Malaysia Budget Hotel Boom

In the news today-

Budget everything seems to be the rage now- budget airlines, budget airport, budget tourists and now, inevitably, budget hotels. And it has taken off in a big way in Malaysia.

'Australian Roger Dunphy discovered the Green Hut after asking friends where to say while visiting KL. It came highly recommended by a friend who stayed at the budget hotel no fewer than 7 times. Located in a recently gentrified area in the heart of the city, the hotel has everything Mr Dunphy wanted and all for under RM100 ($46) a night. "The rooms are clean. It's well-run, the staff are not grumpy, everything works. And there are no rats!" said Roger.

"They want to experience the local culture. They want to know how tek tarik is make and they dont want to pay RM10 for lasi lemak in a five-star hotel," a budget hotel owner said.

The country's cheap accommodation used to be associated with sleaze and by-the-hour room rentals, but today's budget hoels are aimed at the new set of travellers, and score not only with smart looks, but also have a reputation for being hip. The first Tune hotel (started by Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia), which opened in KL in April sports a bright red wave painted on the outside, while its room come in orane, green or beige. The hotel also has a 24-hour convenience store, ATM, moneychanger, free internet access and a coffee shop. Here, rooms can be had for as low as RM9.99. While business travellers continue to choose five-star hotels, tourists are increasing being lured to the burgeoning low-cost ones.' ST

try tunehotel.com

not necessary cheaper, only good if you book few months down the road. (same as budget flight)

if book for next month, easily RM80

somemore no towel, no soap...

for that amount, i can get a 3 star hotel...

Another budget hotel in the news (for all the right reason). :D

'A bed for the night for just theprice of one stick of satay? This is what the new super-budget Malaysian hotel stayOrange is offering in a promotion to attract the backpacker crowd. For a bunk bed space in a 8 to 10 sq foot room travellers who book their accomodatiion online will pay only 35cents. Internet Wi-fo, water heater, aircon and the use of a locker are also thrown in. The only catch> U have to book at least six months in advance to get that price. The launch of stayOrange this month - whose first hotel is at Petaling Street in KL's Chinatown- follows AirAsia's foray into the hotel industry with its no-frills TuneHotel 3 mths ago' NP

Pan Pac - diagonally across City Square, home of City Girls - used to have a transit rate at around RM90. Just call them branch in Singapore to find out. Not sure whether you need to carry a luggage or two.
