I don't get it. Why would a pair of Chinese nationals (Case 8 and 9) from Wuhan arrive on 19 Jan,  and then go visit a church for no reasons, especially when they are not even known to the church? Since when did THE LIFE CHURCH AND MISSIONS become a tourist attraction? And the population of Christians in China only account to about 5% or so of the population. This sounds so weird to me...

5% of China population is way too many times of the Christian in SG,  but it should be personal visit because china tour group normally only visit Indian temple as part of their itinerary....umm,  would that be how the blangadesh worker got infected.

Bangladeshis are 97% Muslim and wouldn’t visit any Indian (Tamil) temple.

There are plenty of PRC tourists and others at Mustafa because it has near to everything....

https://www.nst.com.my/world/world/2020/02/563609/latest-coronavirus-study-implicates-faecal-transmission

WASHINGTON: Diarrhoea may be a secondary path of transmission for the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), scientists said on Friday following the publication of the latest study reporting patients with abdominal symptoms and loose stool.

The primary path is believed to be virus-laden droplets from an infected person’s cough, though researchers in early cases have said they focused heavily on patients with respiratory symptoms and may have overlooked those linked to the digestive tract.

A total of 14 out of 138 patients (10 per cent) in a Wuhan hospital who were studied in the new paper by Chinese authors in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) initially presented with diarrhoea and nausea one or two days prior to development of fever and laboured breathing.

The first US patient diagnosed with 2019-nCoV also experienced loose bowel movements for two days and the virus was subsequently detected in his stool, and there have been other such cases in China documented in the Lancet, albeit infrequently.

“Importantly, 2019-nCoV has been reported elsewhere in the faeces of patients with atypical abdominal symptoms, similar to SARS which was also shed in urine, suggesting a faecal transmission route which is highly transmissible,” William Keevil, a professor of environmental healthcare at the University of Southampton said in a comment to the UK’s Science Media Centre.

The possibility is not totally surprising to scientists, given that the new virus belongs to the same family as SARS.

Faecal transmission of SARS was implicated in sickening hundreds in Hong Kong’s Amoy Gardens housing estate in 2003. A rising plume of warm air originating in bathrooms contaminated several apartments and was transported by wind to adjacent buildings in the complex.

Based on the literature, “The 2019-nCoV virus found in stool may be transmitted through faecal spread,” added Jiayu Liao, a bioengineer at the University of California, Riverside.

But, he added, “We still do not know how long this virus can survive outside the body – HIV can only survive roughly 30 minutes outside the body – and what temperature range the 2019-nCoV is sensitive to.”

Faecal spread could present new challenges to the virus’s containment, but is more likely to be a problem inside hospitals, which can become “amplifiers” of epidemics, said David Fisman, an epidemiologist at the University of Toronto.

Benjamin Neuman, a virology expert at Texas A&M University-Texarkana, cautioned that while faecal transmission was “certainly worth considering,” “droplets and touching contaminated surfaces then rubbing eyes, nose or mouth” were likely the main way the virus was transmitted based on current data. -  AFP

Chinese Officials Confirm Coronavirus Is Airborne Disease

Chinese health officials confirmed that the deadly novel coronavirus can be spread through the air, according to a Shanghai press conference on Feb. 8.

The virus, which causes a respiratory illness, has infected at least tens of thousands and stirred concern worldwide.

The officials said the virus can be spread through aerosol transmission, that is, when one inhales very tiny droplets in the air containing the virus. Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), measles, and H5N1 avian influenza are also capable of spreading through aerosols, which can stay in the air for an extended period.

The UK government also recently classified the new virus as an “airborne high consequence infectious disease,” meaning that it can be spread through respiratory droplets, according to a government webpage about the virus.

The other two major transmission routes for the virus include direct contact—breathing in larger droplets at close range of an infected person who sneezes or coughs—and contact transmission, meaning a person can be infected by touching objects contaminated with droplets carrying the virus, and then touching the membranes of his mouth, nose, or eyes before washing his hands, Chinese officials said.

