On 5 October 2008, in an interview with the Sunday Times, Prince, also the executive chairman of the church council, acknowledged that he was "well-paid" with his salary going up $50,000 a month.

On 30 March 2009, The Straits Times reported that the church had paid one employee between $500,001 and $550,000 in its last financial year. Under the recommendations of the Code of Governance for charities then,[9] all charities and non-profit organisations in Singapore were encouraged to disclose the salary bands of their top executives to the Commissioner of Charities. While not confirming the identity of the employee, the church responded that its policy is to "recognize and reward key contributors to the church and Senior Pastor Prince is the main pillar of our church's growth and revenue."[

Our politicians said SGD600K is peanut and anyone earn less than SGD500K per annum is mediocre.  Which means, almost all BW members are mediocre.

The interest of the church leaders to accumulate wealth through a Church started already in 2010 with the Suntec investment.

Probably, this might have been one of the reasons for the Gov to step in and look deeper into the actions.

I m not sure why people are so damn stupid to follow these new Church creations?

The song is the same and even sung by a pastors wife it will not sound better.

Just wonder those people who donate so much into such churches, do they actually know what charity is about?

I in my honest opinion don't think they know what is charity about.

The best thing is after release from jail  the guy is going on as nothing has happened and with a statement that he was "unjustly" imprisoned.

Wouldn't any other organisation have expelled the "culprits"?

From Wiki:

However, in Page 264-267 of the appeal judgment, Kong is characterised as being "coloured by greed and self-interest", as the Crossover project was designed to benefit Sun Ho and Kong Hee. Sun Ho's contract with Xtron (a company controlled by Kong Hee) was to entitle Sun to 25% of gross income (estimated to reach US$30M) regardless of project costs, in addition to a large salary.[44] In addition, he had told members they were off-salary and needed financial support. A private fund was set up to raise over $3 million and was fully expended by the couple in just 3 years.[45]

S$310 million Suntec investment

On 6 March 2010, City Harvest Church announced that it had purchased a significant stake in Suntec Convention Centre and will be using its facilities for church services, the project will cost an estimated S$310 million, including shares acquisition, renovation and rental costs.[24][25][26] Church founder Kong Hee said in a statement that the move "allows [the church] to move from a present expensive rental model to a more financially sustainable ownership model for the long term".[27] However, some brought up the point that as a registered charity, CHC's income – expected to include profits and dividends from space rental and tenant leases in Suntec Singapore in the future – is non-taxable. The church has clarified that the investment is indirect, through a wholly owned subsidiary for the purpose of taxation and separate accounting. Questions surfaced among the public whether religious organisations, which are registered as charities, should be allowed to go into business using what are essentially donor funds.[24]

The Commissioner of Charities (COC) sought clarifications on the transaction.[25] The church stated it was under a non-disclosure agreement which required the details of the transaction to remain confidential, but explained that the investment was made through a holding company that is not a charity organization and does not enjoy tax breaks; and had disclosed details of the deal to the COC as well as the Urban Redevelopment Authority upon request.[28] The church also said that there was a "strong and unfounded allegation" floating online that the Management Board and Kong were "deliberately concealing a number of embarrassing facts from its members" with regard to the Suntec investment, saying that the allegation was "furthest from the truth",[26] and later released a notice stating that Charities and foundations often use donor funds to invest and generate sustainable income for their intended causes.[29]

On 21 July 2012, the church announced details of its investment in Suntec Singapore. A total of 39.2% shareholding was acquired at a total cost of $97.75 million. Public-listed Suntec REIT holds the other 60.8%. The remaining balance in the projected building fund will be used for costs such as equipment, furniture and fittings, periodical shifting costs (due to other events at the venue), committed rentals, optional rentals and refundable rental deposits.[30][31] In 2013, it was revealed that the church had undertaken a $50m loan with high interests to finance the acquisition of additional shares, as the building fund had largely been exhausted over the years on venue and equipment rentals, while using the Singapore Expo from 2006-2010. If the church is unable to finance the loan, it may in default lose up to 19.2% of its shareholding as part of the loan agreement.

Plagiarism

In March 2010, a blogger identified plagiarism on Kong Hee's 'Daily Devotionals' as they were similar to writings to another publication, "The Leadership Bible" which was published 10 years ago. The copied text were published as physical copies into two books, "Renewing Your Spiritual Energy in 90 Days" without accreditation to the original authors. Kong Hee's daily devotionals were originally compiled from his personal reading notes and printed as supplementary reading for his members, free of charge. Some years later, due to popular demand overseas, a local publisher compiled and released foreign language translations of the devotional for sale.

Kong Hee posted a note on his website and explained that the devotion was "originally meant only for internal circulation among the members of my church. As such, there was an oversight in not quoting the sources of some portions that borrow from the writings of other Christian authors." There was also an apology for the oversight.[48][49][50][dead link]

The publisher who is also a member of City Harvest Church, acknowledged that at the time of publication, both himself and Mr Kong were aware that certain portions of the content were not original.[49][50][51] The publisher of "Renewal" has since made amendments to the soft copies to include accreditation.

