I think that after the Concorde crash at CDG, Air France proposed something around 1M € per pax for settlement.

It was a specific group of passengers, and a specific accident...

whenever i'm waiting to board, i've always this uneasy thot that something might happen ... there's this sense of vulnerability being so high up in the air in a flying metal cylinder ... am i weird or what? Does the thot ever cross ur minds too?

I have some near relatives who are like you.

Absolutely no reason to be afraid. The only public transports safer than planes in terms of Passengers x kms are lifts.

Just say to yourself that "its in your mind", have a nice glass of champagne (or whisky, or whatever...) as soon as you can on board (or before boarding...), and enjoy your trip!

Some airlines propose some trainings to fight this fear, with simulator sessions, but it's rather expensive...

Absolutely no reason to be afraid. The only public transports safer than planes in terms of Passengers x kms are lifts.
Just say to yourself that "its in your mind", have a nice glass of champagne (or whisky, or whatever...) as soon as you can on board (or before boarding...), and enjoy your trip!
Some airlines propose some trainings to fight this fear, with simulator sessions, but it's rather expensive...

There is a reason why such are called "phobias", or irrational fears. Personally, I think it is a lot safer flying than walking down the street, esp in cities like Rome or Paris or Madrid, where traffic and drivers are far far more dangerous.

i'm usually not afraid of flying, but a couple of years back i left TPE on SQ when there was a typhoon. yes it wasn't a direct hit so taipei was not that bad, but there were flights cancelled (mainly single aisle jets though) and i just couldn't get SQ6 out of my mind

so i did what i had to do. and requested to change my seat to an aisle seat at the back of the aircraft

You were probably right about the aisle seat (faster evecuation if necessary).

Back of the aircraft? I don't know, it depends on the type of accident...

eh have i been wrong all this while? i really thought that generally the safest seats are the aisle seats nearest to the rear emergency exits. i think i watched something like that on air crash investigation sometime back

yeah all crashes are different (think the korean crash in san francisco had 2 pax at the back killed) that is true so it's not a fail-proof choice. but i have lots of luck flying in and out during typhoons, so it's something i'd really like to know. where i'd be statistically most likely to survive lol

Long ago, a Turkish DC10 crashed in Paris after the efection of a cargo door which had not been correctly closed. The first dead were pax seated in the rear...
But the floor collapsed, and since lots of flight controls were situated along this floor, the aircraft got uncontrollable and all died.
So, it depends, as Marineboy says...
And since the risk is really small, don't think about that, and just travel comfortably, in first class if you can...

Don't worry. Planes are equipped with weather radars allowing them to avoid dangerous areas, and pilots are (generally) not crazy.

went today, only Qatar's 787 on static display.

350 flew overhead when i was in the cab queuing to the exhibition centre

guess haven't make it to tow back for static display.

other than that, business jets, airforce aircrafts and chopper on display like previous years.

IIRC the A350 will only be there the first few trade days only. I think it has already flown off.

Anyway soon you'll see lots of them when SQ gets theirs delivered.

the issue with Etihad is the lack of partners to gain status miles

Expect to pay double of economy fares for more spacious seats , bigger space infront of your legs , but seat s thta ar e between economy and full business class seats, amenity bags, better food than economy, and quiter cabin.

Anyone tried premium economy class on other airlines, do you think SIngapore Airlines are way way behind the competition to offer Premium Economy class so late , when other airlines already have it for ten years.

SIA’s CEO Goh Choon Phong made the announcement at the carrier's fourth quarter and full year earnings briefing on Friday.

The move comes as SIA responds to intense competition in the full service airline space.

SIA is aiming to sell more tickets to a wider group of customers.

The new premium economy class is targeted at business and leisure travellers wanting more legroom than is available in traditional economy class.

SIA had previously said that there were no plans to introduce that category of seats.

