Designing Your Wedding Invitation: The Detailing on Your Invite Card is More Important Than You Think!

Much thought should go into the design of your wedding invite. This is what will help you create auspicious first impressions from your guests; and it is important that the energies associated with the card are all positive. This is created when auspicious motifs are added onto the card. Most powerful and popular amongst Chinese couples is the dragon/phoenix motif, as this is believed to bring about a long and happy marriage. There is also much to be said for symbolism when designing your invite, because what you put on your card will manifest what becomes reality for you as a couple. This is not a time to be subtle! The marriage invitation is probably one of the most important announcements in your life, so do be brave and courageous in singing your happiness to the world!

designing-your-wedding-invitation-card-0

1 COLOUR: While white is an extremely “bridal” colour, to the Chinese, white is more suitable for yin events such as wakes and funerals, than yang ones such as weddings. If you want to go for a classy Western theme and are insisting on white, it is better to go for a warm cream colour or an off-white shade than stark white. But there is nothing quite like RED for good old-fashioned yang energy. You will notice that all traditional Chinese invitations are designed in red or with prominent red elements. If you want a strong theme running through the wedding in a colour other than red, pick one that denotes lively, happy energy rather than dull, stagnant energy. Pinks, purples, orange and magenta hues are all auspicious. But avoid colors like olive, brown and black.

designing-your-wedding-invitation-card-02 TEXT: The best colour for the text on the invite is black. This is a strong neutral colour that does not tread on any taboos. Avoid red text and gold text, as to the Chinese, these colours are usually reserved for use on headstones of those who have passed on. Ensure also that the text is not too small, as you do not want your older guests to struggle when reading your invite. Let not your INVITATION card generate any feelings of frustration or negativity. Relative size of text is thus important; the names of the bride and groom on the invite should be larger than the other details. Remember that on your wedding day, the bride and groom are the king and queen of the day.

3 DIMENSIONS: It is a good idea to tap auspicious dimensions when designing your card. Try to let at least one side of your card follow the Yi direction, which is especially suitable for marriage. This is between 16.2cm and 21.5cm long, as this dimension brings the couple the luck of a long-lasting marriage full of love and healthy, filial children. If you cannot tap the Yi dimension, you can also go for the Kwan direction, between 21.5cm and 27cm, which is also auspicious.

4 SHAPE: Regularity and balance is important, especially for a wedding card, so do go for a regular shape when designing your card. A square shape is best, although you can also go for a rectangle, octagon or circle. Don’t design a wedding card in a triangular or star-shape, as the points on the card are inauspicious for an occasion like a marriage.

designing-your-wedding-invitation-card-05 FOLDS: Avoid cards that open up in the middle (like a door), especially those where the names of the Bride and Groom are placed on either side of the opening. When the card opens, this splits up the couple. This kind of symbolism is extremely unlucky for couples, and can even cause them to split. Similarly, envelope seals are equally unlucky. While it may look elegant to have a sticker or wax seal of the bride and grooms’ initials to seal the envelopes, every time a guest opens the envelope and the sticker or seal is torn, it sends a new jab of bad energy to the couple.

Modern Architectural Features: Can They Cause Feng Shui Problems?

There is a NEW style of architecture taking over city landscapes. Increasingly, we are seeing gravity-defying shapes, soaring angles, cutting edges and plenty of infinity-type pools creating modern marvels of construction wonder. We see them in London, in many US cities, in Shanghai and Beijing, in Japan and nearer home, plenty of examples in Singapore, and yes, also in wealthy suburban neighborhoods in Kuala Lumpur.

In the beginning when architects introduced these design wonders to the world, they were the domain only of the big property developments like hotels, museums, conference centers, resorts and the like; but these days, these features are also being incorporated into residential abodes.

Wow some of them soar but they also seem loud as they fiercely dominate their neighborhood. We see raw granite walls, escalating glass walls, rounded chrome pillars, endless infinity pools, LED lights, sharp angles and, gigantic box shapes… are these new architectural features good feng shui?

modern-architectural-features-01.jpg Cutting edges and bold angles are becoming more and more common.

It is impossible not to gasp in admiration at the sheer freshness and appeal of architectural features that make new homes stand out so prominently these days. It seems like floor-to-ceiling glass doors are so very IN, that having an infinity pool that appears to overflow into infinity is such a must have, that rows of poles have taken over from the solid fencing wall, that boxed-up elevations are being preferred to conventional shapes… and everywhere we see mirrors, glass, raw granite, chrome and abstract designs standing out as the main feature of houses. Often they define the houses in which they are incorporated instead of blending into the home’s overall design.

To a Chinese owner, and also to other owners mindful of the feng shui aspects of their abode, there is surely concern over how these new house shapes and design features can affect the luck of their family. These contemporary houses are beautiful indeed and they reflect new attitudes towards clean lines and minimalism, towards the simplicity of grey tones and whites. But what about the feng shui consequences of these features?

We discuss here two of the more popular features that are included into the design of privately-built homes that are also being incorporated into many new houses and condominiums being offered by property developers. There is no question here about the aesthetics, these features do bring a truly modern touch; they can look beautiful indeed, but it is important to also ask ourselves whether they will affect the good feng shui of the home?

If they are harmful, it might be necessary to have a rethink!

INFINITY POOLS

Ever since the stunning Marina Sands Bay hotel in Singapore unveiled their Sky pool to the public, there have been plenty of controversy and differing opinions about the feng shui impact of their infinity pool. Well, it has been several years now that Singapore has lived with (and some would say benefitted from) the pool. Here is a panoramic picture of this pool, which has attracted well-heeled tourists by the thousands from China. You can see that the pool is a sky pool, and according to the I Ching, water on top of mountain is a sign of grave danger because water turns destructive when it overflows. Does the pool overflow? It would seem so, but gossip has it that the management having consulted feng shui experts have kept the water level low enough not to overflow!

modern-architectural-features-02.jpg Infinity pools are all the rage in modern architecture these days. But are they good feng shui?

Nevertheless, the visual is of an overflowing effect, and we can see that the water does appear to be flowing towards the city. For sure, this pool has the potential to bring new prosperity to Singapore. This would seem to be what has happened, because since its unveiling, Singapore has been getting more prosperous. But for many living in the city state, Singapore has become a very expensive place to live in.

modern-architectural-features-03.jpg

Some time ago I was in Singapore for a day, and my driver there told me that the cost of basic necessities has escalated three to four times. He was not really complaining because he is an entrepreneur driver in that his van belongs to him so his income can keep up with inflation; but he does say that even making $500 a day (which comes up to $12,500 based on a 25 days working month) he is feeling the pinch. Note we are talking in Singapore dollars! If he lives across the causeway in Malaysia, he can live like a king! But even here in Malaysia, the cost of living is rising fast. But nothing like Singapore!

For sure, Singapore must hold something of a record for the worth of its real estate. Just last month, a residential property along the exclusive Nassim road went on the market with a price tag of S$300 million!

It seems that good big tai chi feng shui does bring prosperity to a city and its inhabitants, but this kind of prosperity incorporates the phenomenon of inflation and can thus be a double-edged sword.

What about the infinity pool in a humble home? Is it too strong a feature for a residential home?

Conventional feng shui advice would be to keep the size of your infinity pool proportional to your home; and try not to have it located on the upper levels of the home; and make sure the water is overflowing towards the home rather than flowing outwards. I do not see anything harmful about infinity pools per se, but a pool of water should always follow feng shui conventions.

So here, the orientation and placement location of the pool is of crucial importance.

You will need to make sure that when you have a pool at all, it should NOT be placed in a sector of the property where the house’s current flying star chart is indicating a 5 or a 2 as the water star. Your pool with its water will then be activating the power of the wu wang or illness stars of 5 and 2, and this is sure to cause the residents to endure some severe money problems. One’s financial situation becomes unstable! When the pool is placed away from the main house, check the compass reading of the sector occupied by the pool. Do make sure it is also not in the Northeast sector, as this is symbolically the place of the mountain. A pool here harms the sons of the family and can cause the son to lose the support of his parents.

PROTRUDING BOXED ELEVATIONS

modern-architectural-features-04.jpg Square-shaped buildings give off an extremely stark feel.

It seems like anything goes these days, especially when it comes to creating a dominant feature that defines the silhouette of a house. Just look at some of these examples of modern architecture, which feature protruding boxed elevations, some completely closed up on three sides, while others have cornered openings that allow glimpses into square-shaped homes. The visual is stark. Some people like the beautifully modern feel of such homes, but they do beg the question, would any of us really feel comfortable living in houses that look like this?

WHEN IS THERE TOO MUCH GLASS?

Houses that are completely glassed in i.e. having floor-to-ceiling windows made of glass all round usually have insufficient privacy. This may be fine when the house is part of a walled-in compound, but it becomes excessively transparent when the house directly faces an outside road and the interior of the house is visible to anyone driving past. Remember that your home must be your sanctuary, and you should ensure this vital aspect of the home is maintained.

modern-architectural-features-06.jpg Too many entrances into a home can “confuse” the chi.

Meanwhile, note that good feng shui requires there to be an obvious main door, so when you use plenty of floor-to-ceiling glass doors, you must also be sure to include an obvious main door in the design. This is where the principle chi energy enters. Without an obvious main door, good chi energy does not know how to enter. There might be good circulation of chi, but without a clear-cut main door, residents will find it difficult to appreciate the good opportunities that come their way. They will be blind to the overtures being made to them, much like missing the forest for the trees, missing the big picture, hence losing out!

It is important to not get carried away by your preferences for floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Honestly, you can have too much see-through glass. When more than fifty percent of your walls, balconies and windows are see-through glass, your house is definitely too transparent; even when you put drape curtains the flow of chi gets confused. Ideally, there should be three corners of solid walls and one side of glass doors/windows, than the other way around.

modern-architectural-features-07.jpg Stark white colour schemes are classy but can result in an overly yin environment.

For sure, when all four sides of your home are glass your house will lack too many things to be auspicious. Such homes are more suitable for plants than for people, because when homes go through daily cycles of yin and yang, it should never be completely yin or completely yang at any time. I have seen houses with so much glass that residents spontaneously have to use heavy drapes to block off sunlight causing excessive yang.

Homes need to have some kind of an anchoring wall at the back, which offers stability and support; just like all homes benefit from the support of the black tortoise hill behind. Rooms and corridors, walkways and halls need at least one solid wall to serve as a stabilizing factor to ensure that fortunes of residents are maintained.

modern-architectural-features-05.jpg Can you have a case of too much glass?

When there is too much glass inside the home, there are obvious dangers. The see-through effect of glass can lead to nasty accidents, and the flow of chi energy can also get confused. In countries where the sun is strong, it is easy for excessive yang energy to build up, causing residents to become restless.

modern-architectural-features-08.jpg Beware “floating staircases” which could lead to wealth leaking out.

Where there are floating staircases, it becomes a case of wealth slipping through the fingers of residents. Lost opportunities and a wasting away of resources will be the result. In any case, staircases should never have holes in between the steps, and worse yet when they are placed against a see-through glass wall which then magnifies the effect. Basically we should be careful about creating an atmosphere of instability caused by structures that appear to be suspended. This gives a visual that lacks balance within the home, as if one were living life on an edge, on the brink of falling over. This can be a feng shui flaw that can cause work and business problems to arise.

Merging Spaces

In order to create space, it is important to understand its true nature. Space is not just about how much square footage you have around you, but rather, it is what and how you utilize that space. How you treat these spaces will determine the mood and reaction you develop inside you…

merging-spaces-01.jpg Click to enlarge

DEFINING A SPACE

The question that begs is how do we create or define a space? To begin with, we need to assign a function to that space. In the example here, the general space has been subdivided into the main functional areas of the home, mainly the Living, Dining and Kitchen zones. Whilst each zone is able to function independently of the others, it is crucial how we treat the merging and separation of each zone; otherwise the ebb and flow of energy between the different areas gets disrupted.

When placed in an open-space concept, we need to understand that space is defined by its surroundings. We also need to be aware of how a room interacts within itself, and how it interacts with its adjacent spaces. In an open plan, what we want to avoid are the extremes where the rooms are so sparsely laid out that the defining line between living and dining is lost, resulting in a soul-less, barren environment. But neither do we want to segregate the rooms within themselves where we lose all forms of connectivity.

THE YIN AND YANG OF BARRIERS

Once we have defined our spaces, we will need to merge the spaces together in order to build a harmonious relationship between the rooms. To do so, we need to incorporate the use of open and close barriers. So what are these barriers? In essence, they are visual walls that prevent one from walking to the adjacent space, but they are designed in a closed or open concept depending on how we want to merge the spaces together.

merging-spaces-02.jpg

In this scenario, the living and dining space behind has been separated with a closed barrier system, whereby glimpses of the other space is obvious, but there is a physical barrier to allow both spaces to exist cohesively with each other.

The Open Barrier concept offers similar properties to the visual screen, but it is opposite, in that it forces a larger visual link, allowing both rooms to be connected to each other. But rather than having a screen as a barrier, it utilizes a practical approach, which in this case is a serving table where food is laid from the kitchen and picked up from the dining side.

Here, while there is a sense of visual connection between the dining and kitchen areas, both spaces are still separated and defined by their individual functions. It is important to take note that there is fine line between the merging of spaces and the combining of spaces. Without the use of a physical barrier, the functions of both rooms are combined as one where the boundary where the kitchen ends and the dining begins is blurred out. So unless we want to live in a large studio room, it is useful to consider the use of open and closed barriers as a means to merging rooms together.

