Hi guys

Given the ridiculous price of cars in Singapore, is it cheaper to travel by cabs?

How many of you existing car owners will not be buying new cars once you current car life span is up ?

Also on cabs, one of my concern is that when u board cabs, some taxi drivers will keep chatting with you. How do you avoid such situations? Sometimes I just don't want to talk to them when I am tired...

Car ownership in Singapore is for status showing off rather than a practical investment. True some people might need it in their line of work but very few fall into this category.

I don't dare to drive because of bad memories and accidents in the past. So cab for me or Mrt.

Don't want to talk to cabbies just don't smile and made eye contact with them and close your eye throughout the journey, though I wouldn't encourage people to do it. A small chat and some kindness really brighten up everyone day.

When you look at the price of the cars and the COE..... taking a cab is "cheaper" depending on your pattern of travels.

I take public transport whenever I can but I don't hesitate to flag a cab when in a hurry or when I'm lazy to walk or whatever. It has its cons, like rush hours, ERPs and stuff but all in all, I'm quite sure it's not as exp as owning a car....

And thinking about parking it.... yuck

Especially that, if I had a car, i would get a nice one (not a luxury or sports car) and not a simple tiny Hyundai, if you see what I mean. It would cost a bomb here.

As for chatty drivers, I just reply with one or two words, they usually get it.

Being an owner of a vehicle before all i can say is now i feel that travelling around in a cab is way a lot cheaper, cause you wont need to worry about having a hard time finding a parking lot/traffic offences/paying monthly season parking charges and most importantly vehicle maintanence that can blow a hole in your pocket

cheaper by cab and also, on normal days, usually u wont take taxi for every trip right? so u save alot.

driving is more convenient, save alot of time and u can move your stuff around different location easily. can go jalan jalan with ur frens, dates and ONS late at night, can use car for quickie etc.

i can reach my workplace 15mins by car but 1hr 10 mins by bus/mrt.....isnt that sickening???

driving is not for status, only ppl who think so because they are what they said or they are envious of others w cars.

The depreciation and ownership cost of a average Japan make car is much more than if you take cab most of the time.

I have a car, and I can't imagine not having one!!!! I take cabs to and fro from work, or when I am out drinking, but everywhere else I drive. It is the feeling of having freedom and not relying in someone else I guess.

Posted

Usually I take the train out and cab back if I hangout with my friends till late. This way the cab expenses don't appear so hefty, I get to hang out late and it is usually easier to hail a cab in the late hours of the evening. :-)

Posted

With the anti car ownership policy in place, it doesn't make sense to buy a car even if you can afford it. Cab is sensibly cheaper and hassle free option.

I agree. But try hailing a cab in little India on Friday night with 10 grocery bags!!!!!!

Going by your beliefs then I am guilty of what I say of others then haha.

No offence.

This disprencay in beliefs actually lies in difference in values system.

Just as I find people hook to the ideas of materialism I'm sure there are others who find me having a sour grape attitude. :)

No right or wrong. It's all just opinion.

I merely do not see the value of spending money here where things are artificially jack up or prop up by an unsustainable economy.

Have a heart. Look at things from their perspective, driving around all day negotiating street after street, more than boring. Wouldnt it be nice to just be able to talk with someone? Of course if you are tired, you are entitled to have some peace and quiet too. If you mumble some response and answer half heartedly with a tired smile eyes half closed, I think the taxi driver will get the message, without being offended.

How about renting a car once in awhile (say a year) for picnic with family and going outback where public trasnport dont go ?

With high crude oil prices comes high public/private transport cost. Please remember to hedge it.

Please la. Our cost of public transport has nothing to do with oil prices. Oil prices dropped already, our cost of public transport still went up. Stop kidding yourself. The rest of us all know better.

Car over cab anytime. Mrt over cab anytime. Cab only wins over the bus. I got my car my first car much much later than many of my friends as I wanted to be sure I could afford it. This means that I used take public tpt all the time for many many many yrs. I choose car purely because of convenience and because I m a control freak. I like to be in control of my schedule. Sometimes a jam happens and that screws up my plans but overall I have a lot more control of my time and schedule by driving. Having my own car also gives me immeasurable convenience. I can go anywhere anytime, I don't have to worry about lugging around bags as everything is left in d car. I also love it when I can make life a little bit more convenient for family and friends by driving them around for errands or lending them my car.

Having a car is a whole lot more expensive than if I were to take a cab everyday everywhere for 365 days a year. But since I rarely ever feel a need to go shopping, the car is where my money goes to, and to me it's money well spent.

See if u want to spend ur money on a car. Some pple even they have the money to buy n maintain a car but they wld rather use the money on other things. There is no right or wrong to choose btw car or cab, all depends on ur needs n wants.

Anyway, i find car more convenience if u want to go to mulitple places within a day, or buy many stuffs after ur shopping. Cos cab is not always there for u if u want them.

hmm... having a car would be a great convenience, but maybe in singapore its not really a neccessity? our public transport system's pretty efficient? most buildings and living estates aren't that far apart, shopping centers, markets are built in close proximity to living estates. i guess not as much of a need unlike in the US, you really need one to get around... don't you think?

Posted

Because of my tuition fees and study loans back then, my family had to sell away the car to afford my education.

Nowadays, I don't even think of spending on a car although the benefits of shopping, convenience attract me.

I just dial for cab as and when I need it to travel if I am late or public transport is unavailable. Long term wise still cheaper than owning a car.