Mr Goh said: “A decision was taken last year, having gotten the latest review and also feedback from customers, etcetera -- that we think it's time for us to introduce the premium economy.

“So a lot of work has since been done between then and now, and we're now able to say that we are looking at introducing it in the second half of next year.

“You can rest assured that when we set our mind to do something, it will be done well. And we will, of course, announce the product as it becomes more available, because we're still in the process of finalising some of the details."

No details were given, but analysts said rival carrier Cathay Pacific could serve as inspiration.

The premium economy class accounts for up to 15 per cent of seats on Cathay, and each seat costs double of that in economy.

Paul Yong, vice president of Equity Research at DBS Vickers, said: "We think that they should have done it earlier, but better late than never.

“And the rationale behind it really is that this segment has seen significant acceptance from consumers. We've seen that Cathay Pacific actually introduced this product in the middle of 2012, and seems to have been quite successful."

At its full year results briefing, SIA also spoke on how it plans to meet rising challenges in the airline industry.

It is sticking to its multi-brand strategy, and intends to step out of its home base to set up hubs with joint venture partners Tata Sons and Nok Air in New Delhi and Bangkok, respectively.

Greg Waldron, Asia Managing Editor of Flightglobal, said: "With its use of budget carriers, the SIA group has been able to maintain 50 per cent capacity share out of Changi Airport since the last 10 years. So they've been very successful in defending their capacity at their key hub airport.

“The problem is, I think there have been some issues retaining profitability from this move to Tigerair, from moving people to Scoot. I think that's been an issue for them."

At the same time, SIA will invest US$325 million to upgrade 19 planes -- roughly a fifth of its fleet size.

Those new cabin products, such as new seats, are already available on flights to London and Tokyo.

But once the upgrade is completed, one could soon be flying to places like Hong Kong, Sydney, and San Franscisco on them.

The same 19 planes will also be fitted with the premium economy class seats.

The new cabin class will be first rolled out on SIA's Boeing 777-300ERs, followed by its Airbus A380s, and A350s.

The carrier reported its fourth quarter and full year earnings on Thursday.

For its fiscal fourth quarter ended in March, SIA posted a net profit of S$27 million, down 60 per cent from the same period a year ago.

For the full year ended on March 31, it booked a net profit of S$359.5 million -- a drop of 5.4 per cent from a year ago.

In trade on Friday, SIA's shares closed 0.4 per cent lower at S$10.21.

SQ is a bit slow on this... announcing Premium Eco when all those Middle East airlines announced those super business and first classes.... It's a bit late and, more importantly, it's waaaay too expensive.

SQ's Y classes are already double the price of the likes of CX or OZ for example. And you only earn 10% mileage...

So I really can't imagine SQ selling its Premium Eco between Y and C classes... who would pay for that?

Dont forget that SQ tickets are always cheaper/very competitive if the flight's starting point is from outside of singapore. And i believe more than 50% of SQ's pax are non Singaporean residents. So, they will still get people buying these premium EY seats.

"For its fiscal fourth quarter ended in March, SIA posted a net profit of S$27 million, down 60 per cent from the same period a year ago." - This sounds not too bad, until you find out that the group actually posted an operating loss of around $60m I think. Can't remember if it's in USD or SGD, but either way it's not good.

I think Y+ might work. A very simplistic view would be because many companies have reduced business class travel, so Y+ might be able to pick them up, hence reducing the inevitable drop in yield. Also, I think there is overcapacity ex-SIN now, especially at the back end of the cabin. So unless they use smaller planes (which somehow they have this weird aversion to) or reduce frequencies (which as CX has shown increasing frequencies might just be the way to go) reducing low-yield seats and adding Y+ might just work. SQ is not in a good shape now, so if something is worth a decent shot and stands a chance of being a success I'd say they ought to go for it.

But having said that, it's still going to be a risk because it might cannibalize business demand, but well I think it's less risky than them launching Scoot. Yes it's beneficial to me, but I still think it is just poor business sense.

