Brit Pop Rules! (But Sucks Sometimes Too!)

Recommended Posts

The Robot was switched off in 1989.
In the equivalent of a robot coma,
stuck in a cupboard, cleared out and destined for a car boot sale
– he was bought by ‘Mum’ for 50p as a gift for her 8 year old.

She installed new batteries and switched the robot on again in August 2013.
The family were astounded that he was still functioning.
After a successful reboot the robot began to analyse his surroundings and before long was ready to speak.

As he began to voice his thoughts,
they realised he was definitely stuck in the 1980s!
They named him… The Retrobot

The Retrobot is amazed and upset by what he sees around him today.
In 1989 Kylie & Jason sang Especially For You and its his favourite record.
Checking out the chart today, a culture shock in itself, he was totally angered by what he saw.

He hates Miley Cyprus, or whatever her name is (he often gets things comically wrong)
– even worse is Baby Gaga, Robin Thicko and Broccoli Spears.

He needed to do something about it.
He was amazed to find out that Mike Stock was not still dominating the charts in 2013,
and persuaded him to come out of his retirement home in Brighton and help promote his Christmas record for the whole family to enjoy...

Following the death of Nelson Mandela on December 5,

U2s latest single, Ordinary Love, has emerged as a contender for this year’s Christmas Number 1 as the British record buying public pay tribute to the late president of South Africa.

The single is taken from the soundtrack to the film Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.

What does Adele, Florence & The Machine, Ellie Goulding, Jessie J, Emeli Sande and Tom Odell have in common?

They've all won the BRITs Critics Choice Award!

This year's winner has just been revealed,

and the name to watch out for in 2014 is Sam Smith!

Not familiar with the name?  How about these tunes?

La La La Feat. Sam Smith - Naughty Boy

Latch Feat. Sam Smith - Disclosure

Now, let's look forward to greater tunes from him in the coming year,

and let's hope he will be bigger than Tom Odell too!

Loving the mid-week Top 5,

it's about time for some exciting new songs too!

Neon Jungle are a British four-piece girl group,

they are best known for their debut single, Trouble,

which peaked at number 12 in Sep last year.

I wonder if Little Mix should be afraid, very afraid,

Speaking of Boy George. Who can forget this gem - Bow Down Mister.

I've always like Sophie's songs. From groovejet till her last the smaller hits like Take Me Home.

Hey GW, Sophie Ellis-Bextor's back in the UK Singles Chart at #36 this week!!!

Young Blood - Sophie Ellis-Bextor

cd_de_sophie_ellis-bextor_-_heartbreak_m

I still prefer her dance numbers,

and here's her 2009 collaboration with Freemasons, the English-Irish DJ band from Brighton, East Sussex, England...

Sophie!!! The first spin was a bit bleah but the song grew on me.

I think there could be a dance mix in the line for this song.

She's special to me because of her 70s-influenced disco style.

The latest is too serious for me. Tks SW.

Hmmm...she's grown skinnier.

This track grew on me too,

unfortunately I don't seem to be able to find other versions...

Btw, did you get to check out this former 2+ year old post?

This is the best Brit Pop music magazine ever (since Smash Hits that is)!

It's full of Brit Pop at its best (lotsa 80s stuff),

and little nuggets like this one here...

It's not every day you get to say you've sung with Jimmy Somerville,

but that's exactly what happened to one busker after he was surprised by the former Bronski Beat and Communards singer during an afternoon shift singing on a Berlin shopping street.

The unnamed musician was performing Bronski's hit Smalltown Boy when Somerville suddenly appeared beside him, walking his dog.

The Scottish singer immediately joined in with the song, leaving the busker speechless!

No where can you get to watch clips like this one, but Classic Pop!

Luv the little clip of Jimmy Sommerville and busker. That's priceless.

When I was in Sec school, I didn't like falsetto singing and especially Sommerville's singing until my friend showed me Small Town Boy's lyrics. It all became so clear and I've been fan of Sommerville's songs then.

Back to Brit Got Talent.

Lumintes' Do Something. There's this star quality about the members...

The Human League emerged champion at the top of The Top 100 singles of the 1980s countdown,

anybody know which track that is?

No, it's not this one,

actually I don't recall seeing this video before...

What's interesting to note though is that Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder's classic is back inside the Top 40 @ #38,

as it's currently being featured as the soundtrack to the latest EDF Energy TV ad campaign...

Here's a lesser known song by the duo who brought us one of the classic 80s anthem...

Good-Bye Bad Times - Phil Oakey & Giorgio Moroder (#44 in Jun 1985)

Top 100 singles of the 80s...

The number 1 is what the 80s is about but I prefer the number 2 song.

Number 2 was such a monster hit then.

Alrightie, for those of you who couldn't get your hands on this excellent magazine,

the top 2 singles we were referring to are:-

#1 Don't You Want Me - The Human League (#1 in Dec 1981)

#2 Two Tribes - Frankie Goes To Hollywood (#1 in Jun 1984)

Gabrielle - Out of reach

emo nemo now :(

Listened Gabrielle in 2000 trying to get over a crush.

Big Mistake.

Although her songs were beautiful, those that I listened to were depressing.

Should I Stay

The other song is Over You. Heart bled when I listened to it then. Now it's lol.

Can't find it on Youtube though...

FGTH

This was a monster hit then.

There were at least 2 versions of the songs.
When it was banned in 1983, I remember Holly Johnson said the song was about telling people to chill and nothing about sex.

But actually it is and was about sex. The notoriety sent the song back to the charts once at number 1 and a second time at number 2.

Sex!  Politics!  Religion!

That sums up Frankie Goes To Hollywood!

The Power Of Love - Frankie Goes To Hollywood
(#1 in 1984, #10 in 1993, #6 in 2000)

The Power of Love is the third single from Frankie Goes to Hollywood, following its two predecessors, Relax and Two Tribes, to the top of the UK singles chart, scoring the band an early December number-one, being pipped at the post by Band Aid for Christmas chart topper.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood!
Jennifer Rush's 'The Power of Love' was superb, but Frankie's divine.

Happy Valentine's Day fellow members,

do you have a favourite love song from any of the UK acts?