MERGING THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR

If we want to merge the interiors to the exteriors, we need to first understand what design technique we are trying to achieve. The “merging” of spaces is not the same as the “combining” of spaces; i.e. if we place a sitting area outside by the porch and call it merging; well, sitting in nature is in its true essence sitting outside.

merging-spaces-03.jpg

The merging of two spaces is having two areas living side by side with each other, both having its own set of design parameters, but sharing the aesthetics and functionality of each other.

merging-spaces-04.jpg

As shown in the scenario, the living area is physically separated from the external landscape apart from the large bay windows used to create the visual link between the two areas. So rather than trying to force the living room to the exterior and combining both functions, consider the different types of design techniques we can use to achieve different effects.

The merging of spaces is highly advantageous in situations where we want to create a free-flow system throughout the home, where moving from one space to another is a seamless task, yet you are able to feel a sense of connectivity from room to room and from the interior to the exterior. This creates a sense of excitement when we move around and also allows each space to develop on its own, thereby creating its own unique character and design parameters.

Whenever you look at your home to renovate, consider the difference between the combining and the merging of spaces, and how you can use open and closed barrier systems to achieve the ideal aesthetic look for your interiors.

Twins: Can Their Destinies Be Different?

twins-destinies-different-01.jpg

Science defines identical twins as two individuals who have nearly the same genes being genetic replicas of each other. In medical terms, identical twins are known as “monozygotic”, which occurs when a single fertilized egg forms a zygot that divides into two embryos. Technically then, if you believe “DNA” defines how people behave and function, then two people born with exactly similar genetic make-up should also behave in exactly the same way. This in reality is not always the case!

There is the astrological viewpoint as well. Take the case of TWINS. When you cast a Paht Chee chart or do a Vedic astrological reading for a pair of twins, their charts would be virtually identical! And yet their lives may not turn out to be identical at all! Two people born in the same place, on the same day and within minutes of each other can end up very dissimilar and exhibit very different personalities! They need not be alike at all when it comes to the way they react, respond or think things through.

Let me share a case of two brothers who have been my friends since we were teenagers. They lived in my neighborhood and they are monozygotic twins born within five minutes of each other; but Eric and Aaron are very different personalities; and later, as we grew older, I realised that their lives in the years that followed became as different as the sun and the moon!

They look alike. Aaron and Eric look nearly identical, sharing the same tall physique, similar features and hairstyles. Few could tell them apart unless they dressed in different clothes, which they often did. Aaron preferred sports attire or proper shirt/pants, while Eric was more into the punk rocker look – metal-studded caps, torn jeans and rock t-shirts!

We often joked that all their parents’ “conservative” genes had gone into Aaron (the first born) because in so many ways, Aaron was such a star compared to Eric! At school, Aaron was definitely the more popular of the two, always getting better grades, excelling in sport and sciences, while Eric opted was more inclined towards music, literature and gothic culture. Of the two, Aaron came across as the “big brother” – chatty and confident, outgoing and sociable. He was into extreme sports while Eric preferred solitary moments spent sketching and creating pop art!

Aaron was the first to have girlfriends and was quite a flirt, enjoying the company of many girls through high school and college; Eric was introverted and lacked confidence. It took him five years to pluck up enough courage to pursue a girl he liked, but he admired her from afar, sending her secret letters and Valentine’s cards, simply because he was too shy to ask her out! Eric was always the quiet half of this pair of twins. We used to think of him as being quite unsociable.

I remember our visits to their home with our gang of friends; while Aaron entertained us with his daredevil rollerblade stunts, Eric mostly ignored us, preferring to turn up the volume of Metallica while he played computer games! Yes indeed, he was quite the loner while his brother was the daredevil.

Post graduation, Aaron moved out, travelled the world, got married and had two children. Eric continued living with his parents and is still not married. Both boys are doing well in their careers, but they continue to lead very different lives, living in different countries, mixing with different people and pursuing completely different interests.

How is it that two brothers who share the same genetic origins, same parents, same upbringing, same house and same birthdates turn out so differently? Why is it that so many accurate systems of fortune-telling fail to explain the subtle differences in the luck of twins?

1 THE SOUL AND ITS KARMA

Perhaps the explanation for the differences we see in Aaron and Eric is that the two brothers are two different souls. They are different souls, but both share strong affinity with their parents and with each other. Nevertheless, they are different individuals who come into the world with different past lives and past karma.

Buddhists and Hindus believe that a person’s future life is determined by his or her past karma, so it is definitely logical when we think of Aaron and Eric, that their present lives reflect their different past karmas. It is possible they have different purposes for existing in this life. The difference in their respective past karmas play out through their growing up years and continue to play out now – from their environmental karma as well as their individual karma, as you will see when we investigate the feng shui of the house in which they grew up.

For starters, Aaron has the karma to be born before Eric, and this is what created the big difference in so many aspects of their lives, starting from the moment they left their mother’s womb!

Let’s take a look.

twins-destinies-different-02.jpg

2 DESTINY READINGS REVEAL PATTERNS & STRENGTHS, NOT FATE

The reason why Astrology and Destiny readings cannot truly provide a complete picture of a person’s future is that it does not have a monopoly over your luck or your destiny. You also have the factor of choice. Each time you make a life-changing decision, the decision affects the outcome.

The Chinese explain that the components of luck in its entirety is divided into three inter-dependent parts – TIEN TI REN – Heaven, Earth and Mankind Luck. Heaven Luck is the luck you are born with and this is often read from destiny charts using your date/time of birth. Mankind luck refers to the luck you create for yourself with the decisions you make while Earth luck is the luck that your living environment brings to you, your upbringing and the feng shui of your living space.

Destiny analysis and astrology come under the umbrella of HEAVEN LUCK; such readings reveal the luck patterns in your birth charts, but they cannot reveal the exact circumstances or situations to how your good fortune or misfortunes will actually ripen.

Your destiny reading reveals the “hand of cards” you are dealt at birth. But how the game actually plays out and ends depends on how you play the game, which in turn is influenced by many other factors. It is what you actually do with the cards you are dealt that determine how you play and how you end.

For sure, Heaven Luck exercises a critical influence in destiny, but it does not have the final say on how life turns out from year to year. I call these the “destiny blindspots”; the loopholes whose detailing rarely shows up in destiny readings. Birth charts cannot reveal the way good fortune or misfortune ripens, and in the case of twins, their respective destinies are influenced by the other factors in their lives.

3 ENVIRONMENTAL KARMA & FENG SHUI OF THE HOUSE

twins-destinies-different-03.jpg Click to enlarge.

A big part of anyone’s future life is shaped by the circumstances surrounding our growing up years. In the case of Aaron and Eric, the feng shui of their family home played a big role in their subsequent luck. Aaron and Eric each held a different rankings in their family, and here is where they were each affected differently, feng shui wise by the layout of their parents home. Aaron was the eldest son, while Eric was the younger son!

In feng shui, each of the eight compass locations represents a different family member. We have previously highlighted the importance of maintaining the NORTHWEST (Patriarch) and SOUTHWEST (Matriarch) in good condition to benefit the father and mother. Here we highlight how other sectors of the house can affect the luck of other family members, depending on their position in the family.

A. The eldest son is ruled by the East

In this story of the twin brothers, Aaron enjoyed excellent luck while growing up because he was born first, and the luck of the house was very favourable for the Eldest Son. This was evident since childhood as his mother often told us Aaron was the “easier” child of the two – with no problems with feeding or falling asleep during nap times. He learnt to walk and speak faster than Eric, and would take the natural lead in all their childhood activities. Why did Aaron seem to do better than Eric? Simple. Because they lived in a house that faced EAST!

Being the first twin to leave his mother’s womb confirmed Aaron’s position in the family as the ELDEST SON. Under the Later Heaven Pa Kua, the luck of the Eldest Son is governed by the East location and is represented by the trigram CHEN, the “Arousing”. The East location is the natural abode of the Dragon, suggesting spring’s luxurious growth!

CHEN is an energetic trigram that embodies significant growth potential and its element is Big Wood. Here, Aaron had the good karma to live in a house that brought him a lot of good luck. Their entrance foyer in the East was decorated with a pair of guardian elephants and adorned with plenty of flowering plants. It was the main door used by all who lived there, activating Aaron’s luck right up till the day he moved out and got married!

B. The Youngest Son Is Ruled By The Northeast

Eric developed a very different personality because he was born later and hence became the second son, and since there were only two sons in the family, Eric became the YOUNGEST SON in feng shui ranking.

In the yang Pa Kua, the youngest son’s luck is influenced by the Trigram KEN, placed in the Northeast of the compass.

So you see, while CHEN in the East is energetic, ever-changing, full of growth and life, KEN in the Northeast is the Mountain – solid and still. KEN is mysterious, with the promise of secrets, wonder and gold! It is the trigram of the current period of 8, and it is this period that Youngest Sons thrive and maximize their luck (excellent news for Eric!)

While growing up however, Eric often complained that he felt “ignored” by his parents and everyone at school. Perhaps this was because his luck was missing from the house. Their house was a semi-detached duplex, designed with an L-shaped configuration leaving one sector outside the house where the car is parked. Their house had a missing Northeast on the ground floor, which tainted his luck to some degree. Thankfully on the second floor, the Northeast was partially occupied by the master bedroom where his parents stayed.

Note: Although Eric didn’t have the complete luck of the Northeast on his side, he still benefitted from the East house, because both Aaron and Eric were born in the year of the Rabbit. He might not have been as popular as Aaron, but Eric did well enough to make it to university. When they were at university, their parents renovated their house to regularize the shape, claiming back the Northeast as part of the house. This improved Eric’s luck and he is now enjoying a great career. He continues to live in the same house.

CONCLUSION

Although this case study highlights the case of twins, the same logic applies to other cases involving the luck of siblings of the same gender. In any household, different corners of the house represent different members of the family, and in carefully safeguarding the relevant corners, you will be safeguarding the well-being of each child in the family.

If you have a child who seems to be falling behind in his or her development, or experiencing significantly lower levels of luck, check the corner of the house that represents him/her. Correct the feng shui of this sector and it is sure to improve the luck of your child!

Garden with a Personality

garden-with-a-personality-01.jpg

Not everyone is given the gift of vision, where a simple thought can be translated into an idea, which can then be transformed into reality in our living environment. More often than not, we need to refer to visual aids and actual scenarios to see what works and what doesn’t. Once we have identified the feel and concept we have fallen in love with, the next step is to actually build it and this is where the confidence in making decisions comes in.

From selection of materials, layouts, movement flow to even the smallest details, we as designers have to make these daunting decisions. But take some comfort from the fact that there is never a right or wrong decision, but rather right or wrong paths. When we move down a road that your gut instinct knows is the wrong path, take a pause and see what doesn’t fit in the whole scenario, then either redo the whole thing or try a different technique.

Take for example the garden. Not the easiest of areas to dwell your designer fingers into, especially if you lack the green thumb, but this should not stop you from taking a plunge into the aesthetic world.

STEP 1 – Creating the Vision

So how do we create a vision? The easiest way is to tap your inner instincts or gut feel. Run through those design books and magazines, and feel from your heart what draws your eye or inspires you, rather than thinking of how to get around building it or what the costs would be. The construction and elements we put inside are the minor details, which should not be the cause to hamper your creative juices.

garden-with-a-personality-02.jpg

In this example, the idea of water and landscape comes to mind and the thrill of creating a stream in your backyard would be a luxury beyond any other. Look at the balance of soft flowing water with lush green grass textured with large stone boulders. Here, the key is the creation of a water path that offers a sense of tranquillity and peace.

However, a simple designed hammock can also add interest to your garden. Remember it is not how much we spend on our garden but what we place in it that creates the vision. In this case, the hammock reminds us of rest and sleep, and through this single item, it creates an aura of revitalization.

garden-with-a-personality-03.jpg

Not everyone has a garden fit for a king, but there are some key values to pick up from grandiose mansions that we may incorporate into our own homes. Look at this scene and identify the key design tips we can pick up here. First, look at the symmetry of the garden and at how each boulevard is focused towards a central element, which in this case is a water feature. The next is the balance of the garden and trees, which in an orderly fashion brings about a sense of calm and clarity in the thought process. And finally, the key theme to pick up from here is that no matter how big or small your garden, functionality always precedes form.

garden-with-a-personality-04.jpg

How so? The garden is set in an East-West axis, based on the sun shadows, thereby creating a North Sought Axis boulevard, which leads to the building behind. In doing so, it allows the building to sit facing the garden in the axis that requires the least possible heat gain from the morning and evening sun. Shadows are thrown in an orderly fashion up and down the boulevard to give directional focus to the garden, as the last thing we want are diagonal shadows throwing a disorderly blanket onto the garden experience.

STEP 2 – Adopting Design Techniques

Once we have figured out what kind of look we like, the next step is to identify different techniques that can be used to design the garden. In this pathway design, disregard the body of water, but rather focus on the path itself. By creating a break in material or design, it creates a visual stop-zone; so whether it is a stream or bed of flowers or sculpture, consider creating a break in the pathway to control our flow of travel.

garden-with-a-personality-05.jpg

How do we do this? Either you can incorporate a different pattern in the flooring as shown here, or play with materials such as a combination of gravel and grass, or even a change in colour of the pathway, to create a pause to designate a stop-zone. Remember that it is usually the simplest elements that can create the biggest effects.

garden-with-a-personality-06.jpg

Always design your garden with the idea of night and day. Every so often, we are led to believe that the garden is only appreciated during the day in the most pristine conditions, but dusk is usually the time the beauty of your landscape starts to come alive. As the warm colours of the setting sun starts to radiate through the skies, the use of lighting bollards throws a different kind of life energy into the garden space to create a mystical ambience in the home that we can view and experience.