I guess if you are to dig into CHC's members ranks, it's just going to be a matter of time that someone with political connections and/or power to be sighted in their community sooner or later.

In fact, the lawyer who defended Kong Hee was none other than PAP Senior Minister of State for Law and Health, Mr Edwin Tong, himself. And in his interview with Channel News Asia, he even mentioned that it is his "JOB" to defend Kong Hee, and the "case came to the firm" and he "was asked to take it on". He completely forgot that it was also supposed to be his "JOB" as an MP and also the deputy chair of the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Home Affairs and Law during that time, to guard this nation against predators like Kong Hee and CHC.

The country has really gone to the dogs now....

Why is this in the Flaming thread?

Maybe it is an act of precaution by Blowing Wind.   Just in case the Divinity exploited by CHC is real, and this God protects him and his church enterprise.  (it would not be a Christian god, because Christ preached poverty and CHC is the total opposite of this. )

So if this is the case,  while we posters will be sent by Kong Hee's God to the bottom of Dante's inferno for the rest of eternity,  BW will be saved  :)

Guest Try and see

Kong Hee & family no longer staying at Sentosa Cove penthouse

Public records from the Singapore Land Authority showed that the property sits on a 263 sq m plot and is owned by real estate firm Lucky Realty.

This suggested the house is rented.

The house comes with a swimming pool, five bedrooms, a helper’s room, a lift and a roof terrace.

A 2018 listing indicated a monthly rental of S$12,000 for the property.

But we don't want the indigenous tribes of the Amazon to be members of that disgusting Church. We don't what proselytism from her at the Amazon. She can sing her songs on Youtube or the City Harvest Church website because her proselytism efforts would be more or less wasted due to her non existing talent...

By the way: Note the church name City HARVEST Church. just wonder what they are harvesting... ha ha

The Indians of indigenous tribes of the Amazon are probably too smart to buy the dumb stories CHC proselytizes, and they don't have the social incentives to join that church.

I can only speculate, but I suspect that HARVEST was chosen to make believe that they seed the souls of people withe the Grace of God.  In reality, the real HARVEST is the money of their members

Unfortunately, many of the indigenous tribes fell trap to those proselytisers in South America, Australia, Papua and other parts.

But Kong Hee is now downsizing from a bungalow at Sentosa to one small 5 room flat with roof terrace for Sun Ho to practise singing. Hopefully it is far awar from other houses, then the neighbours won't be so annoyed from her missing talent... Kong Hee can take a deep dive sorry deep hide in the swimming pool.... Strange that there are still so many people to keep them afloat.

They will probably have stacked away sufficient wealth to stay afloat even if CHC goes up in flames,  provided they don't ride their high lifestyles too long.

But, even if the Lord blesses them with long life and they run out of money, they have worshiped the God of Prosperity so long that he won't let them down.

They will never run out of money, for there are many already brainwashed by them (still believing they are innocent) and willing to support them both spiritually & financially.

I also think that they will have financial support throughout their lives.  But how you support them spiritually?   Televangelists like them often are characters like Faust who made a pact with the devil.  Kong Hee and wife may have received the adoration and wealth from their church in exchange for their souls!

Do they sing the Sun Ho silly songs at the Karaoke???

Steve: the church members are praying for them (yes was no typo: praying not paying. ha ha) = spiritual support

Inside Singapore's City Harvest megachurch scandal

By Tessa Wong BBC News, Singapore
  • 21 October 2015

The City Harvest megachurch scandal is the biggest corruption case squeaky-clean Singapore has seen in years. From racy music videos to a convoluted money trail, the case has riveted Singaporeans.

City Harvest Church was founded by the charismatic pastor Kong Hee and his wife, pastor turned pop singer Sun Ho, in 1989.

Known for its slick image and wealth-focused brand of Christianity, it has grown rapidly and is now estimated to have some 30,000 members in Singapore and elsewhere.

But on Wednesday, Kong and five other church leaders were convicted of fraud, in a case worth $50m Singapore dollars ($35m; £23m).

'China Wine'

The charges related to the church leadership's attempts to boost Ms Ho's music career worldwide, which ultimately failed.

In 2002, City Harvest launched what it called the Crossover Project - a scheme to fund Ms Ho's career and spread the gospel through her music. She was touted as a demure "singing pastor" in Asia, cutting several Mandarin singles that had modest success in the region.

Alarm bells were soon raised when a church member went to the press the following year with allegations of financial impropriety. He backed down and apologised after the church threatened to sue.

City Harvest soon decided that Ms Ho needed to crack the US market. She first struck out as a dance music singer, then had a makeover in 2007 and was re-styled as a vampy rapper-singer nicknamed Geisha.

The church engaged US rapper Wyclef Jean to produce an album with singles such as China Wine - a song depicting Ms Ho as a Chinese exotic dancer in Jamaica - and Mr Bill, in which she sang about killing her husband. They had little success.

Her new image and flashy lifestyle in Los Angeles, living in an expensive Hollywood Hills mansion, raised eyebrows. Many Singaporeans saw these as incongruous with her duties as a church pastor.

