I notice not many people wear sunglasses in Singapore.

As Singapore is near the equator, I presume the UV rays and sun is stronger than countries further away from it. The more we should wear one. Don't you think so?

Which brand do you recommend?

Where can I buy cheap and good ones?

I think we will look cool with face mask, face shield and sunglasses

Most don't wear sunglasses because they wear glasses! They can't see if they wear sunglasses!

If you wear contact lens or have eye operation, many chaep stylo sunglasses available.

Uniqlo below $20. Their sale from $14.90 to $9.90.

H&M, I bought some for $2 to $3 during their sale.

Rarely see places sellig clip ons. I guess you have to go to optical shops. Could be hard to find a clip on shape to match your glasses.  Looks cumbersome too.

If you have the cash, you can buy a second or third pair of your prescription spectacles with dark tinted lenses. I have two types. One with a darker tint for general outdoor wear in bright sunlight and another with a lighter tint for reading on the beach or where I need more light getting to my eyes. For fashionistas, the tint does not have to be black.

To be really effective in protecting your eyes, you have to invest in glasses that  block 99% or 100% of UV rays. Polarised lenses normally block all UV rays and are extra useful in blocking glare from the sun bouncing of polished surfaces like car windows and also from water. Really cheap sunglasses may only block 50% of UV rays.

Years ago I tried clip on lenses. Gave them up because they are just too fussy to put on and they look kinda stupid!

These clip-ons can be customized to your spectacles frame shape. Prices ranges from $80 to $120 per pair but that was more than 5 years ago. Now with capitalism on the rise and the rich businessmen all wanting to get even richer, they will sell them to you at exorbitant prices. The worst type of spectacle shops are those local chains. I recall Nanyang Optics actually quoting me a pair of multi-focal glasses with frame at a cost of $2000 (TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!) when a small tiny local shop at Queenstown Shopping Center only charged me for $250 for those pair of glasses. She was also the one who charged me $80-$120 for the additional clip-on sunglasses fitted to the shape of the frames I got from her. I am pretty sure she profited from it, even though her profit margins was pretty thin. I sort of appreciate her work and also sympathize her small business which seemed to be only barely making money, which was why I frequented her over the years.

Oh, really?? Clip-ons are "old fashion tech"??  ... Dear Mr know-it-all, so how do people who needs to wear sunglasses do for their need of sunglasses?  You think those transition lens are good for everyone? Have you thought of the consequences if a car driver drives into some CTE/KPE or whatever tunnels while the glasses are still transiting into clarity?

I use reading glasses and I need a little degree change for looking far ahead when I ride... I make lens for my sunglasses with tinted polarisers. Trainsition lense are good but pricey. I only own one pair for that which is almost no tint till I hit bright sunlight then it darkens but I do not drive into tunnels since I am a cyclist. But I do have other competitive lens I bought from oversea to replace my Oakleys. If not I can still use standard sunglasses if I do not need to see that far. Ya I know it all, you know why? I don't think of sex all the time and read useless social media and hang at forum making hateful remarks. .. I use my therapy for dyslexia to fill my mind with useful facts each and every day.

And YES.. OLD FASHION clip on is right. Not that you can not find them but it is old tech. It is not popular given its lower practicality of use. Comprende?

That what some of us meant .   Photochromic lenses like Transitions. No need to fiddle around trying to hook on a clip on while driving or walking from indoor and then out and have to swipe glasses all the time. The only people who might not want that is like me who use reading glasses and a glasses that has some minor degree for looking far. Then you still need two glasses all the time. But if you have no problem with degree ...then a Photochrtomic glasses is best. Expensive an investment but worth it.

I wear glasses so i used to wear the clip-on ones.

They work well except that they make the entire spectacles frame very heavy so it keeps sliding down your nose.

Also, as some have mentioned, not all glasses can fit the clip-on shades.

Actually, S'pore's sun is tolerable. If you go to many US states, you will definitely need sunglasses because the sun's glare there is very strong due to the difference in lattitude and cloud cover.

For them, the sun doesn't rise all the way up into the sky unlike in tropical countries like S'pore. It hangs halfway in the sky and the glare is much worse than in S'pore.

You practically cannot drive without shades in the US.

My ex-boss (in her 60s) wears sunglasses inside shopping centres.

Nothing wrong with her eyes. She's just a very hiao person.

