I wonder what all the fuss is about this most talk-about movie sensation which has broken the box office record in Taiwan.

I have seen the trailer and am frankly only mildly impressed. But I think I will go and watch this film out of curiousity. It's been a while since I have gone to the cinema to support an asian film.

I was watching the news earlier on and was surprised and pleased to see the cast of Cape no 7 in town to promote this movie. Among the actors is the singer 林曉培. I love her singing and everyone knows that she has been quite unlucky for the last few years- failed career comeback, that awful accident lawsuit, slanderous news report, her dismal concert attendance...etc. Good to see that at least she is involved in the most successful taiwanese film ever made. Hope this film will somehow revive her career.

Also, one more reason I am eager to catch this movie is because I quite fancy 范逸臣. He has that dangerous edge about him that I find appealing.

I like the way the director planned his shot. For a 1st time director, the result was amazing. There were lots of very cinematic shots of a rustic town, backed by mountains and front by the sea. The people are everyday heartlanders going about their lives.

The pace of the movie is moderate and the sub-story behind the 7 letters slowly unfolds till the end of the movie. The sub-story was narrated in Japanese was about a teacher's love for his student. The mood of the movie captures the longing and regrets of the teacher of love found and lost.

The main story revolves around a failed musician making good with a bunch of misfit musicians for a warm-up gig on stage for a popular Japanese singer.

I think the acting was quiet credible for the actors. All put up quiet a good performance despite some very fresh raw actors. For those who understand the Taiwanese local language (Hokkien) some of the line are really funny.

I enjoyed this moderately commercial show with it's misfit actors, where underdogs finally succeeds in putting on a great show.

The piano accompaniment to the Japanese narration is sad and haunting and the tune will still lingers in your mind even after the show ended.

Here is the music I was talking about.