Finally, think of the landscape as your palette where each scene is its own canvas. Here, look at ways to play with the perspectives of the space. Identify the key elements and think of how they can fit into your garden space. Break down each scene into its most basic values, which in this case would be the central water feature, set dead center within the space thereby signifying the goal or feature piece.

garden-with-a-personality-07.jpgOrganize timber pergolas to create a perspective focus on the space, first used as a roofing member, which is then reflected as a vertical member in the background, which acts as a backdrop to the water feature. This simple technique helps us link spaces on different planes together by introducing an element in the foreground that is also reflected in the background. By creating this visual link, it allows our experience of the space to be drawn to two different areas, which we can then appreciate as a whole rather than in segments.

When we start to look at how to design either our home or the surrounding landscape, first look at what intrigues our soul and what sparks excitement inside of us. Each of us has a different perception and appreciation for different scenarios, so it is important to know and describe what you like and why you like it. The next stage is to look at the tools of the trade and how these tools and techniques are used to heighten our experience further.

A Dozen Hot Tips To Feng Shui Your Workspace

People who work spend most of their waking hours at the office, so it is imperative to have a harmonious work environment. Functioning in a properly feng shui-ed office makes a world of difference to productivity and interpersonal relationships. It makes you enjoy coming to work. Harmony at the workplace diffuses bitchiness, reduces politicking and minimizes gossip – things that can cause much unhappiness. Good feng shui in your personal space helps you achieve recognition and promotion.

Given these benefits, can anyone afford NOT to ensure their workspace has been properly feng shui-ed?

dozen-tips-workspace.jpg

1. Watch Your Back

Anyone who wants to harm you will find it easier to stealthily creep up on you when you are not watching and hit you from behind. So it makes sense when feng shui repeatedly warns you to watch your back. Make sure you have good back support where you sit.

If you are in a desk job, ensure the back of your chair is placed so there is a solid wall behind you. Sitting with your back to the door is incredible bad news. But a window directly behind you can also be bad. Close such windows with heavy blinds and display support symbols of career success behind you.

dozen-tips-workspace-01.jpg

2. Avoid Sitting Facing A Wall

A desk that is placed facing a wall acts as a barrier to promotion. If you cannot move your desk, hang a picture of scenery featuring an open field to symbolize your own personal “bright hall”. Or hang on image of a phoenix on the wall in front of you to symbolize being faced with many opportunities. This will help counter the negative effects of facing a wall, and will create the cause for you to change desk to one with better feng shui.

3. Display A Rooster

The rooster is the best symbol to use to counter office politics. If you are constantly dodging underhanded tactics from co-workers, display a rooster with a prominent beak and comb to peck away at unwanted politicking. Another good symbol to use is the jade cicada, best worn as a bracelet.

4. Display A Crystal Sphere To Absorb Negative Chi

Nothing ensures harmony and more efficiently than crystal spheres. Place six in various sizes in the space you have consciously defined as your own. This will ensure your hours spent at work are pleasant and rewarding. Crystal spheres have great, active power in this period of 8.

5. Avoid Being In A Confrontational Setting Arrangement

Position your work desk so you are not directly facing anyone else. It is better to have your back to someone than to be positioned facing another person directly, because facing someone constantly will cause confrontational energies to build up between you and that person. Even if you work for someone and cannot change the layout of the entire office, try to ensure that at least your own desk is positioned to avoid this.

dozen-tips-workspace-02-193x300.png

6. Choose The Right Chair

The chair you sit in at work will have a bearing on how well you do in your career. Because you have to sit in it for long periods at a time, especially in a desk job, get a chair that is ergonomically designed to prevent back and neck strain. Herman Miller chairs are wonderful office chairs because they are specially designed to minimize aches and strains, allowing you to sit at length without getting tired or uncomfortable. Chairs meant for visitors on the other hand do not need to be overly comfy, lest they overstay their welcome! When picking sofa sets and settees for meeting areas, go with something not too comfy, for the same reasons. Harder sofa sets also generate a more dynamic type of chi energy more suited to the workplace.

7. Do Not Sit Too Near To The Door

Sitting too near the door, especially the front door in an open plan offi ce, is an unprotected and vulnerable location to occupy. If the office lay-out is such that someone has to be nearer the door than others, and that someone happens to be you, try to sit such that you avoid having your back to the door. Make sure you can see the door at all times, so you have a view of people approaching. Make doubly sure you have the necessary support symbols with you to counter the negative effects of such a desk location. At the next opportunity to move desk, do so!

8. Tidy Up The Clutter

A cluttered desk is the surest way to dull your efficiency. Make it a point each morning to spend just 10 minutes clearing your workspace. Do not let newspapers, books and stationery mess up your space. People who say they prefer an “organized mess” have not enjoyed the joys of a tidy desk and will marvel at how efficient they can become if they work in a less cluttered manner.

9. Beware Of Hidden Storage

While you tidy up your desk, it is easy to simply shove unwanted documents and papers untidily into drawers and cabinets where they cannot be seen. Although this improves the outward appearance of your desk, over time, this can build up into stagnant energy that harms your success at work unseen. Do not neglect your drawers and filing cabinets. Make it a point to every now and then go through and organize your drawers. Throw away what you don’t need.

10. Avoid Sharp Edges

Make sure you don’t have sharp edges that point directly towards where you sit. Sharp edges are poison arrows that send harmful shar chi or killing breath towards you. The killing energy sent your way will not just hamper your career success; it could also cause you to fall ill, get cheated or get blamed for everything.

dozen-tips-workspace-03.jpg

11. Work With Good Lighting

A well-designed office is one where lighting is well-designed. Natural lighting is best, so have as many windows as possible. However, half windows are better than full-length windows for areas where work desks are located. Full-length windows bring in too much yang energy, making it difficult to concentrate and creates a feeling of vulnerability. Basement offices with few or no windows are seldom auspicious. To supplement natural light, best is to use full spectrum lighting, which simulates natural daylight bringing better visibility, health and efficiency. Another way to characterize light is white versus yellow light. White light is better for offices, because the overly cosy ambience created by yellow light slows down productivity.

12. Sit Facing Your Sheng Chi

The best direction to ensure career and business success is to tap your Sheng Chi by sitting facing that direction. Find your sheng chi from your Kua number using the Eight Mansions formula. If you cannot tap your Sheng Chi, try and sit facing one of your other three auspicious directions. It is definitely a MUST to carry a handy compass at all times so when you attend meetings away from the comfort zone of your desk, you can make it a point to sit facing a good direction. This will give you an edge when you interact with people. Make this a life long habit.

How To Calculate Your Kua Number

KUA NUMBER     SHENG CHI DIRECTION
1     Southeast
2     Northeast
3     South
4     North
5 male     Northeast
5 female     Southwest
6     West
7     Northwest
8     Southwest
9     East

dozen-tips-workspace-04.pngFor Male

Take the last two digits of your year of birth and add them together. Keep adding till you get a single number. Deduct this from 10 if you were born before 2000, and from 9 for those born in the year 2000 or later. This gives your Kua number.

dozen-tips-workspace-05.pngFor Female

Take the last two digits of your year of birth and add them together. Keep adding till you get a single number. Add 5 to this number if you were born before 2000, add 6 for those born in the year 2000 or later. If the result is a two-digit number, keep adding till get a single number. This is your Kua number.

Using Large Mirrors to Make Unwanted Spaces Disappear

using-large-mirrors-01.jpg

In today’s case study, I want to share a potent little feng shui tip on how the use of mirrors can magically make undesirable spaces like a bathroom or kitchen simply disappear! Here’s a true story of how this couple used a mirror solution and got very good results very quickly!

Elena (one of our MPC Students from Portugal) and her fiancé Antony both live in a two-bedroom apartment in the heart of the city. The two had been dating for four years and Antony finally proposed and they got engaged! To save up for the wedding, Antony gave up his bachelor pad to move in with Elena.

But within a month of moving in, things started to go very badly for Antony. First, Antony lost his job due to a major company downsizing. Despite his impressive experience and glowing references from previous managers, he was not successful in any of the job interviews he attended.

Shortly after losing his job, Antony met with a motor accident that caused substantial damage to his car. Antony sustained leg injuries that required him to use a crutch while his leg healed in a cast. With mobility issues, Antony was unable to get around or interview for jobs. Being unemployed and without an income, he could not get his car repaired and their wedding plans got put on hold. With Antony being jobless, the couple began to fight about money, and shortly before Elena came to Malaysia for the MPC, Antony moved out of her apartment for a “trial separation”!

By the time Elena had finished telling me her story, she had broken down in sobs. After learning about the Pa Kua formula, she realized instantly what the problem was. Her apartment had a kitchen in the Northwest and this was causing serious problems for Antony!

using-large-mirrors-02.jpg Click to enlarge

The NW is the sector of the Patriarch, and when a kitchen is located in this sector, it creates a situation of danger known as “Fire at Heaven’s Gate”. Antony’s luck as the Patriarch was being destroyed by the fire! Not only this, Antony was born in the year of the Dog, and the NW corner was also his zodiac sector. So the kitchen here wasn’t only weakening his Patriarch luck, it was weakening all aspects of his personal luck as well!

When she showed me her floor plan, I told her not to worry. Because her kitchen was small and contained, it was really easy to conceal. Here’s what I advised her to do:

1 Install a large sliding door made with floor-to-ceiling mirrors right in front of the kitchenette (see plan). I asked her to keep the mirror as one large panel, rather than several small panels. In doing so, she would be able to slide the mirrored-door over to cover her kitchenette entirely. This was an excellent solution, because the mirrored sliding door not only had the benefit of “hiding” the kitchenette, it also created the effect of “doubling” the space of the dining area, which is very auspicious and brings abundance! I advised her to keep the sliding door shut as often as possible, and only to unslide the door when using her kitchenette!

2 The next thing to do was to activate Antony’s luck. This was easily done by hanging windchimes in the NW corner of the apartment to activate the luck of the Patriarch and to strengthen the luck of the Dog!

3 Then I advised her to hang a large photo of herself with Antony (looking happy) in a prominent part of living room and to use a red-coloured frame. This will bring them closer together.

using-large-mirrors-03.jpgElena did exactly as I advised. As soon as she returned home, she had a sliding door with mirrors installed. She hung three windchimes in the NW corner and ensured that her sliding door was drawn to cover her kitchenette at most times of the day.

A month later, Elena wrote back to inform me of the good news! As soon as her little renovation was completed, Antony moved back into her apartment and even found a new job! His new role not only paid him a better salary, it provided him with a company car while he saved up enough money to repair his car!

This is just one example of how large mirrors can alter a space dramatically. You can also use the same mirror concept to make a bathroom disappear, or to “double” a space to make up for a missing corner. But do be careful, as this should be done so that the mirror does not reflect the main door or the balcony door. Mirrors should also not be installed inside bedrooms, as this can cause relationships or marriages to break down due to third party interferences.

7 Tips on How to Feng Shui Your Bathrooms

spotlight-on-how-to-feng-shui-your-bathr

Usually, not much thought is given to toilets or bathrooms, especially when it comes to feng shui as they are thought of as “taboo” areas of the home. The more fuddy duddy variety of feng shui master would even go so far as to suggest to make them as small as possible, keep them out of sight, and away from the main house even. Today we have to adjust such feng shui recommendations for modern living, as most of us who like our mod cons don’t see our bathrooms and WCs as places where we flush down waste, but as personal sanctuaries where we retreat to relax. For some of us, the bathroom even rivals the position of favourite room of the house! So how do we reconcile the “taboo” vs “sanctuary” dilemma? Easy… just follow some simple rules.

1. AVOID LOCATING BATHROOM IN NW or SW sector

However nice you make your bathroom, it will still be considered taboo to some degree, so to be safe, keep them away from your two most important sectors: the Northwest and the Southwest. The NW represents the Patriarch and a toilet here flushes down his luck. Similarly with the SW for the Mother, as SW represents the Matriarch.

In feng shui, one always strives to preserve the luck of the Mother and Father, and the good fortune of the rest of the family will follow. As such, locate your WCs away from these two sectors. If you buy a ready built house with a bathroom in the NW or SW, and you cannot change the layout of rooms, then at least spend a bit of money to make sure the toilet bowl itself is not located in the NW or SW of the bathroom (Small Tai Chi).

bathroom-goldtap.jpg2. AVOID GOLDEN BATHS & TOILETS

A popular show of ostentatiousness (but mostly heard of only among the really nouveau rich) is to have golden gilded tap fittings, and even toilet bowls. This is not just vulgar, it is BAD feng shui! It doesn’t even have to be real gold for it to bring bad luck, because taps wash things away, and when you line your taps with gold, you symbolically flush or drain away your money luck every time you use your taps. Better to go for regular stainless steel taps, and regular materials like ceramic, plastic or Perspex toilet seats.

3. NO TOILETS ABOVE MAIN DOOR

A design that’s super popular with so many developers is to design a house layout plan where the master bathroom and toilet are directly above a main door. Don’t know how that became a norm with many of the housing developments, but this is a major taboo. What can be worse than having a toilet ruin the feng shui of an auspicious sector? To have the toilet above your most important sector of all – your main door sector!

So always check for this taboo before putting down your down-payment for your new dream house. If you already live in such a house and have been suffering a spate of bad luck after moving in, it is so worth your while to spend the money to make some changes – either to the location of your bathroom, or to your main door. Because this configuration doesn’t just bring bad luck, it can be dangerous.

