FAQS

Wait, I stil don't get it - wht is Proud Spaces?

Proud Spaces is a career fair meant to showcase companies ready for a more inclusive Singapore! Come join us and find out what companies are doing to signal that inclusivity is important to them.

So, is Proud Spaces part of Pink Dot?

Nope! Proud Spaces is an event independently organised by Chope to further discussions on inclusivity and diversity while celebrating Pink Dot's tenth edition.

Is entry free?

Yup, Proud Spaces is completely free!

Can foreigners visit?

Yes. Because this isn't a Pink Dot event, everyone, including foreigners are welcome.

But I'm straight. Will I still be welcome at the event?

Definitely.

I'm not currently looking for a job. Can I still attend?

Yes of course! Come find out about these companies regardless, and if you're already at a company open to being more inclusive, you could come away with ideas for new policies.

Should I come prepared with resumes? Is it possible I will get hired at Proud Spaces?

Most companies will be referring applicants to online hiring portals, but attendees are of course free to bring resumes. It's unlikely to get hired at Proud Spaces, but you might score an interview.

Should I dress up in business wear?

Only if you want to! Proud Spaces is meant to be a casual, carnival-like setting for you to get to know companies, and companies to get to know you. If you're most comfortable in business wear, then feel free. But if you're more the chic-cash sort, that'll work too.

Will there be media on the day itself?

There'll definitely be coverage, though we're currently unable to confirm if there'll be mainstream media present on the day.

What if I want to attend but don't want to be in any photos or videos?

We'll be providing stickers on the day for attendees to highlight that they don't want to be in pictures or videos.

Is Proud Spaces going to happen every year?

We're hoping it will, but that really depends on the response this year!

What should I do if I face discriminatory behaviour at the event?

We'll do our best to prevent that from happening, but if it does happen, please approach any Chope team member (we'll be wearing Chope t-shirts) on the day and let us know so we can act on it!

How do I RSVP?

There's no need to RSVP, though you will need to register at the door in order to enter the event space (event sponsor requirements). Feel free to bring your name card to speed up the process!

Do you have any social media hashtags?

Art Porters
64 Spottiswoode Park Road, Singapore 088652

Calling all art enthusiasts:
Come down to Art Porters, a contemporary art gallery near Tanjong Pagar, for this series of talks on queer art. Drawing on a selection of works by international artists, across a range of media, the talks will showcase three different — but interconnected — perspectives from the art industry: that of the curator/historian, the artist and the collector. How does each relate to the practice, production and business of LGBTQ
art? Expect an illuminating, comprehensive discussion.

Venue: Art Porters Gallery, 64 Spottiswoode Park Road, Singapore 088652
Time: 3 pm to 5.30 pm
----------------------------------------------------------------
A donation to benefit Action for AIDS will be requested at the door. Limited capacity — prior registration on the event facebook page required for entry.

R18 (Portrayal of male genitalia and frontal female nudity).

We are happy to announce Ms Deepika Shetty as the moderator for Queer Art From Different Perspectives. Deepika has made a name for assimilating her varied life experiences into her writing across platforms.

She spent six years in television as producer and anchor of a weekly segment on books for Singapore-based television network Channel NewsAsia’s breakfast show, Prime Time Morning.

She then joined Singapore's leading daily The Straits Times, where she was the Arts Correspondent for nine years. During that time, she developed and shaped the newspaper's extensive coverage of the visual arts, museums, and introduced coverage for India's widely popular Hindi film industry better known as Bollywood.

In 2010, she was awarded the newspaper's first Passion Project Award. The award allowed her to travel for three months to document a story of reverse migration. At a time of heightened migration debate in Singapore, she documented stories of ordinary Singaporeans living and working in India.

Known for her relentless pursuit of exclusive news stories, Deepika had previously worked for The Times of India newspaper and India Today news magazine in India. On the literary front, she has moderated at key literary festivals in various cities in Australia as well as in Dubai, Galle, Ubud and Singapore.

