Many are shocked to read about the ghastly killing of innocent passer-by at one of Tokyo's busiest tourist area- Akihabara.

Staying 10mins away from akihabara... this news was rather frightening. Actually, we intended to go akihabara to buy some stuffs that day but were lucky coz we changed our mind and headed to Ueno instead.

The 25-yr-old, Japanese who have lost hope in life.

He thinks he could never be attached and he feels that he is ugly. He has lost all hope. Before crashing into the Electronics streets in a truck he rented, he had posted on the internet, his thoughts and intentions, in hope that someone would reply and stop him.. but no one did.

Flight delayed more than 3 hours? Get a S$84 voucher

Catch: It applies only to delays caused by AirAsia

KUALA LUMPUR - AIRASIA will compensate passengers whose flights are delayed for more than three hours.

The budget carrier announced on Monday that it would give RM200 (S$84) e-gift vouchers to passengers delayed from the scheduled time of flight departure.

Billed as its 'On Time Guarantee', the e-gift voucher can be used to purchase one's next AirAsia flight or any AirAsia products and services online and is valid for three months.

All flights beginning on Monday have been accorded the service, which comes at no extra cost to passengers.

It is, however, only applicable to delays caused by AirAsia, and does not cover circumstances such as bad weather, air traffic control, airport closures and acts of God.

Passengers eligible for the compensation will receive the voucher within three working days of the delayed flight via e-mail. A call centre will be set up soon for those without e-mail accounts.

Describing it as the first initiative to a string of '5-star' services that will be revealed in weeks to come, the budget carrier's chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes touted the move as possibly a world first.

He said the three-hour period was just the start, adding that once an order of a dozen Airbus 320 materialise within this year there would be room for other improvements. -- THE STAR/ANN

SIA inflight supervisor fined for theft

By Elena Chong, Courts Correspondent

AN INFLIGHT supervisor was fined $2,000 on Monday for stealing liquor and other items from a London-bound Singapore Airlines flight.

Ong, 50, admitted to stealing two bottles of Dom Perignon champagne, a bottle of Hennesy XO liquor, a bottle of red wine, caviar and other miscellaneous items worth a total of $1,116 on board the SQ308 flight on Feb 25.

He was found out by the London Customs officers who had checked on arriving cabin crew that evening.

He told them that the liquor was meant for a friend while the others were for his own consumption.

The London Police issued him a cautionary letter and released him. It informed the Singapore Airlines management about the case.

Ong, who then returned to Singapore the same day, was convicted under the Tokyo Convention.

Ong, whose contract has since been terminated, could have been jailed for up to three years and/or fined.

According to ST today, our Budget Terminal is getting a makeover with new improvements costing $10 million dollars. Work will begin in Sept.

'After the expansion, the terminal will have

- Increased handling capability- from 2.7 million passengers a year to 7 million

- 10 departure gates, up from 7

- 25 check-in counters, up from 18

- Two new cafes and two new retail kiosks, to add to the current 13 shops, one food court and one restaurant

- An extended canopy for kerbside arrival and departures, as well as for the taxi stand

- Improvements made in the last 2+ years

- Provision of baggage trolleys

- A children's play area

- A newstand

- Chairs along the arrival corridor

-Complimentary use of wheelchairs and stroller within the terminal' - ST

Well, the improvement list looks well and good BUT it will not entice me to fly Tiger Airway or made me want to visit the Budget Terminal at all. Something is surely not right with the Budget Terminal when after more than two years of operations, only Tiger and Cebu Airways are making use of the Terminal. Go figure.

On ST's front page, a little news and also a reminder to those travelling to China about the visa application. It seems many are unaware of this new requirement.

'Hundreds of people hoping to travel to China were stuck in long queues outside the Chinese Embassy at Tanglin Road yesterday, waiting to submit applications for now-needed visas. Since July 1, China has required Singaporeans to have valid visas, a requirement that is expected to be lifted after the Aug 8- 24 Olympic Games, which Beijing is hosting. But travellers appear to have been caught unawares, and had to skip work or school to join the queue. Travellers need to apply for visas at least four days before they fly. Applications can be processed faster at a higher price.' - ST

On a lighter but smellier note, Taiwanese are reminded to change the habit of throwing soiled toilet papers in the trash instead of toilet.

Concerns were raised several months ago about the safety of passenger jet that made an emergency landing on Friday after a hole appeared in its fuselage.

Entries in an online engineers' forum in February referred to the detection of corrosion during a maintenance check on the plane, a Qantas Boeing 747.

Qantas said the plane had undergone checks but no faults were detected.

More than 360 people were on board the flight en route to Melbourne when it was forced to land in the Philippines.

The passengers described hearing a loud bang mid-flight, when the fuselage separated from the plane and caused a rapid decompression of the cabin.

They have since arrived back in Australia, while engineers have begun inspecting the damage in Manila.

