The majority of employees believe that reducing personal time and work-life balance will help them achieve career and financial growth but the younger generation said they are not willing to do so, according to survey results from job search website, Indeed.

In its report, Indeed said Millennials and Generation Z employees said they are less willing to work hard to advance their roles. Whilst almost half or 46% of those aged 16 to 24 sacrifice time for better wage, almost 60% of the 45 to 54 age group do so.

Nishita Lalvani, senior manager of Indeed Southeast Asia and India, said younger workers are less confident that working hard will give them benefits that previous generations had.

Over three in five young workers or those aged 16 to 24 years old said they are looking to shift to a job that has flexibility and only 17% of those between 45 and 54 years old are doing the same.

Conversely, Indeed’s study said 69% of Generation X and Boomers said it's more difficult to achieve professional and financial goals for younger workers and mistake the youth’s frustrations for fear of working hard.

Can't say I fault them.

I worked for people who say you are lazy if you knock off at 8pm. They expect you to stay in the offfice till 4am. Then you go back at 5am, sleep till 7 or 8am. Then back to work at 9am.

It's not as though the tasks are urgent and cannot wait till the next day. It's just that bosses are kiasu and want to squeeze every drop out of the miserly wage they pay.

My colleagues will skive the whole morning and early afternoon. Only when the boss come back, do they put on the show.

My experience tells me it's not worthwhile to sacrifice your health for these bosses. Cause they anyhow fire people over the slightest things.

Absolutely,  u can love the company for a hundred reason but when company want to fire u, only need one reason.

Why youngsters dont need to work hard? Most of them do not need to support their families unlike the past generation.

Secondly, whatever their parents had eventually will go to them and most may not have too many siblings to share with.

Guest Age vs Choice

Young people have more options.   Many view freedom and independence as starting point for their job hunt.  It is in relation to how they were brought up, as many have supportive parents with stable background.  They also watched how their peers struggle and would not want to follow similar footstep.  They used their youth as corner stone to choose their life, before they became aged and rejected.  Thus, they see no time wasting  away doing what they prefer while still young.

You meant youngsters don't need to work at all, correct?

Certainly, people are more educated today and are wary of over demanding employers.

Well not everyone is born with a silver spoon and wait for inheritance. Like those who do one or two gigs per annum.

What youngsters yesterday and today are looking for is work life balance -- something that bosses here find alien.  Which is why they always ask for foreign labor. If you knew the terms on which they were hired, you will also think twice.

Issues of job insecurity put youngsters off marriage and  taking up home loans.

There are also non payment of salaries, CPF arrears etc. Common in private sector.

Youmgsters will eventually get married and settle down. Still have to work out those financial issues.

We should take advantage that not many people are willing to work hard.

But we should work hard smartly.  WE should be the most important subject of the hard work.  Work hard to be healthy with good strength and good posture,  so that the body does not become an obstacle to our goal to work for extended times.  Work hard on our mind to be able to concentrate for extended times, and our emotions to not be afraid and discouraged by the complexity of what we concentrate on.  Work to cultivate discipline, perseverance.  Then, we should dedicate efforts to learn correctly foreign languages, mainly English.  If we have the opportunity, we should work hard at a university to get an advanced degree.  We should work hard to find a challenging job that others don't want to do because they are inconvenient, and sacrifice some of sex, family, friends, holidays, vacations to advance in this job.  If Singapore does not offer opportunities for jobs like this,  because it has little industry, research,  we should not hesitate to move to a country that has it.  I would suggest America, but if you want to stay in Asia,  how about Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea?

Those who are less smart,  they will try to work hard in jobs that are common and convenient, to be exploited by employers that seek cheep labor. This should be done if necessary for a time, a couple of years,  but not as a definite "career".  If a job can be done by a teenager, a machine, a software program,  it is not worth "working hard" in such a job putting endless hours of our life in it. Then we should work just enough to go by, and work even harder on ourselves to be able to escape such a job.

Guest Confession

I find working hard without appropriate compensation is hard to accept.  It is just not me,  my time is precious, my effort is worth Gold.
