I just saw a post by Darkflame on Uniqlo.

I noticed I am shopping a lot at Uniqlo for T-shirts, Biz Shirt, socks, suits and underwear. Is it just me ?

For my casual wear shopping dollars, brands like Hangten, Giodarno, G2000 has totally loss out.

No, I don't think it is just you.

It is in fact a global phenomenon, and I think was mentioned by NYT as to Uniqlo's success. Uniqlo has managed to occupy a lower price point whilst offering relatively high quality stuff and design, giving it a unique yet strong position in the market.

Posted

I think it was cheaper before, but getting expensive i think.

I only use basic items like jeans and white v neck t shirts.

Posted

I love certain uniqlo products but yeah, the chance of seeing someone in the same clothes is high.

Ironically, Uniqlo has become so ubiquitous that it has kinda lost its original meaning i.e. Unique Clothing.

The only time I think it does produce some unique stuff is under their UT Collection line.

Since MUJI is relatively competitive with Uniqlo in Japan, I prefer to get MUJI these days due to its nice collection of pastel colours.

Currently Uniqlo has an even cheaper line of clothing called GU. Those who have been to Japan or Taiwan would know it.

Am curious to know how much market share can GU take it if enters Singapore.

Just avoid the slogan T-shirts and stick to the basics. Solid color Ts, polis, chinos and shorts. The good thing about their polos is that they don't emblazon a logo across the left breast.

Haven't been to Japan or Taiwan for a long time, is GU's quality comparable to Uniqlo?

At least I think Uniqlo has a bit of standard for the Polo tee-shirt quality and jeans

i have to agree that uniqlo's quality is better than H&M and now zara.

i had stopped buying zara for quite sometime as i find the quality doesnt match the price tag anymore. used to be ok but now terrible

Depends on the item. Their polo tees, tees & thicker denim jeans are fine and sturdy. They maintain their shape well. Avoid their legging jeans, chinos & berms! These fades obviously and expands only after a few washes. Worse, the fabrics are so loosely woven and stitched that the ass line of their chinos will part if you choose to wear it tighter, potentially exposing your underwear color! Another item to avoid are their merino wool sweaters. These are so thin and flimsy, the wool balls up with the slightest friction and you will be constantly shaving it to maintain the newness and it runs the risk of tearing and splitting up. Also, most of their blazers look boxy. This flies against you if you want the fitted look.

Only their slogan tees are of acceptable quality. Their plains tees expand easily.

H&m has plenty of items that are of much better quality - both design and workmenship wise - than uniqlo's. You just need to have an eye for them.

Many of Zara's tees and shirts are of poor quality in terms of fabric and workmanship. Their accesories are also bad in workmanship. Their fragrances are fine, with much choice. Their trousers, jeans, shoes, blazers, jackets and winterwear are comparatively better made.

I wanna get a pair of their skinny jeans. :)

I have a few of their sweaters. Not too expensive and it serves my purpose. For that price, cannot expect too much.

wafflecorn, u must be a student

anyone who is a fresh grad (close to a student) should not spend too much

UNiqlo is a gd choice esp for the basics and is cheap

Truly agree w Darkflame, the old UT line of uniqlo was so much better and at a cheap pricing, if  u r at eg harajuku, they have specific to that outlet/area's designs (no way u can get it in sg or somewhere else) , and very like it is made of Japan cotton/material (very different from the usual batch)

that was why I felt good purchasing the old range ( I do not blame anyone for not knowing the "history" of uniqlo, but it is a fact)

NOW I feel lousy just to let my eyes scan thru their merchandise at the entrance and fled away like seeing a fashion crime......

tourists at Ginza snatched the items as though uniqlo is having a 75% sales!! join them if u luv uniqlo

Let s NOT bother w GU (how many get to go Japan)

focus on Minisou for our discussion, some bw mbrs commented that they get high buying cheap stuff (just like daiso pricing) at the Minisou (which recently arrived at sg), it was REALLY nothing too unique or too worthy for attention

cheap may not last...

Like some of u showing the spirit of kiasu sporean, I snatched and yeow-kwee over the cheap and so-attractive merchandise of Flying Tiger / pritemps from Copenhagen in japan, after I returned some of the items may not last, battery became weak aftr a night etc issues....

High time for gays who r fussy w the looks of their bf/husbd to have discerning power in selecting merchandise and esp clothing

Sg is definitely a boring place in terms of men's fashion (from working adults onwds, I do not expect students to spend)
easily, Bangkok designers do a good job!

To end this,

while Muji is definitely of quality but its too-basic and too-earth-colour just............good try dark flame

it s non-clothing items are good for sure!

I nearly fainted when the ladies who went jp w me screamed and yelled excitedly when they saw Gap or zara, I questioned them don't Hongkong or Sg have zara/ GAP outlets, why must we spend effort shopping for things available at sg?
(but do note that GAP is so much cheaper in USA and H&M has so much variety in USA too, that deserved our attention)
Time is money and it s time to shake up the fashion scene of sg

Sorry for the naggy long-winded insightful sharing

I realise that 70% of my cupboard is filled with uniqlo's item. *JENG JENG JENG*

I love their basic solid coloured tshirts esp the quick-dry ones and polos. But I do notice that the material of their solid coloured tshirts have become thinner over the years. So I avoided their light coloured ones otherwise you can see your nipples poking out from them.

That awkward moment when you say goodbye and then walk in the same direction...

Uniqlo needs to maintain its quality.Getting too commodity.

good point!

Even Apple has to start advertising on local TV to maintain their brand and product appeal. Uniqlo watch out.

Beauty is the eye of the beholder.

