robin Posted November 8, 2019 Posted November 8, 2019 (edited) My mom is 70+ years old. Knowing how my siblings will fight over inheritance matters, for many years, I have advice her to do a will & also have a nice picture of herself. But she finds such matters to be a taboo & procrastinate about it. But when my dad passed away, we realised the framed up picture which he has kept for many years in the wardrobe, it became so handy & convenient for us when we were preparing for his funeral. Deep in my heart, I think he has been very brave to go to the studio on his own (those days no smart phone) & I thank him for his kind consideration. After his funeral, my mom finally realised how important it is to do a will & has a picture of herself which she is happy with. She finally went to do that. Now, the only thing left for us is to enjoy our time with each other Edited November 8, 2019 by robin bluerunner, feedersmiracle, mate69 and 1 other 4 Quote

Her 90yo mom lived in an apartment with her brother (useless guy who is unemployed and spends all his time and money drinking and gambling outside). Although her mom has like 6 sons and daughters combined, none of them visited her regularly except my friend. I been to her mom's home once and it was awful. The stench wa bad, they used 90s newspaper to cover to window and most of the time the mom, who was fat, would be topless in summer for convenience sake. The toilet was disgusting. There were several times she would visit her and find her mom having fallen and laying on the bathroom floor, unable to come up on her own strength. Since the brother was usually out for days, the mother sometimes lie helplessly there for long periods of time. So she lamented her situation to me about how she wished her mom could have better care and life in the twilight of her years. I sat down and told her, "Look, your mom's property can sell for 6mil yuan. If you want the best for your mom, just sell it off, take the 6 mil and rent her a nice apartment. You can then hire two bigsized manly beijing guys (北京爷们) to take care of her around the clock for 3000 yuan each. They can wheel her to the supermarket and parks or wherever makes her happy. She's 90 and is at the tailend of her life and I doubt she can enjoy this luxury for a long period and drain off the 6 mil yuan if that's what you're worried of. If you want to give her an empress' ending off, this might be it". Then she said, "Of course we can't do that. According to Chinese culture, the house is to be left to the next generation, not for the consumption of the old. Imagine if she does that, the next generation would scold her for eternity" So I just clam up lar. I think to myself, why some people are so hypocritical. On one hand she said she wanna give the best for her mom, but when it involved selling the apartment, which was 100% owned by the mom, her thoughts were more of the wellbeing of the grandchildren (indirectly herself and the other siblings). Her mom continued to live in that poor state for like half to one year before one day the brother come back to find her dead beside the bed, probably trying to climb up after falling over. Housekeeping is a basic individual matter; If the house is smelly and dirty, whose fault can it be? If the 6 sons and daughters all refuses to visit the mother, who shoulders the blame? If the daughter has so much pity for the mother, she can always bring the mother back and live with her, so why didn't she do that? Even if the mother refuses to do so, the daughter could at least clean up the house for her, right? is there anybody worth our sympathy in this story at all? I'd rather spend my sympathy on those stray cats and dogs in SPCA. Quote

Thats a very sad case you shared FattChoy. If you're Chinese it's not too far fetched. We have a significant self-sacrificing trait, as far as I see .... although not always. I'm sure if my friend asked her 90yo mom if she should sell off the apartment to get the funds to give the mom a good life, the mom would definitely rubbish it. Probably would have said, "I'm already old and would be gone soon. Let the young ones inherit it" When another of my Beijing friend got married, his dad gifted him an apartment. His dad worked in a food factory as a labourer and nickled and dimed his way since the 80s to buy for his son an eventual family home. In China if a young man has no house and car he's deemed not marriage worthy. So not only did his dad bought the apartment before capitalism drove up the prices beyond a normal person's reach, his dad also single handedly takes care of his dementia wife (my friend's mother) so that my friend can focus on his own young family. Really take my hat off to some folks who do that. Edited November 9, 2019 by FattChoy Quote

The daughter may have recognized that the mother did not want to depart from her house, which was her refuge even if it was not cared for. A better solution would have been for the mother, the owner of the house, to get her children together and told them: "I am not going to live much longer, and you would inherit this house of mine. But I have the freedom to leave it to a charity, which I will do unless I see a change in your attitudes. You will all come to clean and work on the house, make repairs or have them made, and leave it in perfect condition. I also need that you all visit me frequently and care for me. If you do so the improvements in the house will benefit you when you inherit the house. If any of you is not willing to honor your mother and collaborate, this is fine. I will just leave you off my will." . Edited November 9, 2019 by Steve5380 Quote

I wish I could tell you how to overcome this sadness, but I think that it is unavoidable. If you live long enough and you have good feelings, you will have to mourn the passing of people you love. It is inevitable as much as we cannot avoid losing our first teeth. I just made a one week trip to South America for the only purpose to visit my beloved aunt, 94 y.o. and in very delicate state. She recognized me and was happy to see me, my two cousins and I we were around her most of the time, and when I left I told her "till next time" and we smiled. Two days later I got a call from my cousin telling me that she had passed away in her sleep. This was the best that could happen to her, but my heart is broken. (it has not yet recovered from the loss of my friend one year ago). I am a strong man but I often cry out of grief. What may be helpful is to have been kind to the diseased so that no feelings of guilt add to the grieving for the loss. Then, with clear conscience we can find consolation in that they don't suffer anymore and are in peace. Quote

