Probably the fermented fish sauce that is used in som tum.

man i love that smell. if you mix fish sauce (nam bpla) equally with fresh lime, some finely chopped chilli and a little garlic and sugar you have prik nam bpla, the most amazing sauce to go over rice or frankly anything. makes me wet (upstairs) just thinking about it :-)

I do not think it is fish... it's more like the fermented bamboo

OK maybe we both right... smelling different things...

but the smell is not fishy at all... more like a unique nose pressing smell that if you are not familiar with it - does not smell delicious at all...

The one you are talking about is more likely fermented bamboo. It's a bit, in my opinion, urine like.

You get it ocassionally too in some Japanese ramen.
