sws Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Hi there,Any ideas (whereabouts )of both cd shop named music junction n sembawang music ? Few years ago, saw MJ in causeway point, SM in junction 8 n lot 1 .........
member_757 Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 In this age and time, its all about digital copies. I also dont see alot of people in hmv nowadays.
bigdanbeam Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Sembawang wound up about 3 years back. The last time I saw MJ was at vivo but I think also no more liao. Go CD rama lor. Before they close down
Hcir Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 I miss the days of browsing tru tower records, sembawang etc.
Guest MJ Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 I think you can still find Music Junction on 2nd floor of Vivo, along the same stretch as Golden Village. At least, it was still there a few months back.
yhm_zzh Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Sembawang Music went bankrupt in 2009. I remember they were running a half-year long storewide 50% discount at all outlets, before suddenly announcing that they were closing at end 2009. Music Junction... the last "pure" Music Junction outlets were in Jurong Point and Tampines Mall... both have been closed down in 2010.The rest of its outlets have been renamed as MJ Multimedia. The only ones left are at AMK hub and Vivocity. The Suntec City outlet closed down due to renovations, not sure if it will return ornot.Anyway don't get your hopes high on buying music CDs in MJ Multimedia... 90% of their stock now are DVDs and VCDs. Seems like the only places left are CD Rama, Gramophone and HMV.
Guest maxiplay Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Gramophone also seen like going to die soon also, HMV still survive but the price and selection not as much then before...... sian also
yhm_zzh Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Gramophone also seen like going to die soon also, HMV still survive but the price and selection not as much then before...... sian also Yup... gramophone's now left with only 3 outlets, they closed their JP one early this year.As for HMV, I rarely go there, except during the summer sales when the prices are abit more "normal". Even then the sales selections and variety is not as rich compared with the summer sales a few years ago. Guess the only one thats going strong is CD Rama...
Guest maxiplay Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Yup, i agree, MJ was take over by laser flair and renamed as MJ Multimedia but then now laser flair also going to close down their first outlet at Lot 1. TS also closed a few outlet due to poor business. Haiz ~~~~~ digital copies kill discs, no wonder they always mentioned, support original, stop priated. 光碟的輝煌時代已經過去........ I like hard copies then download~~~~
abang Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Over the past 40 years since I started buying music, I have seen the changes in market trends.First it was vinyl that gave way to cassette tapes. In turn, CD ruled the world between 1985 to 2000.MP3 came and the rest is history. Gone were the days of browsing through the many items in Da-Da (Funan), Valentine Music (in Parklane), FuLeong (Chinatown), Sembawang (Raffles City - double duty with cruising), Supreme @ the old Plaza Singapura. Nostalgic, leh?Even now as CD prices plummet to just SGD 11, the sales are really very bad/poor. MP3 is convenient.. however to the true audiophiles, vinyl rules...I still have a small collection of vinyls bought in the 80s.... I just need a turn-table...to relieve those memories..
azimuth Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 The Internet killed a lot of businesses. I think the next wave of salvage would be the general retailers (supermarkets, travel agencies, department stores, etc) who are not quick enough to latch onto this platform to serve their customers. True that there will always be people who like to go mall shopping, but sometimes there are times we just want to shop from the comforts of our home without pressurizing sales tactics. :-)
glowingember Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 I used to buy from the first Sembawang Music Centre at Sembawang Shopping Centre in 1988/1989. Their business was huge then. Also bought from Chua Joo Huat at Far East. Though CJH was smaller in comparison to SMC, I could always get the CD I'd wanted. The young and tall boss was quite cute in an Ah Beng way. There was also Dada with a slightly more eclectic choice. Thought I saw Music Junction at Heartland Mall at Kovan. Not sure if the shop's still there. Looks like with 'free' music and iTunes, CDs and shops will vanish like the cassette tapes. After all, tomorrow is another day. ~ S O'Hara
yhm_zzh Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Nah, I doubt CDs will completely vanish from the market. It's just like vinyl, there'll always be demand for them, but it'll probably be a niche market with abit of revivals now and then. For those who are into the lossless music format, warm analogue sound etc.
Guest maxiplay Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 Anyone still remember Song Ching cassette shop at old Marina Square 2nd floor? Used to buy rare title from there but the price for cassette tape n CD's were quite ex at that time
Guest Guest Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Anyone still remember Song Ching cassette shop at old Marina Square 2nd floor? Used to buy rare title from there but the price for cassette tape n CD's were quite ex at that timeThere used to be a Song Ching at AMK central too, but closed long long ago, missed the good old days where people bought vinyl, CDs and cassettes and no rampant downloading of illegal music
gstc82 Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 I do miss the days when I can go to center music point at wisma or that cd shop n discover new bands n music I discovered Oasis, Jewel, Dust Brothers( now chemical bros), neneh cherry, puddle of mud, pearl jam, teenage fanclub n many many more thru these shops, it's very exciting to discover these musicians before they became famous.Apple killed music. When CDs , vinyl n tapes were the norm. The concept of an " Album" was paramount. Now it's a singles market. The thrill of going out to buy a cd, the booklet, the thrill of listening to the entire album is now gone.
中年馬 Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 (edited) 除了CD-Rama现在都在这里买http://www.yesasia.com/global/zh_TW/music-concerts-videos.html。 Edited August 11, 2013 by 中年馬

