The aircraft landed safely with emergency services on stand by and proceeded to the apron, where the passengers disembarked. Only after a large plume of smoke became visible after opening of the cargo bay everyone realised how critical the situation had been. I can say is EK has the coldest service and terrible meals be it ex sin or ex dxb. Anyone feels similar?While airlines upgrade their products, it's the most disappointing when equipment gets changed.One of my cx flight was downgraded ex hkg from B773 to an old A330... Bad luck. ----- why cant life be bigger than facing constraints and making decisions -----

I haven't flown SQ for a while for my biz trips... switched to UA to reach Seoul or Tokyo so that I can do a free stop over in HKG for fun hehe.But the seats on UA are horrible, I always upgrade myself to Eco+

They offered me kitchen towels, hot towels and the leading stewardess came over and apologized at least 3 times. She explained that they do not have laundry vouchers, hence the $75 Kris Shop voucher in place. I think such service certainly sets SQ apart from the budget carriers. After travelling a fair bit, I find the attitude of full service carriers like SQ are out to please customers to make them comfortable while the budget airlines are more to sell to customers. Different personalities.

From an Aviators point of view...the last thing you want in any situation is for panic to set in.Perhaps the words chosen was not ideal...here I think it can be better managed.In the case of cargo smoke or fires....there are procedures to follow...basically is to starve the area of oxygen n snuff any fire out.Its suppose to be able to continue this suppression for quite a prolonged period if I remember maybe even to 120minutes.Its then the decision of where is a good safe play for a successful diversion.. Even after a successful landing n getting to the parking gate...opening the cargo door can introduce oxygen n re igniting the fire is a possible treat.One must make sure the ground staff is alerted of this possibility with the fire fighters ready and in place. So as passengers I hope you can understand people tend to say different things n how they say it can affect everyone. One cannot get too technical as not everyone will understand the lingo.Just curious would you guys prefer that they say....ladies n gentleman our senses indicate the presence of smoke in the cargo compartment.the suppression procedures are in the progress and in the interest of flight safety we need to now divert to Bangkok to have it looked into.Cabin crew prepare the cabin for landing. keke sgbotl 1

My last SQ flight was to London two years back, flew with a friend who was heading there for his final sem. During the meal before our arrival he had a coke spilt on him as he was in the aisle seat. He got a ton of apologies and nothing else, though on his return leg, he did get a comp upgrade to business class, lucky guy. Instagram @the_meowprince

Singapore has quite a bit of aircraft movement , nosurprises there. www.openatc.net This is for listening into air traffic controllers on approach/departure and tower radars. But i can't seem to find any site that will show real time active runway..Check the ATIS, singapore has D-ATIS, so i believe some website able to find realtime updates; or if no access, listen to liveatc.net, u may catch the Singapore Radar giving arriving aircrafts clearance for STAR & Runway in use.

Swissair (SR) stopped operations to SIN when it went bankrupt a few years ago (that was one of the most shameful national emblematic company bankruptcy in Switzerland... very emotional reactions back then) and it's good to see that they are back. Star Alliance company, competing now with SQ for direct flights between SIN and ZRH LX is operating A343 on this route.... Edited May 14, 2013 by Enelym1978

Enelym1978 Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 (edited) it looks good from outside but the A34X series are getting a bit old and worn out in the inside... Airlines usually will not refurb them because it's known to be a non fuel efficient aircraft... The new wide bodies which are better with fuel are the A380, B787 and even the B777. They are fuel-guzzlers.Range-wise, most of the new planes can easily cover the distance, its more of whether there is enough demand to justify the route. Enelym1978 Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Well, SQ is stopping those direct all Biz class flights to the US, which means they will either have to eventually replace the A34X used on those routes or replace them in the future with other aircraft... SIA ordered: 20 A-359 in 2007 and another 20 A-359 in 2012.... that's 40 A-350-900! The initial order from SIA for B787 might be diverted to Scoot... or Silk Air?

Four engines are always better than two.The A350 looks to be a fine looking aircraft, so much better than the dumpy, frumpy A380.

In the past, they wanted to be safe, in case one engine came to fail.... but nowadays, a bi-engine plane can still fly for 500 miles I believe with a single engine, allowing enough time to reach the safest closest airport to emergency land. Not sure about the range it can sustain but I read it once on a "ask the pilot" section of an airline magazine. Even the big A350 only has 2 engines. Ok fine, it's made of super light material but still... What still amazes me at my age (yes I'm old lol), is to see one of these giants take off... the idea of having a 550+ tons of metal lifting from the ground is just amazing! Unless they make bigger planes than a380 or b747. A350 engines are so big, almost like the fuselage of A320 already! Amazing how they do the engine test to fail to ensure engine cowls absorb the pressure and debris. I haven't seen any videos though, probably an industry secret.

Phil Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 Twin engines may be the standard today for some size of aircrafts, since the in flight shut down rate has considerably improved,but...Look at recent failures on B777 GE engines, leading to ETOPS limitations.In spite of all scientific evidences, I sleep better over oceans or hostile areas with four engines. Subjective, ok...

I do share a similar feeling with Enelym1978 though, its really the feeling of seeing+hearing (and if possible, feeling) the thrust and the sheer power needed to lift the birds into the sky. Even though that feeling has subsided some over the years, its still deja vu to feel the VRRRROOOOOM in the plane, or see+hear it overhead, esp from the more powerful planes. I used to grab Day1 invite tix to the last 3 AAs and first SA just to have the satisfaction of enjoying the jets fly past (oops, tmi for now). Instagram @the_meowprince

The concorde stopped operations in our part of the world much much eaerlier...hence HRH Meow was probably a toddler.We had the Malaysians complaining about the sonic boom and saying the fish cannot lay eggs etc...from the press.I believe they had to go subsonic a lot earlier than they like to and perhaps finding it not viable.I remember I was in a classroom in paya Lebar when the concorde took off....the windows were all vibrating the lesson had to be stopped too due to high noise.oops that makes me ancient. OMG!