FattChoy Posted November 10, 2019 Posted November 10, 2019 (edited) 3 hours ago, Guest Guest said: @FattChoy: u mean your friend is selfish because of the property? Sad ... I think it is important to look back at the theme and question of the thread starter, which is basically asking - 'parents aging, old and going to die, and that thought makes me sad. What can I do to overcome it?' In my Beijing friend's mom case, it was more than just the need for housekeeping; she needed round the clock care. For many years the old lady's eldest son shouldered this responsibility where he would use her pension money to buy her food and cycle over to deliver it. One day someone crashed into his bicycle and he couldn't do it anymore. Since the younger son who lived with her could not give a damn, my friend periodically came over from the other side of Beijing, buy her food and even brought her spouse over to clean up the mess, scrub the toilets etc. This was not a sustainable solution as my friend have her own family to take care and can't come everyday. I don't know about them but I totally saw this worst case scenario coming. [15 years ago my own old aunt died in her bathroom after slipping, and the neighbours alerted her children after she was not seen out for 2 days. She lived alone although she (also) had 6 children, and all of them lived on the island. Her daughter who was supposed to be on rotation visit couldn't make it that fateful day. The ironic thing was most of my cousins were well to do]. My suggestion to my Beijing friend to sell the apartment was of course outrageous, extreme, easier said than done and probably just a passing comment where I treated their situation like a heartless mathematical problem. They would have probably objected and exploded into a full blown family fight if they heard of it. But in the end they continued to implement their wonky adhoc solution until the old lady died by herself. In my opinion I think parents dying is sad but her mom dying after barely surviving in a state of undercare and obvious prolonged neglect is atrocious. So yeah, they are all selfish, over money - some more than others. For myself, my own principles on what to do with aging parents was moulded after a chat with a close older friend who worked in many jobs overseas his whole life. At that time I was working in Beijing and my mom fell ill at home, but thank god my siblings took care of her. It bothered me that I couldn't be there for her and I asked my friend if it bothered him too in his own case. To my surprise he said he had zero regrets cos he actually saw it coming, chose to stop working overseas during those years and was there for his mom at her time of fragility till her very end. I was like, "Wow...great call on that, dude. Fantastico!". One of my motto in life and work is Woody Allen's saying - "Showing up is 80% of success" and I'm determined to make this my deliberate decision for me and my mom. At the end, I too want to be able to say that I have no regrets either. Edited November 10, 2019 by FattChoy Quote

Guest Life Posted November 10, 2019 Posted November 10, 2019 Excuse me, bitches. This thread is about 'PARENTS GETTING OLD", simple English nobody understand? Anyway, Parents getting old is one thing, if ailments set in, it is quite another thing. If your parents mobility became challenged, than you may have to prepare to quit your job, look for nursing care, a maid or day-care center. If one of your parents is still able to take care of their partner, you are lucky. If it is single parent, than It is a journey you have to prepare to take to look after them. In reality, nothing comes free. Be prepared to spend quite a sum to take care of your elderly. This is Singapore, not denmark, you get the drift. Quote

What about this possibility of you guys falling down from your bed in the middle of the night, and suffer from partial paralysis because of that? And since you do not have anyone caring for you, you might not be found until your corpse start rotting and that's the only clue of your death to make anyone call for police help. Such accident can happen to anyone living alone. Not a situation perculiar to elderlies only. If anything, it’s more a safety issue than purely an elderly issue. Although being weak physically that comes with age does complicate such situation when it happens. Communal living lo .. may be a possible approach and it is a trend catching up in many developed countries, wherein elderlies find safety living in a community. Keep an eye out for one another. Fear is very paralysing indeed. Which makes it all the more necessary to start thinking and prepare for such situations early. It actually takes a society to make such things happen. Quote

And since you do not have anyone caring for you, you might not be found until your corpse start rotting and that's the only clue of your death to make anyone call for police help. . The morbid part includes the time when you lie on the floor, thirsty and hungry, and crying in pain with nobody to help you for two or three days before you slowly and surely feel your life seeps out from you.... Don't buy bed, buy a short frame bed. Stop climing up and down. Stop smoking, drinking, eating unhealthy food or exercise like a pro. Stop collectng rubbish to obstruct spaces. Stop quarrelling, bitching and boasting. Stop thinking too far, stop dreaming and hoping. Take each day as it goes by and you will be safe and if you were to go, will go easily without having to wake up and be happy that your Gay life finally ended, no more sufferings in this straight world. Then you will wake up, and found that your are born into a good family, no more gay but a beautiful girl who will eventually married to a wonderful man of your dream. Think along that line. Quote

She married my uncle when I was 3 years old, and she told me she fell in love with that little boy I was at that time, and I fell in love with her. This love has lasted over 70 years! This is why I am grieving like from the loss of a mother. 3 hours ago, Guest Legit said: His Aunt is old. Thus this thread is about old people so it is legit. Now get back k to the topic of elderly. The bodily image, so charming, is trampled by old age. Even those who live to a hundred are headed — all — to an end in death, which spares no one, which tramples all.[9] I fully agree with your Buddha. We are born without our will. We accept life and we take on the responsibility to direct and care for a human body. Our hearts open to let in the people we love. And then... these people are ripped away from us when they die. This is abominable!!! Even the most evil person does not deserve to be treated in such ugly way by life Quote

I didnt say im lonesome. I meant that after my parents pass on, my fate is unknown as all this while my priorities has been them. And this topic is not abt gays its about people. Your comment is not exactly logical. Quote
Guest Guest Posted July 6, 2021 Posted July 6, 2021 I was never close to my dad, all that I remember was he will beat me up with his leather belt when I was young. He never did that to my other siblings. He passed on years ago, after many years of body sickness including dementia. It still pains me when I saw him gasping for air during his final moments. My mum is 80 years old now, still doing well albeit with some seniors’ common illnesses. I try to visit her more often now, although I had never confided in to her, or any of my family members ever. I guess accompany her would at least make me feel I am doing something as a son. I can’t bear her any grand children, which fortunately my siblings do. However, they were not able to give her any pocket money, which that is a trade-off for me. Yes seeing her getting older and more frail over the years saddens me. Quote
