Ellie Goulding

Sadly, I don't think this one will be her second US hit. But it's still a decent track that balances mainstream appeal with alternative sensibility.

I really dig Azealia Banks and her modern-rap-meets-1990s-house-music sound.

Still can't beat 212 though.

1991 holds up nicely on its own - the video reminds me of a modern day version of Madonna's Vogue... no?

sounds like she's gone a bit Florence & The Machine here. but nonetheless a lush track.

I think 1991 is still good on its own.

Don't think it matches the brilliance that Vogue is, though. Haha.

On returning to Singapore, I discovered the Japanese version of Chairlift's I belong in in your arms which is one hella uplifting love song.

But it's funny how just before I left, I had Billie Ray Martin's Your loving arms on repeat. The total antithesis of Chairlift.

OMG, I LOVE INDIE!!!

Ok, one of my favorite indie artist Jay Brannan. He is a gay artist who did many songs that I feel very relateable as a gay man.

Check out his other songs.

OMG, I really haven't listened to alternative music in quite some time (not to mention haven't posted since forever). So many unfamiliar new names haha.

On another subject of 'mainstream alternative', here's Fifth Harmony from X Factor covering Ellie Goulding. The performance starts at 2:21

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfAwh8x-w4w

X Factor has been a bore through its first two seasons, but finally there's one live performance that I find myself repeating over and over again.

It's a magical rendition, each of the five girls can sing and put up good vocal works, and I just like how apt the song choice is... given that they were an underdog and a clear elimination among the remaining contestants, then this performance happened and they proved that, truly, anything could happen.

This performance just redeemed X Factor in my eyes.
