didnt realise until someone mentioned to me that Cali had sold off their Malaysia gym to another fitness group.

Went to their web site and found out that now only China, HK, Taiwan and Singapore left. They used to have Korea, Thailand and Malaysia.

What a shame, it was an incentive for me to hold Cali gym as when overseas, can used their gym as well.

I remembered using the Bangkok gym to freshen up before catching the evening flight back as I had to check out of hotel during noon. Likewise I left my bags in KL's cali while waiting for the late afternoon flight. I had also enjoyed the hot pool in Seoul cali.

well the so called good news is that there is rumor that they may set up a new branch in Singapore...

Yeah OB, looks like now you will have to leave your bags or shower or gym or hotpool in a sauna when in BKK, ICN or KUL. :)

You mean Cali here opening up new branches in Singapore? When I signed up with Cali last Dec, they told me that they might be opening two new branches at Tampines and Boon Lay area. Not sure if thats going to happend with the economic downturn???

Tampines was always in the talk even before they open Bugis.

then the gym even told us to sign up faster as they mentioned bugis may have swimming pool so will increase price. In the end, still the same type of gym ah, just added a JC name infront.

Solar and organically (food, food, food) powered. Lurve will do me too :)

Dont wear undies and socks and dont carry hankies. Buy condoms and lube locally. That should cut down a bit on luggage.

Oooo.. did not know that you were a fan of kimchi and giam chai.

Well that's what i heard abt Cali last yr. But then when Tampines 1 opens, it's not Cali gym but Amore Living Gym. Anyone here who is a member? It has a pool but it's abt 20m only. It has a steam room in the changing area too.

I feel that cali might have shot themselves in the foot with their "great" package deals. Some members pay as low as $8 per annum. How can survive? It is no wonder that they cannot upkeep their equipment and the ambience of their gyms. Orchard is THE cali gym, yet the state of the place is BAD.

I have moved to FF and only visit Cali when I am overseas in Taipei & HK. I noticed that a number of cali members have switched to FF recently.

What is the general profile of the people who used FF?

In FF, would say it is a mixed lot of people - like in most gyms - i have seen serious body builders, students, executives... young, old... celebrities... mixed. Certainly, the amount that you pay for sub also determines the type of clientele too. FF is known to be quite exp.

So FF has a more sophisicated clientele as compared to Cali whose clientele comprises people from all walks of life? Are there less gays in FF?

yes, totally agree, alot gay in FF too, the different betweent with cali, just those gay mostly are loud or not. one thing gd about cali is they have many classes for members compare the rest, even you don't do free weight or machines, just attend their classes is worth enough

Guest try-out

Hi all,

Would like to try out at Cali using their free trial passes.

But am not too sure what to expect, hope to get some feedback here... ;)

(1) How many towels are provided? Given at counter right?

(2) The locker is the key-lock or number lock type? Which is again - get from the counter?

(3) The shower cubicle is curtain style or glass door type? with hot shower?

(4) Any branch has jacuzzi, or non of the branches have jacuzzi?

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi all,

(1) How many towels are provided? Given at counter right?

You are given 2. 1 Big one for bathing and 1 small one for gym. You will exchange it from the counter with your membership card to get a towel card. When you return the towels you exchange the towel card for your membership card

(2) The locker is the key-lock or number lock type? Which is again - get from the counter?

You need to buy your own KEY lock as they provide you just normal lockers but no lock. You can also use the coin lockers if you don't want to buy a lock just for the gym. But the gym I go is bugis so I am not sure if other gyms have exactly the same lockers.

(3) The shower cubicle is curtain style or glass door type? with hot shower?

Bugis one is curtain type with hot shower and normal soap + shampoo dispensers.

(4) Any branch has jacuzzi, or non of the branches have jacuzzi?

Bugis one has a dry sauna and steam room.

Hope this helps!

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi chapapa, appreciate your prompt reply. Do you happen to know how much is the cost of using the coin lockers?

Anyway, drop by Novena branch today intending to use DBS CCard promotion of 2 weeks free passes. Of course, those whom had "walked down" this path would know it is not easy to get to "use" the free passes. Haha...

Planned to try out about an hour, wash up before meeting friend. But was there with the sales talks (membership & PT) till no time to try out.

