Average Salary To Live Comfortably In Singapore

Guest QQ

So sad to read things here. If cannot find rich bf like doctor or banker type, then better slog hard and live a simple no frills life and dont fall sick.

So little savings, how to retire peacefully? Life is tough.

I think the amount isn't the issue here. Rather, it's one's own definition of 'comfortably'. What is comfortable for one might be frugal for another.

And no amount of money, that will be within reach of the average Singaporean, will be enough. As you earn more, you desire more luxury and when you do, you start to realise that the higher salary you're now getting is still insufficient. Look at one of the thread replies about how $6-7k is still a stretch to live 'comfortably'.

The key is to be contented, cheesy and cliche as that might sound. Of course, that doesn't mean one shouldn't aspire for a better life.

There are alternatives too, like looking for passive sources of income. Instead of trying to live comfortably, it might be a better option to budget spending and channel some money into investments. That iPhone isn't going to appreciate in value, but an Apple stock might.

Fifteen years ago your starting pay was $1.6k,after Cpf deductions should be around $1280.

Give $250 to parents per month.

$1280-$250=$1030.

Finance your own part time degree study.

How much is your part time degree study fees??

And you still have roughly $1k left to save you say. So what happen to your food, transport, living and social/luxury expenses?

And I5 years ago cost of living is how much compare to now? Do you still remember how much a plate of chicken rice cost then? How much is your bus/mrt/taxi fare then compare to now 2014?

Not to mention job competition and population density was not as overload as it is now.

Is this the promise and way of life an elected government treat its electorate?

Who is responsible for these inflation/stagnant wage/wealth disparity gap over the years? And who truly get to benefit all the economic revenue of the country over the years?

Opposition say they are not ready to become the new government, when was it ever up to them to made such a claim? The people vote will enable a change in their mentality in due time.

Like hell I'm going to sit and sink in this country that is steer by the current incompetent statesmen.

You forgot to take into account my 3 mth bonus a year and return on investment/interest. And I never start travelling for leisure till I finished my partime study 3 yrs later.

If you don't earn much plus you overspend, don't blame anyone else other than yourself.  There are many opportunities in SG.  The system is fair, open and transparent, unlike those in most other countries in Asia.  With certain skills and the right attitude, nobody will be hungry.

We should share tips on how to live frugally yet still can enjoy life at the same time and stay healthy.

Anyone can share how to cut down on food expenses? What is cheap, healthy and easy to bring to work everyday?

Is it possible to survive well on less than $5 a day?

Probably should look for other expenses to cut.

It is very possible to cut down on food expenses, but is it wise? if not careful, you could end up malnourished.

Food -- be very thick-skinned and organized.  Plan ahead for all the equipment and groceries you need: a medium crock pot or better, a multi-function that can cook rice and make porridge, and a microwave that can bake, containers. Shop for and cook in bulk on weekends, bake your own bread (water and flour, not even yeast if you know how), store daily batches in containers in fridge and don't pay for any outside cooked food again.

isn't it about earn more, spend more and vice versa?

赚多花多

赚少花少

$30 a meal may be expensive for most but probably just small change for others...

i think is important to seek the right balance for yourself in your given situation

be contented and live happy

This forum is not about whether there are poor families that need help in SG.  There are familities who have met with misfortunes that are beyond their control.  They do need subsidies and financial assisstance.  Nbody denies that.  Instead, the discussion is about how young people should focus on their work to earn more and at the same time manage their spending properly so that they do not land themselves in financial misery and then blame everyone else.  Overspending is a bad habit that is solely witthin your control.  As many people have shared here, managing your spending properly does not mean that you become a stingy person.  It is about spending wihtin your means and have money left over each month for savings, insurance and investment.

  • 4 weeks later...

Not easy to save if you have your own house, take care of parents bills, trying to upgrade (study), have multiple hobbies, prefer branded items, keep pets, own car,  and love to socialise...etc

Oooh, sorry!  You mislabeled as "not easy to save"  an abundance of ambitious values or a lack of discipline to give up branded items, pets, socializing, and even own car (in a place with good public transportation like SG).

Everything is relative. I know a guy who makes more than $50,000 a month and then collects another $400,000 in bonus every year. Though he has a house and sport car, he complains all the time about not enough money bec taxes and expenses too high! Once you start to earn more, you start to spend more.....

Just one thought: Live within your means.

Really it is NOT how much you earn but how much you spend.

Most of us have our WANTS - a new apartment, a new car and other desirable items in life.

Have we not yearn for more cash in hand to buy the latest fad......

So it depends on one's perspective on what is a comfortable lifestyle.

I have a friend of mine who belongs to the 月光组。。 (no money by the 3rd week of the month).

He has to clear to many loans - housing, car, renovations ..the list goes on.

So if you have $10 in your hand, you eat at a hawker centre.

With $100, you are tempted to dine in a better restaurant.

So, just have your needs fulfilled and your life will be happier and healthier.

Things to do:

Instead of weekly shopping at the malls, think of other outdoor activities to do..eg. visit the Garden by the Bay and the Marina Barrage.

Borrow a book to read from the lending library.

Learn to cook a new recipe ... yes, cooking is therapeutic.

it's important that you learn to cook well, you will save a lot on food.

Food tastes better because no MSG, just a little touch of sugar or honey.

It's possible to cook 3 delicious and nutritious dishes for S$3 plus - cabbage, tofu soup and 4 to 6 butter prawns with garlic.

Ration and you get 2 meals - lunch and dinner. Each meal is S$1.50 plus.

My food tastes better than what I get from the hawkers.

You post up a govt link when the public has lost trust in them and with your atrocious grasp of English you claim yourself to be a graduate?