4. MAKE SURE TOILETS DON’T SHARE WALLS WITH BEDS

When designing your bathroom, make sure your toilet does not share a wall with your bed. It’s OK to have the bedroom right next to the bathroom; that’s called en suite, and the more en suites you have, the higher the value of your house. But just make sure that something less inauspicious shares the other side of your bed wall. Like your mirror, or sink, or bath.

5. MAINTAIN CARPETS WELL IN YOUR BATHROOM

Using tiles for your bathroom is more practical and more low maintenance, but if you’re the type who likes to step out of a bath onto a plush carpeted finish, then make sure you spend some effort to maintain it well. Lay out an effective foot towel for when you step out of the bath so you don’t get your wall-to-wall carpet wet. If your permanent unmovable carpet is allowed to get damp and stay damp, it can create a subtle but foul smell that emits unhealthy chi. And if your carpet has become like that, the advice is to change your carpet. It will be money well spent.

6. BATH CAN BE BIG, TOILET SHOULD BE SMALL

The taboo associated with bathrooms is usually specifically confined to the toilet bowl, so if you have a beautiful big spa-like bathroom, it is OK. Just remember to keep the actual toilet small. It is better to confine the toilet in a small room within the bathroom. This way, the unpleasant smells from the WC don’t get a chance to waft out to the main area of your spa sanctuary.

Keep the door to your WC closed at all times when not in use. Another solution is to keep your toilet out of the bathroom altogether. This may be inconvenient, but it has been done before, and owners of such bathroom/WC arrangements assure us that it works. This way your WC doesn’t intrude into your bath sanctuary at all, leaving you able to enhance and decorate as much as you like without fear of “activating toilet feng shui”.

7. CHOOSE THE RIGHT COLOUR SCHEME

Don’t make your bathroom too yin. Bedrooms are good when slightly more yin than yang, as bedrooms are where you’re meant to rest and catch up on sleep. Bathrooms, although their meant for relaxing, are also where you scrub and cleanse yourself, so it should be a touch more yang than yin. So go for colours that are bright rather than dark. Whites, creams and pastels work a lot better for bathrooms then blacks, maroons and khakis. If you go for a dark colour, make sure the walls contrast nicely by painting them a complementary light colour. As long as you have balance, and the balance is tipped in favour of yang, you should achieve a good colour scheme.

10+ Tips to Feng Shui Your Dining Room

dining-aupiciously-01.jpg

The kua number of auspicious directions can be applied in the dining room to benefit all members of the family. Use a compass to check the direction that each place setting will be facing and then allocate that place to one member of the family.

There is greater flexibility of directions if you use an eight-sided Pa Kua table, but you can use any kind of dining table and round tables are said to be very auspicious. Square and rectangular tables are also acceptable from a feng shui viewpoint. But make sure that no one sits at the corners. Never eat with the corner pointed directly at your stomach as this is very inauspicious.

The Basic Rules of Dining Right

Choose your Nien Yen (love) direction as your dining direction. You do not need to use your wealth direction. When all the family are facing their wealth direction, the amount of aggressive yang energy generated can sometimes cause heated argument to arise over the dinner table. You should also not eat facing one of your four bad directions, especially your total loss direction. Doing so brings enormous bad luck indeed.

Tips for the Dining Room

  1. dining-aupiciously-02.jpgTry not to have a toilet opening off or sharing any wall of the dining room. If there is a toilet, keep the door closed all the time. The foul energy coming out from there is harmful.
  2. Have a wall mirror to reflect the food on the table as this doubles your good fortune.
  3. Do not eat directly under a toilet on the upper floor above your table. This is really bad luck!
  4. Do not eat in the basement or lowest part of your home.
  5. Have the dining room deeper into your home. If you eat too near the front door, your wealth tends to seep out.
  6. Make sure there is brightness and a good colour scheme in the room.
  7. Place the Fuk Luk Sau in the dining room. These Three Star Deities encompass all the aspirations of mankind and attract a great deal of good fortune.

dining-aupiciously-03.jpg

Designing a Feng Shui Dining Room

  1. Place the dining area at, or very near to, the center of the house, as this represents the heart of the home.
  2. The more spacious the dining room, the better the luck of the family will be.
  3. There should ideally be one solid wall in this room which should be behind where either the father or mother sits.
  4. Dining rooms that are part of the living area are excellent.
  5. Try and locate the dining room in an area of the home that has good Flying Star numbers.
  6. Kitchens placed next to the dining area should be level with or below the level of dining room. Never have the dining room in a “sunken” part of the home.
  7. Try not to have protruding corners or exposed overhead beams in the dining area. Being hit by poison arrives as you eat is the surest way of contracting serious illnesses.

The Effect of Poison Arrows in the Dining Room

The effects of poison arrows from different directions are as follows:

  • Southwest will cause womb and stomach problems such indigestion and miscarriage.
  • North affects your kidneys and ears.
  • East results in illness associated with the lungs and feet.
  • Northwest gives you headaches and severe migraine.
  • West causes lung problems and danger to the head.
  • Northeast causes back problems and vulnerability to accidents affecting the hands and fingers.
  • Southeast causes illness associated with the thighs, the buttocks and also cause you to be easily susceptible to the flu and colds.
  • South causes heart and eye problems.

Correcting Negative Chi in the Dining Room

  • Place a potted plant in front of the sharp edges of any protruding corner or column.
  • Move the dining table out from under exposed overhead beams.
  • Overcome the heavy energy from exposed overhead beams by placing a pair of bamboo flutes in the shape of an “A” over the edge of the beam.
  • Place curtains or blinds at windows to disguise ugly views.
  • Protect the dining area from excessive glare from the sun using curtains or blinds.

Maximizing House Luck Using Eight Mansions

eight mansionsThe Eight Mansions formula is not just a personalized formula but also reveals the luck distribution in any home. Every building can be categorized as one of the eight types of houses, based on its facing direction.

The Eight Mansions chart shows which sectors of the house enjoy the four types of good luck and four types of bad luck. Based on your house facing direction, you can identify the Eight Mansions chart that applies to your home. Select the correct chart and superimpose it on a floor plan to identify the good and bad luck sectors.

maximizing-house-luck-02.jpgTHE FOUR TYPES OF GOOD LUCK LUCK ARE:

  1. Sheng Chi: Prosperity, growth, expansion, success and wealth
  2. Nien Yen: Marriage, relationships, romance, love and family.
  3. Tien Yi: Good health, wellness and freedom from illness
  4. Fu Wei: Personal development and enhancement.

THE FOUR TYPES OF BAD LUCK ARE:

  1. Ho Hai: Mild bad luck, accident and similar events.
  2. Wu Kwei: People who wish to harm you.
  3. Lui Shar: Six types of bad luck.
  4. Chueh Ming: Total Loss and huge misfortune.

EXAMPLE: ANALYZING THE LUCK OF A SOUTH-FACING HOUSE

maximizing-house-luck-03.jpg

S – Sheng Chi brings everytype of success and is activated with water!.

SE – Romance luck flies into the Southeast. Here, the romance star is strong, so there is no need to do anything.

E – Personal growth luck, Wood chi, flies into the East, also wood. So here, Wood is strengthened. There is no need to anything, but do not have too much Wood here as this causes over-competiveness.

NE – Six Killings belongs to the Water element, and when it flies into the Northeast, it is pressed down by Earth energy. There is no need to do anything, as the Six Killings is naturally being kept under control.

N – The sitting palace (North) has good health luck. Here, Earth chi flies into Water, so good health luck is distracted. Fire energy will strengthen Earth, and will help to bring better health.

SW – Bad luck Ho Hai is Earth chi, and flying into the Southwest, its bad luck chi gets strengthened. So this house needs Metal energy here to exhaust the bad luck.

W – Chueh Ming, or Total Loss luck, is Metal chi, and flying into the West, which is also Metal, strengthens it. Water energy is needed here to exhaust the bad luck.

NW – Wu Kwei has Fire energy, and by flying into the Northwest, Metal, it gets strengthened. Five Ghost luck needs to be pressed down and exhausted; so place Earth energy, such as crystals, in this sector.

Being Clever About Money

clevermoney01.jpgHow do you make sure the money you earn does not disappear or get frittered away? How can you see your money grow steadily over the years, accumulating and expanding so you eventually experience a creation of real wealth instead of constantly having to make ends meet? Getting on top of your finances is not difficult but in addition to having good feng shui, you do need to follow smart advice, exercise discipline in the way you organize your cash flow and be alert to investing your surplus money. LILLIAN TOO suggests some ways to be smart with your money.

Begin your year with a firm resolution to focus unwaveringly on managing your money. Aspire to become rich and start taking control of your finances and do so in a conscious and serious manner. You need to have an attitude of respect towards money that is neither overly emotional nor excessively detached.

If you want to accumulate wealth, you must first establish the right attitude towards money! Understand that it is a tool and you are in control. You must never allow the management of money to overwhelm you. Let it be a natural part of your life, one of the skills you need to develop and absorb into your daily rituals of living so it becomes second nature to you.

Begin by getting a good idea of your current financial situation. Know the kind of budget you live under. Train your mind to think in a quantitative way, putting numbers to all your thoughts and ideas about everything to do with your money situation. You cannot be clever about money until you know the parameters of your financial situation.

Once you know what the overall position of your income and expense sides, you can start to think strategically about your money. This is the start of dreaming dreams and formulating strategies inside your head. Hazy goals eventually become clearer and this starts you on the road towards becoming financially savvy.

Start With Your Saving Potential
You begin by developing the saving habit. Amass some equity! The first goal is to endeavour never to be in the red in terms of cash management. Never allow yourself to run out of cash. Let this be the golden rule by which you live.

From here you will be in a comfortable position to make an estimate of how much you can save. Saving is a magic word in financial management and this requires you to quantify just two numbers; the first is your combined on-hand income; and the second is an accurate estimate of what you need to spend to adequately cover all the needs of your life. Do not forget to set aside a little something for special indulgences and little luxuries. When you undertake a disciplined assessment of your financial situation, you are much better equipped to know if your combined incomes (for couples) are adequate for the both of you. Put another way, it also shows if you are living beyond your means.

An Exercise In Budgeting
Budgeting is the first step in creating the habit of keeping track of your spending. This implies taking control of your money. You need to do this if you want to save and be able to invest. This is how wealth accumulation begins, by first creating some personal equity!

Next you need to extend your time horizon. Look beyond your current situation and see if you can work out how much money will be coming in and how much going out over an extended period of time, for instance 12 months. Include holidays and other anticipated expenditures. This is to see if your lifestyle is costing you in excess of what you earn.

Being clever about money requires you to think beyond conventional logic. If you find that you never seem to have enough money at the end of each month because the cost of living has overtaken your earnings, you should start shopping for more financially attractive deals on all your big expenditures.

Expanding Your Income Base
In addition to looking for opportunities to expand your income base, also shop around for better buys and bargain deals.  For instance, you can make it a habit to only shop for clothes and other luxuries during sales and to buy your necessities such as monthly groceries from warehouse outlets a little way out of town. You will be surprised how much you can “save” when you really put your mind to it. This does not mean you need to give up on things that make you happy; it means you start to shop smart.

To guard against impulse purchases, it is a good idea to pay cash for all major buys. We are usually more careful when we use real cash instead of plastic. Using the credit card especially when you own multiple credit cards makes it harder for you to keep track of your expenditures, so make the effort not to get addicted to your cards.

When You Have Surplus Money
If your income situation allows you to save, it means your financial position is healthy.

Once you have a little equity built up, start looking for ways to make your money work for you. Do not be satisfied with merely earning interest from the bank. There are ways of getting a higher return on your money and the way to find out how is to be on the lookout. Start by having a chat with your friendly banker about the different deposit plans they offer.

clevermoney02.jpgBuying Your First Property
Your first serious investment should be some kind of landed property. This is a really big deal because wealth creation in your life starts with accumulating assets and the first real asset in anyone’s life is the home they live in.

You will need to amass some equity to buy a house or apartment, at least enough to take advantage of easy house loans being offered by banks these days. If you have a steady job and you have at least a good thirty years more to your working life, you will find banks more than happy to offer you financing that will help you purchase your own home.

If you do not already own the home you are living in, you should definitely consider buying property to live in. Owner-occupied homes are easy to get financing for and in 2008 the earth element (which means property) represents wealth creation. So this is a good year to buy property.

Here’s a tip. Borrow as much of the cost of the house as you can, and go for the longest tenure. This way the equity you need as down payment will be less. I would say that it is not difficult to find banks willing to finance from 70 to 80 percent of house purchase price especially when they are in a “good” location. Remember to put top priority on location. Buy from reputable developers or if you are buying from an individual owner, make sure you invite your banker to give you an assessment of how much the bank values the property at. This is because the loan they will be willing to give you depends on their valuation of the property and not necessarily on the price you pay. As for tenure, it makes sense to stretch out the loan as much as you can so that monthly repayments are easier on you.

You will find that what you have to pay in renting living premises is lower than monthly mortgage payments, so make sure you do your sums to make sure you can afford the repayments. Owning your own house of course holds out the promise of long term capital gain. Your house is sure to worth more than what you pay for it if you think long term. As for the repayments, these become less painful as your earning capacity improves.

Trading Up
Owning your own home also allows you to trade up. Over time as your income improves and your family expands in size, you can use your house to help you trade up i.e. help you buy a bigger house. When property values rise, it usually goes beyond the ability of first time buyers. The only way to keep up with inflation is to have a landed asset, so make sure you have this most essential hedge against inflationary pressure.

If you are purchasing property for the first time, it is better to go for landed property and avoid condominiums. Apartments rarely match landed property when it comes to capital appreciation. It is also easier to sell, say a ten year old landed link house than a ten year old apartment.