Most of us wear clothes for practical reasons and of course, the pricing.

What do you expect from mass-production?

So don't be condescending here...

Buying from uniqlo increases the odds of seeing another person wearing the same shirt or pants like you :P

buy from oversea store, most of the shorts and tee I bought from Taiwan cannot be found here....bkk suppose to have the largest uniqlo store in asia beside japan but unfortunately i came out empty handed....uniqlo is very ambitious with the aim to become the world's largest clothing retailer by 2020....

Nipples poking out of cloth is sexy if you got enough meat on your chest and a flat abs. I like those Uniqlo small size and tight fitting ones. Giodano muscle fit tees i also like as both of their material is soft and comfortable and make me much more attractive sexually lol.

Just to share an experience....I bought a pair of slippers from uniqlo in bugis+ when the pair of sandals which I was wearing gave way. It was more expensive than the usual slippers you can buy from the market...it cost about $9...(not so sure). But as it turned out, it was one of the best slippers i have bought and worn. It lasted for many years....I am still wearing it altho' it has gone thru wear and tear and it is not as sturdy as before. The surprising thing is that Uniqlo no longer sells slippers...wonder why is it so?

I like uniqlo winter wear....i bought the winter wear before making my first visit to Japan during winter. These winter clothes protected me from the cold...so it is indeed worth the money and time spent in getting them in Singapore.

Uniqlo has also become a sports brand...tennis to be exact....one of the top tennis players is wearing Uniqlo sports attire.

I also like to wear their Dry ex polo tees which cost $29.90 (usual) but for $19.90 (sale).

We had a meeting where half the group at the table were in Uniqlo shirts as the group went for a shopping holiday together.

I usually buy my clothing from Timberland, but the ankle socks I bought from Giodano no longer stock ankle length ones, so I started looking around for ankle socks, and a colleague recommended Uniqlo. That's all I've bought from Uniqlo so far. xD

Bought only 3 pairs, but they have many designs! So nice. xD

Not sure this is a valid criticism. Remember when Giordano was so popular that people everywhere were wearing their polo t-shirts (with collar turned up)? Nowadays the same could be said about Topman, A&F, and so on too. With any low/mid-priced mass-market label, you're bound to see many other people wearing the same clothing.

What I like from Uniqlo: plain (t-)shirts and shorts/pants in solid colors without visible branding, usually constructed from very comfortable and practical fabrics.

All of u like the sizes provided by uniqlo underwear? they seemed to start from an M size

Surprisingly, many men can squeeze in an xS, or S

my friend who is slim cannot endure having even a Medium "toot" underwear from japan, he needs an L , but uniqlo's is definitely much more roomier

For all those who love uniqlo's underwear is definitely not the thin type, u must be w beefier legs or....

In fact, it was a shock that why Uniqlo doesn't have an S size

Just for some who are yeow kwee with the latest Minosou 's undies, they start w Large size

Too many shops everywhere.

Uniqlo is in almost every shopping mall thats why it is losing its appeal and uniqueness. Thats the problem with these retail shops.

Posted

They are too greedy and dumb. Now they're selling here most,y to the PRCs, making it even less appealing for locals. Now this brand is as unique as the PRCs and uncles roaming chinatown.

I like UNIQLO Airisim underwear.

I love their Airism tops, and would wear them as my only layer sometimes due to our hot climate.

While many has said the designs are getting worse, I would say for each his own.

The thing about Muji is that their cuttings are too wide for me. It's not about size but more for cutting. And with Uniqlo, the S size fits me well.

Sometimes it's not about the designs, especially for people of a certain age (can't be wearing Monster Hunter printed tees forever), but how it accentuates the bulges, curves and form of the wearer.

For the Uniqlo fans, Singapore will get a Uniqlo flagship store at Orchard Central this year.

SINGAPORE: Japanese cheap-chic fashion brand Uniqlo will open its first global flagship store in Singapore and in the South-east Asia region "this autumn", according to a press release on Tuesday (Mar 29).

The new store, which will be the largest in Singapore and the region, will be located in Orchard Central, and will have a sales area of about 2,700 square metres across three levels in the mall, the company said.

Posted (edited)

15 years ago, I shopped in Uniqlo in Japan and Hong Kong because it was affordable.

Furthermore there was a lesser chance of wearing the same shirt as a colleague.

Now with such proliferation, I would not buy anything from them anymore.

Too much of the same thing in different malls -  a crisis if Singaporeans switch to a newer brand.

(Lesson learnt: Giordano was hip in the early 80s.  It was the trendy to be spotted with that frog logo.  See what it is now ... offering clothes at 50% every now and then).

These clothing companies fail to understand supply vs demand?  Where is that exclusivity?

Perhaps they ignore the fact that cheaper (and sometimes rarer) clothes are available across the Causeway.

Now, Singaporeans are so travel-savvy.

I have seen Singaporeans "sapu" Platinum clothes like there is no tomorrow..

That shirt in my avatar cost SGD 13...bought in JB six months ago.

Cheap and pretty unique design.

It's cotton.

The sad thing to me with all these global brands is they take the fun out of shopping when travelling overseas. When I was growing up, I remember relatives would travel to London to get Burberry or even stuff from M&S that we do not get in Singapore. Paris, to go to shop in Printemps, Galeries Lafayette (though both stores did open up in Singapore for a period of time in the 80s, or Tati.

Now, no matter where you go, you see the same stores with the same stuff more or less in every major city. Zara, H&M, Uniqlo, Top Shop, Starbucks, MacDonald's... I guess globalisation is good for business.

Uniqlo has good jeans. I buy and wear them for my daily work wear.

Love.
