Russia-Ukraine war at a glance: what we know on day 607

Russia making bloody drive for lynchpin town of Avdiivka; all killed in Russian strike on sorting centre were postal workers

Mon 23 Oct 2023

  • Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said the situation in Avdiivka and the nearby town of Maryinka remained “particularly tough. Numerous Russian attacks. But our positions are being held.” Russian forces have made a series of desperate and bloody lunges at the shattered town of Avdiivka, viewed as the gateway to recapturing Russian-held Donetsk and the rest of Donbas, made up of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

  • The US-based Institute for the Study of War has reported that Ukrainian forces in Kherson have crossed from their side of the Dnipro river to take up new positions and pursue Russian forces. The Russians occupy the east bank at Kherson while the west bank remains free and under Ukrainian control, though regularly shelled by the Russians has continued over the weekend. Russia has said that Ukrainian crossing attempts took place.

  • The six people killed in a Russian missile strike on a postal distribution centre in Kharkiv district on Saturday were all postal workers, aged between 19 and 42. Of the 17 injured, seven are in a serious condition, and said to be “fighting for their lives”.

  • The attack was condemned by the US ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Blink, who wrote on X: “The Kremlin’s disregard for life is for all the world to see.”

  • Mitch McConnell offered a strong endorsement on Sunday of the Joe Biden White House’s $106bn (£87bn) aid proposal to Israel and Ukraine, saying he and the president were essentially “in the same place” on the issue.

  • Russian forces shot down three missiles targeting the Crimean peninsula on Sunday, a Russian official said. The peninsula, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014, is crucial to Russia’s military offensive, both for supplying troops in southern Ukraine and for carrying out missile strikes from the sea, AFP reports.

  • It is likely that Russia has suffered 150,000-190,000 permanent casualties (killed or permanently wounded) since the Ukraine war began, according to the latest update from the UK’s Ministry of Defence. If the numbers of temporary wounded (those recovered and due to return to the battlefield) are added, that number rises to 240,000-290,000, the MoD said on X.

  • Russian troops attacked the village of Stanislav in Kherson region overnight on 22 October, damaging over 30 houses, though no casualties were reported.

  • Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said he had spoken with the Emir of Qatar sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to thank Qatar for its humanitarian assistance and mediation in returning home illegally deported Ukrainian children.

UN finds further evidence of Russian war crimes in Ukraine

Report points to ‘wilful killing, torture, rape and other sexual violence, and the deportation of children to the Russian Federation’

Sat 21 Oct 2023

A United Nations investigation has found further evidence that Russian forces committed “indiscriminate attacks” and war crimes in Ukraine, including rape and the deportation of children to Russia.

“The collected evidence further shows that Russian authorities have committed the war crimes of wilful killing, torture, rape and other sexual violence, and the deportation of children to the Russian Federation,” a United Nations commission of inquiry on Ukraine said in a report submitted to the UN general assembly.

“The commission has recently documented attacks that affected civilian objects, such as residential buildings, a railway station, shops, and a warehouse for civilian use, leading to numerous casualties.”

Russia has repeatedly denied targeting civilians and has said Ukrainian allegations of war crimes are concocted.

The commission said it had focused its recent investigations on Kherson and Zaporizhzhia provinces and found “evidence that Russian authorities committed rapes and sexual violence in a district of Kherson province”.

The commission investigated further reports regarding transfers of unaccompanied children by Russian authorities to the Russian Federation or to areas they occupied in Ukraine. It notably documented the transfer of 31 children from Ukraine to the Russian Federation in May 2022, and concluded that it was an unlawful deportation and a war crime.

Self defence has long lost its true meaning after being exploited by the west.  America can claim self defence,  over the stupidiest reasons, but self defence does not apply to its enemies across all sectors. Putin knows it too well when NATO tried to expand territories near Russia borders.

Since when has any country any rights to prevent another independent country from entering any associations or military pacts?

Your point would mean that Indonesia had a right to invade Australia when Australia recently joined the Aukus security pact.

What right of self defence did Russia have when it wasn't even the slightest "attacked" by any other country???

Quote:

Self-defense in international law refers to the inherent right of a State to use of force in response to an armed attack.

What armed attack was there from Ukraine into Russia in February 2022? Please let us know.

