i did a check on what a male maid should be called cos i thought maid is used typically for female (interestingly, i found out the word "maid" is usually used for female servant and is closely associated with the word "maiden"). anyway, here's what i got from wiki.answers. My domestic helper is in her early 40s.

She was unable to understand, lest speak a word of English nor Mandarin but she picked it up fast.

Now they are like burung kakak dua (2 good friends)..

 

Ts, if your mom (like mine) is wheel-chaired bounded, then your choice of a maid should be

b. married/divorced and have at least 1 child

c.  strong - not fat!

I intend to hire a maid to take care of my eldery mum. Any of the bros here who have experienced in hiring maids could advise:-

a. what is the market price for indonesian, myanmar and pinoy maids ?

b. is agent fee a ONE time payment ? or every time I change maid, have to pay agent fee ?

c. can maid levy be lesser or even waive ? if waive, under what circumstances ?

d. is it true that most maids DO NOT get paid for a few months until they have paid off their `loans' to their respective countries agent ?

e. is it the employer have to buy health insurance for maid ?

f. the employer have to buy airtickets for maid return trip even though it is for her home visit (i.e own vacation)?

My suggestion is stick to Indo maid, Pinoy maid nowadays getting snobbish especially if you hire those who has attain a education background. 

 

My previous maid was a pinoy, totally one of a kind of maid i ever seen. She could steal your food and eat, does not respect whoever in the house and lazy.

a) I've hired only Myanmar maid. Think theirs is the cheapest compared to Indo and Filipino maids. Also there is a difference between new maids and experienced maids. When my Myanmar maid was new, I paid her $450 + $15 (if she doesn't take day off). I was also inexperienced and asked my colleague for advice. That was almost 4 years ago.

 

b) eveytine you need an agent for a new maid, you'll need to pay agent fee. Unless the new maid is not satisfactory within the first few days.

 

c) my maid levy was $120 per month. But because of taking care of the elderly, the levy is now $60 per month. I don't know about waiver

 

d) yes. It could be the first 6 months

 

e) yes. Also for medical checkups, medicine and insurance in case maid runs away.

 

f) yes

 

do note that not everything is black and white. 

Also if your Mother has mobility issues, get a strong maid.

you could also submit income tax relief if you are supporting your Mother.

My late mother was wheelchair bounded from 2004 and hiring a domestic helper was the only solution.  

 

My top priority was someone who has children of their own.  After taking care of their own kids, they should be able to handle the needs of an older person - the feeding and washing.

 

Fortunately for me, I managed to get mine, an Indonesian, at the maids agency at the first instance.  Before engaging her, I brought her to my flat and allowed her to know the scope of her job.  She communicated with my mother, in the most hilarious pasar Melayu.  

 

The paperwork (including health insurance and medical check up and work permit) took 5 days after I paid a couple of thousand dollars to the agency.  She reported for work promptly and to be a good employer, take your time to explain the use of electrical items in the flat. 

 

Mine had never seen, much lesser used,  a microwave oven, a convection oven, induction cooker., Deep dryer, steamer, .Steam iron...Clothes dryer...The list goes on..Almost everything and anything.

 

Once she settled in, it was important to discuss food matters.  Perhaps I cooked, so it was not that difficult to explain the type of food for my mother and I.  

 

Give her some pocket money, ,say $50 initially to buy her female things on the first day...Yes I had never bought sanitary pads so I don't know those prices...

 

Government subsidy is another area you must tapped onto.  I paid none of the levy then as my mother had at least 3 handicaps listed by the authority.. check the internet and get a medical doctor to sign on the form , just any doctor whom had seen your mother.  Mine was signed by the outpatient clinic doctor.

 

Last but not least, be a good Abang, big brother to the domestic helper.  You need her more than she needs you. Give her some leeway like time to rest, time to watch her soap operas, surf the internet, cook her type of food besides ours. Never scold her for any mistakes - just blame yourself for not explaining things properly to her. 

 

Remember to incentivise and reward her accordingly.  My kakak was given domestic money to buy all the daily necessities...Please no questions asked..If she used the money to buy curry puffs, so be it.. Don't ever scruntise over a few dollars..Be as loving and caring towards her cos she is doing the job you refused.

Also, what people say about Pinoy Maid is quite true! Get an indon one and someone who hasn't worked in sg before. U must put in effort to teach her SLOWLY. But it should work out. Anw you are getting help from another human being so it's also luck. If she's cunning or sly or up to no good, won't rly know. 

 

Treat The Maid with respect and be kind. In turn she might do the same.

Yes, Pinoy maid is a no no.  Get an Indo maid who is NEW to Singapore. If you get someone who worked here before, she has EXPECTATIONS.  And lastly, no RETURNED maid too. They are returned to the maid agency by employers due to problems.

Be careful if you are not at home most of the time except for your mum though. My advice is to hook up a CCTV system in every room. Sounds a bit paranoid, but after what happened with Pinoy maid that my mum had, and another my friend had, I think it is better safe than sorry. In both incidences, both my mum and my friend treated their domestic help very well. However, when it came time to go home at the end of their contract, they also stole stuff from them!

In my opinion, there are/will be good and "not so good" maids from any country. It boils down to luck and how you treat them. They are leaving their family behind to work abroad. Treat them nicely and they will reciprocate. 

 

My personal experience. 

My parents got us(my siblings and I) a Filipino maid to take care of the family as both mum and dad are working adults. 

It's true that some Filipino maids might have slightly higher education background as compared to her counterparts from other country. She was able to help us out with our primary school homework. If we have any cuts or small illness, she can attend to it unless it requires a doctor, simply because she can read, she knows when to use a burnt cream when to use antiseptic cream. 

 

We gave her money to buy groceries and stuff she wants. Bring her along for holiday. Have her eating with us together(I know some maid are asked to eat behind or afterwards). We took care of her when she is sick also. 

 

My advise would be to treat ur domestic helper like a family for a start. We are all humans afterall, our heart will melt. You have more to lose than the maid.

It totally depends on the characters of the maid and the employer. Sometimes things work out, sometimes things don't.

You can be nice to her and that is fine. Most importantly the patient whom the maid was looking after, must equally be good and polite too.  Recent years have seen indo maid killing the patient because both could not get along while the owner (like abang) was away for work.