If you own a typical 1.6 Japanese make, your total depreciation and cost per month easily amounts to $3000.

If you take cab all the time, the most you spend on fares is under $2000 and remember there are 28 000 cabs serving you island wide.

Posted

I cab sometimes if I want to arrive at my destination in tip top condition, especially for meetings. The public transport somehow drains my energy away. Lol.

Posted

Probably cars on the weekend i.e. weekend cars and cabs on the weekdays (if I'm late or something).

Otherwise, I enjoy taking public transport (trains over buses).

Unless your job requires to drive or you have too much money to spare (please continue to spend  -  to boost the economy), else the MRT and buses are good enough.

Cabs aren't really that cheap, if you travel heavily by that. Of course, you need not worry about parking space / charges etc...

You have to weigh: need VS want, then you decide if getting a car or hailing a cab is more pratical.

Because it is enjoyable taking public transport overseas.

When I lived in Brisbane I had a 90 minute train commute to my office at the southern end of the Gold Coast. Each way, every day. Yet I enjoyed it. Trains were not overcrowded. I had a nice seat, could take out my laptop and get some productive work done. Granted this was only so because I was travelling against the flow of commuter traffic - most people live on the Gold Coast and work in Brisbane, for me it was the other way around.

At the current rate, it is still cheaper to take taxi two ways every day than owning a car.

Go read the latest copy of Torque Magazine on article called Car vs Cab equilibrium. It provides a comprehensive study of the subject.

Ya.. Where to find that article.

Owning a car in singapore is really a luxury. I think people who own cars currently but with COE ending soon will usually think twice ?

In fact there are friends who tell me they will give up cars once their COE expires..

On this topic.. Guys who own cars care to share your average monthly salary ?

Car for me.....just too used to driving everywhere that it is hard to consider not having one.

Save on other things like not going clubbing, not drinking, not paying for sex, etc......

Car or cab also depends whether u like to drive or not, as driving here quite stressful. Many times there are many reckless drivers, and u might get into accident due to these pple for nothing. If take public transport, u no need to go thru the trouble of filing and fighting for ur accident claim.

There were occasions that I took the public transport, such as this weekend's PC Show (or IT Show, COMEX, SITEX for that matter), as there would be heavy traffic everywhere - human and vehicle. But everytime I would end up "treasuring" the car...

Like just now on the home, taking MRT was fine, but when waiting for the feeder bus (I suppose most people would need to take a feeder bus home), it was really torturing. It was a long wait of about 20-25 minutes (maybe more as I didn't take note of the time) and I saw one particular non-feeder bus came three times and left, another non-feeder bus came twice and left, before my feeder bus finally came.

For the very least, if you are in the car, you are seated comfortably with the air-con, hence, it was quite a long wait at the bus stop - and the hot, humid weather didn't make the wait any better...

Happy - is what we should be, always.

Cab all the way.

I have a feeling I will kill someone on the road accidentally if I drive.

So I let others take the wheel and remain guilt free.

I just don't like to drive.I like to sleep or watch the scenery while on the journey.

Knocking down someone in this country is not a laughing matter to me.

Rite, if u dun like to drive n like to be driven ard, and no motion sickness. It is better to sit back and relax in the car. Getting involve in an accident, esp if u r at fault is not something u want to go thru.

I think this is very subjective. Depends on what u need and how u see things.

For me to travel from Bedok to bukit batok every day to n fro by cab during peak hour can cost me min $50 per day. A full tank of petrol after disc cost me $96 which last me 1week. So $96 petrol vs $350 (50 x 7) cab fare per week.

Now u tell me which is cheaper?

Posted (edited)

I can afford a car anytime but I rather choose cab, Then its cab over public transport because I like my own space and privacy, and I hate over crowded places

One thing if you were to look at cars this way. No matter how much you pay for a car here and thinks that it is your's..

Sorry, it was never yours to be be since day one when  your paid the deposit and signed the papers

If you were to look at the 10 year COE scheme?  To translate into a simpler terms, it means you merely RENT the car from the government for merely 10 years. When the 10 years is up and should you want to extend " owning " the car, you have to pay another premium rental lease for your it

With all the money "invested " in a car here 10 years, including taxes, maintenance , petrol ERP etc..... you might as well invest in a condo or a private property

Btw.......in USA Toyota Family car 1600 to 1800cc range, the manufacture cost price is about..USD 2000. Each of your car doors cost USD 80, and a tyre  cost you USD 40.

Still got cost of the car - depreciation? And also road tax, insurance, parking, ERP blah blah blah....

Add up I think a car cost more

Driving can be relaxing, like along UK's countryside or US' desert highway, but somehow I feel quite stressed driving in Sg.

If the car price is much lower, I'll probably get a car.

In the meantime, it's cab or public transport.

Regarding talking with cab drivers, I guess I'm the odd one as I quite enjoy talking with them.

Maybe I was influenced by some books: I think there's a message to be communicated or something to be learned whenever 2 people meet.

In addition, some cabbies are tired and talking keeps them alert, so, it's safer for both of us.

If I'm too tired or I don't feel like talking, I'd let the driver know I'm taking a nap and to wake me when we reach the destination or I'll take out my MP3 player.

After all, tomorrow is another day. ~ S O'Hara

Hmm.. I think taxis are a wise choice ? Confirmed to be cheaper than cars... Probably half the cost of owning a car?

You need not drive as well...better

Posted

Depends on ur distance, the timing and how often u take the taxi. Not necessary cheap to take taxi, esp during the peak hrs.