Don't use such vocabulary as "self defence" if you are unaware of the nature, meaning and background.

Since America started it to Cuba, for trying to establish military relationship with Russia.  Cuba was sanctioned, among few other south America countries, for decades by the West.   Fortunately, China's rise breathes fresh air and new life into those sanctioned countries.  As such, I believed God existed to turn the table on evil people.

Sweetie Pie, your example with Cuba doesn't match with Ukraine.

Here some questions:

a) Did the US invade Cuba in 1963 with military force and occupy Cuban territory claiming it to be American and annexing it illegally?

b) Did the US fire any missiles or rockets into Cuba?

c) Did the US kill any single Cuban soldier during the conflict?

d) Did the US bomb any civilian or residential buildings, kill civilians or kidnap children in Cuba?

But still Sweetie Pie the Cuba crisis in 1963 doesn't compare with the aggressive attack of Russia to invade Ukraine disrespecting the independent and accepted borders of Ukraine.

The US in 1963 did never physically invade Cuba with military force.

Please note that in the Cuba crisis Russia withdrew their plans after direct negotiations with the US. Cuba wasn't even involved in these talks!

The US in 1963 also never contested the territorial integrity of Cuba.

Your point just doesn't match with the current Ukraine situation.

Why does Russia intend to sacrifice so many of their men for this fight on Avdiivka.

Russian forces are believed to have suffered some of the country’s biggest casualty rates so far this year as a result of continued “heavy but inconclusive” fighting around the Donetsk oblast town of Avdiivka.

Ukraine’s armed forces claimed on Saturday that Russia had lost 298,420 troops since the beginning of its full-scale invasion last year, including 740 casualties in the last day. These figures have not been independently verified.

The intelligence update states that the nature of the operation in Avdiivka indicates that Russia’s “core military-political challenge remains the same as it has throughout most of the war”.

“Political leaders demand more territory to be seized but the military cannot generate the effective operational level offensive action.”

Now I am warmongering?

What nonsensical posts are you now coming up with?

At no point I ever have been a supporter of any war.

Your continuous denial of Russia being the aggressor and the country that invaded Ukraine (without any real reason) is more troubling.

You seem to side with warmongering countries and parties.

Update on the Ukraine situation:

Wed 22 Nov 2023

  • Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine’s troops faced “difficult” defensive operations on parts of the eastern front, as bitter winter cold settles in. But the president added forces in the south were still conducting offensive actions.

  • The death toll from a Russian strike on a Ukrainian hospital in Selydove rose to three people. After Tuesday’s attack, rescuers spent the night clearing rubble and discovered further casualties.

  • The Russian foreign ministry said relations with the US were extremely thin and risked being torn at any moment. Spokesperson Maria Zakharova told reporters Washington’s actions could lead to “unpredictable consequences.”

  • Finland prime minister Petteri Orpo said the country will shut three border crossings after Helsinki accused the Kremlin of pushing hundreds of asylum seekers to the border in recent weeks. It leaves just one crossing open in its 1,340km border with Russia, also the Nato and EU border.

  • Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán, is threatening to block Ukraine’s candidacy for membership of the EU. European leaders will meet on 14 and 15 December to discuss Ukraine’s EU bid.

  • The European Council president, Charles Michel, said he expected a “difficult” meeting next month about Ukraine joining the EU. He promised to do “everything in my power” to make a decision in December.

  • The EU has approved a further €1.5bn (£1.3bn) payment in macro financial assistance to Ukraine. It is the tenth payment made as part of an €18bn programme to keep the Ukrainian economy moving.

  • Russia’s defence ministry said a group of Russian journalists had come under drone attack from Ukrainian forces in the Zaporizhzhia region. It said one reporter received medical treatment but no one was life-threateningly injured.

  • A Russian independent politician was summoned to a local prosecutor’s office after declaring her intention to run in next year’s presidential election. She had been critical of the regime.

  • The Kremlin said there were “no revisions” to its policy of pardoning prisoners in exchange for fighting in Ukraine. It followed local media reports of a Russian “satanist” killer who was released.

  • The Ukrainian air force said it shot down 14 Shahed drones launched by Russian forces overnight. There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.

