Was discussing where in singapore we should buy a home.

We went to visit Marine One Residence near to Marina Bay MRT. My friend liked the view of the bay where we imagine we could see Fireworks over marina bay.

A second site we saw was One Pearl Bank, we like the fact it was near the city and on top of a hill.

Of course all these were window shopping as the places were very expensive.

What is your ideal place to stay assume money is not an issue.

First is upcoming great eastern waterfront (near downtown)

2nd is Sentosa/keppel (lots of activities)

3rd punggol marina (can wakeboard)

4th ECP (run cycle swim)

5th pasir ris near aranda country club

Recommend you to take a look at jadescape where it is within walking distance to the notorious Mc Itchy ;D Or if you like to stay on hill / high ground, can take a look Normanton Park.

Absolutely,  there are some new condo in that area and more on the way,  with the extension of circle line, expansion of sentosa and the future plan of this area, nothing can go wrong for an investment in this area.

East Coast Katong the best!!!

Tanjong Rhu-Katong belt is still the best place to live! Not super urban but still relatively accessible to many places in town.

I fully agree that Katong is perhaps the best location to dwell. It is not as busy as the city centre and yet it is good enough for leisure, good restaurants and near most facilities like hospitals, good malls and less dense in population density. My family home in Sentosa is boring, far too deadly  at night with about thirty neighbors keeping to themselves though we live here almost past twelve years. The other side of Sentosa is too vibrant with activities that it tends to be rowdy. Frankly i envy those of my good friends living in Katong.

No landed property for me , hate reptiles , insects and snakes , no condo for me , hate gates  just like living in prisons , although I know it is meant for security reasons, in HK , security guards know who else is coming back with the owner . Prefer to stay in a  matured estate near city area HDB flat  for the convenience …..

Yes, Katong has many old traditional shops. Greeneries, seaside and also quite close to town area with several direct buses.  Not many tall buildings, mostly shop houses and landed property.   People there are not boastful, as compared to those staying in Bukit Timah.

So many biased preferences for Katong. Why nobody mention wild wild west?

The west side story.  Saturated with factories, refinery industries, recycle center, shipyard, containers...etc.  I fainted when I was there.  The only good thing was a group of army boys gave me free resuscitation until I woke up and became energetic again.

Indeed a lot of character in Katong. I should consider purchasing a simple weekend apartment here. My current home is mainly foreigners ...only three out of 28 secluded  properties in my neighbourhood area are local. Even then they all kept to themselves. It is even worse than Bt Timah which you did mentioned earlier in your post.

I recalled vividly a very well known song Di-Tanjung Katong about this marvelous area. its atmosphere remain true to this very day in spite of development where most neighbours are local and friendly.

The smart buyer will buy some where in the middle of Singapore on elevated land like Upper, Serangoon , Kovan ,areas,

As every day we hear the climate getting hotter and sea level rising,

By seaside, waterfront, one day you will find all the parked cars in underground become submersible vehicles.

Sea level rise may come and happen sooner than scientist predict.

And it will happen to all waterfront properties around the world.

Marymount, Jadescape all far from rivers, low lying areas.

We bought somewhere inland , elevated and far away from rivers.

Guess where ?

Aiya!!!  When climate change, sea level goes up. The little red dot will perish from the map.  Where got high or ow area to choose?  Even the iconic Raffles Towel will be fully submerged.  Unless, you buy a property in Nepal lor.  Very high and far away from sea catastrophe.

Waterfront homes generally harder to maintain, and metallic parts (hinges, locksets etc) breakdown faster due to the moister salty air. Those around Keppel I imagine will be worse is cos those cruise ships expel fumes at higher level, and guess where the soot goes. I know some buildings there (property managers) complain of the upkeep from soot dirtying the external, imagine if you have your windows open all the time.

Stay in matured estate near city area HDB only convenience if you work in city area. Imagine if you work in tuas, from city area to tuas is far. Flat near city area either is super crazy ex if want newer flat or cheap but super old flat.

Stay near reservoir also not good.  People were complaining about small flies crawling all over their windows and inside the house.   Changi village still the best, near seaside, very cruisy and not so many ships, unlike Keppel and Jurong area.  Also got many trees in Changi blocking the sea salt, unlike Keppel and Jurong where not only the sea salt blew in your face, ship soots and also the fume coming from nearby factories.  Bad for health.

Changi village so far out, going out and going home not convenience. Unless you work in nearby loyang industrial park.

Not everyone prefer to work in CBD.  East side has many jobs vacancies too. From paya lebar to Loyang. You pick.  CBD too stressful , meal there also very expensive, train always packed during peak.

Not to mention reservoir areas tend to have higher incidence of dengue.

I heard those staying near to the sea often see corrosion of their furniture because the sea breeze has salt particles.

Is it true?

Yes heard too. And salty breeze also de-moisturize your skin quicker and makes one look more older.

Yes it is true particularly for metallic parts. Salt has corrosive effect on metals. So use furniture with minimum or no metallic components.

Some of the houses at Goodman area are really really gorgeous. They're like mini-fortresses even. Then again, if I lived in one of those houses I would dread spring cleaning- by the time I cleaned the house the place where i started would have gotten dusty again.

Firstworld problems indeed.

I was brought up here in my very early childhood age until much later when we got a very quite home in the cove of Sentosa. I missed Goodman Road area very much. I recalled how close my family was then to my immediate neighbours which is a real contrast from my current location. Yes Goodman is in a nice area in Katong which is rich in shophouses architecture, nice cafes, quaint little shops and not rowdy.

Be careful, because the One Pearl Bank location is very haunted. (This was mentioned in other BW threads.)

Last time, the round-shaped flat that used to occupy that land (it's since been demolished) had a lot of 'stories' from the occupants.

Historically, there was a hospital there (TTSH?) where a lot of patients died due to the poor standard of care in the old days. Plus the former police station there ever executed (by hanging) Japanese war criminals after WW II.

That area is overall not good. Feels spooky, even during the day.

I like the type of HDB flat that is double-storeyed. Looks very cute. I've been to a few before - one was at Jurong; one was at Bishan; one was at Kovan, and one was somewhere at Upper Serangoon.

If I could ever stay in such a flat, it would be a dream come true. I'm not fussy about the location as long as the estate is more or less convenient i.e. has nearby hawker centre, supermarket and other small shops, MRT, swimming pool.

I don't need to necessarily stay near Orchard Rd as I don't always go there anyway.