Those type are known as transition glasses. I particularly do not like them because they make you look too stylo-mylo when you don't intend to, because you simply cannot control when the tint occurs and when it doesn't. Like I have said before, what if you are going to drive through a tunnel and the lens do not turn clear fast enough? Furthermore, how would your friends/family/customers feel if you talk to them with the full tint turn on, simply because you are under bright sunlight? It is common courtesy to have eye-contact when you talk to people, and such uncontrollable changes of tint makes one look discourteous.

I don't even know why you need transition glasses for reading glasses! You need to read your books under the sun huh? You really shouldn't confuse dyslexia with plain stupidity.

Oh Nayang Optical. Was at their Tanglin Mall branch choosing sunglasses during 1997. Saies man was cold and not keen to serve. Avoided their stores since then.

Capitol Optical Bras Basah.  Salesman very reluctant to do reading glasses. Finally agreee to do for $200+.  Then I commented :"why so reluctant?" Then one fat lady sais:"you might as well save your money!" I agreed and left.

Went to a HDB shop near Clementi Mall. Rge lady accepted my presciption with my old frame without hesitation. $100+. Got it in a week.

For sunglasses, some call them photochromic. To block out strong light, such lenses are not so effective. But for general purpose, it still serves its function. I got a Rudy Project Photochromic sunglasses and I like it so far. Using it for hiking and light jogging.

I am local Singaporean, born and bred, but lived and work overseas for a few years.
There is a strong reason why people dont wear sunglasses or stand out too much in Singapore.

It is mostly because we all come from the same tiny island, our experience growing up is mostly the same.
From Jurong to Pasir Ris, the Singapore experience is more or less alike.
So it is strange to have someone talk or present themselves differently, if they claim to be Singaporean too.

When I came back from US, San Fran, where people wear sunglasses normally, some people here said,

"Wah lao, you so stylo now. Everywhere also wear sunglasses! No need lah, wont blind one ah. Take off lah!"
I was not wearing them indoors, but just as normal as eye protection, haha.

Likewise, people who dress different, or choose to express themselves with style, are called "posers" or "wannabes".

It is not really wrong or right issue, just that for such a homogenous society,  it is hard to reconcile how different another Singaporean can be.

So we tend to self-police or point out Singaporeans who want to do things different.

Which shop? I want to support her too!

I think I know which shop that is! It's Meng-something located at Level 1 of the Queenstown Shopping Center and their shopfront face the center of the shopping center where some smaller eateries run their business. It is run by a couple in their 40s or 50s but the female boss is more approachable, so I tend to hang around until the female boss becomes available. Their shop is indeed so small that there is just a small aisle between the counter and the wall showcase for customers to sit. Even the front of the shop can be easily missed if you walk too quickly. But I do frequent the shop over the years because the price is quite decent and they seem to be barely making profit, so i thought I will just go ahead and support them. But make sure you know what you are looking for first, eg the index of the glasses that you want, the type of frames that you need etc, so that you do not get swayed by the lady boss sales talk. But overall, I find their prices quite OK the last time I visited them.

Not just style, lots of people expect others to think the same way too. Group think. How uneducated is that? But that's just Spore. No one can be an individual or different. Peope just too narrow minded. Wasn't that bad in the eighties where most rock stars were outragoeus. Now all young men wear all black and women wear wash out colors. Anything else is called "weird".

Regression, I'm afraid.

Yeah, Singapore's negative traits are Self-policing, Kaypoh but at the same time, major Apathy.

Many times also, people make fun or whisper/gossip about another person or situation, but then pretend nothing is happening when confronted.

It creates an environment of unnecessary trivial shame and insecurity. Some asian countries also tend to have these traits.

Or enjoying a spectacle, but when asked for help, "Ah dowan dowan...dont get involved, dont get involved". Case in point.

Very true. Like all those cruisers at all places. Want to be spectators but  not willing participants.  Kissu, kiasi, kia cheng hu come and harass. And Singaporeans over react over the most trivial things. Like people who consider color, design and pattern as "weird".

These type of behavior originate from school. Students never speak up cos they fear making mistakes and being laughed at. Go foerign uni, same. Singaporeans tiam tiam kwai kwai.

Foreigners come here also catch the disease. Evident in your posted pix. Like all those stupid maids. Talk and laugh loudly like they are so happening.  Fools.

There were some idle aunties gossiping about unemployed folks. So I said:"Unemployed want to gossip about others not working. Rely on gossip to pass your days."
