Or your overall pronunciation? 2) how correct your spoken sentence sounds? 3) knowledge of vocabulary (words)? If you identify the AFIs specifically its easier to target and it'll seem more achievable. eg if you want to improve your vocabulary (want more 'cheem' options to your usual words for example), watch more talk shows from native speaking countries like the US, UK or australia. Then as you watch, make a conscious effort to listen out for words used that you've not heard before or find interesting. Same goes for pronunciation, grammar, etc. but want to sell koyok like ang moh? that one high level. Their ability to smoke is another level one. Try to write as correct as possible. Using simple words but with good syntax. Read your posts over again, and don't hesitate to edit them if you see a better way to express yourself. Don't mind if people comment about your English, listen if they are helpful, disregard if they are malicious. To speak a language correctly conveys a good image. Don't worry too much about idioms that may reveal that the language is not your native language. It causes even a better impression to speak well a language that is not our native one. With proper guidance, practice is the key. You have to be committed. You have to be thick-skinned. Don't be shy to ask. Don't be embarrassed if you make a mistake. It is all part of the process. Just don't fall into the White Supremacy trap, trying to aspire to speak like an "angmoh". Don't confuse accent with proper speech. Speaking with an "angmoh" accent does not make you a competent speaker. This is a myth. Likewise, speaking with a Singapore accent does not mean you are incompetent and using Singlish. Focus on proper pronunciation, stress pattern. Even after mastering pronunciation of most words, Mandarin speakers struggle to speak English naturally because of a lack of stress pattern in Mandarin (except for the very minimal 轻声). Every word is monosyllabic and stressed. English words are often not monosyllabic and the stress pattern is different for different words. Even the same word can have different stress patterns and this will result in a change in its meaning or form of verb. And in a sentence, one word "rolls" into the next so there is no need to enunciate every single word in a sentence. Key words will be enunciated more and given emphasis.