Other Investments
As your financial situation improves and you start to think of other investments, be mindful of the issue of liquidity. Assets should be easily converted back to cash. In financial terms we describe this as the liquidity of your investment. As a small time investor, it is always good not to tie down your money unnecessarily. You must be
able to convert your investment back to hard cash with a single telephone call. It is for this reason that so many people “play the stock market”.

Playing the stock market requires luck as much as financial knowledge, and it is a whole different dimension to the management of your money. We will talk about this another time but for now focus attention on steadily improving your financial situation.

AUGUST 2019 FLYING STAR

In each of the 9 grids, you will find 2 numbers. The big number indicates the annual star and the small number indicates the monthly star. Use a reliable compass to determine your directions or locations.

7th Month of the Ji Hai Earth Boar Year
(8th August 2019 – 7th September 2019)
7
4

SOUTHEAST
Students and scholars residing in this part of the home benefit greatly from the energies here. There is however a clash of elements, which can cause frequent arguments between siblings. Pregnant women should avoid this sector. If you spend a lot of time here, you need to be more thorough with your work this month, as small mistakes could lead to big consequences. The chi energies here are better for the younger generation.

3
9

SOUTH
The South brings danger of robbery and money loss. Be sure all your doors are locked in this sector. If your bedroom is here, avoid taking investment risks and do not gamble this month! Display the Blue Elephant & Rhino with Talisman Feathers in the South to protect against burglaries. The energies of conflict could cause disharmony in the household, causing quarrels between family members. Keep this sector quiet. Avoid playing music or having excessive activity in this sector.

5
2

SOUTHWEST
The combination of stars here is rather unfortunate, causing problems and misfortune luck for females of the household. If your bedroom is located here, problems could arise at work in the form of financial disputes, illness or loss. To overcome the bad luck, display the Healing Herbs Wu Lou here. Avoid open fires or candles here, and don’t light this part of the house up too brightly this month. Best to keep activity in this sector to a minimum this month. A Five Element Pagoda here will help keep the Five Yellow energies under control.

6
3

EAST
Residents of this sector will be plagued by disagreements this month, which could lead to lawsuits or bureaucratic red tape. Display a pair of Red Fu Dogs here to counter the quarrelsome chi and to reduce obstacles to success. The #3 quarrelsome star here becomes very troublesome if there is a lot of noise – keep this sector quiet if possible. No stereos or playing of music in the East this month. Health-wise, this sector is highly unfavourable for men this month. Leg problems are indicated, so those residing in the East should stay away from games that are overly physical.

8
5

CENTER
The wu wang flies to the centre, bringing monetary problems and misfortune luck. This problematic star affects those living in open plan homes more severely. Display a 5 Element Pagoda in the center of the home this month to protect against serious money loss and reversals of fortune. Children and younger members of the family should avoid spending too much time in this sector this month. Avoid bright lights and too much noise here.

Those whose office or desk is located in the West sector should have a Double Humped Camel here to boost income and ensure your cash flow stays healthy.

Bad luck from last month dissipates and is replaced by prosperity chi, which brings wealth luck to occupants of this sector. All homes with entrances facing NE benefit this month. Activate the good luck here with a Bejewelled Pair of Carp. The sum-of-ten combination makes it easy to complete projects with success. Good fortune luck in investments is unfortunately marred by minor ailments, so take some extra care with your health. Display the Garuda Windchime with Stand or a White Tara Longevity Vase to control the illness energies in this sector.

4
1

NORTH
This sector brings good fortune luck to students and scholars – wonderful news if your study or work area is located here. Writers and those involved in communication make good headway this month. Much success indicated for those involved in literary ventures. Enhance with the Luo Han with Chi Lin. Those taking examinations will benefit greatly from the good chi in this sector. Occupants of this sector also enjoy wonderful romance luck. Display the Double Happiness with Peony or a pair of Love Birds. Avoid placing water in this sector this month, as it could lead to scandals.

9
6

NORTHWEST
Heaven luck blesses the NW; a great indication for Patriarchs and the heads of households. There is windfall luck to be tapped; display the Bamboo Forest of Prosperity to energise for wealth. Spending lots of time in this sector will activate the auspicious chi energies here. There could however be some conflict between the generations, leading to arguments between the young and the old. In-laws living together could also see an eruption of tempers. Display a cluster of Apples with Peace Symbol here to reconcile the elements and to restore harmony in the home.

Staying Safe Throughout Hungry Ghost Month

This year, the Hungry Ghost period starts from August 1st and ends August 29th in the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar. The actual day falls on 15th August 2019. In the month of hungry ghost, it is said that the yin overpowers the yang. The yin forces are thus very strong during this period. When yin chi dominates a house, it starts to attract ghosts and wandering spirits who thrive in such places. A house with too much yin energy starts to become dark and overshadow whatever sunlight that enters. Houses built over gravesites are also attractive places for ghosts to convene.

During the month of the hungry ghost, the Chinese believe it is important to be extra vigilant and careful, particularly during night time. This is the time of year when hungry ghosts and wandering spirits are released from “hell” to roam freely, making it a very dangerous month. The gates of the ghost realms are thrown open and souls of the dead will return to visit their living relatives, while the wandering spirits will roam about the streets.

To appease them, joss sticks and meals are left outside for the hungry ghosts and dead relatives to enjoy. Prayers and ritual prosperity items are offered to the deceased through the medium of fire, i.e. paper money, paper houses, paper transportation, paper accessories and joss sticks. This brings great relief to the spirits and affords them some material comforts when they return to hell at the end of the month. The Chinese believe that great merit and good fortune is attained by offering these poor hungry spirits some food and shelter during this time.

staying-safe-throughout-hungry-ghost-mon

Hungry ghosts can cause harm to those whose chi energy is depleted or low. To counter this one should wear amulets and ensure that there is an excess of yang energy. Wear bright colours and play music! This why Chinese Temples will put on feasts and opera shows to distract the wandering spirits and perform prayers for them.

WHAT TO AVOID:

  1. Avoid swimming during this 7th month. It is believed that evil spirits that previously drowned will look for souls to claim in exchange for a passage ticket to rebirth.
  2. Children and young adults are also advised to stay indoors after dark and avoid wandering alone at night. Children are particularly susceptible to spirit possession so it’s advisable to wear seed syllable amulets of protection like the syllable HUM or HRIH.
  3. Avoid moving houses or officiating new businesses this month. It is considered an inauspicious month for such activities.
  4. Avoid getting married this month. Weddings are vulnerable to attacks from jealous female spirits who may retaliate by casting curses and bad spells on the couple. AVOID at all costs!
  5. Do not go jungle trekking or camping as these are places where spirits love to go! Chances of injuries, spirit possession and death are high.
  6. Drive carefully to avoid accidents. Wandering spirits who died of accidents are on the prowl for new victims they can exchange for reincarnation.
  7. Protect your entrances with Chung Kwei or the White Umbrella Goddess. These are the best protectors against ghosts and evil spirits.
  8. When burning paper “hell money”, spirits will gather around you to receive the “money”. It is advisable not to jump or run around while doing this as you risk offending them. Aggravated spirits can become dangerous.
  9. Avoid placing your hands on your shoulder. Everyone is said to have three flames on the body; one on the forehead, two on the shoulders. Placing a hand on one’s shoulders is said to “put out” the flame, weakening your internal energies and increasing the chances of spirits possession.
  10. The forehead must be kept clean and free of head cover. If you cover your forehead, this puts out the flame weakens your life force, increasing the possibilities of being haunted.
  11. There is a belief that if you throw knives or scissors towards a thunderstorm, this can prevent spirits from entering your house.

APPEASING WITH INCENSE

The best method to stay protected is to wear the right amulets and appease these spirits with regular incense offering. Incense appeases the local spirits and hungry ghosts tremendously. Burn the incense pellets and leave your incense outside the house to complete burning.

incense-kit.jpgThe Incense Offering Ritual is a very POWERFUL way to remove obstacles caused by wandering and local spirits of the land. It is done about 2-3 times a week, but during the Hungry Ghost month, it is beneficial to do this every evening or as often as you can. The best time for this is around dusk, just after sunset. Light up sweet smelling incense (like kemenyen or sandalwood) and chant this special incense offering mantra as you walk clockwise around your rooms and outside your home while holding your incense burner:

NAMAH SARVA TATHAGATHA AVALOKITE OM SAMBHARA SAMBHARA HUNG

After completing the walk-about your home, dedicate all the incense and offerings to the holy beings, dakinis, angels, spiritual protectors, local landlords, and wandering spirits around you and request that they look after you instead of harm you. Let the incense burn till it has finished burning

SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH PROTECTIVE ENERGIES

When billions of wandering spirits roam the earth, the likelihood of accidents, mishaps and robberies increases exponentially. Thus the only way to prevent this from causing you problems is to rely on spiritual protection to avert negative vibes that shroud the earth this month.

This is easily achieved by displaying appropriate house amulets and images of powerful cosmic guardians near entrance areas. If possible, always wear some kind of cosmic protection on your body – i.e. especially amulets that are embellished with specific protective sigils or carry special mantras. Make sure that these the amulets touch your body, as this is what ensures your body does not get hurt.

1) DISPLAY THE WHITE UMBRELLA GODDESS in your HOME

White-Umbrella-Mirror.jpgThe White Umbrella Goddess is also known as Ushnisha Sitatapatra – the powerful goddess to completely annihilates spirit harm and black magic. She has a thousand arms that each carry a white parasol, to protect you against a thousand dangers caused by many classes of harmful spirit beings. You can invite her image that has been beautifully glorified on a plaque, or engraved on a mirror.

nighspot-keychain.jpg2) Carry the NIGHT SAFETY AMULET

This special amulet contains the powerful image of Lord Chung Kwai, the famous Chinese Ghost Catcher. It is believed that spirits shudder with fear and run for cover at the mention of his name or his image, and thus his painting is often displayed prominently near the entrance of businesses and wealthy mansions to protect against harm caused by bad spirits. He is particularly skilled at catching ghosts that bring BETRAYAL, ROBBERY and THEFT. Thus for this month, clip the Night Safety Amulet onto your handbag, or inside your car to guard against this type of spirit harm.

diamondcutter-pendant.jpg3) Wear the DIAMOND CUTTER SUTRA Prayer Wheel

This sparkling amulet prayer wheel contains eight complete sets of the powerful Diamond Cutter Sutra! It provides excellent protection against physical and spiritual harm. Twirl clockwise daily to benefit from the power of the Diamond Cutter Sutra. Wear it daily as a incredibly powerful amulet for protection against natural disasters, epidemics, physical dangers, spirit harm and untimely death.

protectionscarf.jpg4) PROTECTIVE SCARVES

An easy way to stay protected against mischievous spirits or bad feng shui is to out on sacred scarves that have been empowered with powerful protective mantras. The Dharmachakra Wheel Protrection Scarf has a special amulet that protects you from accidents and dangers caused by spirit harm and is particularly powerful for those who stay out late. If you are travelling, wear the Namgyalma Scarf or the Travel Scarf to ensure that you are protected while you are not within the confines of your own home.

Hungry Ghost Month and the Star of Yin Gate

The Hungry Ghost Month this year is starting from 1st of August until the 29th August 2019 so the Chinese believe many hungry ghosts wander around the human realm bringing accidents and misfortunes. This is a time when the Gates of Hell are wide open and spirits and ghosts from the Hell realms will roam freely on Earth to “seek food and entertainment” – all at the expense of humans. During the full moon of this month, 14th and 15th August 2019,  it is also customary to make offering to the wandering spirits and ancestors by burning joss paper, various paper merchandise, incense as well as various food offerings on the area just outside of their homes as an attempt to appease the spirits and discourage them from bringing problems. If you are walking around the neighbourhood, you should make sure that you do not accidentally kick or knock over any of the offerings made during the night of the full moon as doing so may bring the wrath of a wandering spirit on you.

ghost-busstop.jpg

There are a number of taboos practiced by different ethnic Chinese groups during this month long period, and we list here the main taboos to stay safe during this dark period.

The first one is to not stay out late at night (especially pregnant women and young children), not to go swimming in the sea or lake, not to wait alone under a tree or bus stop after sun down, and most importantly not to pick up any coins that you come across on the road.

If you hear someone call your name, do not turn your head around, but instead wait for the call to repeat, and on the 3rd time, stop and turn your whole body to see who is calling out to you, just in case it is a wandering spirit calling out to you. Of course this applies only after sun down and in the outdoors.

yingatestar.jpg

A little known fact from a Paht Chee perspective is the Star of Yin Gate. Print out your Paht Chee Chart and look for the animal in your Day pillar, then from the table, identify the animal that represents the Star of Yin Gate, then look at your Hour pillar, and if you have that corresponding animal, you possess this star.

tip2-pahtcheechart.jpg

If your chart indicates that you have this star then it is forbidden for you to attend funerals save that of close relatives. This is because the Star of Yin Gate means that it is very easy for you to offend the spirits of the recently deceased. The Chinese believe that there are two torches of fire on top of each your shoulders and these torches are meant to ward off spirits and spiritual influences. So when you have the Star of Yin Gate, it means that your fires are very dim to the point of almost going out, thus rendering you very vulnerable to spiritual attack. So if you have this star in your chart, you should wear or carry protective amulets such as Prayer Wheel Pendants, or the 10 hums brooch or keychain.

Easy Guide to Buying Homes with Good Feng Shui

easy-guide-to-buying-homes-with-good-fen

Buying your house can be one of the most important decisions you have to make. Not only does the home need to be large enough for your family, well located with the right kinds of amenities, it should also bring good luck to the whole family. Here are some easy-to-use pointers for selecting your new home.

