SPORTS FOR THE MIDDLE AGED UP

snsunny

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just hoping that some kind soul can organize weekly sport activities like Badminton, Running and swimming etc for ppl like us who are in our middle age.

Please restrict if as much as possible to ppl from mid 40s and up only as if you notice with the responses we get from other TS are mainly for the younger group.

If for swimming, good to have members who are staying in condo, and who would not mind inviting members for some serious swimming weekly.. THX

Understand your point.. but seriously sometimes you have to give ppl benefit of doubts and stand at their angle to look at things.. dont be judgemental too fast.

I am just giving examples of sporting to stay healthy together as ppl factor can be motivating elements to keep us going for long term benefits as well.

Games like Badminton, will definitely need more than solo to play..

I am proposing this not by any means with hanky panky intention.

Ever since I got the Apple Watch when it came out, I feel I have been better at being active since I feel compelled and motivated to complete the rings every day. I set a 1200 Calories target daily and on days I don't complete them, I feel a tinge guilty. I find having a tracker makes me more accountable for my activities.

Love.

There is serious swimming in condo pools:o

Johor Jaya Swimming and Badminton Complex, next to the Bowling Alley, offers hot showers and after 17:30, sauna.

For  swimming, RM12 with locker.

RM19 taxi or 2.2 bus fare from 1 two 1 joint in the hub which is surrounded by various accommodation options .

The oldest is 50 plus but our group no age restriction. All will wait at the finishing point for the rest be it run fast or slow. Some times some super runner will join in and run double our distance. Our group is to keep fit and socialize with all aj members

No specific sports for any age group.

The purpose of sports/exercise is to keep one healthy and fit.

You can choose to have a PB for whatever sports you are doing. Go on, push yourself a little harder, just don't over exert.

End of the day, you must enjoy the sport you are doing. :)

3 days of a 3 hour brisk walk and I'm back playing FIFA the rest of the year LOL

i see a lot of gay men are too gungho and overdo it,

they injure themselves, have to go out of action for recovery.

2 out of 5 will continue and risk re-injury.

3 out of 5 will just give up and say they are too old to keep fit.

for active and least destructive aging,

i would advise against running (treadmill or uneven paths)

or other high impact sports (explosive tennis / rugby etc)

the repetitive impact of running actually causes sagging on the face
as skin laxity lessens as you age, it cannot bounce back.

running puts it under unnecessary impact stresses,

gradually leading to premature / extreme sagging.

other aspects of running that is negative:
- impact on joints, (hips and knees)

- improper running form leading to nerve injury

- if you are doing trail running, risk of injury increases

if you are running outdoors, chances are that

your sunscreen will also be gone after a few wipes
(always dab your sweat, men tend to wipe)

when your skin is exposed to UVA and UVB

it leads to skin thinning and wrinkles.

from my experience, elliptical is the best for cardio.

rowing machine if you would like to improve overall strength.

(upper body and leg strength)
and swimming for combination of strength and cardio.
all these activities can be done indoors, or at night.

all you need to do is incorporate duration activities,

keep mindful of heartrate, to train your heart to be strong
and light weight training is also good for conditioning,

strengthening the bones and joints.

sports and activities must be considered carefully,

especially for those middle age and above.
my partner is 4 years shy of 50, so i do have to keep him in check.

there is no point being over enthu and injuring yourself.
the whole point is to have prolonged longevity and maintained health.

sometimes the gay gusto and male ego tends to override.
we must keep it in check, remain humble and keep our eyes on the prize.

ALSO:
when you are older, you can heal your injury,
but it will never heal to quite the same as before.
amirite, gentlemen?

Lol. Pls stop teasing yoyo. He has members' interests at heart.

Much as group exercise is good, we have to bear in mind the geographical location. Imagine travelling time is greater than the exercise time. This would defeat the purpose and is unproductive.

Hey guys

I have just recently set up a mini gym at home and am seriously looking for buds to work out togather. Wanna document our progress etc and see what kind of result we can achieve.

Im at CCK / Limbang and can host weekday evenings, some weekends and some full day weekdays.

Hit me up if you are keen and best if you can tell me you aims and goals and we can see how we we can do this togather.

Currently i have weights (dumbells etc) , bench, abs & core machine, resistamce band and step machine for cardio.

Fyi about 4 months ago i  "cracked" my right shoulder and "twisted" my left leg. Docs told me to stop everythng for 3 months so its time for me to start all over again.

Add me on Line : Aljay75 if you are serious.