Depending on the environment, current scientific data suggests the coronavirus can survive on surfaces for several hours or up to five days, Jiang Rongmeng, an expert from China’s top health oversight agency, the National Health Commission (NHC), said in a recent press conference

The findings came after Guangdong authorities discovered the nucleic acid of the virus on the doorknob of a patient’s home.

A number of Chinese cities, including the outbreak epicenter of Wuhan in Hubei Province; Xi’an in Shaanxi; Nanyang, Xuchang, and Kaifeng in Henan; Xingtai in Hebei; and Jiujiang in Guangdong, have deployed mist cannon trucks and street cleaning trucks to spray disinfectants on the streets in an effort to eliminate the virus from public spaces.

Shenzhen and Kunming in southern China were among the latest two locales to use drones for the disinfectant operation.

Zeng Qun, vice director for the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau, asked the public to cancel all social gatherings, open windows to ensure ventilation indoors, and regularly disinfect their homes. Zeng identified door handles, chairs, and toilet seat cushions as key areas that are susceptible to contamination and suggested using 75 percent ethanol solution or chlorine solution for sanitizing measures.

In a recent poll on the popular messaging platform WeChat, which drew 75,000 participants, around 62 percent indicated that they haven’t taken an elevator for more than a week, worrying that they could contract the virus by contacting the doorknob. For those who rode elevators, many chose to bring a pen, a toothpick, or a napkin, or wore gloves to avoid any direct contact.

Officials have also cautioned the family members of those infected to wear masks and keep a distance of at least one meter (3.2 ft.), as well as washing their hands immediately after touching anything exposed to the patient.

In a same-day news conference, China’s NHC announced that the virus will have a temporary name: novel coronavirus pneumonia, or NCP.

It remains uncertain whether the virus can spread through fecal contamination, a concern that arose after the feces of the first U.S. coronavirus patient tested positive to the virus.

Feng Luzhao, an infectious disease researcher with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said at the conference that it has also identified similar cases in several regions, which raised the question of whether the pathogens can spread through tainted food and water.

According to the NHC, the signs of infection include fever, fatigue, dry cough, and breathing difficulties, which can lead to pneumonia, kidney failure, and death.

However, some patients have reported atypical symptoms such as diarrhea, headache, palpitations, chest pain, eye inflammation, and muscle soreness.

OMG ... Japan had another 66 people found infected on the cruise ship, making their total infected count to be 156. https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/sixty-more-people-confirmed-with-coronavirus-on-cruise-ship-in-japan

At least 66 more people confirmed with coronavirus on cruise ship in Japan

UPDATED
F
TOKYO (BLOOMBERG, AFP) -

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases on a quarantined cruise ship off Japan almost doubled, bringing to 136 the number of infections in the biggest outbreak outside of China.

The operator of the cruise ship quarantined off Japan confirmed 66 more cases of the virus.

Japanese health officials had confirmed that among the new infections there were 45 Japanese nationals, 11 Americans, four Australians, three from the Philippines and one each from Britain, Canada and Ukraine, Princess Cruises said.

The increasing number of patients on Carnvial Corp's Diamond Princess has raised worries about a possible spread among the more than 3,600 people still aboard.

Risks have been mounting that the virus could spread in the confined spaces of the ship, where many on board have increased vulnerability due to their advanced ages.

The Diamond Princess has been in quarantine since arriving off the Japanese coast early last week after the new virus was detected in a former passenger who got off the ship last month in Hong Kong.

When the ship arrived off Japan, the authorities initially tested nearly 300 people on board for the virus, gradually evacuating dozens who tested positive to local medical facilities.

In recent days, testing has expanded to those who had close contact with other infected passengers or crew, and several more cases were reported over the weekend.

Those who remain on the ship have been asked to stay inside their cabins and allowed out only briefly onto open decks.

They have been asked to wear masks and keep a distance from each other when outside, and given thermometers to regularly monitor their temperatures.

The ship is expected to stay in quarantine until Feb 19 – 14 days after the isolation period began.

The quarantine has made life on board the ship difficult, particularly for those in windowless interior cabins and a significant number of passengers who require medication for various chronic conditions.

