You guys can consider a Bamboo series from Wacom. It is a lower end model for casual sketching. Because Intuos is the series that is geared towards professionals and art students

Bamboo primarily has half the sensitivity and pressure of a Intuos series. But it still works well :D There's even a "Bamboo Manga" model now

Best is that you guys go try the tablets out during IT show or something XD I myself never bought one though even though I want it badly >_<

Did a quick doodle after i saw this thread. I love drawing faces :D Pardon the messy lines with pen

OMGOSH i dono why the image is so big -_-;; Sorry 8D

When I was in Interaction Design, one of our Studio Project (which is basically exams for designers) is Exquisite Corpse.

They are a type of collaborative artwork:

ExquisiteCorpse8_large.jpg

corpse_450.jpg

It can be of any medium as long as it fit what the other artist draws.

Yep but the rule is the artwork on the extreme top/bottom or left/right need to be able to be continues for 1 side, while 2 side for the middle. More examples:

lol. Well, I don't mind doing a collaborative art if someone can give a good idea on it. As I mostly do 3D modelling, I can only do things like add smokey effects with my Maya or model a 3D character so i'm most probably useless lol. Unless it's a video. Which isn't what we're striving.

Hey Simmon, can I see your 3D Work? Hahahaha.

I have 2 3D Work but I don't feel like showing. hahaha. You go first. :P :P :P

LOL! I won't be showing anytime soon lol. I suck at it. The animation was horrible. Please don't ask me to show until I actually improve. Right now my work is horrible.

lol modeling a face and animating a face are 2 different things XD

I agree with you. You can model a nice character. Then when you add the skinning and texturing, maybe it will not be as good looking. Perfect that then try to animate it. Animation is tough to make realistic. Then try facial expressions. If I can do something like that lady, i'd do interviews all day long =P

Ok. I'll show what I have saved on my desktop. Just 2 of it.

This one is a low poly model so it's not very clear. It's supposed to be a moogle. But I was so lazy, I painted its clothings on lol. Please ignore the background.

10pwti1.jpg

This one is just some crappy flowering thing I did cause I was bored but still, rendered in Maya LOL. It is 3D but looks like an oil painting. No lighting was used in this one.

I take it you just learn 3D? And you only learning Maya? Mind sharing with us what course you are in?

Don't worry, my year 1 work 4 years ago looked way more horrible. lol

Usually to make a picture look nice you need to have a Beauty pass, and at least an Ambient Occlusion pass (and edit them together on Photoshop). Sometimes I uses Diffuse pass too. If you don't have any light source you manually put in the scene, you should render with mental ray with Global Illumination and Final Gathering.

Yea, actually that's not even my main course lol. I'm a computer science student focusing on networking. But my classmate who is in games design sort of cajoled me into doing this so I did.

I don't really know how to use it to make it pretty and I definitely do not know any of those things you just mentioned LOL

Edit: I do know mental ray. That's all.

I don't claim to be good in 3D, in fact I am one of the weakest in 3D in my class but this is one of my work that shows how to make render look nicer:

3d__hummer_x5_mop_by_beeto456-d5gn8w9.jpg

So you have to render the 3 image out (Beauty aka Base, Diffuse, AO) and then use Photoshop, put the Diffuse and AO on top of Beauty, then use things like Multiply or Soft Light and adjust them accordingly until the picture look desirable.

Our lecturer show us this tutorial to learn how to make picture look nicer:

Oh for animation what I do is do the same thing but render out in Image Sequence (a bunch of PNG/TIFF image files), 1 set as Beauty and another in AO then do the same thing that I would do in Photoshop in After Effects. After Effects can take in Image Sequence.

Advantage of Image Sequence is that compared to AVI or other video format (or via Playblast), the quality is still kept and not compressed as much.

And thanks, I don't get the smooth part, you mean the orange bucket? Yeah I just use Smooth Edge, it is actually pretty low poly.

Oh okay. lol. Since you guys showing your 3D stuff- I guess I should too. xD

I took my 3D Class last semester and it's my first time modeling stuff. I think it was the most stressful module last semester as I completely had now idea how it worked. Haha. We were trained to use 3DS Max, not Maya. Most of my classmates that had experience were from Maya. :D

I don't really like them though. My character design sucks for the Character. LOL.

I'm still learnign 3d Animation this current module. (I swear, it's so stressful compared to 2d Animation.)

HEY! If yours sucks I guess I know what you think of mine lol. They are great!

I am so glad this is not my specialization. I don't mind doing it as a past time but if my grades depend on it, I am going to die.

I don't know about that. Would have to keep learning I guess.... and I meant the white rim and wheels. They have sharp angles. I thought you'd want it to be smooth. But I guess you do not have enough subDs

Hahaha I guess I am too used to low poly, anyway my boss doesn't mind (I did this during internship) since they can tell it is 3D and not real.

I totally understand you lol, I was from Interaction Design where we use 3ds Max and then when I transfer to Games they use Maya. Now I forgot 3ds Max already. lol

I like your sassy character lolz. Animation and rigging is a nightmare, our final assignment was to rig the assassin guy from Assassin's Creed 1. It's so stupid cuz his "skirt" is a dynamic and not meant for rigging. Everyone's work in class look so horrible, some didn't even finish!

I have tried nCloth by myself and made a cloth that behaved with the wind. It seemed alright. Is it difficult to put a nCloth and a poly together?

Omg I totally have no idea cuz we don't cover this. I suppose only the Animation course students would know. Either that or our class high leveled students (which we address them as Maya Gods, get the pun? LOL) would know XD

LOL. A lot of us cheated for this character rig. The work we were supposed to do was to rig the character completely and paint weights for all the action. What most of us did was pose the character even if we haven't painted the weights, and the paint the weights after the pose was done.

Don't know if you get what I'm trying to say. Hahaha. But~ Anyways.

Merlinkun, you planning to go Uni or what after you graduate? or? :D

Hahaha... We exactly did this also and just started to skin and rig when we're asked to animate already. XD

Hahaha totally understand. Weight painting takes a lot of time. Oh the horror.

Yeah I am planning to go NTU Interactive Media course as you can specialize into either Games or Art (which I guess is more interactive installation, web design, etc), since I am from a game course naturally I will want to go to Games.

Some ask me why not Lasalle or DigiPen, Lasalle is cuz it is more ex and it doesn't have any interactive media course and DigiPen cuz my portfolio is not enough to get into their Game Arts course.

I like NTU cuz my older brother was from there and there is a lot of theory classes like Art History :D

Anyone do Life Drawing?

I do a bit in my year 1 class, it was horrible as I suck at still life, especially human figures lol, my best work from the life drawing class was a bunch of fruits LOLOLOLOL

Go Digipen la~~~~ hahahaha. Then you can be my junior. :P

Anyways. Just suggesting- you should take the Digital Arts & Animation course for digipen. Game design courses usually have programming involved. But since you seem to be more enthu into arts, taking the BFA course would be better. :)

And the standards for portfolio for admissions isn't so high. :))

But your improvement rate will be superb. The lecturers in here are really good and help you alot with one on one consultations.

Just be prepared to say farewell to your social life since it's really tough. :)

But youll generally touch everything related to arts and the assets used for games. 2d 3d lol.

This considering that you are fine with the school's tuition atleast. :)))

Their portfolio requirement: 10 life drawing. *faint*

OMG awesome stuffs!!! I like arts and crafts. So embarrassing to show my shabby, primitive work.

What kind of craft work do you do? I do appreciate people who are good at making objects from seashells and stuff hahaha
