Mercutio
Interestingly, her new project, a play, has just opened in Broadway...Did you catch her in concert when she was here? She seemed somewhat jaded. Natural progression, I guess, but far from the wistful dream-diarist she once was. Mercutio
Hey any Ladytron fans out there? I love "Ace of Hz" and they have a new album coming out 'Gravity The Seducer'!!! Mercutio
Anyway it's nice to see other gay Singaporeans interested in alternative genres, instead of the usual handbag pablum. I was living in London when Popstarz, a weekly alternative music gay night, first started during the British alternative renaissance of the mid 90s (Blur, Oasis, Elastica, Supergrass, Manic Street Preachers, Pulp, Suede, Stereo MCs, Stone Roses, FSOL, Skunk Anansie etc.) and it's still going strong. derryfawne
It's about time male vocalists be given the equal thumbs-up! If we're talking vocalist, Axl Rose is just mad. He covers every super low notes, super high notes, and everything in between. Not that the band he fronted doesn't already have Slash, one of the best modern guitarists. Welcome to the Jungle - moshpit to the max, makes me wish I was born in the 1980s and had the first-hand chance to the excitement of witnessing this rock giant at the beginning of their career Estranged - beats beats beats November RainAnd Youtube Don't Cry too, which was the song that got me into Guns n Roses. It's bad enough that we're blamed for all the gay disco and eurodance. Haha... (wait, I do enjoy those too, actually )As much as I like Cyndi Lauper, I won't be able to post her music on this thread, so let's go with something slightly more alternative and tasteful. My God, I have not thought about Traci Lords in years!!With regard to more recent stuff - Hercules & Love Affair is great, especially the tracks Hercules's Theme and Blind. Love the fact that they've returned to the "old school" style of arrangement with specialists at each instrument contributing, instead of having a single person do everything on synth. Cansei de Ser Sexy is also good: Lovefoxx is a hoot, got to hang out with her when she was in Singapore. He kinda dropped off the radar entirely and seems to be not producing any good stuff anymore. SAD His last couple of albums is lackluster, but 2005's Guero contains a lot of good alt-pop numbers. I think Guero is like PJ Harvey's Stories from the City. Both are the artists' most blatantly commercial albums, but they're so well-written it's hard to deny how enjoyable the two albums are from start to end. Guero is Beck's most solid album, although the highlights are not as strong as those from his early days. Quote “Do not take life too seriously. derryfawne
am never tired of hearing hayley william sings:I'm not a fan of Paramore/Hayley. I find her too poppy for my liking, but then again, I love Avril Lavigne... so sue me. These artists are what I'd term as 'borderliners'. They definitely have their roots in the DIY alternative culture, taking their cues from Green Day (which is the commercialized version of Buzzcocks, which in turn is the commercialized version of early punk music). But if you trace down the lines from Avril and Hayley, you'll eventually get to Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus (which are basically just Britney Spears macho-fied).Borderliners are right there in the middle to bridge these tastes, not quite 'alternative' but not quite Pussycat Dolls either, haha. Borderliners are a bit underrated, though. They may not be oh so revolutionary, but c'mon, their knack for irresistible hooks cannot be beaten. Even Liz Phair, the ultimate 1990s dictionary definition of 'indie', admitted once in interview that she wanted to be Avril Lavigne. And so this happened. It must be heard to be believed:Liz Phair - Hot White Cum And the lyrics must be read to be believed:Give it to me, don't give it awayDon't think about what the others sayMy skins getting clear, my hairs so brightAll you do is fxxk me every day and nightYou're my secret beauty routineNa, na, na, na, what my body has seenI am lookin' good and I'm feeling niceBaby you're the best magazine advice(Chorus)Gimme your hot white cumGimme your hot white cumGimme your hot white cumGimme your hot white cumI'm gonna pull you back down between the sheetsEverything is fresher when the day is sweetIn the morning light when you're already on the phoneFace it, one of these daysWithout you I'm just another Dorian GrayIt's the fountain of youthIt's the meaning of lifeSo hot, so sweet, so wet my appetite(Repeat chorus)Face it, one of these daysWithout you I'm just another Dorian GrayIt's the fountain of youthIt's the meaning of lifeBaby you're the best magazine advice(Repeat chorus 2x)Your hot white cumWhat a sellout, but I love it! Avecinfuser
Are you kidding me? Liz Phair is such a crossover popster. She has that one hit wonder thing going on right? After that she's pretty much done for. I rather listen to Fiona Apple or Alanis Morissette who have way more attitude and a distinctive sound. As for PJ Harvey, she's sick sick sick girl!!! Guest Asperger
I have not been contributing to this thread since my initial comment as I felt that my tastes were too mainstream to contribute meaningfully to this wonderful discussion. But some of my favourite singers were mentioned; and so, here are some of my contributions (which are not mind-blowing) to share.Ironically – but, most appropriately, for this thread – Cyndi Lauper is at her best in the years after her popularity waned after her third album. I have and love all her albums (except for the last two, when she did disco and blues consecutively). Especially good were the albums ‘Hat Full of Stars’ and ‘Sisters of Avalon. Managed to watch her the both times she performed here; helps that she is gay-friendly too. A sampling (youtube them!):‘Sally’s Pigeons’ (from ‘Hat Full of Stars’): “I had a fool’s confidence / That the world had no boundaries / But instinct and common sense / Come in different quantities” (Words of wisdom for all of life in a song about illegal abortion, from a Catholic girl)‘You Don’t Know’ (from ‘Sisters of