The health ministry said on Monday (Feb 10) that around 600 people on board were in urgent need of medications and around half received supplies over the weekend.

Sarawak enforces 14-day home quarantine rule for travellers from Singapore

Updated: 10 Feb 2020 07:20PM

KUCHING: With immediate effect, arrivals to Sarawak from Singapore will have to be quarantined for 14 days at home, State Disaster Management Committee chairman Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said on Monday (Feb 10).

The decision was made after Singapore raised its Disease Outbreak Response System Condition (DORSCON) level to Orange last Friday amid a global novel coronavirus outbreak. The country has 43 cases of the virus as of Sunday, including 22 locally transmitted cases.

This is even scarier. If all countries close down and disallow travellers from Singapore, then Red Dot is like a leprosy island...

In Malaysia or Thailand nobody has been running to the shops, people stayed calm there...

On the other hand Singapore is having a WHO investigation on the Hyatt corporate conference event just before CNY for keeping it under the carpet until the Brit guy was diagnosed in UK...who infected others in Europe. Few Mainland Chinese attended this event...and...

It’s clear, Singapore tried to avoid declaring a “community” spreading...

By the way: with the Dorncon Orange Singapore is pushing the duties to the private sector in coming up with measures to fight against the virus.

In short the current wuhan expert team have failed,  not only are they not able to contain the spreading but they had open up many doors and opportunitIes for a possible wide spread of the virus + lost of trust and confidence among the people resulting in hoarding of goods which was reported all over the world and we became  a laughing stock for the whole world. It doesn't matter these hoarders are local or not as it will just be just classified as spore.

And some idiots still can tell u don't hoard,  must show the world we are united so more countries have confidence and can create more jobs for the future.  Hello,  who care about the future if u cant even solve the problem now? Now,  where is my sars master?

'Super spreader' brought coronavirus from Singapore to Sussex via France

Three weeks ago, when knowledge of the coronavirus was still in its infancy, a middle-aged man from Hove, East Sussex, travelled to Singapore for a sales conference.

The event, organised by his firm, Servomex, was a chance to sharpen up sales skills and network with colleagues from other countries in the plush surrounds of the five-star Grand Hyatt hotel, where rooms can cost £1,000 a night.

The trip exposed the Sussex businessman to the Wuhan coronavirus and in the days after the conference it is believed he passed the bug to at least 11 Britons in three countries, prompting concerns about the danger posed by so-called super spreaders.

The unnamed man, the first Briton to have tested positive for coronavirus, attended the sales conference from 20 to 22 January. He was among 94 – out of a total of 109 – delegates who travelled from abroad. The foreign delegates included one from Wuhan, the Chinese city at the centre of the outbreak.

After the conference, the Briton travelled to the French ski resort of Les Contamines-Montjoie near Mont Blanc, where he stayed with his family between 24 and 28 January. He flew back to the UK on a busy easyJet flight from Geneva to Gatwick. Still oblivious to the fact he had the virus, which has a two-week incubation period, he returned home and on the evening of 1 February he visited a local pub, The Grenadier in Hove.

It was only after being informed by the conference organisers that another delegate had contracted the virus that he alerted the public health authorities and subsequently tested positive.

As protocol dictates, a scramble began to identify all those with whom he had been in contact, to ascertain whether they too had been infected. Five workers at The Grenadier were instructed to self-isolate. The man’s travels in the intervening period multiplied the number of people he had potentially infected, and cases linked to him began to emerge.

On Saturday the French health minister, Agnes Buzyn, said five British citizens including a nine-year-old child had tested positive for the coronavirus. They had stayed in a chalet in Les Contamines-Montjoie, which had been visited by the businessman from Hove. Buzyn said another six UK nationals were being kept under observation in French hospitals, and two schools the nine-year-old visited were being shut as a precaution.

On Sunday more cases linked to the businessman emerged. Public Health England (PHE) said another patient in the UK had tested positive after the virus was passed on in France from another already confirmed UK case. It was announced that a British man living in Mallorca, who had been in Les Contamines-Montjoie with his family until 29 January, had also tested positive.