Launched in 2013, her popular Facebook page, Sadee (Our) Saree, has galvanised a new generation’s interest in the saree. In 2014, she published her debut novel The Red Helmet – a story of love and loss set in 1980s India. The book was marketed largely through social media.

She has done media training sessions and currently works in Public Relations. She is a regular moderator and emcee at various diplomatic events held in Singapore.

------------------------------------------------------------
Here are some recent events she has moderated and emceed at:
- Finland's Final 100 year celebration. The event was held at Gardens by the Bay on Dec 6 and attended by over 600 guests.
- Emceed and moderated the European Union's Human Rights Day Conference 2017

How Peculiar Is Our Writing
Hosted by BooksActually

Friday, 6 July 2018, Friday
7.30 p.m. - 9.00 p.m.
BooksActually
9 Yong Siak Street, Singapore 168645

ABOUT THE EVENT:
What does it mean to have your voice and story heard within and outside of the LGBTQ+ community and why is it so important especially for people like us? This panel discusses the importance of queer literature and writing with authors Cyril Wong and Tania De Rozario as well as other storytellers such as spoken word poet Gabbi Wenyi Ayane and Sean Foo of Dear Straight People. The panel will be moderated by Ian Chung.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Cyril Wong
Cyril Wong has been called a confessional poet, according to The Oxford Companion to Modern Poetry, based on “the brutally candid sexuality in his poetry, along with a barely submerged anxiety over the fragility of human connection and a relentless self-querying”. He is the Singapore Literature Prize-winning author of poetry collections such as Unmarked Treasure, Tilting Our Plates to Catch the Light, The Dictator’s Eyebrow, After You and The Lover’s Inventory. He has also published Ten Things My Father Never Taught Me and Other Stories and a novel, The Last Lesson of Mrs de Souza. Cyril has served as a mentor under the Creative Arts Programme and the Mentor Access Project, as well as a judge for the Golden Point Awards in Singapore.

Tania De Rozario
Tania De Rozario is the author of Tender Delirium (Math Paper Press, 2013), which was shortlisted for the 2014 Singapore Literature Prize and was the winner of the 2011 NAC-SPH Golden Point Award for English Poetry. She is an Associate Artist with The Substation, Singapore's oldest independent arts centre, and runs EtiquetteSG, a multidisciplinary platform focused on developing and showcasing art, writing, film and music made by women. Her poetry and fiction have been published in various journals and anthologies, and she has written extensively about art.

Sean Foo
Sean Foo is the founder of Dear Straight People; Singapore's leading LGBTQ platform that boasts over 13,000 highly engaged Facebook followers. Known for his ability in crafting socially conscious stories with viral potential, Sean is best known for his Out Of The Closet series; a series of feature stories that aims to tell the stories of openly queer Asians in all of their complexity. To date, his work has been featured on other media platforms ranging from mainstream publications such as Mothership and The Asian Parent to international publications such as Gay Star News and Queerty.

Gabbi Wenyi Ayane
Gabbi Wenyi Ayane makes zines, poetry and art. She founded and is organising Queer Zinefest SG, Singapore's first platform dedicated to independent publishers within the LGBTQIA+ community. She also co-organises destination:INK. Gabbi participated in her first poetry slam in April 2018 (WordForward The Hookup Poetry Slam) and came in first place. She has created a zine of page poetry (Brain Vomit) and a zine of spoken word (Here Are Nine Poems I've Yelled Into A Microphone). She printed her first zine in 2017 (A Super-Quick, Kinda Polite Guide to Chinese Privilege in Singapore). Gabbi's non-fiction writing has been published in The Huffington Post, The Local Rebel and The Tab.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR:

Ian Chung
Ian Chung graduated from the Warwick Writing Programme. His work has appeared in Axon: Creative Explorations, Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, QLRS, The Cadaverine, and various Math Paper Press anthologies, among others. He edits Eunoia Review.