Cheers

Hmm this is the first time i heard of such things. If you say running puts face to unnecessary stress, I would think gymming give even more stress to face. Take a look at how gymmers twisted face when they use full power to life weights lol

the logic doesn't quite apply because they are 2 different types of stresses.

with gym, you are creating your own resistance
at best, this strengthens the muscles on the face,

as you are tightening or resisting parts of the face

which normally you would not.

at worst, this creates wrinkles, especially ard the eyes.
it also depends what pronation / position you are in.

the other stress is gravity, plain and simple.

however the bad thing about running is the impact stresses.

with each step, the impact stress can be 2-3 times the force of gravity,

depending on step and weight.

this is why your knees, hips, spine suffer as they try to absorb the impact.

especially in the middle aged and seniors.

further injury is also common when the runner is fatigued

he/she is less mindful of their step, and just want to finish the run.

but actually excessive cardio in general creates hollowness and sagging.

it is a well known thing in cosmetic and aesthetic circles,

because as we age, fat loss happens more in the face.

so if you are losing fat in your face area naturally and with weight loss

and having 3x gravity pulling your face down with every step,

well,  you do the math.

this is a supportive article, and while it is called Gym Face,

i would rather call it Cardio Face, as the article is targetted

at ladies whose gym routine is mostly treadmill.

The article is talking about gym face so weight lifting is also included lol. I was thinking when a person do full power heavy lifting their forehead, their face skin will be squeeze tight resulting in lines on the forehead skin and the expanding and contracting of the skin may make the face skin looks saggy. I have a friend that is in his late 20s who almost never run in his life due to asthma but his face muscle and skin already saggy and looks older than his real age while I have a few friends in their 40s who run regularly dont have such saggy facial feature. I wont believe articles like this until at least more than half of the certified medical and scientist professional agrees to it.

people do more than lift weights in the gym,
as i mentioned, the article is female centric,

and majority of female gym goers do cardio

and very minimal weight training, if any at all.

‘When body fat is very low through hard exercise, there’s an unfortunate trade-off and it’s that the face will invariably suffer,’

This is specifically talking about cardio, because you primarily build muscle with weights. you lower body fat with cardio or HIIT.

‘The constant rising and pounding down lifts and pulls the facial skin away from the underlying muscles and bones,’ Dr Imber says. ‘You surely have seen this in slow-motion films of runners. The skin rises and falls, and as the foot impacts, it continues to fall for another fraction of a second, then bounces up again. The elastic fibres in the skin absorb the repeated trauma until they eventually cease to fully bounce back and ultimately stretch a bit, causing laxity of the skin.’

This explains the bio-mechanics of what happens. I don't think you need a study or report to highlight the obvious.
I see this in slow motion every time I trek or see people on the treadmill/trail-running.

honestly, there are studies and reports,

and then there is empirical evidence

with medical knowledge to back it up.

if you wait for everything to be researched

and reported, you might be doing harm

for years before you get concrete evidence.

because that's how long studies take.

and even then decades-long studies

can still be inconclusive or wrong.

so don't put too much faith in them.

your friends might not be the best sample group,

because they are at different fitness levels,

prescribing to different diets. so best not to

comment or compare.

but actually, you can believe what you want.

I am just sharing what I see and know from

my aesthetician and physiotherapist,

as well as, a few doctor friends.

at least, i hope you are not stupid enough to

skip sunscreen. that one if you need scientific

report to tell you, then i guess it is a case of

being willfully dumb or stubbornly ignorant.

take extra special care as our age increases,

it is hubris to think that we are untouchable,

just because we practice a few good habits.

cheers!

Since you already pointed out my friends is not the best sample group due to different fitness levels, different diets and best not to compare. This also means that it is true that face saggy is not totally true due to jogging as the fitness, health, diet, genes and good habits might be a greater factor in face sagging. So commenting and comparing just jogging alone affecting face sagging is also gone to the wrong path unless you can get enough evidence to prove it. Taking the highlighted sentence i can also rephrased it for gym weight heavy lifting.

‘The constant squeezing and bounce back of facial muscle from heavy weighting lifting lifts and pulls the facial skin away from the underlying muscles and bones,’ Dr Imber says. ‘You surely have seen this in slow-motion films of weight lifters. The skin squeezes and bounces, and as the heavy weight being brought up. It continues to apply immerse pressure on the face muscles and skin with repeated heavy lifting. The elastic fibres in the skin absorb the repeated trauma until they eventually cease to fully bounce back and ultimately stretch a bit, causing laxity of the skin.’

It’s not to say running is an absolute no for

middle age men. Every individual is different. You just have to know your own body (which many people is clueless or refuse to accept ageing is real) and listen to your body (again, ego and pride can be too huge to swallow).

There are many healthy uncles and aunties running beyond 40yo and they are coping well.

So, don’t take just read an article and take that as your life Bible. Your body, your health, you own it!

Before I turned 35 yr old, I told myself that I must complete all running & cycle races with reasonable timing as a challenge and there are many people who said I am crazy to start running at late age and its bad for knees, etc. By the time I reached 35, I completed all kind of marathons and even the longest cycle race at Bintan with super bad weather. I have no regrets when I looked back. Do not wait for someone to start some sports, start first and along the way you will pick up some good friends. Always do warm-up before and after sports, listen to your body and rest when needed.
