Hi, for 5 days already i always wake up around 3am and cant slerp again. My room feels stuffy and there is rotten smell. I always clean my room and there is no rat for sure. My unit is at the 4th floor, last unit at the far left. I'm wondering if I'm being haunted

This sounds distressing, and it’s understandable why your mind might go to something supernatural—especially with the rotten smell and waking at the same time each night.

However, let’s first rule out physical/environmental causes before concluding it’s paranormal, because several non-haunting explanations fit your description perfectly:

1. Wake-up at 3 am – This is actually a common time for blood sugar dips, histamine spikes (from allergies or mold), or a shift from deep to light sleep. Cortisol naturally rises around this time. If you have sleep apnea, acid reflux, or carbon monoxide exposure, 3 am awakenings are very typical.

2. Rotten smell – This is the biggest clue. The fact that you smell it even though you clean suggests:

   · Dead animal in a wall or ceiling (mouse, bird, squirrel – can take 2–3 weeks to fully decompose).

   · Mold or mildew inside ducts, under floorboards, or behind walls – mold often gives a musty/rotten odor and can cause the exact sleep pattern you describe (3 am wake-up with stuffiness).

   · Sewer gas leak from a dried-out P-trap in a rarely used drain (shower, sink, floor drain).

   · Gas leak (natural gas is usually skunk/rotten egg smell) – this is a safety risk.

3. Stuffy room – Suggests poor ventilation, high CO₂, or airborne contaminants. At the far end of a 4th-floor corridor, airflow may be minimal.

4. Last unit, far left – Could mean your unit is at a building’s exterior corner where moisture collects, or adjacent to a vertical pipe stack (sewer or vent pipe) that could be cracked.

What to do immediately (next 24 hours):

· Check for dead animal – ask building management to inspect crawl spaces, vents, and above ceiling tiles.

· Test for carbon monoxide – CO detectors are cheap. Low-level CO causes waking at night, headache, stuffiness, and odd smells.

· Check under sinks and behind appliances for mold or leaking pipes.

· Open windows before bed – if smell and stuffiness disappear, it’s environmental, not paranormal.

Why it’s unlikely to be a haunting:

· True hauntings rarely begin suddenly with a smell and stuffiness; they usually involve recurring visual/audible events or cold spots that move.

· A rotten smell in a closed room with poor ventilation is almost always physical decay or gas, not a ghost.

When to consider spiritual/psychological possibilities:

Only after an HVAC tech, plumber, and building inspector find nothing. Sleep-related hallucinations can also produce strong odors (called “olfactory hallucinations”), sometimes from stress or temporal lobe activity during sleep transition.

You’re not crazy for wondering about haunting, but the evidence points to a fixable problem in your walls, pipes, or ventilation. If you check all the above and still find nothing, feel free to write back with more details.
