Those who can act, can't host, those who can host can't act. To add insult to injury, they even tried very hard to sing, mostly for CNY songs. My sense is this, there could be a mixture of truth and jealousy and some force of reality. Truth is because this was the first time a Chinese host was asked to host a big English programme and such huge responsiblity lies on a newbie (Bryan) in the English Show. Furthermore, Bryan did not cut well as a potato, he still carries his sticky dramas from Ch8 into Ch5. Jealousy, he is young and didn't sit well to his hater from the very beginning of his existence because his wealth derived from his funny characters which disturbed many. His ambition is also not something people take likely, but with his confident to do business, who can stop his dream? Many people wanted to fulfil their dream as early as possible. I can't blame him on this, for trying very hard in his career. Neutrally speaking, everyone wanted to make money in some ways and I see Bryan really working very very hard to give his family a comfortable life because he lost his dad early. So, let's not further tarnish his image or discredit him. If there is not enough viewership, the show will just die off and Mediacorp get the message. Sometimes, we must also understand that mediacorp is very different from other TV stations around the world. It is state run, govt controlled and not indepdendent. If they wanted to give a lousy person opportunity to prove themselves, they will do so regardless of outsiders' opinions, there is inner politics at play here. Quan Yifen is one good examples why she kept hosting many programmes despite her brawls with many incidents outside the TV. She was once a Taiwanese, who is seen talented, natural, and less restricted in her own ways unlike our fearful local talent. Thus she is seen as indispensible to the TV stations even with much negative publicity on her private life. Besides, there are many aunties in Singapore who drools over characters like Bryan and the rest. These are people who have nothing to do in life but watch drama all day long at home. Just like nobody wanted to read newspaper anymore, but the chinese tabloids continue to exist for old uncles idling at coffee shops all nights. The basic mentality is this, mediacorp is not a successful media and we see everyone there as monkey - waiting for instruction, unnatural, and filled with censorship and than we start to dislike everything that churn out from there. Give me Youtube anytime, I love spending my time watching documentary in Youtube and let my TV gather dust for a long as it sit there empty. Quote
