Being central, you can go to any inner suburb quite easily and get back just as easily. You can get around on any tram in the Central business district for free. You certainly won't feel as if you are too far away from anything. If you decide to buy some souvenirs, the Vic Market is the best place to buy.....much cheaper than anywhere in Sydney. With it being summer, you might want to look at staying in St Kilda which is an inner city suburb.... by the beach.(still very close to everywhere). You'll have a ball! Yes, you could do that providing you are not a light sleeper. I think WOW would be far better, as Subway is located under a train overpass. The trains stop usually around 1am and restart at 6am. If you decide to give it a go, ask for a large locker. There are lots of backpacker type, accomodation in the CBD which is quite inexpensive.
