Guest hehe Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 personally i know how money can be a destroyer of friendships, I lent money to a few friends over the years, these are not PLU friends, they are my childhood friends. Other than 1 that acknowledged still owning me money. The rest act as if nothing ever happened. worst still, they started avoiding me fearing that I would ask them for the money, even though I have mentally prepared to write off those loans. To the thread starter, are you prepared to forgo that 3k altogether? if not, it is better to be upfront to him, and that could be a good way to see whether is that guy in the relationship just for the money. Also remember there are "professional" borrowers out there, who would find the chance to get money from any sources, be it chatroom to msn. Someone wrote about a 17yo asking for money, before even knowing him personally, he already asked for money, what would happen if a relationship (be it sexual or long term) started? So how much did you lend and the amount in default now?
Asyrus Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 (edited) Hi Fellas...Recently I met a guy ( someone in his mid 40s , self-employed ) , we had fun , he said he likes me , he wanted to share his life with me and be with me for the rest of my life. And that was when I knew him for barely 3 days . He later told me he owes bank about $3k and can't seem to pay back as he only could afford to pay the interests on a mthly basis . Out of impulse , i said i could lend him the money. Now i feel regret ...coz we just started to date each other and money issue is already involved - which should be the last thing to happen ...guys any advice ?The main difference between love and infatuation is the commitment with the justification of time. Can you imagine if AIDS is what he shared with you when he said 'he wanted to share his life with you for the rest of your life'?Sound so 1 sided...Come to think of it...if someone is self employed, how does he owe the bank 3K?Credit Card bill? (ie can only manage interest...sounds like it...may hint that he has a spending problem)If he is truely self employed, either he'll have no problems with it or he'll owe more (at least 10K)...fishy... fishy... fishy.... Guest -Butted- Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Once, my nephew wanted to bottom some money from me to help another relative. Literally "using my money to save his face". I refused saying that i dont lend money to anybody. Not even my own children. Then, during CNY, i texted to wish him Happy New Year. He reply in text.."Sorry i just lost my hp, may i know who are you?". Now i felt that i no longer his favourite uncle. Money can destroy relationship. Even with own father, mother, wife, husband, etc.Even prostitute wanted you to pay first before entering him/her. Try paying half price and you get half penetration.

Guest BBQ Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 When come to $$, i always think tat once its out, its hard to get them back. Of course small amount wont hurt much and able to get it after sometime, but it is a hussle to get them back. Especially when that borrower pretend to forget or need to be reminded several times. So i will normally reject their requests and tell them i hardly have enough spare cash. Well, if they are angry. so be it.
Guest Guest Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 haiz i learnt my lesson since young. i lent about $300 to this fellow army mate nearing ORD. I normally dun lend money to anyone at all but this guy (not PLU) was a very nice chap. and he said that he needed it urgently and would definitely pay me back by ORD. I thought, $300...hmm....should be okay, so agreed.then ORD came...he didn't return me the money. I sms him and he said that he would return the following week. 2 weeks later, still no news...so I began to sms and keep calling him. but this f**ker, never reply and did not pick up my call at all. and he never contact me again. i was so angry, i even thought of going back to army camp to ask for his address and to confront him. but in the end, i didn't. what i was sad/angry is not the mere $300 involved but the trust and integrity of that guy.so i never never lend $ to anyone again.
Guest LW Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 If one want to borrow money from me, I will want him to do the following before I lend him.1) a photocopy of his NRIC,2) show me where he living,3) wirten in black and white that he borrow money from me and maybe record the process down with h/p' cam,4) give me his families' reachable contacts. So, anyone want to borrow from me?

Guest LW Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Nope. I don't like to hazard people like that. I prefer to post wanted posters around, and "visit" his families, friends, company and etc if he don't return my money as he promised.

