only dirty minded gay guys like us will get the hidden message while the straights will only see it as "B" and "W". Also, i wondered did all of u get the hidden message at first glance or is it just after Permanent-Guest explain it?

in my opinion, I do find the design sleek and good. It's kinda no brainer for us to identify it has a phallic object and the butt haha. The thought of using such imagery is really creative and stuff.

Really? The butt was obvious, but I thought the white thing was fart, hence blowing wind. Btw clickclock, love your designs ;)