You should either buy a brand new home or plan of doing major renovation to an old home, so that you and your family will move into a period of 8 home, which is full of new chi and good luck.

easy-guide-to-buying-homes-with-good-fenFirst of all, your new home must be regular in shape; either a square or rectangular. Irregular shaped homes often have missing corners, which lead to the family missing out on various kinds of luck. For example, homes that are missing the west corner will see the couple finding it difficult to conceive.

Next, you should take a drive around the housing estate and keep your eyes out for communication towers, water tanks, electrical power lines, cemeteries and so on. These are things that can potentially bring bad luck to the development as a whole.

Then take a look at the rooflines and design of the homes surrounding the property you are interested in. There shouldn’t be any poison arrows or light poles directly in front of or hitting at your main entrance.

If you and your family mainly belong to the East group of people, then choose homes that face North, South or East. Alternatively, if you and your family mainly belong to the West group, then choose homes that face Northwest, Southwest or Northeast.

The main door should always be built robustly to protect your family and home. It must also be big enough to bring in plenty of wealth and good luck. As you open your main door, it should open up into a large and welcoming landing and never a narrow corridor, as this will limit the amount of prosperity coming into the home.

Your main door must never be in directly line of sight of the kitchen and back door. Having such features in the home will cause unnecessary family expenditure and make the accumulation of wealth and assets difficult. Also, never hang mirrors directly in front of your main door, as this will push every visitor away and discourage friends or relatives from visiting.

Avoid homes that have the kitchen located in the Northwest as this afflicts the father as well as the ability to become a father. In the event you have already bought a home with the kitchen in the NW, at least make sure the stove is not in the NW of the kitchen, and if you can, move the whole kitchen entirely.

Bedrooms should be big and roomy and allow you to position the beds such that you and your family members can sleep facing your auspicious directions. Never position your bed headboards against walls with a toilet on the other side, as this is a sure way to spell trouble for the marriage and other relationships. You should also look at the ceiling of all the rooms. Make sure you will not be sleeping or sitting underneath a toilet drain pipe or support beam.

12 Easy Ways to Work with Mirrors

Mirrors have long been described as the cure-all for deflecting bad feng shui shooting at the home from the outside environment. For years, people used the Pa Kua circular mirror placed in the center of an eight sided symbol empowered by the yin arrangement of trigrams on eight sides of the mirror. This easy Mirror remedy has been associated with feng shui for many years, but I have discouraged its use.

The Pa Kua mirror is indeed powerful and does work pushing away bad vibes caused by secret poison arrows in the surrounding environment. But in reflecting away bad chi, the Pa Kua mirror is simultaneously pushing everything else away from your home. The power of this cure made strong by the yin arrangement of trigrams is quite indiscriminate, and as a result, good fortune and friends also get pushed away. There is thus a need to be skillful in one’s use of mirrors for feng shui purposes.

I have sometimes also seen the Pa Kua mirror hung up above doorways for no reason at all. This not only sends negative harmful chi to the neighbour opposite, they also harm the house that hangs it up, as it messes up the relationships of the residents with outsiders.

Thus I have been strongly discouraging people from using the Pa Kua mirror as a cure and instead to use something more benevolent. The Kalachakra Protection Plaque, with two very powerful mantras protects while sending blessings outwards and is a better approach to defensive feng shui. While making your feng shui good, it is equally important not to make other’s feng shui bad.

12-easy-ways-to-work-with-mirrors-01.jpg

1. Mirrors must never reflect toilet doors or sharp edges of corners. Inside shops, mirrors must double good fortune and never double anything negative. They should ideally reflect customers coming into the shop as this increases the yang chi that is vital for bringing in good fortune.

12-easy-ways-to-work-with-mirrors-02.jpg

2. Deep into the interior of the home, Mirrors work best in the living and dining areas. In these rooms, floor to ceiling mirrors are excellent for creating a visual expansion of space, which is always lucky, and even more so if the wall mirror also reflects pleasant views from outdoors – either a river, healthy growing plants or rolling hills – that suggest a vast expanse of pure energy. Views of trees bring in “growth energy” while views of scenic mountains bring great relationships. Views of water bring prosperity!

3. Mirrors are a very effective tool for doubling good feng shui in the workplace. They are particularly useful for retail establishments and restaurants that are dependent on walk-in customers for business. Having a floor-to-ceiling mirror near the front of the shop has the effect of “pulling” customers into the store and if the cash payment register is also reflected in the mirror, it symbolizes a doubling of business. This helps to literally “double” your sales. Shops presently suffering from the economic slowdown hitting the world might want to try using this to improve their sales revenue.

12-easy-ways-to-work-with-mirrors-03.jpg4. Mirrors should stay out of bedrooms. This is one of the most important taboos to take note of in interior feng shui. Old masters were steadfast in their advice to ban all reflective surfaces from the bedroom, as these often attracted third party interferences into the marital relationship and was deemed extremely harmful for the family. When mirrors reflect the sleeping couple during the nocturnal yin hours, there is also the danger of the “spirit” of the couple being robbed of their essence, their intrinsic chi. Hence the danger of mirrors here.

5. At home, mirrors in the foyer visually expand the internal bright hall making space for good fortune chi to settle, creating a feeling of space as soon as you enter the home. This attracts good strong energy into the home. Take care however that any mirror placed in the foyer does not directly reflect the main door. This means that you should not have a mirror facing the door. Any mirror placed in the foyer should be on one of the side walls. It does not need to be a floor to ceiling mirror.

12-easy-ways-to-work-with-mirrors-04.jpg6. Expand a narrow cramped space with a mirror. This is a feng shui solution to any space being excessively narrow or cramped. The visual effect of expanded space can be very beneficial. Try improving the energy of tight corners and narrow passageways this way.

7. Dining area mirrors enhance yang chi. A wall mirror here is especially beneficial when the family dines in frequently. Also each time you entertain at home, your mirror will be doubling the yang energy of the home. The effect is very subtle but also extremely beneficial.

8. Mirrors should never reflect bills, open fires or old newspapers. These are just a few examples of items that must never get “doubled”. Thus it is a good idea to keep mirrors out of your home office where all manner of invoices get placed on desks before they get paid. This doubling of bills creates the energy of high expenses. Similarly, mirrors are best kept out of the kitchen where reflecting the fire that cooks the food is NOT a good thing. And definitely, reflecting old piles of newspapers suggests a family constantly living in the past.

12-easy-ways-to-work-with-mirrors-05.jpg9. Never allow cracked mirrors in your home. This is one of the deadliest of interior décor ideas. Even mirror tiles are a bad idea, as this creates distorted reflections of residents inside the home. When you use mirrors, make very sure they are single piece mirrors.

10. Deep into the shop, mirrors create depth of energy. Here mirrors can reflect racks of products to double products being displayed. All retail shops benefit from the Mirror effect mounted deep inside the shop – from restaurants to supermarkets to specialized boutiques. If you visit some of the more successful establishments of Hong Kong, you will see that the retailers there are extremely creative in incorporating lucky mirrors into their décor.

11. Mirrors on ceilings can visually raise a low ceiling that makes you feel hemmed in. This is an effective cure when not used in the bedroom or over too large an area. But my advice is to go easy on the mirror reflecting you from above. In small doses they can work well, but when covered over too large a space, they can become a feng shui problem.

12-easy-ways-to-work-with-mirrors-06.jpg12. Mirrors in the dining area have the effect of doubling the food being served. This symbolically suggests a doubling of wealth for the family. But because of this, the mirror should not reflect garbage dumps or dirty drains from the outside. When the exterior view is inauspicious, it is better to create good interior feng shui by using curtains or blinds to shut out the outside world. If you live in an apartment, mirrors in the dining area can reflect in the wonderful blue skies, and this is auspicious.

A Sunshine Bath For Yang Energy

a-sunshine-bath-for-yang-energy.jpg

When you take a sunshine bath to replenish your yang essence, do choose a day when the weather is clear and bright. It is not good to do it on a day when it is raining or drizzling, snowing or dreary.

In general, it is good to do this ritual during the time of the Dragon, when you can tap into sunrise energy between 7am and 9am. However, you can also choose a time that harmonizes with your own Chinese Zodiac sign.

Time Animal Signs Sun Light
7am to 9am Dragon, Monkey, & Rat Sun rising
9am to 11am Snake, Rooster & Ox Sun shines a little brighter
11am to 1pm Horse, Dog & Tiger Sun has traveled higher up the horizon
1pm to 3pm Sheep, Boar & Rabbit Sun has traveled even higher up in the sky

How to take a Sunbath:

  1. Stand for about 3 minutes in your garden or on your balcony, simply soaking up the sunlight.
  2. Keep your facial expressions relaxed but be alert to your surroundings. This is an excellent time to tune in to signals from nature. Keep your eyes open.
  3. Read the signs. For example, if you see a bird singing, it is an excellent indication that some new opportunity or good news is winging its way to you.

Double Humped Camel for Business Success & Healthy Cash Flow (Red)

For anyone in business, the double-humped camel is an important symbol as it ensures you always maintain a healthy cash flow. A double-humped camel on your work desk ensures survival and longevity through good times and bad, allowing you to sustain difficulties with resilience and to always emerge unscathed.

Camels are well-known for their natural persistence and durability, able to go for days and even months with little sustenance, hence have always been a favourite with businessmen and entrepreneurs.

The red camel features the mystic knot, which carries the meaning of the infinity symbol tripled. To the Chinese, the mystic knot brings never-ending success and fulfillment in all areas of life. The cranes represent longevity of achievement, signifying the long life of the business and business owner. The sound for fish in Chinese, “Yu”, means abundance, so the double fish symbolizes abundance doubled. The butterflies represent transformation luck, allowing you to move in new directions with success. The Abacus is another symbol of profits and healthy cash flow, while the mandarin ducks ensure balance is maintained, so it is not all work and no play.

This elegant camel makes a great gift for any entrepreneur, business owner or corporate person handling money. Place on the work desk to represent big profits and continued business growth and success.

5 Elements Mirror Amulet (Pastel)

All the oldest Feng Shui masters sing the praise of the five elements. They say that whenever anything goes wrong in your life – such as declining incomes, or loss of one’s source of income bringing distress and despair into your life – simply displaying the 5 elements will go a long way to bringing back your good fortune.

Here we have made a very powerful Dakini amulet in five element colours both in light pastel shades and also in deeper primary colours that signify Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal – basically bringing you complete protection and good fortune wherever you go.

Note that the lighter shades are more yang, while the darker shades are more yin. Hang the primary colours in your home and the lighter colours in your handbag or inside your car. The five elements bring good fortune at all times.

Flying Star Updates for September 2019

wofs_flyingstar_september19.jpg

SEPTEMBER 2019 FLYING STAR

In each of the 9 grids, you will find 2 numbers. The big number indicates the annual star and the small number indicates the monthly star. Use a reliable compass to determine your directions or locations.

8th Month of the Ji Hai Earth Boar Year
(8th September 2019 – 7th October 2019)
7
3

SOUTHEAST
Quarrelsome energies permeate the SE, affecting all those living in homes whose front door is located in the SE. Also affects the oldest daughter of the family. Must appease the angry energies here and the best way is with a red carpet. The 4 Seasons Carpet with Mystic Knot or Mongoose will subdue the quarrelsome star while activating the auspicious Sum-of-Ten. Carry the Sum-of-Ten Amulet or display in the SE of your home or workplace. There is danger of injury to the neck; watch what you eat and avoid rough sports.

3
8

SOUTH
The South benefits from the Prosperity Star. Those living in this part of the home could experience a windfall of some kind! Boost wealth luck with the Wealth Bull and activate for windfall luck with the Red Treasure Chest. If looking for a promotion or needing to collect a debt owed to you, write what you wish for – including the amount – on a piece of paper, fold, and place inside the treasure chest. But beware – children may suffer injury to the eyes from the combination of stars and should be moved out of this sector this month if possible, if their bedrooms are located here.

5
1

SOUTHWEST
The Victory Star brings much promise to the SW this month! But the Water and Earth elements do not reconcile well and will need re-balancing. Boost winning luck with Three Victory Flags but do be more careful of injury caused by careless accidents, especially if your bedroom is in the SW, or if you spend a lot of time here. Display the Healing Herbs Wu Lou to remedy. There is also danger of sex-related illness and problems in love. Not a good month for occupants of the SW.

6
2

EAST
The East has the illness star, so those spending too much time here could start feeling under the weather. Place a Wu Lou to stop family members getting sick. You can also hang art with symbols of good health. While health luck may more poorly, the East this month brings career and speculative luck for those staying in this part of the home. Place a Lucky Money Frog on Water Lily Leaf here to boost money-making opportunities. Take advantage of the stars and make bold strides. Don’t be shy when it comes to displaying your strengths.

8
4

CENTER
The Peach Blossom Star enters the center grid, boosting relationships, especially those of a romantic nature! Singles looking to get hitched can do so this month! Place the Double Happiness Symbol here and keep this part of the home filled with sounds and activity. The #4 star also brings a lot of creative energy, making it easier to generate new ideas and to think up innovative new directions for those in a rut, or jaded from the same routine for too long. For wealth, display the Mirror Reflecting Superior Wealth. For exam success, nothing better than the Bejewelled Pair of Carp.

1
6

WEST
Such a lucky sector this month! The West sees the Victory Star combine with the Heaven Star, bringing new opportunities and new directions. Place the Windhorse Boosting Victory Flag here to give career luck a boost. The West this month is especially lucky for students and for young people. If still in school, spending more time in the West will help boost academic success. Display the Luo Han with Qi Lin to bring excellent scholastic attainments. Try to work in this part of the home more.

