Freestyle needs some practising 
When I first started learning freestyle also encountered that issue

Same here.

I cnt flip left n right balancely so smtims shift to breathstroke halfway. Where do you swim usually?

Keep practising I guess.. so you can time when to take a breath when you rotate ur head 

Make sure to breathe only from your mouth and only to take a breath when your mouth is above the water surface 
You can practise at the side of the pool first, just the rotation of the head and breathing and go slow 

I haven't gone swimming for a while now, but usually at Jurong SAFRA

I find it relatively hard to learn butterfly without people coaching.

I swim watching someone who I think swims well and mimicking that form/technique. Sounds like a creep but it helps. If that gives an idea, but must know how to keep afloat at least.

The school that sman recommended fishlike.net has classes and coaches. Bit on the steep end in terms of price. For the level 1 course its close to 500SGD for 4 lessons. They cover more on open water swimming so if you are looking at ows with some spare cash can give it a shot.
