1st Explanation...

"Going commando” is a way of saying that you're not wearing any underwear. The term refers to elite soldiers trained to be ready to fight at a moment's notice. So when you're not wearing any underwear, you're, well, ready to go at any moment — without pesky undies in the way.

2nd Explanation...

It's not totally clear where the term "going commando" came from, but some say it originated during the Vietnam War, when soldiers sometimes avoided wearing underwear to prevent fungal infections when they couldn't shower. But anyone can reap the benefits of ditching underwear.

Going commando is said to have first been mentioned in the 1970s as a slang term on American college campuses around the same time as the Vietnam war. During the Vietnam War, American special forces and soldiers spent extended periods of time in the hot, wet, jungle.

3rd Explanation...

The word was adopted into Afrikaans from interactions with the Portuguese in their nearby African colonies, in whose language the word comando means "command". In South Africa similar troops operated in small detachments, usually traveling on horseback, and launched rapid attacks against British troops.

Elite Soldiers  - Commandos, both local or foreign - out there, what is your take?

Is it still true? Still a current practice while in camp or field trip?

A protocol set by camp officers / instructors?

Or, a past-down culture? Camp norm?

You are cordially invited to share...

Perhaps the sharing by Elite Soldiers ( Commandos) can give an eye-opening / head start for any potential aspiring young men / enlistists who strive to be a commando. 😀

If a person is 'going commando', they are not wearing any underwear.

It is called 'going commando' because of an old practice in the army, where, so you didn't shit your underwear in battle, you didn't wear any - and therefore could boast that you didn't shit your pants.

Hmmm...  if you don't have any underwear on, and you shit,...  don't you shit in your pants?   What is worse, shit in your pants or in your underwear?

The only way to avoid shitting in either of these two,  is to wear a naked butt.   And I doubt that this is accepted in the army.
