Smell came from the restaurant.  Mixture of fish sauce, lemon sauce,  lemon grass, blachan, dried vegetables...etc.  Then cook it slowly and let the smoke permeat inside an unventilated mall which air-con is not in full working condition and you get the "unique" thai smell.

Back in 1990s and early 2000s, there’s lots of thai construction workers / foreign labour in sg. Most are in 20s or maybe some 30s.  During weekends, they like to hang out at golden mile. Some of them are quite fit and not bad looking. But now not alot of thai foreign labour in sg, either they are more costly or the young thais are more educated and dun work in such industries anymore. 
 

I vaguely remember there were news reports (i think it was tabloid like TNP) reporting some young thai / burmese guys offering sexual services then. most likely to make quick bucks and they can be found at golden mile. Im sure some of the clients are male. But with lesser of them in sg, such activities are not heard of anymore.

It was so , so , so long ago that Singapore had Thai workers, 

 

I tell you why Thai workers fell out of favor in Singapore. 

 

Reason 1,  thai workers have great difficulty picking up pasar level English used to communicate between their Supervisors and construction laborers, Thai farmers brain development are stunted and have great diffuculty learning Worker level English , have difficulty following instructions, when the  labor market opened up to Indian and Bangla workers, whoa, Thais fell out of favor even more quickly. 

 

 

2) Thai workers  love to drink alcohol as it is their culture back in Thailand after a back breaking day's work , to knock down a few beers to release work stress, as a result they often wake up in the morning wasted, red eyed and not ready for work early in the morning. 

 

3) Thai workers do not take to easily being told off and scolded by our local supervisors , engineers, even if their work performance is sub par . In Thailand , the Thai people are used to the sabai sabai way of life, a relaxed way of looking at the world and a fatalism o f life being predetermined. I think the biggest problem was uncontrolled alcohol consumption that was not restricted to just Saturday night and Sunday off day. 

 

4) There is this mindset that Thailand and Thai people is somehow superior race, as they have never been colonised by western powers before so to be ordered around by 'lesser' supervisors was something they are not used to, and breeds sliw boilling resentment . 

 

5) most of the Thai workers come from Isan, in the early 2000s, the Thai gomen started to pour more funds into developing and raising the living standards of Thai citizens of Northeast Thailand, and more oppotunities become available,  Thai people also Thailand have everything avaikable to survive so less and less feel need to venture out of Thailand to make a living, Thailand have food a plenty and will not starve in Thailand, so even lesser Thai come out to work as laborers.

 

But point 1 is the main reason. 

 

 

 

This is what my friend who works in a construction company told me so  

 

Besides, Thai prefer to open Thai food restaurant in many new western countries, Thai food is well loved around the world, ooen Thai restaurant better, less dangerous than construction worker and earn even more, less tiring.

Unless you need to buy thai products.  Golden Mile is no longer as safe as it used to be, due to unpredictable violence that hit news headlines.

I have 2 fond memories of Golden Mile Shopping Centre:

 

(1)  In the 70s, when it was not yet a gathering place for Thai foreign workers, the shops were mostly rented by social escort agencies and there was a large night club that covered most part of Level 2.  The night club is just next to the toilets.  Very often male customers will go to the toilet in a drunken stupor to let loose of the liquor or beer they have consumed.  No inhibition, they will just lower their pants and underwear halfway down their thighs and stand at the urinals to urinate, unconcerned that I am eyeing their goods.  Am there mostly for eye candy but on some rare occasions, some really horny guy will ask why I am looking and whether I like to suck cock ... then the rest is history.
