Remember Bugis Street 妖街皇后??

Recently, I had fun with someone in the sauna and found him look like a Hong Kong actor. I am very sure he's not this Hong Kong actor as the guy I had fun with is much younger and speak with typical singapore english.

The excitement lingered me for days and made me go searching for the name of this HK actor and he is 林伟, Vincent Lam Wai. I found him very charming. He has acted in numerous HK Cat III movies and even in an old Singapore movie production -- The Bugis Street. In this movie, a Singapore actor (oops, forgot his name) cross-dressed as travs and ate his dxxxx in one of the scene.

Anyone knows if he has acted in any recent movie ?

I was clearing my old portable hard disk and found some old video files unexpectedly.  One of the video files was "Bugis Street", a movie which brought back much nostalgic feelings.  It was a movie from an external perspective (Hong Kong director, Yonfan) of a dark history of our nation that had been subtly lost in the passage of time.  Bugis Street nowadays is a venue packed with retail and dining, with no trace of its notorious past.  Back in the 1990s, a movie with frontal male nudity was rare and daring in view of the strict movie censorship regulations.  In this movie, there were nude scenes of lead actor Michael Lam, a Hong Kong model, as well as some Caucasian hunks and local part-time actors.  One can also see the Manhunt winner, Benedict Goh, in his youthful heydays.

While surfing for information about the film, I was shocked to read about the demise of the lead actress, Hiep Thi Le, in 2017.  Coincidentally news of the passing of Chadwick Boseman at a young age of 43 also flashed across the media on the same morning.

May each of us cherish every fleeting day and lead a happy life.

Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Lien, portrayed by Vietnamese actress Hiep Thi Le, is the main protagonist. Despite having worked for a time as a servant in a household whose "young master" adored her in her hometown of Malacca in West Malaysia, the young girl comes across as having led a surprisingly sheltered life. She journeys to Singapore to seek employment as a maid in the Sin Sin Hotel along Bugis Street.

She seems thoroughly content for a time to possess a naïve, romanticised view of the rambunctious goings-on at the hotel where she witnesses "the sad departure of an American gentleman" from the home-cum-workplace of "his Chinese girl". The guest is actually a presently-sober but angry American sailor who has belatedly discovered that the Singaporean Chinese prostitute he picked up in Bugis Street and spent a drunken night with happens to be a trans woman. Before long, the new employee Lien finds out that many of the long-term lodgers of the budget establishment, whose room rental rate is S$3, whether it be for an hour or the entire day and night, are trans women.

Although her first reaction to seeing someone with breasts and a penis is one of revulsion which causes her to contemplate fleeing the neighbourhood, she instead listens to and heeds the cajoling and advice of Lola, the trans hotel resident who has treated her well from the start of her stint. She comes to accept the unique, complex personalities of the unorthodox community, who in turn also begin to accept her. As she learns to look beyond the surface, she is rewarded with the generous friendship of the cosmopolitan and sophisticated Drago, who has returned from Paris to minister to his/her dying but loving and tolerant mother.

While Lien learns the ways of the world via her encounters with Meng, the slimy, often underdressed boyfriend of Lola, as well as night-time escapades on the town with the Sin Sin Hotel's other denizens, she begins to see beauty in unlikely places and to grow despite the presence of ugliness in an imperfect world.

i just streamed and finish the movie again... nostalgia! i actually rather like it, so much better than so many big budget over polished over produced tv shows (aka china tv dramas, hollywood blockbusters)...

but the available movie is still in the 1995 production of 360p, aka vcd quality! has this movie ever been remastered and reissue as HD bluray or dvd? anyone knows?

Couldn't stand the pretentiousness in likely Golden Mile Complex.  Come to think of it, selling exoticness like 'The Wedding Banquet'.  After all these years, still appreciate something along the line of 'An Early Frost' and 'The Sum of Us'.

yang fan movies all like dat lah... his style mah... but one thing is he films it as it is - set, decor, actors as they are, very raw. once a while come back to basic also refreshing esp after years of bombardment by over lush over produced china dramas, and hollywood blockbusters.

btw, anyone notice lola 2 lovers? meng (very sexy micheal lam, my lust) bikini and gstring are all white. after he left lola for good at the end of the show, lola new lover wah (华仔) bikini underwear is black! yang fan likes details of this sort! hahaha

Damn, the Bugis Junction I recall was the real thing. Not the superficial fluff of a movie. hahahah. it's also not as nice as the movie make it out to be even in the most depressing parts of the show. I know of sistas then and hear of their fun and their laments of that time.

aiyo, in the movie, they worked at bugis street. it was as i remembered, the hanging lights, the foldable tables with the red cloth, hawker, and sailors and the working girls screaming and laughing...

the movie story happened elsewhere, a walking distance away from bugis street at sin sin hotel. this hotel real or fake then i have no idea.

where got bugis junction then....

sadly , most of the 彩虹 didi and ger ger of that era who are in their fifties now paid the ticket of S$7.50 just to see the actor appear in shower scene, white bikini brief scene, white thong scene, drunken sailor scene, and cursed and cursed when those chao ah kuas took up screen time to get to bang virile, hairy , caucasian young s sailor.

I am sure audiences were cursing under their breath why the TV were so stiff, and exaggerated in their presentation and acting,

and closet cross dressers and Tv  in the dark of theatre was thinking to themselves that they themselves would have done a better job of acting all campy and drag , had they been selectednto appear in the movie, and  cursing the trans who appeared will break their own legs tripping over their high heels and choke themselves with their own false eye lashes and mascara wands.

vitriol directed at Ernest Seah esp. .

really a waste of celluloid material.

During 90s, tis movie was considered 尺寸大胆. Probably in asian RA movie seldom can c male actor exposing genital. Still remember 1 part, a drag was playing a guy genital wif a feather on bed.

Sadly, Singapore still censored quite a few scene even e movie was rated RA. Try ur luck to watch e HK version.

That scene reminds me of my 1990 tekong BMT during showers when all mates were in the open shower playing water, smacking each other butts with towels..... So bromance! 😆

Bugis Street, was my first "porn" video in those days.  I was very much lured to the uncensored element rather than the story.  When internet became a thing, and many gay sex videos (mostly American and Japanese) came into Singapore market "illegally",  I find Bugis Street rather lack lustre as compared to other library of gay porn videos I have watched.