  • The US voiced concern that Iran may provide Russia with ballistic missiles for use in its war against Ukraine. The national security council spokesperson, John Kirby, said the development would probably be disastrous for the Ukrainian people.

  • The UN human rights office said more than 10,000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion. It expects the real toll is significantly higher

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin pledged further American support for Ukraine during an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Monday, November 20, to stem concerns that help from its biggest ally could waver. The United States has provided over $40 billion in security aid to Ukraine since Russia's invasion and pledged to back Kyiv for "as long as it takes" but opposition from hardline Republicans has raised doubts about the future of US assistance.

Austin announced "another $100 million drawdown... to provide additional artillery munitions, additional interceptors for air defense, and a number of anti-tank weapons" during a press conference at St Michael's Square in Kyiv. In Washington, the State Department said the assistance includes three million rounds of small-arms ammunition and equipment for HIMARS precision rocket launchers.

Do Republicans really intend to risk this?

Yellen says U.S. would be 'responsible for Ukraine's defeat' if aid fails in Congress

By David Lawder December 6, 2023

MEXICO CITY, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Tuesday that the United States would be "responsible for Ukraine's defeat" if Congress fails to approve the Biden administration's latest multi-billion-dollar funding request for the war-torn country.

Yellen told reporters on a trip to Mexico City that the funding - particularly for Ukraine's general government budget support - was "utterly essential" and a pre-condition to keep International Monetary Fund support flowing to Ukraine.

"I've talked to members of Congress, my colleagues have. I think they understand this, that this is a dire situation and we can hold ourselves responsible for Ukraine's defeat if we don't manage to get this funding to Ukraine that's needed, and I'm including direct budget support here because that's utterly essential," Yellen said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's chief of staff said that postponement of the U.S. aid created a "big risk" that Ukraine would lose its nearly two-year-old war against Russia's invasion.

Yellen said the U.S. funding for Ukraine was also essential for U.S. allies in Europe that were providing more generous aid to help Ukraine prevail in its struggle against Russian aggression.

"Ukraine is just running out of money," Yellen said. "They’re spending more than every penny they're taking in, in tax revenue, on military salaries and defense, and they wouldn’t have any schools or hospital or first responders if not for the money we’re sending to them to support them."

Russia confirms 'comprehensive' defence cooperation with North Korea

Russia has established “comprehensive” defence cooperation with North Korea and is continuing its course of “strategic partnership” with India and China, the chief of the Russian general staff, Valery Gerasimov, told a briefing of foreign military attaches on Thursday.

“The course towards developing a comprehensive strategic partnership with China and India continues. Active, comprehensive cooperation has been established with the DPRK,” Gerasimov said in a year-end address, using an official abbreviation for North Korea.

He gave no further details.

as update:

Summary

It’s coming up to 3.30pm in Kyiv, here are the day’s main developments so far:

  • Ukraine’s air defence shot down 34 of 35 Russian drones launched in a major overnight attack on 12 Ukrainian regions, the air force said on Thursday.

  • Ukraine has received the final €1.5bn (£1.3bn) tranche of the €18bn package from the EU, the prime minister, Denys Shmyhal, has said.

  • The latest cohort of Ukrainian soldiers trained in the UK have returned to the frontline “after weeks of intense training”. Britain has helped train 32,000 Ukrainian troops, according to the UK’s Ministry of Defence.

In other developments:

  • Ukraine’s armed forces were taking up a more defensive posture, the UK’s Ministry of Defence said in its latest analysis of the conflict, after their summer counteroffensive failed to achieve a significant breakthrough against Russia’s army and as winter weather sets in after almost 22 months of war. “In recent weeks, Ukraine has mobilised a concerted effort to improve field fortifications as its forces pivot to a more defensive posture along much of the frontline,” the MoD said.

  • Russia’s tax revenue from exports of oil and petroleum products fell by 32% after a price ceiling was enacted by the US and its allies to restrict funding for its war in Ukraine, US authorities said Wednesday. In a statement published by the Treasury department, the allies also announced that rules surrounding the price cap would be tightened.