If he says.... cannot pay one short, ask him to commit minimal payment each month & you see how it goes. Don't be soft on this, is just a matter of principal.Once, there was a guy 30+ I met in sauna. after knowing him for almost 1 month. He borrowed money from me saying he had no money to makan. (BTW. He has a job - F&B line). I asked him to commit the date of return & he said said give him 2 weeks. I agreed.2 weeks later, I didnt hear from him so I called him & he said he hasn't got his salary yet. So, I told him firmly, if u cannot pay on time, at least have the courtesy to inform me that the payment will be late.Eventually, he paid back the full amount to me. Prior that, I made my point clear to him that "Be a real man, honor what you say".However, after this money-borrow thing, the next time I see him in the sauna, he siam me .....hahahahhaa. ixmog Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Although I maybe a bottom with an ass hole bigger than Da Yi Long (loan shark), I'll never borrow money to people. The rules are : it will be diificult for me to ask back the loan amount.Second, it spoil all relationship.Third, I have money not for loan but for saving during rainy season for myself.Sounds selfish right ? I had seen many friends got into this kind of money relationship and in the end they can't get back the money.

tyan Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Agreed totally. Usually once i borrow out. I never expect it will come back. Unless I know the person very closely. There was once I am jobless. Desperate to pay for my bill. I borrowed $500 from my friend. And slowly pay him back in monthly installment. But the feeling was terrible. But if u ever wanna break with a guy u dun like, that is a good move. haha.

patrickkoh Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 TO: those who take people for a ride &/or take things for granted ... my advice to YOU: 留一点尊严给自己吧!!!These people see their problem more than their 尊严.Warning to those who visit One-seven. Knew this guy (Dont Mention Name, but he is fair-looking and always wears slippers because he likes to be clean)from One seven and become friend. When told he quit his job, stupid of me to lend him few thousands to clear his Credit card bills.Later realise he use the money to roll over his $40,000+ of gambling debt incurred by his credit card overdraft. When he receives his pay, he didnt bother say to pay back abit.Instead he went gambling with the reasons that few thousands cannot help very much, therefore use for chances to make more.Chase him for the money, ask to talk to his mother.Feel sad because he does not look like that sort of person.Later realise I am not the only stupid victim. Lesson learnt.Never trust anyone. Money can see a person's character.Patrick Koh
Man40s Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 For me, it will be NEVER!I will not loan any cash out to anyone.I learned my lesson well. Loaned to 2 close friends.Friend A- He did not return the $2000, whenever he see me, he walk away and hide himself.Friend B- Borrowed $5000, returned $500 monthly as installment on his pay day, but every pay day, I need to remind him.At times, he was unable to return. Collected up to $4500 and the last installment, he was terminated by the company, thus lost my last $500.Well, at time he still call and meet up but never mentioned about the last $500.At least I got my $4500 back,Now, I just tell the borrower that I am down with cash or I need to pay for my loan(which I have none).Frankly, I don't lend money. Just be honest, I think they will understand...
if-i-were-you Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 just want to share with you guys a lesson learnt from my fren...he used his credit line and credit card advanced cash to lend his friend $$. the total amount was about $50k. he didnt know that his fren was a problem gambler and his fren told him that this $$ was to start a company. there's black & white about the loan. but few months later his fren refused to return him the $$. and subsequently this so called "best fren" became insolvent and hence could not return him the $$.now, he hires debt collector to get the $$ back but the amount he gets back each month is just $300. the payment to him each month is inconsistent, ie. sometimes his fren pays $300 each month, sometimes he doesnt pay any cent at all.then, now they turn enemy.another story.... still my fren...he used his credit line again to lend another fren of him(let's call this fella Mr.A) $$, total amount was $18k. Mr.A said that he would bear the full interest rate with the amount he borrowed. Mr.A claimed that he would receive $500k soon but needed to pay $18k first to get the paperwork done. my fren believed Mr.A, so he lent the $$ to Mr.A. Mr.A even let my fren to have his car to drive for few months so that my fren could trust Mr.A totally. then few months later, Mr.A never called him at all, so my fren called Mr.A to check on the progress. then, Mr.A even told my fren on the face that he did NOT borrow any $$ from my fren!! what a bastard.my fren was very angry, so he went to find Mr.A at his flat. but, this guy has already worked in Dubai and do not come back to singapore anymore. now my fren is in trouble. he's unable to repay the $$ to the banks and he is facing bankruptcy...the morale of this story, do not lend $$ to your fren. Most borrowers who ask you to lend them $$ are bad quality borrowers because they cannot get any loan from the financial institutions. perhaps they just want to cheat your $$, but never lend any $$ to your frens... when you decide to lend $$ to your frens, you must be prepared to lose the $$.

