When I become MP, my first law is to peg the price of log cake below 5sgd with size, taste and quality.

Ts is commendable to buy a cheaper one and decorated it himself anyway .

Hehe, I just collected a log cake I ordered, no I didn't pay 40$ for 1kg, mind u, I got it at a good discount, so yes, brains trumps brawn, I bought it from Qoo10 n it's delicious, no need to get from branded outlets(u know which ones), actually y do parties insist on log cakes? A yummy cake is a yummy cake, I bought a round cake last year, no complaints, of cos it helps when it's someone birthday that day hehe, I believe order a cake from NTUC won't be ex right? If still beyond that guys budget, then buy a round cake that has a Christmas theme, of cos round cakes could be more ex than log cakes. No cakes, ppl can buy ham or pies instead, dun worry , dun stress, ok?

I was at giant few weeks back in early Dec late nov period ..looking for Christmas decor for students like snow globes..cost 3.90 etc.

Thinking its too exp I went over to daiso to buy some other Christmas decor..

Just last Friday I went back to giant to check out the prices of Christmas decor and the snow globes..wow price slashed to 1.90 and now some Christmas hanging decors are priced at 75 percent discount!

Felt happy at last not that I can't afford just not  willing to pay esp when they are trying to hike up the prices during festive periods. Another place to look out for such stuff at the verge tekka mall.)

cheers blessed Christmas peace to all )

Isn't it just Economics 101.

I really dislike whiners complaining about prices of festive items incessantly.

If you need to decorate your office with Christmas decorations, why patronise those TRIM shops when Daiso offers similar goods at $2 a piece.  The same goes with other festive items.. always look for cheap alternatives..Remember regardless of your "willingness" to pay for the more expensive items, Christmas comes once a year. Just soak in the atmosphere.

Hi all,

It's Christmas and let us have some Holiday cheers.

There is absolutely no need to vent your anger (towards me) cos I'm reiterating that I will not react to Guest/Anonymous postings.

Isn't it paradoxical that rules are meant to be broken... but there are still rules to abide to.  Regardless whether we want or we can defy them, their existence is here to stay.  Rather than whining and scorning over tiny bits of irrelevant details, why not channel positive energy towards others and yourself.  One cannot continue to be dissatisfied with life, sulking is NOT the only way to live.  Changes are good but why not stick to older traditions when changes would mean a new world order... I am invited to a christmas party and I am tasked to buy log cake.

I was shocked at the prices of these logcakes! Breadtalk was selling it at $58! Even those no brand hdb cakeshops are selling logcakes at $38!

What made me angry is these shops are profiteering on this festive season! Logcakes are just swiss rolls with cream! Swissrolls cost just $5.00. Why is there so much mark up?

What i did was i bought a $5 swiss roll and betty croaker butter cream and decorate the cake myself! Cost less than $15.

Should government agencies check for such rip offs from retailers who cares for their fat paychecks instead of spreading joy and happiness? Where is the social responsibilities?

I hope the government will stamp out such acts and put a stop to such practices.

- how about bak kwa?

- how about the rising cost of wedding ang bao?

- how about the rising cost of my kopi-c siew dai in Ya Kun?

- how about the expensive holiday packages during... well... holiday seasons?

- how about the inflated bak zhang price during 端午节?

- how about crazily priced moon cakes during mid-autumn?

so, given your post, the government will have to check the "rip-offs" because of supply and demand? because of inflation? really?

like many mentioned, if the price is out of your budget, don't buy. hands-on if possible. find alternatives. isn't that the way to life?

so, should we be expecting a similar post in CNY when u whine about bak kwa, pineapple tarts and kueh lapis?

I'm rich. I don't care how much a log cake would cost this year. As long as it smells and tastes good, I will buy it.

my advice to those who are ranting here, don't buy anything that you can't afford.

Strive hard to be rich. If you are poor and not successful in life when you reach 30, it is your fault. That means you are a lazy person who didn't do much to make your life easier.

Success is so narrowly defined by you.  Singapore has been screwed for 50 years with such deluded mentality.  I rather eat healthily during this christmas than to splurge and plunge into expensive unhealthy food just to show off.

Typo was slashing their prices for Xmas decors too.

But bear in mind different outlets slash at different rates.

For example, their mini Xmas tree and Xmas baubles were going at 3 for $20 in Tampines, but they were sold at $5 each at Ang Mo Kio and $2-$3 at Somerset!

Well if you serious about having log cakes for your Christmas party, you may want to do this.. I have done 2 such logs under $!0.

Buy 2 rolls of inexpensive Swiss Roll (supermarket quality suffices).   Pour melted chocolates (mixed with vanilla essence and butter)  in a pan and cooled the mixture in the fridge to make a choc fudge.   This process should take an hour or so but remember to stir the mixture every now and then to avoid "caking".

Spread the fudge generously on the external surface of the Swiss Roll and to add that Christmasy feeling, dust icing sugar sparing after you use a fork to create the bark-effect on the fudge.  Lastly, the final touches - add figurines or what-so-ever you find in Daiso to match those expensive looking ones in the shops.

A cake is still a cake, whether it is log, round or square.   Why must eat cake on christmas?  For the same price, I would rather eat sushi.

It is the advert of Western culture and marketing by capitalists in general that is making the society we live in expensive n complicated.

E.g. expensive condos, cars, exotic holidays, designer wear, presents, gourmet food, iphoneX etc. Then there is social media to worsen it by encouraging ppl to flaunt what they own.

A wallet is a good wallet if it serves its function. No need for it to be LV or CL.

That said, choices are always yours to make, to choose to buy a $50 log cake, or not have log cake at all or have some cheaper alternatives.

Very difficult to roll up a sponge without splitting it though. Quite apart from the rolling technique, the sponge must be a little more moist than usual layered cakes.

Actually why do you need a log cake? You should juz bake a normal cake and decorate it to look like a log cake. No one'll know the difference ;)