  • Kyiv plans to produce a million FPV (first-person-view) drones, widely in demand on the frontline, and more than 11,000 medium- and long-range attack drones next year, according to Ukraine’s minister for strategic industries. “All production facilities are ready, and contracting for 2024 begins,” Oleksandr Kamyshin, said on Telegram messenger on Wednesday. The figure includes at least 1,000 drones with a range of more than 600 miles(1,000km), he said.

  • The former TV journalist Yekaterina Duntsova has put her name forward to stand in a Russian presidential election in March that Vladimir Putin is expected to win by a landslide. Duntsova, 40, is calling for an end to the conflict in Ukraine and the release of political prisoners including opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

  • A Russian court fined Alphabet’s Google 4.6bn roubles ($50.84m) for failing to delete so-called “fake” information about the conflict in Ukraine and other topics, the Tass news agency reported. The Ria news agency said the fine had also been imposed due to Google failing to remove “extremist content” and the distribution of what Russia calls “LGBT propaganda”.

  • German federal prosecutors said on Wednesday they were aiming to seize hundreds of millions of euros from an unnamed Russian bank as part of a western crackdown over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. “The aim of these proceedings is to seize more than €720m deposited by a Russian financial institution in a bank account in Frankfurt am Main due to a suspected attempt to violate embargo regulations” under German law, the prosecutors office said.

  • The Kremlin has said there is no current basis for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine and that Kyiv’s proposed peace plan was absurd as it excluded Russia. “We really consider that the topic of negotiations is not relevant right now,” the Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters.

Of course.  Steve5380 is objective and trustworthy.  Haven't you noticed this?  Steve recognized Trump as being a criminal since day one.  And now, after being criminally impeached and four times criminally indicted,  he will be soon a convicted criminal.  Steve similarly recognizes Putin to be a criminal, which he is regardless of any improbable criminal conviction.

Russia accidentally drops bomb on Russian-occupied Luhansk region - official

In the Russian-occupied Luhansk region in eastern Ukraine, a Russian warplane accidentally released a bomb on the town of Rubizhne, Leonid Pasechnik, the head of the region’s Moscow-appointed government, said.

He said the bomb, an FAB-250 that carries a high-explosive warhead, did not cause injuries, the Associated Press reports.

The incident comes only six days after Russia accidentally dropped munitions over the village of Petropavlovka in the Belgorod region.

Russia-Ukraine war at a glance: what we know on day 711

Enemy Tu-95 bomber pilot shot inside Russia, says Ukrainian military intelligence; police target journalists during anti-war protest in Moscow

Sun 4 Feb 2024

  • A Tu-95 bomber pilot has been shot in the Russian city of Engels, according to Ukraine’s military intelligence directorate, the GUR. “The commander of the crew of the Tu-95 strategic bomber, Maj Oleg Sergeevich Stegachyov, was shot … he is directly involved in launching missile strikes on civilian objects in Ukraine and killing our people.” The GUR said it was clarifying whether he survived. “We remind you that retribution awaits all war criminals – we know your names, addresses, car numbers, usual routes and habits.”

  • More than two dozen people, mostly journalists, were detained on Saturday at a protest in central Moscow where wives and other relatives of Russian servicemen mobilised to fight in Ukraine called for their return, according to a Reuters witness and independent Russian news reports.

  • Belgium is asking G7 countries to consider using €260bn in seized Russian assets held by the west as collateral for loans to Ukraine, according to a report in the Financial Times. This would avoid questions around the legality of seizing the assets outright, as has also been considered by Ukraine’s allies, according to the paper.

  • In the US, Republicans in the House of Representatives have put forward a bill funding military aid to Israel, but pointedly excluding Ukraine. The US Senate has already put together a bipartisan compromise bill that covers Israel, Ukraine and US-Mexico border security.

  • Ukraine is close to signing security agreements with France and Germany, with texts being finalised, according to the Ukrainian government.

  • Russia said 20 people died after shelling of the eastern Ukrainian city of Lysychansk, which is under Russian occupation. Ukrainian officials have not made any statement on the incident, but Ukraine has previously stated that it deliberately attacks only military sites, in contrast with Russia’s indiscriminate bombing of civilians.

  • Two Ukrainian drones struck the largest oil refinery in southern Russia on Saturday. Local authorities in Russia said a fire broke out at the Volgograd refinery of the Lukoil company.