On Monday it was confirmed that another four people in the UK – three men and a woman in Brighton – had tested positive for coronavirus. The chief medical officer, Prof Chris Whitty, said all were “known contacts of a previously confirmed UK case, and the virus was passed on in France”.

Dr Andrew Freedman, a reader in infectious diseases at Cardiff University, said: “This is not particularly surprising but it does appear that the index case has passed on the infection to an unusually large number of contacts. As such, he could be termed a super spreader.”

The Hove businessman is now in an isolation unit at St Thomas’ hospital in London, having been transferred from Brighton on Thursday. The effort to identify and – where necessary – isolate and test people who may have been in contact with him continues. Those potentially at risk include passengers who sat near him on flight EZS8481 from Geneva to Gatwick on 28 January.

Coronavirus Live Updates: The Illness Now Has a Name: COVID-19

World health authorities now have a name for the coronavirus illness.

The World Health Organization on Tuesday proposed an official name for the illness caused by the new coronavirus: COVID-19. The acronym stands for coronavirus disease 2019, as the illness was first detected toward the end of last year.

The director general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, noted that the new name makes no reference to any of the people, places or animals associated with the coronavirus. The goal was to avoid stigma.

Under international guidelines, the W.H.O. “had to find a name that did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, an individual or group of people, and which is also pronounceable and related to the disease,” he said on Twitter.

The death toll from the coronavirus epidemic is continuing to climb, Chinese officials said on Tuesday. Dr. Tedros said that 1,017 people had died from the coronavirus. The number of confirmed infections in China also grew, to at least 42,700 from about 40,000 a day earlier.

There are 393 COVID-19 cases abroad, in a total of 24 countries.

“With 99 percent of cases in China, this remains very much an emergency for that country, but one that holds a very grave threat for the rest of the world,” Dr. Tedros said.

Translation of news article in "zaobao"

Note: 我国 stands for our country = Singapore ; Names have been left without proper transfer into English

Experts refute that our country may become the second Wuhan: the number of confirmed cases is high because our country actively tracks cases

Recently, an article pointed out that the incidence rate in our country is nearly one in 100,000 of the population, which is equivalent to a Chinese city with a moderate epidemic. Liang Haonan, an infectious disease consultant at Elizabeth Novena Hospital, denied this statement in an interview. He noted that our country about half of the cases are imported from abroad, and more importantly, our country is careful and proactive in identifying potential cases.

Our country has confirmed that a new type of coronavirus has a confirmed population of nearly one in 100,000, and it may become the second Wuhan. The infectious disease experts interviewed refuted the fallacy and emphasized that the epidemic situation cannot be interpreted based on data alone. Our country's active follow-up of potential cases has led to a higher initial diagnosis.

New crown virus is raging in many countries, and the confirmed cases in various places have attracted much attention. A recent article pointed out that there are more than 40 cases in  our country's 5.7 million people, which means that the incidence rate is nearly one in 100,000, which is equivalent to a Chinese city with a moderate epidemic and may even become the second Wuhan.

Liang Haonan, an infectious disease consultant at Elizabeth Novena Hospital, denied this statement in an interview. He pointed out that about half of the cases in our country were imported from abroad, which is not surprising considering that Singapore's passenger flow is high and is popular with Chinese tourists.
Medical level affects severity

More importantly, through temperature detection and tracking of people who have been in close contact with patients, our country carefully identifies potential cases, and provides a daily isolation allowance of 100 yuan and free treatment to make patients willing to show up.

Liang Haonan said: "Although there will be more confirmed cases in the early stage of our country, the potential return is that daily cases will remain at a low level. Without this, although there are fewer initial cases, it will increase exponentially afterwards.

Professor Temayaya, president of the Asia-Pacific Association of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, also emphasized that our country and Wuhan cannot be directly compared.

Wuhan was caught off guard by the sudden outbreak, but our country is well prepared and has advanced medical facilities and virus detection kits.

