I haven't quite found "the one," but I have been looking and would like to share some thoughts on this. Firstly, we forget how small this community is, and hence how challenging the odds are. Assuming 5% of the male population are gay, and a typical cohort size of say 40,000-50,000 Singaporeans born each year, we are talking about 1,000 - 1,250 gay men of the same age. That's smaller than a secondary school. Compare that to a straight male who has access to a theoretical pool of about 18,000 women. Hence, it is no wonder that larger age differences are more common among gay relationships: your chances of success are better if you expand your target pool by age (or nationality for that matter). Against that, we like to further select our partners on other criteria such as looks, sexual compatibility, lifestyle, race, etc. Every time a new requirement is added, the odds of finding "the one" decreases. I am not suggesting that people settle for less than what they desire. But given the odds, it does mean that if you are really looking for "the one," you need to work hard at it. Go out and meet more people, reply to messages, take the initiative to meet guys for coffee. Even if some chap may not be the perfect guy at first glance, give it a chance. The more chances you give yourself, the more likely you will find a man that you share some personal chemistry with and would like to spend the rest of your life with.

I had never been able to swim and water scared me. I still remember vividly back when there was a compulsory 'Learn to Swim' programme for non-swimmers in Sec 1 and I was one of them. While I attended a few sessions, I also played truant when I found the chance to, so much so that I would wash my dry trunks when I got home, pretending that I had gone for it. Well, years passed and in JC, swimming was part of the PE curriculum (since there was a swimming complex in my sch) and the phobia returned to haunt me, though I had more fun learning how to swim this time (but still couldn't master any stroke). During NS, I was in the non-swimmer group and even before ORD, I couldn't swim a full length. Ironically, it was after ORD when a few of us army buddies met and made swimming our Sunday activity. Slowly with the "kick, glide, pull" (can still recall my PTI's instruction for breaststroke), swimming for me became a breeze. Too bad my Sunday swimming ended too quickly due to study and work commitments, but now I make it a point to swim whenever the weather and my schedule permit. Now I go for the continuous lap section at the pools to build up my stamina. So far so good! Of cuz, the eye candy at the pool helps to distract me if I ever think of taking a rest.