I only lent the money after I knew him for a few years and have a better feel of his character. The money was for his own business. I'm glad after a few years, he returned the money. I was also in touch with him all the while and observed how hard he worked, sometimes giving advice. I think if there's a genuine relationship be it friendship or acquaintanceship, there should be involvement between the lender and borrower. Otherwise, I would take it as a hit-and-run case and logic forbids any involvement at all.I also have an ex-colleague who I've been a friend with. It also involves credit card debts and snowballing due to not paying attention to the outstanding loan. We talked before and had been approached for a loan but I refused. We are still touch and sometimes I'll give some advise but that's about it.If the case where one borrows money to pay credit cards, and if the debt is fully cleared, I would strongly advise him to cancel the card and to be shown proof that it been done so. Best that you're present when the cards are cancelled - tough times call for tough actions, especially gambling cases.

Guest desperate Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 this month got 3 friends want to borrow money. will u lend? some r even 2 days friends that just met at sauna. have economic crisis started? rather save it for myslef for rainy days how to depend on others? actually 1 case was the owner took company money and gamble all away at sentosa casino , now employee got no salary, thus my friend have to borrow money from me, but do i have to hold resposible for this shit create by the owner.
Guest bearded1 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Simple answer - "neither a borrower nor a lender be". A very old saying, but never more relevant than it is today. It is extremely unusual to be asked for money where I come from (UK). Indeed, it is deemed embarrassing and almost insulting to receive such a request. Some Singaporeans seem to find it easy to request to borrow cash. I have been asked on numorous occasions since arriving here - maybe I have that gullible look?Twice I have been taken for a ride - it will never happen again. I now find it very easy to say "no". Perhaps you needed to take a strong approach. Call me cynical but I suspect that inevitably you will not be repaid. Sad but true...........
Guest beefybtm Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 For me, lending is to be prepared it never gets returned.
passinthenight Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 You will find that this is only the very start! Now that the casino is open, lots of desperate gamblers will con non-gamblers into lending them money for some made-up crises that they say has happened. (All in the blind belief they will win their money back!) Very sad but very true! Be very very careful when friends suddenly need financial help. It can grab anyone! Even the people you trust the most.