I did expect the talk on membership (which was rather interesting to see how they "downgrade" their own prices), but not the PT talk... :(

Cutting the story short, initially membership cost Enrolment Fee (EF in short, can't remember how much but about 200/300 plus - one off) PLUS Processing Fee (PF in short, 99 - one off) PLUS 105 monthly (excluding GST) for 12 months for 1 club access.

She talk-talk-talk down to 1906.74 for 3 yrs (no EF, no PF but include GST), all clubs - however it is 1 time payment only by DBS CC. Approximately 53/month for 3 yrs. So I signed up immediately. I didn't even negotiate at all, she just talked her way "down" the price on her own. :P

Quite ok right, the price??

As for that persistent PT talk, I use delay tactics for now, guess he would "pester" me when I go again. Then I better go other clubs to "avoid" him, haha...

Just to share-share my experience today. :)

Oh, forgotten to add that, the lady did mention to me that there are 2 new branches opening next yr, 1 in the east, 1 in the west.

I tried to ask where exactly is in the east, she just hint-hint that it is very likely above MRT...

For the east ah, after Lavender, all stations are above the ground, so I suppose she meant those malls (higher level) beside MRT.

My guess is the new Bedok Point which is under construction near Bedok MRT, of course I could be wrong.

Coz Tampines/Simei/Pasir Ris, seems not so likely as they are almost all occupied...

FYI.

personally i wont pay more than $40 per month for cali. not worth it.

Way 2 crowded 2 crowded, very very very bad after sales service. they keep changing their terms.. less worldwide access, less towels, wats next? seems like they have been saying there will be "new branches next year" for ages...

I prefer to use SAFRA now since it's just 15 mins walk from my house and i can squeeze a cardio session or a workout within an hour.

The equipment may not be as complete as those in Cali but

1. I save up on transport cost.

2. I save up on time travelling.

3. I can diet better and have more time to cook my food.

Admittably, there aren't as many cute muscular guys I can fantasize as compared to those in Cali. But I can survive on those few good ones.

Any trainers who will make you weak in their knees? From any gym is fine.

Of course, if possible, try not to be too descriptive in your replies like "I got so hot and flustered that I went into the toilet jerking off to his 8 packs....."

2. Eugene from Cali Novena

3. Elvin from Cali Orchard

4. New filipino trainer from Cali orchard

I voted for a new Pinoy PT, called Mark in Cali Orchard, he is cute but very short and small  , havent seen him for 2 weeks :(

Before there is Mattiew (dont know if his name is written properly), nice body and goodlooking + good PT, very caring and professional. He is straight but gay-friendly :thumb:

The rest can be forgotten

Just a few comments for the above postings

- $1906 for 3 years is quite standard, seemed that they have been sticking to this price for a while, if you are not in a hurry to join, can wait for every quarter end, that's when the pressure mounts on the sales person to perform, and you maybe (I stress MAYBE) able to bargain a better price or other perks eg shoe locker

- All cali has a steam and dry sauna, no jacuzzi though (only the Taiwan and the old seoul ones have jacuzzi) while the KL branch has swimming pool. BUT KL and seoul are no longer Cali branches...:(

- Take the news on "new club next year" with a pinch of salt. Bugis and Novena took a few "next year" before materialize. I have got that sales pitch many times. Just sign based on existing clubs, not the potential future ones. Should the person tell you that, simply reply that you will sign when the new club is up. Or at least make him/ her write in black and white on the contract, sure won't write one.

- Joining a gym is like going to sauna, different people reacts to different sauna. you can only know after you try them. So insist on a 2 week trial pass. Go to the gym on those time that you will go to gym eg after work in weekday etc. Try out the facilities, the classes. soak into the environment. See whether you like the crowds.

- Take into consideration the travel time and ease, some mentioned he chose SAFRA due to proximity, which is a wise choice, as if you stay and work in Jurong, it will take a strong determination to travel to town to use the Cali gyms.

- Lastly, keep in mind that joining a gym is a commitment to keep fit and stay healthy, it is not a social pass to show to others and neither solely used as cheaper entry to sauna :P

I am surprised no one suggested Chris from Orchard Fitness First. Remember the naked model on the bus stop for Virgin Mobile?

I think he is like the hotness and most popular instructor in Singapore.