I go to Adelphi very often where there are cd and vinyl shops. The cd are mostly audiophile cds so the price is on the high side but quality of sound is much better. I particularly enjoy listening to vinyls of the 50s to 80s. I'll never listen to download mp3 music.
rotikawin Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 I used to when I was in my late teens, frequent tower records, hmv and borders where I can spend the whole afternoon there sampling the cds with my fren. But then he's my secret crush so main purpose really was to spend time with him...hehe
nissan123 Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Try going to "That CD Shop". Still has a reasonably well stocked variety. But It might be cheaper to find CDs online

Guest Guest Posted August 17, 2013 Posted August 17, 2013 Wa............. 對喔!!!忘記當時還有Tower Records在 Scott Road..... first CDs supermarket in Singapore, then follow by HMV, borders range actually lesser then both but they have alternative genre haha... used to work at Tower Records @ Pacific Plaza. So long ago, almost 20 years back... Gone were the days of browsing through the many items in Da-Da (Funan), Valentine Music (in Parklane), FuLeong (Chinatown), Sembawang (Raffles City - double duty with cruising), Supreme @ the old Plaza Singapura. Nostalgic, leh? Used to buy from Dada a lot, although the uncle and aunty owners were so bloody grumpy all the time. The 1st vinyl album I bought was Pet Shop Boys "Please" from Supreme... so nostalgic indeed. I miss that era so much.
darkflame Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 I was upset when Sembawang & Music Junction closed down. I don't really go to HMV much so I order my stuff online these days. I'm always running after you. You are my ideal. You are me.
steppenwolf Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Try going to "That CD Shop". alien Posted August 18, 2013 Posted August 18, 2013 Even cd rama u dun really see many pple there browsing CDs. Wondering how long can they survive?! 对自己好是一种幸福, 对别人好是一种积福。 Spend time counting your blessings, not airing your complaints.
azimuth Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Even HMV is pretty quiet these days. I wonder how long can they survive.
alien Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Even HMV is pretty quiet these days. I wonder how long can they survive.HMV was my fav hangout place to look see CDs, but now I also seldom go liao. 对自己好是一种幸福, 对别人好是一种积福。 Spend time counting your blessings, not airing your complaints.
Guest maxiplay Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 HMV was my fav hangout place to look see CDs, but now I also seldom go liao.same here....
onlylonely Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 CDs will still hv its demand as some prefer owning physical copies of albums. My bet is cd rama is here to stay.
onlylonely Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Hmv might exit sg mkt if the profits are eroding
alien Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 I think HMV will pull out from sg market sooner or later. Cos nowadays really cannot see CDs shops crowded with pple. Always empty n quiet no matter which cd shop. 对自己好是一种幸福, 对别人好是一种积福。 Spend time counting your blessings, not airing your complaints.

Always empty n quiet no matter which cd shop. I agree. I am quite surprised they didn't bother to revitalize their business to stay relevant. Eventually they might just have to bite the dust.
nissan123 Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I agree. I am quite surprised they didn't bother to revitalize their business to stay relevant. Eventually they might just have to bite the dust. Take a look at what they have to offer this days... A brick and motar store cant win in terms of variety but other things like customer service aren't even improved on... so ya.
bigdanbeam Posted September 29, 2013 Posted September 29, 2013 HMV is shutting down its somerset outlet. I think marina will follow suit. Just a matter of time http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/singapore/story/hmv-close-outlet-somerset-shift-business-marina-square-store-20130929
dragonboater Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 I'm more surprised that there are still CD shops around, who still buys Cd when YouTube has free music anytime anywhere?