2
7

18 Omens of Good Fortune

Belief in lucky and unlucky omens has always been a universal part of our psyche. Like it or not, many of us believe in signs of good fortune and impending misfortune. The greatest leaders of the world believe in it, philosophers think seriously about it, while actresses, gamblers and celebrities are hopelessly obsessive about it. Ordinary people engage in rituals and wear an infinite variety of charms to attract good portents. We believe in lucky and unlucky days. We have our favourite good luck amulets.

Our belief in lucky and unlucky signs is almost subconscious, so much so that we constantly interpret the most commonplace things that happen to us as suggesting either good or bad luck. A broken mirror, inadvertently walking under a ladder, getting stung by a bee or dreaming of white tigers – each time something remotely out of the ordinary happen to us, instantly we wonder if it will bring us good or bad luck. Here are 18 common events in everyday life believed to be powerful indications of good fortune.

When Bats Nest In Your Home
18omens01.jpgThis is one of the most powerful indications that the family is about to become seriously wealthy. The Chinese regard bats as symbols of abundant wealth. The circular pattern of five bats is a very popular design feature found on furniture, paintings and ceramics. The Chinese believe that bats nest only in auspicious places – they have highly developed sensory parts that are able to “smell” out places with auspicious chi. The next time bats come and nest in the eaves of your home, rejoice because this heralds good fortune.

When Someone Gives You Money On A Lucky Day
18omens02.jpgIt is the surest sign that you will enjoy a significant increase in money luck. A lucky day is usually a new moon or full moon day. Or it can be a day of your animal sign. Check the Feng Shui Almanac for these lucky days. Make sure you keep the cash given to you on that day, as it is described as “good luck money”. Money can be given to you in many ways. It could be someone repaying a debt owed to you, or someone giving you an unexpected tip for some favour performed. This is the belief behind the tradition of giving lucky money on the fifteen days of the lunar New Year. These fifteen days of the year’s first moon are looked on as “days of miracles”, so money received on these days is always regarded as lucky money.

When Bird Droppings Land On Your Head
18omens03.jpgMany people believe this to be a major sign of wealth coming from heaven. Hence, although, it is really yucky and a major inconvenience, when something like this happens to you, take comfort in the fact that this is described as good luck being just around the corner! In fact, most things associated with birds tend to spell good fortune, such as when birds fly to your home and start making nests in and around your house. While bats bring abundance, birds bring good news and opportunities. The next time a flock of ravens, pigeons or magpies come to your home, feed them with bird seeds. Birds are also said to be powerful protectors and guardians. Even crows are said to be messengers of the Gods. So welcome birds with open arms.

Finding Your Initials On A Spiders Web
18omens04.jpgIs said to be an indication you will have good luck forever. All your plans will develop to fruition and whatever obstacles may be blocking your projects will be dissolved. Like the spider, you will attract food and money without even trying! This actually happens more commonly than you realize.

Meeting Up With A Snake
18omens05.jpgIs another sign of good fortune. Whether in your garden, inside the home, or out trekking, if you meet up with a snake, it means something or someone important is coming into your life. Never ever try to harm or kill a snake when confronted with one. The more poisonous the snake, the better is the good fortune. The king cobra is described as a snake of extreme good fortune. Whatever you do, never kill a snake as they are also associated with some spiritual presence. They usually slither away themselves when they sense human presence.

When Your Hands Tingle
18omens06.jpgIt is a sure sign that money is either coming to you or leaving you! The general consensus is that when it is your left hand that tingles, money is coming to you – the 4-digit kind or winning a lottery. When it is the right hand, it means money is leaving you. The same interpretation is also placed on hands that suddenly start to itch. If your left palm starts to itch, mercilessly rejoice. It means you are about to come into a windfall!

When You See A Shooting Star
18omens07.jpgAnd immediately make a wish, whatever you wish for will manifest within the next thirty days. If you are sick, you will get well; if your luck has been bad, it will take a turn for the better; and if you have just had a quarrel, you will make up. If you have lost something, you will regain it e.g. if you have just broken up with your boyfriend, you will make up with him or find a new boyfriend. Seeing a shooting star can be quite a common occurrence, so always have a wish handy. Close your eyes and wish fervently!

When Your Date Of Birth Adds Up To 8
(without any remainder) such as in 9/6/65 (9 + 6 + 65 = 80) you will be lucky all through the period of 8 which does not end until 4th February 2024. 8 is already a magically powerful number, so when one’s birth day adds up to 8, it is an indication of good luck. Those with kua 8 will also enjoy good fortune all through the period of 8.

When Your Ears Start To Itch
18omens09.jpgMany believe this means that someone is talking about you. If it is the left ear that itches, it means that whoever is talking about you is saying nice things, while if it is the right ear, then whoever is talking about you is saying uncomplimentary things. Next time your ear starts to itch, you know you are being talked or gossiped about. Some say, “right for spite, left for love.” Others reverse this omen. If you think of the person, friend or acquaintance who is likely to be talking of you and mention the name aloud, the tingling will cease if you guess correctly!

When A Butterfly Flies Into Your House
18omens10.jpgThis is commonly interpreted to mean that you are about to receive some important guests. If the butterfly has bright colours, it means the visitor will bring good news relating to your love life. If the butterfly is dark – almost black – the visitor is bringing you good news related to your career or business. Never chase a fluttering butterfly out of your house. They almost always bring good tidings. Do not try to catch it, as inadvertently killing a butterfly causes your good luck to change into bad luck.

When A Cat Comes Into Your House
18omens11.jpgIt usually means some kind of bad luck. Usually black cats signify treachery and betrayal, so it is better to chase them away. White cats signify death, but some say that golden cats signify good luck hidden in bad luck. In the old days cats were often associated with witchcraft and bad omens.

If You Put On Your Clothes The Wrong Way Round
18omens12.jpgThis is said to be a sign of extreme good fortune. It doesn’t count if you do this on purpose, but if for some reason you wear your clothes the wrong way round, it indicates that you will shortly receive some windfall or some very favourable news. This is a particularly good omen for those who have been suffering a spate of bad luck, as it suggests that your luck is about to change for the better.

Finding A Good Luck Symbol
18omens13.jpgSuch as an acorn, a four-leaf clover, a horseshoe, a coin all spell good luck of some kind coming your way. You should not throw away the lucky symbol, as signs of prosperity often possess some excellent energy. It is also believed that if you bury them in a metal box in your garden, the good luck multiplies.

Meeting Up With A Cow
18omens14.jpgIs said to be a most auspicious sign as the cow is a symbol of prosperity and fertility. Of course this is not something likely to happen in big cities except perhaps in India where the cow is so highly revered it is allowed to roam freely on roads and highways and motorists are required by law not to run them down. But if you do take a drive to the countryside one day and are confronted by a cow, rejoice, because it suggests great good fortune coming your way!

When A Dog Comes To Stay
18omens15.jpgWhen someone brings you a dog as a gift or if a stray puppy decides to adopt you, welcome him or her into your home. A dog entering your home is a very favourable sign, as it means you will have faithful and sincere friends come into your life, helping you overcome obstacles of all kinds. Black dogs bring wealth and protection. Golden dogs bring prosperity and happiness and white dogs bring love and romance.

When You Hang A Flag
You should make very sure that it is hung up securely and that even with the daily wind and sun causing it to flutter, it should not fall. When any flag you hang up falls from the staff, it implies danger is coming OR that your success takes a tumble. A flag coming down sometimes also means a car accident or some tragic accident. On the other hand, when the flag flies proudly and flutters in the wind, it brings plenty of good fortune. Usually flags flying indicate victory.

Garden Creatures That Bring Good Fortune
18omens17.jpgInclude insects and grasshoppers. If a grasshopper were to hop into your house, it means a very distinguished person is about to visit you. It can also mean that you are about to receive a great honour. Ladybirds suggest visitors, while frogs jumping into your home suggest money is coming to you.

When It Rains And The Sun Is Shining
18omens18.jpgThe simultaneous appearance of the sun and the rain is a very good sign indeed. This is when it is most likely for you to see rainbows in the sky. Indeed when the sun is shining brightly and there is also a shower of rain, it means that everything you are working on will be successful. You will receive the support of some very important people. If a son or daughter is born on such a day, it is a wonderful sign of a great life. If you happen to be getting married on such a day, you will enjoy a very auspicious life together.

Flying Star Updates for October 2019

wofs_flyingstar_october19.jpg

OCTOBER 2019 FLYING STAR

In each of the 9 grids, you will find 2 numbers. The big number indicates the annual star and the small number indicates the monthly star. Use a reliable compass to determine your directions or locations.

9th Month of the Ji Hai Earth Boar Year
(8th October2019 – 7th November 2019)
7
2

SOUTHEAST
The monthly illness star joins the annual #7 to bring danger of neck injuries if you reside here. Those with neck conditions should move out of your SE room for the month. Those with bedrooms here should display a Wu Lou beside by the bed and carry a 15 Hums Protection Wheel Brooch while on the move. Place the Blue Elephant & Rhino with Talisman Feathers and Anti-Robbery Amulet in the SE to protect against robbery. Young females working in the SE sector of the office face trouble related to workplace politics – display the Bejewelled Rooster on your desk to quell any trouble of this kind.

3
7

SOUTH
Those residing in the South need to be more careful as there is increased risk of money loss from the arrival of the Burglary Star. Keep the South quiet this month. Install a Water Feature here to exhaust the unfavourable Metal energies. Display Anti Burglary Mountain with Secret Mantras to mitigate risk of burglary. Good news however as the month #7 combines with the annual #3 to make the South more auspicious by forming the auspicious sum-of-ten. Those living in homes with main doors facing South can see their projects and endeavours approach successful completion. Place the Fu Dog Treasure Chest to activate.

5
9

SOUTHWEST
The Southwest is extremely unlucky this month! Those living in SW-facing houses need to be more careful. The Five Yellow gets enhanced by the visiting magnification star, causing all kinds of problems. Keep this sector as quiet as possible. The energies here could cause the females, especially the mothers, of households to be more irritable and short-tempered. They may come across unreasonable even. Cure this with a Tri-coloured 5 Element Pagoda. Do not leave candles or stoves unattended here, as there is also danger of fire.

6
1

EAST
There is good financial and career luck for residents of this sector. Promotions and recognition are forthcoming to those who seize them. An extremely lucky sector this month! Enhance the luck here with the Polaris Star Enhancer and Golden Dragon. The monthly #1 star brings victory energies assisting all those engaged in competitive pursuits; for this kind of luck, install the Five Elements Victory Banner. Keep this part of the home vibrant and alive this month – spend more time here or turn on some music in this part of the house.

8
3

CENTER
The center sector has the visiting Quarrelsome Star this month bringing disagreement and the stressful energies of gossip. This affects all households, so everyone has to watch themselves. The #3 star is often more perilous than the wu wang and other bad stars, as it causes irreparable damage to relationships. If you find temperatures rising in the home, calm these energies down by displaying a Red Apple with Peace Symbol here. You can also place a Red Carpet here and display a pair of Red Tzi Chi Kau here. Ensure there are no windchimes here this month.

1
5

WEST
The monthly wu wang flies into the West, bringing danger to those living in West-facing houses, and those in West located bedrooms. It also affects the Rooster-born adversely. All such individuals should lie low this month. Carry the Tri-coloured 5 Element Pagoda Hanging, wear the colour white to enhance Metal element energy, and avoid getting into fights or conflict situations. This is not a month to try to do too much. Chances of relationship problems if you try too hard. The frail or elderly should avoid sleeping in the West part of the home this month.

2
6

NORTHEAST
If your main door or bedroom is in this sector, you will receive unexpected windfalls and increased opportunities. Heaven shines upon residents of this sector. Enhance good fortune luck by placing the Treasure Vase in this part of your home or office. To keep the annual illness star under control, place a Healing Herbs Wu Lou next to your bed if your bedroom is located here, and hang an all-metal Parasol Dharmachakra Wheel 9 Rod Windchime in the Northeast to negate any negative energy created by the annual star.

4
8

NORTH
The Prosperity Star blesses the North, bringing wealth to all homes facing North or whose main door is located in the North. Also benefits Rat-born individuals. Place the Lucky Money Frog on Waterlily Leaf here to attract money luck, and the Lucky Tortoise to ensure your newfound wealth can grow. Also extremely auspicious for those whose living or dining area are located North – use this sector more regularly this month. Bring this area within the home to life with plenty of activity, sounds and lights.

9
4

NORTHWEST
A lucky time for those who spend a lot of time in the NW! The lucky #4 also brings luck to all Patriarchs and to the heads of households. The #4 combines with the #9 here to form an auspicious Ho Tu, which brings excellent business luck. Enhance for increased profits with the Double Humped Camel for Big Profit and Success. Also excellent is Vaisravana, the Guardian of the North, who attracts wealth and helps to amass one’s net worth. The NW is also extremely good for students this month! Those studying for exams will find it easy to work in this sector. Energies here bring better concentration and focus.

Lucky Colours for the Year of the Rat 2020

What Lucky Colours Should I Wear in 2020?

NEW YEAR COLOURS & SYMBOLS

lucky colors 2020

To greet in the New Year, there are several colours and symbols that simply MUST be brought into the home, as these are the decorative enhancers that will ensure everything auspicious comes to you.