Where is the credibility? You could be anyone.

And need I kindly remind you that among the total current bulk of this nation true bred local citizens, undergraduates do not made up the majority of this nation populace?

Have you step beyond your mind confines and look at the other social demographic groups in this country? Is their salary enough for them to get by nowadays?

There is actually nothing special about being a graduate. Nowadays any ah ti ah gao can be a graduate. Look at the number of new universities that are going to be opened. SIT and another one which I can't remember. I think this is really a flawed policy. Yes, some parents might be happy in those few years when the child is in school, but reality will soon set in when their child enters the workforce: low pay & underemployment. I guess there will be more anger and frustration by then.

There is nothing special about uni grads nowadays, not because of the number of new uni that are opening, but more because people with fake degrees can simply come into this country and pretend to be grads.

33 yo, earns 10k a month (after CPF)

Minuses

- 1300 (car)

- 1000 (parents)

- 1000 typical monthly expenses (spending, eating out, petrol, shopping, telco bills)

Left about 6700 monthly savings. Quite comfortable.

And that is suppose to be the average salary of Singaporeans?

Have you read the title of this thread before you post?

Your car expenses was $1300 and your own expenses only $1000, even lesser than your car? Means you are less important than your car hahaha!

For me, car only $1000 and expenses for myself is a lot more than car. I take care and pamper myself with regular massages, good food etc

Yes the expenditure on car ownership is relatively higher than expected.

There is always 2 sets of parking fee - one for home and another at work (assuming you don't get FREE parking).

Above the regular fuel replenishment, loan repayment, road tax and car wash, there is always ad-hoc issues to tackle.

Rich food is NOT good food.

You really don't have to spend alot of money (and time) to eat wisely and economically.

And how much is put aside for massages and other health treatments, once a month each?

We go the gym and now, most gyms come with the standard steam room and Jacuzzi, right?

I think there are other ways to pamper yourself  - visit Gardens by the Bay..an annual membership is only SGD68 for unlimited visits....just don't get near MBS shopping gallery...

RA, I would rather like to invite this person to speak to us.

Tell us how to achieve this?

If he can, he should share this information with us.

The invitation is open and would this person be kind enough to accept it if he has the balls to qualify his statement.

what if by 40 you kenna accident? dun think life is so smooth.

Average person got 25 yrs of good luck and 25 yrs of not-too-good ones.

My uncle very heng from young til 40 - big house, overseas grad, married, drove merc, stayed in Bkt Timah.

From 40 yrs til now - bankrupt, now stay in HDB, drives a 2nd hand Subaru. He 's now in his 60s and life is gonna be a downward spiral from now on.

Need to factor in the unforeseen/misc into a special/emergency fund, other than all the basic expenses like food and lodging.

I also noticed that as I aged, I buy less clothings. Would rather spend it on good food and spiritual needs - books, trips, etc.

Abang as a worldly elder you should know that people like them guard their wealth, network and secrets close to their heart and cliques. They are merely here to boast and flaunt.

Even if they truly want to help they can't change the whole society into them,to do so would bring them down in the end.

Guys, don't go destroy the dreams of 29 year old people can or not? It is good that they have such ambitious targets. Even if they don't reach the moon when they were targeting for the stars, they might still hit the clouds in their attempts. Reality will set in one day, but it is good for people to have dreams when they are still young. And 29 is young.

你这不叫帮是害他们。

You are not helping them in this way only harming them. It's always wiser to err on the side of caution in life for sake of self and others.

Already we have a prince amidst us who are already in his 60s who because he never practise restrain and harbour great ambitions has cause millions of lives to sunk in his quest of achieving his dreams.

Don't become this fucker please.

Make love, Not war

Tips on being frugal:

Less socialising.

Less partying.

Less shopping.

Less branded goods.

Less dining out.

Less overseas travelling.

No smoking.

No car.

No children.

No gambling.

No expensive membership.

Look out for offers, discounts and good bargains.

Save at least a third of your income.

Use your savings to invest or buy insurance.

Stay healthy.

Be contented.

These are tried and tested by me, and I can actually semi retire at quite a young age now without worries if I want.

:)

Having dreams and being cautious are two separate issues. Why can't a 29 year old have dreams and still proceed cautiously? And please don't compare me to that prince. That guy don't even have his own thoughts, much less dreams.

You are those type that won't listen to the words of predecessors and have to live life through your own will, such is the vigour and quality of youth.

I cannot stop you and neither do I want to,whatever the outcome is in time you yourself will come to know and understand. Just made sure your dreams and ambitions is realistic and achievable and in the process toward it don't be selfish or harmful to others. :)

LOL! My dear boy, from what I can remember of your age in your post to Cactus, I am much older than you are! So whose "vigor and quality of youth" were you referring to? Who is whose "predecessors" now? I was speaking from my experience. I had my dreams. I had done things right, and I had done things wrong. But if anything that I had never regretted was to dream big. Because if I cannot even dream big then, I would have only fitted myself into the tiny sad reality of the past. This is what "Life" is all about. You pursue your dreams and your goals. You will need to tamper your dreams along the way with major doses of reality. You will fall along the way, you will be discouraged, but you will also have your youth to drive you along the way. And you will learn from every word of discouragement that you hear, and every fall that you will take. But your "Dreams" and "Ambition" can only take you to higher heights than where you are now (hopefully Morally, which is another separate issue with Dreams and Caution), and not down to any lower levels.

Looks like I need to throw your own words back to you "You are those type that won't listen to the words of predecessors and have to live life through your own will..."

Good night now. This old man needs to sleep already. LOL! :"Vigor and quality of youth" indeed! How I wish so... :D