Some websites also said that the death rate of about 0.2% outside Hubei should not be adopted because the epidemic has not fully spread in these places. In this regard, infectious disease experts agree that it takes two to three weeks for the new crown virus to infect and die, so mortality rates outside Hubei will lag behind.

However, it is not appropriate to take the mortality rate of nearly 3.0% in Hubei Province as that reflects the worst case. Liang Haonan said: "Everyone there is exhausted, and there is a shortage of medical services and insufficient equipment. This is unfair."

He pointed out that the level of medical care will directly affect the severity of the epidemic. For example, the survival rate of people infected with the Ebola virus in Atlanta, the United States, is 30% to 40% higher than in South Africa, and the survival rate of measles in industrial countries is also 30% to 40% higher than in non-industrial countries.

Temayaya said that our country can refer to the mortality rates in Zhejiang Province or Guangdong Province, which are the second wave of cases, and the level of development is closer to our country. Zhejiang Province and Guangdong Province had 1117 and 1177 cases as of yesterday, respectively. The former had no deaths and the latter had only one.

Just after the Lantern Festival (7th), our country raised the level of anti-epidemic alert to orange, but the "Uncle Faith Lantern Festival" party was still held that night in the Grand Palace in Luoyang, which caused some netizens to accuse the government of failing to learn the lessons of Wuhan Banquet .

However, it is reported that the number of people attending the meeting has dropped by more than half compared with the number of people in previous years. Temayaya said that the government's proposal to cancel or postpone large-scale events, rather than directly ban them, is to place the responsibility on the event organizers and trust the people to make wise decisions.

Liang Haonan also pointed out that there are tens of thousands of rallies in our country every day, but so far only three infected groups have shown that the probability of infection in crowded places is less than 0.01%. "It is easy for the government to ban, but it is difficult to maintain morale, so it is necessary to balance it."

Dr. Wanting Sun, a senior research fellow at the Singapore Policy Research Institute, said that with the increase in global cases and the deepening of medical experts' understanding of the virus, the government must continue to adjust the response, which indirectly makes the public feel high uncertainty.

Studies have shown that articles that evoke strong emotions such as fear, disgust, or anger are often effective in spreading, so articles that cause people's fear and anxiety can spread more easily and quickly after an outbreak.

Hong Zhengjun, a senior researcher at the National Centre for Excellence in National Security Research at Rajaratnam International Research Institute, pointed out that people will feel fear in crises, eager to obtain information and seek explanations, so they believe in conspiracy theories, and share the order because they want to protect the community.

Message of fear.
Social media speeds up this process because it is both a powerful tool for sharing information and prioritizing the display of sensational articles to increase user engagement.

Fake information is fabricated for different reasons. Some people may draw conclusions too hastily, others are for mischief. Sun Wanting said that people want to protect the people around them, and may also promote the spread of fake information, because their mentality is "careful is better than regret."

Hong Zhengjun believes that in order to counter this, in addition to government officials, some influential and respected people should remind the community, family and friends to stay calm. The public should also stop and think before sharing information that may cause panic or taking irrational action.

British prisoner with suspected coronavirus was ‘transferred from Thai jail’

https://metro.co.uk/2020/02/11/british-prisoner-suspected-coronavirus-transferred-thai-jail-12223773/

If this is true then its a lot more widespread in Thailand, undetected, untested, unreported.

I want to go indonesia now. There is zero cases in indonesia. I believe it is so because of indonesia's high level of medical practice and the population is very healthy.

You always hear people say 'in singapore, you can die but cannot get sick' because of the extremely high cost of getting sick .. but you never hear that in indonesia .... medical services is cheap amd effective ... taking care of its citizens. Thats why mighty Indonesia has zero cases.

Hello, is there some way to change this thread's subject heading to the newly-assigned WHO term, please?  This will remove the stigmatization to any city name. :)

Undetected if due to limited resources got nothing to say but if is due to economic consideration,  then that is very irresponsible just like indonesia, they evacuated Indonesians from wuhan but got no intention to check for virus and that's why zero case,  when u have this kind of neighbour is really "suay"

What are you trying to suggest by drawing reference to Thailand and Malaysia? Please be mindful with your words.