The collaboration tanked, and Xtron, a church-backed music production company that was managing the project, was left with millions of dollars in losses.

Singaporean authorities launched their investigation into the church in 2010 after receiving complaints, and arrested the leaders two years later after a review by the commissioner of charities uncovered irregularities.

In court, prosecutors outlined a convoluted money trail in which six church leaders and accountants, including Kong, funnelled S$24m from a church building fund into sham bond investments into Xtron and an Indonesian glass maker.

They were later accused of using another S$26m to cover up their tracks.

The judge noted there was no evidence of "wrongful gain" by the defendants, but found them guilty of varying counts of criminal breach of trust and falsification of accounts. They are facing lengthy jail terms.

The leaders remain adamant that they have done no wrong - they insist they only had honest intentions in doing God's work - as does the church which continues to fully support them. It is a stance that has largely drawn scorn and criticism from Singaporeans.

Ms Ho - who was not on trial - said in a statement that the church leaders had "placed our faith in God and trust that whatever the outcome, He will use it for our good".

Prosperity gospel

City Harvest Church, also known as CHC, takes its cue from US counterparts with its slick pop concert-like services, stylishly dressed pastors and worship leaders, and preaching of the "prosperity gospel".

This is an enticing message which links wealth to Christianity - the stronger the faith and the more one gives to the church, the more wealth one will ultimately receive from God.

Sociologist Terence Chong, who has studied megachurches in Asia, tells the BBC that such churches tend to target the middle and working classes in the region.

"The socio-economic profile of their congregation provides them with a good financial pool to tap on. These churches also offer a sense of community and particular sensitivity to consumerism and capitalism, thus making them very relevant to the real world in the eyes of believers," he says.

The City Harvest scandal is unlikely to impact the growth of Asian megachurches on the whole, but will provide a good case study if the leaders are jailed, says Dr Chong, who is with the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore.

"The leadership [in such churches] is personality-based and relies less on institutional structures... Would the church see greater attrition or would an appointed caretaker be able to hold the flock together?"

CHC has made clear who that caretaker would be. Earlier this week Kong posted on his Instagram account a picture of his wife at an ordination ceremony.

"Please continue to pray for Sun and our new generation leadership team, as they work together for CHC 2.0!" he said.

The article was written years ago.  Now we know that CHC continues as before.  And the "new generation leadership team"?

One sign of the corruption of these megachurches is their NEPOTISM.   The wife logically took over the "leadership" from her husband!

This is what happens in the US megachurches. Business is too god to let it fall into hands outside the family.

This follows the model of Kim Jong-un following his father Kim Jong-il.   Of course, being birds of the same feather!

Here in Texas we have the  "reverend" Joel Osteen placing his son Jonathan Osteen in the family business after inheriting it from his father John Osteen

Yes.

What I should have said is "giving them morale booster".   Die-hard fans will utter helpful words like:

"You have done nothing wrong and God knows it.  We have faith in you.  We are a thousand per cent behind you."

"The judges were misled by the devil to impose such unfair verdicts.  But don't worry, you'll be richly rewarded in life hereafter."

"Perhaps you were chosen to suffer for the sins of humankind, just like Jesus.  You had to go through 2 years' jail.  But God will bless you the more."

"The China Wine thingy is just a means to an end - to advance your singing career so as to subsequently spread God's message.  No need to feel guilty.  You have not let God down."

"Do not feel disheartened or despondent.  You have so much ardent supporters like us.  Jiayou!" ('add oil' in Chinese)

LOL!  This is exactly what the devil would inspire also in these Holy People.  It makes sense,  followers of a devilish cult must also do the work of the devil

IF I had to believe in Christianity,  I would stay with the original Catholicism:  no nepotism,  no prosperity gospel, firm universal rules!

SINGAPORE SINGER SUN HO RETURNS WITH "SONIC TACTILE GLIDE"

Singapore-based pop star and pastor Sun Ho announces her return to the international dance music scene with her new single, "Tactile Sonic Glide". Featuring a collaboration with DJ Tiesto, she describes their collaboration on her new single as "a reaction to the increasingly fragmented and mindless sound-bite culture we live in". A flurry of kalimba notes begins the piece, a fast-paced pointillist soundscape that echoes a frenetic world. Slow swells of bass and driving beats soon add depth; Sun's ethereal and soothing vocals soon float over the top of this hypnotic concoction. Over nearly 15 minutes, the music stretches, expands, and contracts, bounteous energy moving in gentle waves. The result is not frantic, but cosmic, an expanse of wondrous melody that serves as an aural isolation tank for the overwhelmed.

"Tactile Sonic Glide" is Sun's first single since her 2009 hit single "Fancy Free". She embraces a new attitude in her new full-length album, a collection of storms, street sounds, and jangling polyrhythms featuring her signature silky vocals. Upcoming album "Flashbacks in a Crystal Ball" sees Sun putting her skills to describe life's "aha" moments musically. "Tactile Sonic Glide" seems to bring with it the existential revelation of universal vastness, underscored by its freely moving instrumental lines. With this new single, Sun signals her most massive creative vision to date - one that promises to entrance her audience in every possible way.