Guest Guest111 Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 I used to have a sex buddy many years back and we were like good friends and have a kind of special connection. We even travelled together and he was kind of interested in me.But we were not meant to be together. And then we stopped seeing each other for some years and led our seperate lives. Recently he borrowed $3000 from me and he has yet to pay me all the money until I get an agent to collect on my behalf.I suspect this friend is now in financial deep-shit owing to gambling , and he has got married with a PRC and probably has a kid. He now has financial commitments to raise a family. He has lied to me about the reason why he borrowed the $3000 from me , that it was used to pay for some administrative cost to collect some inheritance from UK , and he would pay me asap once he got the inherited money which he never did even after I have asked him to pay me back many times and he never kept his words to pay me as committed. Also he was not honest to me about his marriage.Recently , he told me his life is in a mess , his mother has passed away and he has used a lot of money , he is now retrenched and he wanted to commit suicide and asked me whether I could allow him to delay the paymemt until he found a job. But I don't want to and unable to believe him anymore as I feel that he is taking advantage of my kindness again. I have hardened my heart and I still demanded that he should pay me the money he owe me on time. What would you fella BW respond if you were in my shoe ?
Guest Guest Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 u loan people money, be prepare to lost it. this is not some channel 8 drama. u know he is lying. so it depend if u want the money back at all or maybe otherwise
doncoin Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 When you choose to lend money out, always be prepared not to get it back. The situation is not so much about your friend taking advantage of you etc. but more about you, yourself. Let's put it this way, you can always earn back what you lost. You can choose to let this experience ruin future experiences of lending to people who will actually pay back, or never lend to others again. You can choose not to believe in him, and demand the money back, or agree to work out a payment plan. It's your call. It's your money. Love.
Guest Guess what? Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Recently a good friend of mine with more than ten years of friendship asked to borrow $10k from me. I asked him how is he going to Pay me back. He said he can pay me $3k each mOnth. Do u think he could? Dont think so. I had lend my the other good classmate $8k more than 10 years ago, even he has the money now, still have not got it back. So the moral of the story is 'once the money depareds from your pocket, never expect to get it to come back'. I lost $8k 10 years ago, would I wanna to be $10k poorer now? Like someone said earlier, your money, your decision. If u keep think why this and that? You will be the one that is suffering although u are going to be poorer.
doncoin Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 My take: Don't lend $10k upfront. Lend a portion of it first- i.e. $3k. If it keeps his word in repaying it back in one month, then you can lend more. Love.
Foreign Talent Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 (edited) Can I share a recent experience? A friend asked me to borrow money, I said no I don't lend money - if you really need money, find something you can part with and sell it to me and I will give you cash for it. When you have money, you can go shopping again. So he showed me some things, I bought something off him, gave him a reasonable price (despite the fact that I didn't actually need it, but decided to help him anyway) - so yeah, that's one way to deal with the situation. Guest Guess what? Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 My take: Don't lend $10k upfront. Lend a portion of it first- i.e. $3k. If it keeps his word in repaying it back in one month, then you can lend more. This is not the first time this good friend of mine borrowed money from me. Have always give him few hundreds to a thousand for 'transition' helps. Sometimes he paid back and sometimes he doesn't. But this time is $10k. However, this time he mentioned he is sick and need money. Btw, he is one of my good friend with working adult children and working wife. I m prepare to lose a friend...... As I have rejected him .... But my concern is what happen if he is really sick and need the money for the sickness.
Blissfull Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Since you have already lent him the money. If you don't need the money urgently, maybe work out a plan for him to return you part by part. Asking full amount at one go is a little imposible, if not he wouldn't have borrowed money from your in the first place.Good luck with whichever choice you make. "Well, I didn't know it would come to this but that's what happens when you're on your own."
PaterTenebrarum Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 NEVER loan out money. If you want to help, give the other person money and dont expect to be paid again. Tell the person that it is a gft and to never ask you for money again. If the person pays back, it is a bonus.
MarriedTop Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Instead of borrowing, I would think that is giving away the money. This reminds me an incident, about 10 years ago. I loaned RM 300 ( not even Sing $) to someone who change his career at that time claimed that he need some help to "bridge" to the new job. Yes, he made it.When we about to meet up, I gently remind him to bring along the money. " Ok, ok ok. sure do , no issue." The next day, before the meeting, I received a urgent sms saying that he suffered from diarrhea. From very closed friend we became stranger for the sake of RM300. We din meet up ever since.Be your choice! Loan between friends will sour the friendship.

If I can afford to part with it, then I'd do it just to help the person out, without ever expecting to get it back. If I can't afford it, I'll tell the person straight up that I can't lend him anything.
sum1outhere_03 Posted October 7, 2011 Posted October 7, 2011 谈钱伤感情!(money talk hurts!)A simple word of advise: “It takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it”.Don't be a hero to help people clear their mess, otherwise your life will be in mess as well.I am one such example. If it's a small sum that you can manage, then fine. Otherwise, do remind him that he's still owing you the sum of money that is not being paid forth. Will you be my valentine's?