Red lanterns are one most easily identifiable as auspicious symbols of the New Year. Here, their colour red resonates with everyone as it is universally acknowledged as the most auspicious colour of the New Year. Thus red is always the principle colour used in restaurants and temples and on clothes worn by everyone to reflect the good energy it represents. For good luck, everyone wears red, or at least try to, during the first day of the Lunar New Year festivities.

chrysanthemum flowerYellow Chrysanthemums bring increasing luck during the New Year. This is the time of year when the colour yellow – the kind almost bordering on gold – brings auspicious increasing prosperity luck. The flower itself is also auspicious as it is usually filled with an abundance of petals. If there is an altar in your home, placing these yellow blooms as offerings to your Gods and Buddhas through the fifteen days of the Lunar New Year is very auspicious.

Kam Kuat Orange Plants bring the symbol of gold into the home and in 2020, these bushy plants studded with bright juicy Kam Kuats ensure that wealth luck gets attracted into the home. Place a pair of these plants flanking your door inside or outside your home. The orange colour here can be closer to red or yellow, but both colours are considered to be auspicious, especially during the first 15 days of the New Year.

gold on red calligraphyGold on Red Calligraphy done on plaques or on rice paper art in auspicious rhyming couplets with master brush strokes are also very welcome during the New Year. The gold ink is considered very special as this signifies the colour of accumulated wealth. When the calligraphy has a red background, it is more auspicious. The use of auspicious words has been popular in China for centuries. They may remind readers of the strongly worded single word affirmations, which in recent years have become very popular as well.

To the Chinese, the word Double Happiness or Hei “喜喜” is considered very powerful for attracting good marriage luck, but it should always have red in the background to infuse it with the needed yang chi to activate its energy.

pink and white blossomPink and White Blossoms to indicate the coming of spring. This is one of the most important and colourful of auspicious symbols, as it has multi-layers of lucky meanings. They are known by the Chinese as the Three Friends of Winter – Plum, Pine and Bamboo; together, they symbolize steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. They continue to live through the cold winter months and as soon as spring comes, they send out glorious blooms that signifies the growth energy of the Springtime Wood element – all extremely auspicious as they welcome a bright new year filled with blossoming chi energy.

red packetsRed Packets filled with Money This is one of the most important rituals of the Lunar New Year. This is when money is placed inside an auspiciously designed red packet to be given to all children and unmarried relatives in the family who visit your home to wish you a prosperous new year. In the old days, it was deemed very auspicious for the recipient to receive a red money packet from the elder members of the family and from the boss, but it was considered equally auspicious for the older relative or boss when they give the red packet.

The amount placed inside the packet is not as important as the sentiments behind the giving. It is advisable to place an even-numbered amount inside the red packet and even more auspicious when meaningful words are printed in gold and the packet itself is a bright vermillion red. You can use any lucky symbol to decorate your lucky money packet, as long as the packet is red in colour.

Using any other colour is considered very unlucky, even when the year deems the other colour to be auspicious. Remember that during the Lunar New Year, use red as background colour and gold as secondary colour and you will have a fortunate year!

LUCKY COLOURS FOR 2020

The Chinese believe that colours resonate with particular frequencies that have different strengths and affinities from year to year. In Chinese metaphysics, there are five main colours which signify the five elements, the five planets and the five directions – North, South, East, West and Center. Different homes have different colour affinities, and different personalities vibrate better with certain colours in different years. This dynamic aspect of the use of colours to ensure good fortune is a fascinating study in itself, but for the purposes of the TUNG SING, what is needed is a basic knowledge of colour affinities plus their resonance in the Year of the Metal Rat 2020.

For 2020, the colour green is very auspicious, as this symbolizes the colour that strengthens the WINDHORSE of the year, thereby bringing strong success luck. For almost all the animal signs, the colour green will be very auspicious in 2020.

Note that the colour green signifies the season of spring and it stands for steady and healthy growth chi energy. This is very important, as the year of 2020 starts before the beginning of LAP CHUN, the first day of spring. Green is the colour of Wood and because Wood is the element of resource in 2020, green is also the colour of success. If you are unwell, sit by a window overlooking fields of green. There is nothing more therapeutic than this. Green also signifies action and wearing green makes one feel energized and action-oriented.

The lucky gemstone associated with green is the FEI CUI GREEN JADE, probably the most expensive of this beautiful translucent stone so loved by the Chinese. Green Jade brings great good fortune to those who wear it close to their bodies, especially when worn as hand bangles near the pulse point at the hand.

Do note that because green is so auspicious in 2020, it is extremely beneficial to wear jade in 2020.

The colour RED

For 2020, the colour red is lucky as it brings friendship and networking luck; and is neither a colour that is in excess nor is the year short of Fire. Note that red is the colour associated with the planet MARS.

While the colour red is universally acknowledged as a very important and auspicious colour, it is important not to overuse this colour. Thus while wearing red is very lucky indeed, painting the whole house red is quite another matter. When Fire energy becomes excessive, it can turn destructive.

Red is always favoured for the New Year, for weddings and for the celebration of happiness events such as the month-old celebration of a new-born baby and birthdays for patriarchs and matriarchs. During such events, the yang chi of the colour red gets activated, attracting good fortune!

Red is also the favourite colour of temples and restaurants, as it is believed to be the most powerful colour for attracting customers and clients. Again, one should not overdo the use of red even in these public places.

The colour YELLOW

yellow emperorIn 2020, the colour yellow represents intelligence and creativity. This is the colour of Earth which brings stability and patience; and makes one grounded and realistic. Because Earth is in excess this year, too much of this colour will cause excessive worrying and self-induced stress.

Yellow has always been a noble and high-class colour associated with the mandarins at court. The Chinese have always revered this colour, associating it with Imperial Authority, yellow being the colour of the Son of Heaven. Yellow is also the Emperor’s colour. It is also the colour of the Yellow River, which brings the much-needed water to the fields of rice and grain, and it is also the colour of the great nation China itself.

The colour WHITE

gold barWhite is the colour associated with the element Metal, which in 2020 is the element that signifies Wealth and Financial success. The other colours associated with the Metal element are silvery grey and gold. Both of these metallic colours represent money, so they are always regarded as auspicious. The metal planet is Venus.

The colour BLUE or BLACK

Both colours blue as well as black signify flowing water, which brings change and swift communication. The flow of news moves as fast as the waters that flow down the great rivers of the world. Wearing black or blue in 2020 strengthens recognition and promotion luck!

Black is not the evil colour many suppose it to be. It is also not a mourning colour. Nevertheless, it is not favoured during festivities and celebration occasions. Do avoid wearing black to someone’s wedding or birthday dinner, as it is simply not a nice thing to do. This is not because black brings bad luck. It is because the colour black is associated with the dark wandering spirits of the night.

When you enter a celebration occasion in black, the fear is that the wandering spirits are able to merge with you and enter to spoil the occasion. In Chinese, we call this causing the colour black to clash with someone in the dinner whose Spirit Essence is low. This can be the host or the host’s parents.

Blue is less of a danger, although many Chinese associate this colour with losing, and failure. Light blue however does not have the same connotations as black or a darker blue. If you need to enhance the Water element therefore, and need to wear blue, it is a good idea to wear lighter shades such as sky blue or the colour of aquamarine.

TWO COLOUR COMBINATIONS

There are several dimensions to the effect which colour combinations have on one’s luck. The first has to do with the combination of planetary forces, while the second has to do with the combination of elements. In many instances, two colours tend to make a stronger statement and have a stronger good luck effect than just wearing either separately as a single colour.

The LUCKY COMBINATIONS

GREEN & BLACK is a very lucky combination, as black Water replenishes the fast-growing green Wood. Here, the Wood of our earth is being nourished, causing it to generate great good fortune and life-giving energies. This combination is always auspicious. The meaning generated here is one of good health and continuous victory.

This is an excellent combination for 2020. You can use it for your corporate logo, your posters and your calling cards, as the hidden message of this combination is excellent.

GREEN & RED is likewise a favourable combination, as the hidden meaning generated with these two colours side by side is indicative of having ample resources to fuel your wishes and improves success. Here, the green of Wood is being used in a clever way, but it is the bright brilliance of the Fire element that will bring success luck. In 2020, this is a good combination that brings mentors and helpful people.

RED & YELLOW is a stable combination that brings good activity, favourable results and harmonious effects. Anyone wishing to work as a team and to foster goodwill between team players will benefit from this combination. So if you are looking for a good colour scheme for your sports team, this can be a winning combination.

YELLOW & WHITE is an excellent colour combination. This denotes the creation of wealth, the successful transformation of resources into a sustainable business and the making of good profits. But this is not favoured for flags and corporate logos, as here, the elements indicated are Earth producing Metal. These are elements best used in a grounding capacity. Thus they are great for house or office décor colours e.g. the combination of white walls with yellow highlights or light cream yellow walls with metal of any kind.

BLACK & WHITE is a good productive-type combination. Here, the Water element of black, which signifies wealth luck, is produced by the Metal white, which also signifies the creation of sustainable prosperity. This is thus a wealth-creating combination. It is excellent for sports teams and corporate logos. Black and white also signifies the unity of yin and yang.

YELLOW, WHITE & BLUE brings wealth. This is an excellent combination for those doing business or commerce. You can use gold instead of yellow, and black instead of blue, to achieve the same effect. The elements at work here are Earth producing Metal producing Water. Very auspicious.

RED, YELLOW & WHITE creates harmony and peace. The elements here are Fire producing Earth producing Metal, so ultimately, this is combination of three colours that also brings wealth. More importantly, it brings stability and harmony.

BLUE, GREEN & RED brings success, fame and recognition. This is an excellent combination for those wanting to climb the career ladder, as it is a success-bringing combination of colours. Here, the elements are Water producing Wood producing Fire. You can substitute black for blue, and brown for green as well.

The UNLUCKY COMBINATIONS

GREEN & YELLOW connects Wood with Earth element, which is a single-sided combination. Here the dominant colour is green, which soaks up everything the Earth element of yellow has to offer. The green colour in this combination causes yellow to lose its lustre and brilliance, causing the light to get dimmed and resources to be reduced.

This is not a good colour combination when two separate colours green and yellow are placed next to each other. But when the colours are mingled and mixed to create a lighter less green shade of green, the effect is neutral and may even be lucky.

WHITE & GREEN is definitely not lucky. Here the elements are clashing in a destructive way, with growth energy halted. The combination thus brings disaster and even violence. Metal destroys the energy of Wood and can also decrease immunity to illness. Only in exceptional cases would such a combination be beneficial, but that too only intermittently. It is safer to avoid it. If you want to use this combination, it is advisable to increase the green and reduce the white.

RED & WHITE is likewise a combination that denotes war, as the Fire of red devours the Metal of white. This combination is not recommended unless the white is so prominent as to render the red harmless.

BLACK & RED signifies the presence of Fire and Water, two opposing elements with black destroying red. This makes this combination potentially dangerous to the power of red, and in fact, the two elements represented become aggressive when paired together. Better to avoid this combination as it only brings discord and problems even though it may initially bring good results. Ultimately, this combination does not lead to sustainable good fortune.

A relation of the red/black combination is the red/blue combination which when mixed, creates the colour purple. This is a special colour which has a special meaning to the Chinese, as purple is the ultimate colour of perfection. It is also the colour of heaven, and when combined with yellow, becomes a combination denoting the harmonious and very auspicious union of heaven and earth.

YELLOW & BLACK represent the elements of Earth with Water – a destructive combination. The insects and animal worlds are full of poisonous examples of this combination and they signify danger to humans. Stinging insects and bees, tigers and other reptiles carry this colour combination. The yellow and black combination can also be seen on many road signs as warning signs of danger. But as a protective colour scheme, this is an excellent combination, as it creates a natural shield against those who would do you harm. Hence the popularity of Tiger amulets!

Create the CHI of WEALTH

o much of successful feng shui practice comes from cleverly harnessing the powerful chi of SYMBOLS that if you travel the length and breadth of China today, everywhere you will see evidence of this Symbolism. From Guanzhou to Shanghai and Beijing, feng shui symbolism confronts the visitor as soon as you arrive – in the shops, inside and outside airport terminals, at railway stations and along the roads and squares of the city. In the past 20 years, China has re-embraced feng shui and prospered!!! Everywhere you can see Symbolism at work. And probably the most powerful symbols are those that signify and attract wealth in abundance. YOU CAN DO IT TOO… by placing symbols of wealth around your home

The most powerful of wealth symbols has always been in GOLD – and today GOLD PRICE has reached dizzying heights. But the appearance and symbol of gold is as powerful as the real thing and these can take the form of old Chinese gold ingots, gold coins and in recent times, also the westernized modern symbols…

1  You can fill a bowl with GOLD and place on your coffee table.

2  OR create a Ship of Wealth bringing you a cargo of gold bullion into your home. Select a ship with sails that catch the WIND and sail along strong SEAS .. The Sailing Ship is the best symbol of wealth bringing feng shui for it brings wealth and treasures brought by the winds and the waters .. and feng shui is of course exactly that Wind & Water !!   show a couple of ships laden with gold.

3  OR create a big Basket of Prosperity placed deep inside the home. Any kind of container can be used, but the best are the bejeweled containers or jewellery containers – instead of putting just jewellery in your Jewel Boxes, place also a stack of gold coins and ingots… these signify growth in ASSET WEALTH and are excellent for those who play the stock market or who take big risks with their money.

4 OR the best tip of all, tie 3 coins together with red string – as many groups of 3-coins as you need to be placed under your floor before tiling. Let your house sit on a “fortune in gold”! This tip is for those currently building or renovating a home.

Do not make rash decisions as these may lead to serious disagreements. Protect against negative energies with the Fire Dragon with Fireball in the NW, or in front of you on your desk. Carry the Dragon Holding Fireball Anti-Conflict Amulet at all times. If you need to attend important meetings, wear something in the colour red.
