While the presenter was trying to make the point that feeling gay was not necessarily an indication of being gay, this set of slides was seen as highly offending towards the LGBT community. Whoever opened the door for this person to talk to the kids is either blinded by his/her own religious beliefs, or hasn't processed the contents for the presentation. HCI is an independent school, and so it does have a lot more autonomy compared with the average secondary school. For those who say keep silent and it will blow over, it wouldnt. Now that this matter is being talked about and circulated, schools will think twice about repeating it. It is very important for us in the community not to have internalised homophobia within ourselves. Growing up, most of us unconsciously adopt it by accepting mainstream ideals of who we are and the associating shame and stigma keeps us silent and in the shadows. If we dont contribute anything towards the community, but yet continue to enjoy the progress that comes with others putting out their necks for us, then the least we can do is to stop spreading this internalised homophobia by asking others not to be out there fighting the good fight.