'Fingers crossed'

Safety concerns were raised about the 17-year-old Boeing 747-438 Longreach in posts on an online engineers' forum in February, which referred to the detection of "serious corrosion issues" during a maintenance check at Avalon airport in March.

"Sources tell me the launch date has further slipped once to 5th of March... Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope OJK [the plane involved in mid-air drama] recovers from her plastic surgery," one participant wrote.

Aviation experts say corrosion could have been enough to have caused the 2.5-3m hole in the fuselage - if even a small section of the plane's aluminium skin was able to break free, the enormous pressures generated at cruising altitude could have done the rest.

Other possible causes might include accidental external damage to the plane on the ground, or something inside the plane which had not been properly secured and slammed into the fuselage at some point. Investigators will want to rule out the presence of any explosives.

A Qantas spokeswoman has confirmed that the plane did go through maintenance checks at the facility mentioned on the forum, but that "nothing out of the ordinary was detected during the checks".

"The most recent maintenance check on this aircraft were for a 'D' [most thorough] check in Qantas's Sydney facility in 2004 and two 'C' [regular] checks in Qantas's facility in 2006 and 2008," she said.

Investigators, including four officers from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, would also closely examine the maintenance regime of the aircraft, which was registered in 1991, Qantas said.

They would also focus on what happened at Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok airport before the flight departed, it added.

A similar Qantas 747-438 Longreach flew Benedict XVI to Rome last week following his historic visit to Australia.

'Lot of emotion'

Passengers described hearing a large bang and feeling a rush of wind and debris through the cabin about an hour after Flight QF30 left Hong Kong at 0900 local time (0100 GMT) on Friday.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said the aircraft made an emergency descent from 29,000ft to 10,000ft before stabilising. It said initial information indicated that a section of the fuselage had separated in the area of the forward cargo compartment.

Passenger Olivia Lucas told the BBC everyone was "pretty scared for a few moments".

"Then everyone focused on getting their oxygen masks on," she said.

Phill Restall, from the UK, said the pilot then told passengers that they were going to land in Manila to have a look at the damage.

"Everyone was fairly calm, partly because they didn't realise the extent of it," he said.

"After we disembarked it started to dawn on people that this was a major incident. There were 350 people up there who were very lucky.

"Seeing the hole caused a lot of emotion. People were physically shaking. Many realised how close they were to their own mortality."

Dr David Newman, of Flight Medicine Systems, said forcing the plane into a rapid descent after a sudden loss of pressure was a standard emergency procedure.

A JETSTAR plane partially slid off a runway in Cambodia as it came in to land in wet weather, slashing a tyre.

The Jetstar Asia flight from Singapore to Siem Reap-Angkor international airport, carrying 144 passengers, landed in the rain yesterday morning, with reports the plane’s fuselage also scraped along the ground during landing.

A Jetstar spokeswoman said an investigation was being carried out into the incident, which came a day after a Spanish airliner crashed in flames after losing an engine at Madrid.

“It was a flight from Singapore to Siem Reap… it was a very rainy day,” the spokeswoman said.

“When (staff) did a go-around of the aircraft after landing, they discovered that one of the left hand tyres wasn’t fully deflated but it obviously had some cuts on it, and there was mud on the aircraft.

“There was not permanent damage to the aircraft and no injury to passengers."

“Because there was only damage to the left-hand wheels, it would be incorrect to say that the aircraft totally left the runway… there was nothing wrong with the right-hand wheels.

All passengers “disembarked as normal”, she said.

The A320 would fly back to Singapore later today.

A NEWS.com.au reader said the plane “left the runway and blew a tyre and scraped the ground”.

Another reader, who was booked on the plane’s flight back to Singapore yesterday, said the airline put him up at a motel while another flight was organised.

“We’ve been told that technical difficulties in Siem Reap have caused the cancellation for a full 24 hours,” he said last night.

An airline spokeswoman said all passengers were later put on another flight.

TOKYO, Aug. 22 (AP) - (Kyodo)

Two women were slashed by another woman near Tokyo's Shibuya Station on Friday evening, police said.

The two victims, aged 26 and 27, were injured but are not in life- threatening condition. The police said they arrested Hatsuko Kitagawa, 79, on suspicion of attempted murder.

Kitagawa was quoted as telling investigators, "As I don't have money, I thought the police would take care of me if I caused an incident."

Just saw the news at 6.30pm that another travel agency in Chinatown has cheated a few customers and has since closed down their office. The agency has collected the money and issue 'itineraries' to their customers. Some realised too late when they went the office to collect the tickets that their booking wasnt even processed in the first place. It's a sense of deja vu for me- being cheated many years ago by an agency also in chinatown. No point going to the police station. After giving all the evidence and going there to give statements, months later they called me late at night to inform me that they had no case against the agency.

Wonder if anything can be done about this. Of course, now, with the internet- these travel agents have become sort of redundant for me but there are still people who have to rely on these people for their travel needs.