Anyway I think the recent ultra luxurious premium class a la Etihad shouldn't impact what SQ does, given that they did try something like that half a decade back with Suites. I don't think it was a success though.

Oh but I think they wisest thing they have done recently (although it's nothing much) was to have greater cooperation with Turkish Airlines.

They are introducing economy plus because their business class has become so fancy with corresponding high cost that most companies have downgraded their employees to economy because they'd go bankrupt if they continued to pay what business class costs nowadays. Economy Plus is like going back to the old style of business class, which was much more reasonably priced. So business is the new first, and eco-plus is the new business.

Meanwhile us peasants in the back of the plane continue to get treated worse and worse. You just wait - next thing you know economy class cabins in SQ's 777's will be retrofitted with 10-abreast seating and the SQ spindoctors will be telling everyone how this will benefit them because it will allow for cheaper fares, which of course we'll never see in Singapore. Even SQ economy tickets from Singapore nowadays are priced at silly levels. Sorry SQ, you are good but that not that good. I 've had Krisflyer elite gold status for 10 years but last year I decided that enough is enough with SQ's price gouging of the Singapore market. This year I was downgraded to no-tier status. The money I have been saving by flying other airlines has more than covered the cost of paying for tickets that I would previously have procured through mileage redemption. I got doubly pissed off with SQ a while back when I tried to use my KF miles to buy a ticket on one of their Star Alliance partner airlines. SQ's service fees and taxes were more than the all-in price their partner airlines was selling tickets for on their website.

Shocking ::

Qantas A380 passenger plane with almost full flight , has a burst water pipe midflight , and floods whole economy cabin with water splashing down on passengers like rain fall.

Business class passengers seemed unaffected by the water deluge.

Some passengers described it as their worse nightmare.

Passengers on board a double-decker Qantas A380 airline have spoken of their horror when a torrent of water poured down cabin aisles.

Travellers were settling down for the long-haul flight between Los Angeles and Melbourne when pipes began pouring fresh water into the cabin.

Hollywood actress Yvette Nicole Brown said the incident was "the scariest thing I have ever seen" and she feared the torrent would short-circuit the plane's electrics over the Pacific Ocean.

The star of the movie (500) Days of Summer was flying to Australia when the bizarre incident happened an hour into the journey.

The captain decided to turn the jet around and flew back to Los Angeles' LAX airport.

"It looked like a trickle at first and I thought someone had spilt a soda or pop or something and it just got bigger and bigger and it filled up both aisles," Ms Brown told CNN.

"It literally was like a river running down the aisles of the plane. It was the scariest thing I have ever seen."

The actress said she feared the plane could short out or passengers could be hurt.

"It seemed like a problem to me because it is water and electricity," she said.

"All I kept thinking about was, 'We are over the Pacific and I'm in something that is full of electricity and there is water.'

"The other thing was it was a double-decker plane so I was wondering where the water was going because it flowed by us.

"But I'm thinking there's people below us.

"There's a staircase behind us and sure enough it became a downpour for them."

Qantas says at no point was passenger safety compromised and the jet turned back for the comfort of those on board.

The flight from LA to Australia is 15.5 hours, one of the longest scheduled non-stop flights.

Passengers were offered hotel accommodation in LA while the issue was resolved.

One traveller, Susanna Halliday, tweeted pictures of her sodden seat and of blankets mopping up water on the plane’s staircase.

She posted: "After being rained on during my #Qantas flight I’m in one of the worst hotels I’ve ever stayed at in my life. No sleep for the weary."

The airline said in a statement: "Crew on board did everything they could to help customers, including moving them to unaffected areas and providing spare blankets so they could stay dry."

"We apologise to customers for the inconvenience.

"We are liaising with Airbus to understand what caused this fault."

Brown, although scared, was full of praise for Qantas flight and gate crews, describing them as awesome.......