  • Ukraine’s air defences downed nine of 14 Russian drones in an attack on Saturday morning that hit energy infrastructure in the city of Kryvyi Rih, the air force and regional officials said.

Russia-Ukraine war at a glance: what we know on day 713

Tue 6 Feb 2024

  • Russia has admitted that one of its senior occupation officials, Alexey Poteleshchenko, was among those killed when a supposed bakery in Russian-held Lysychansk was bombed. The Kremlin had previously characterised the casualties as civilians. Russian state-run news agencies RIA Novosti and Tass have now reported that Poteleshchenko was a former pro-Russian militiaman who, at the time of his death, was minister of emergency situations in the self-proclaimed, Russian-controlled Luhansk People’s Republic.

  • The Ukrainian regional public broadcaster Suspilne Donbas and the Kyiv Independent reported the bakery was set up after the Russian occupation of Lysychansk, and supplied Russian proxy forces, as well as providing a meeting place for Russian-backed officials. Suspilne cited the exiled, Ukrainian-run Lysychansk city military administration as saying: “The arrival [missile strike] was at a time when the occupiers had gathered there.”

  • Russia launched an attack against the Ukrainian city of Kherson on Monday, killing at least four people and injuring one, officials said.

  • The Netherlands’ defence ministry is readying six additional F-16 fighter aircraft for delivery to Ukraine, Kajsa Ollongren, the defence minister has announced.

US Senate approves $95bn aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan

Pre-dawn vote comes amid growing doubts about fate of legislation in Republican-controlled House of Representatives

Tue 13 Feb 2024

After weeks of setbacks and delays, the US Senate gave final approval to a $95m wartime aid package for Ukraine, Israel and other American allies early Tuesday morning, sending the bill to the Republican-controlled House where its fate is uncertain.

In a pre-dawn vote, the Senate passed the measure 70 to 29, easily clearing the 60-vote threshold needed to pass most legislation in the chamber. Nearly all Democrats and 22 Republicans approved the bill, which exposed deep divisions within the GOP over America’s responsibility to its allies and its role on the world stage.

The measure includes $60bn in funding for Ukraine, where soldiers are running out of ammunition as the country seeks to repel Russian troops nearly two years after the invasion.

Are US people happy that their leaders are spending money overseas instead of fixing the problems in US?

The purpose of spending money on their pets is to keep them well-groomed and fed.  If not, American dogs will not bark at the command of their master.   Americans love to keep dogs as their ALLIES companion.

The history built NATO. It was meant as a defence group against the Sovietunion's aggression in Europe.

Sweetie Pie do us a favour and get some history lessons.

It is so terribly obvious that your really lack basic knowledge how things came together.

What was first? The pineapple filling or the tart?

US Senate approves $95bn aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan

Pre-dawn vote comes amid growing doubts about fate of legislation in Republican-controlled House of Representatives

There should be national recourse to gain approval by putting the balls of Mike Johnson in a wise,  and keep closing it until this guy agrees to bring the Senate proposal to the floor.

But there could be an unexpected obstacle:  discovering that Mike Johnson does not have any balls!

What is meant by “history” built NATO? Your phrasing does not make sense.

Yes, this is very possible.  From his childhood when he used to suck on his ballpoint pens...  Twice the little steel balls on the tip of these pens came loose and he swallowed them, and they ended up in the little empty skin sacks hanging from his crotch.

1. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has put up an advisory. I quote certain sections below.

The Police would like to urge members of the public to engage in responsible and respectful discussions on this topic, online or otherwise, and avoid making insensitive or offensive remarks that advocate the political causes of other countries or foreign entities, and instigating or participating in illegal assemblies and marches. We understand the strong sentiments some Singaporeans have on the conflict, but nevertheless, we should not be engaging in discourse, chanting slogans, or carrying out physical protests and demonstrations that could hurt another ethnic or religious community’s feelings, or which are racially offensive in nature, or which could lead to public disorder and societal tensions. If we do not conduct ourselves in a responsible manner over this conflict, it can very easily destroy the precious racial and religious harmony we have in Singapore.

The Police take a very serious view of such acts and will take firm action against any person who makes remarks or acts in a manner which could potentially cause ill-will and hostility between different groups in Singapore, or lead to public disorder.
