my friend lost his passport the same day he arrived in India, so like what we were told, we head to the embassy for help.

what shocked him was the officers there asked this simple question: "how do you prove that you even had this passport from this country in the first place."

I was like: WHAT!?!

If your citizen come asking you for help and you ask questions like this win liao lor. correct?

Luckily for him, he had a soft copy of his passport in an email (when he apply for exit permit last time) so he was able to retrieve the email from a PC in cyber cafe and print it out and go back to the embassy. just to prove he is a singaporean citizen.

lucky for him too.

lucky in a sense lah - i mean lose passport so suay right?

not meant to be a racist here or make any racist remarks - he is a chinese in india and already he had to prove his nationality. imagine an singaporean indian with no identity - die lah!

morale of this boring story, carry copies of passport with you in case you need it! at least store it securely in soft copy somewhere!

anyonewith any other tips to share?

I am so sorry to hear your friend's predicament.

As a good practice, I scanned all my travel document and credit cards with CVV (in separate emails).

Should I need them in dire times, I can retrieve them easily.

Also put the passport and important personal documents in zip-locked clear plastic bags.

You can see them easily and it is water-proof.

Keep them in the zipped compartment of your bag.

My personal preference when travelling:

Dress down.

Except when I have to clear immigrations, I hardly wear anything nice.

My staple of singlets, T-shirts and shorts suffice.

Should I need to "look better", throw in a small scarf - fashionable yet neat.

Really there is no need to flaunt the possessions.