Avalon’): “Relying on rhetoric / Not well-versed on topics / Any idea what you’re talking about? / Revisions of history / Fair well in some company / But don’t shove that bullshit down my throat” (The words that run through my head when I hear people talk in platitudes, clichés and jargon . . . way too common in my industry)My favourite Sinead song: ‘Troy’: “Oh, I love you / God, I love / I’d kill a dragon for you / I’ll die / But I’ll rise / And I will return / The Phoenix from the flame / I have learned / I will rise / And you’ll see me return / Being what I am / There is no other Troy / For me to burn” (The definitive angry white female singer. This song is the definitive vagina music for me.) And while I am at it, here are some other random songs that I would like to suggest:Billie Myer’s ‘Kiss the Rain’: “Kiss the rain / Whenever you need me / Kiss the rain / Whenever I’m gone too long / Keep in mind / We’re under the same skies / And the night / Is as empty for me as for you” (The plaintive clarion call for monogamy in a partner.)Queensryche’s ‘Silent Lucidity’: “l . . . Will be watching over you / I am gonna help you see it through / I . . . will protect you in the night / I am smiling next to you / In silent lucidity” . . . (Hauntingly eerily sweet.)Rufus Wainwright’s ‘Hallelujah’: “All I ever learned from love / Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you” (Such a poignant line that seems relevant for gay relationships as these involve two male prides). Also beautiful versions from Leonard Cohen (the original, actually) and k.d. Lang; sometimes, with slightly different lyrics.Southern Sons ‘Song for Whoever’: “I love you from the bottom of my pencil case” (This quirky opening line says all for the charming goofiness of the song).Tanita Tikaram’s ‘Twist in my Sobriety’: “Look, my eyes are just holograms / Look, your love has drawn red from my hands / From my hands you’ll never be / More than a twist in my sobriety” (Such a wondrous line giving the finger to a past relationship).Sophie B. Hawkins’ “Before I Walk on Fire’: “I don’t want somebody to run to / I don’t want somebody I can shake / Lord I want my dignity again / Before I walk on fire” (The words of this song talks about recovery and finding inner strength . . . I like!)The Williams Brothers heart-rending ode to loss ‘Can’t Cry Hard Enough’: “Gonna open my eyes / And see for the first time / I’ve let go of you like / A child letting go of his kite” (These words always make me tear). This song has also been numerously covered; have yet to hear a version I did not like .Speaking of crossovers, try Scarlett Johansson’s first album ‘Anywhere I Lay My Head’, where she covers Tom Waits. No one memorable song but the whole album has a dreamy listenable vibe to it.Sorry but I do not know how to post youtube links. Anyway, I am always more attracted to a song’s lyrics than melody. But some of my favourite singers were mentioned; and so, here are some of my contributions (which are not mind-blowing) to share.Keep contributing, my friend. You have excellent taste, and the songs you recommend need not be so underground and alternative that only 50 people have heard of them. You can post Youtube videos merely by copying the link from the address bar and pasting it directly to the Post box.I like it that you mentioned Rufus Wainwright. He's such a lovely chap. He's a romantic aj with nice operatic chest voice (although may be too nasally for some people) and baroque-style piano playing. His voice has strong emotional resonance; he pulls off many covers that can almost challenge the original versions (Hallelujah, Across the Universe, Somewhere Over The Rainbow):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrnT2VEsuHcHis originals are no less good. In fact, his sixth studio album (All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu) is probably my most favorite album of 2010 (or, at least, in the Top 5). My favorite song from Rufus is Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk. Quote “Do not take life too seriously. Roads is a masterpiece, 'nuff said. The big hit is, of course, Sour Times. I like how a web reviewer describes this song: ...the chorus goes 'Nobody loves me, it's true' - and it's perhaps the most desperate "nobody loves me!" ever uttered on record. Of course, several seconds later Beth adds "...not like you do", but it's way too late by that time. Edited June 11, 2011 by derryfawne Quote “Do not take life too seriously. derryfawne
What do you all think about the much-publicized battle of the 1990s alternative Britpop (Blur vs Oasis)? For me, Blur emerges as a clear winner, and it's not even close. Blur is a smart band with unpredictable melodic craft. You've all heard Song 2 (the song that parodies the grunge culture, and still outrock most grunge bands) so I'll spare you from that. Instead, I'm posting a lesser-known but no-less-wonderful Beetlebum: My main problem with Oasis is that all their songs sound the same. And while they are melodic, there's nothing about their music that hasn't been done to death before. Their music is also so overproduced to that loudness point whereby your ears are too exhausted to discern what notes the guitars and strings are playing. the drum beats are all swallowed up too. I do like Wonderwall, though. Quote “Do not take life too seriously. You’ll never get out of it alive.” — Elbert Hubbard

A sampling (youtube them!):And while I am at it, here are some other random songs that I would like to suggest:Tanita Tikaram’s ‘Twist in my Sobriety’: “Look, my eyes are just holograms / Look, your love has drawn red from my hands / From my hands you’ll never be / More than a twist in my sobriety” (Such a wondrous line giving the finger to a past relationship).OH BIG BIG FAN of Cyndi Lauper and Tanita Tikaram!!! Have you checked out Tanita's later albums? Love her tone of voice, soulful and tender, this is I Might Be Crying from her Lovers In The City album 1995. Perfection! Also from her 1998 album The Cappuccino Songs the haunting Stop Listening. Quote Only to lie like this between the bombs, dreaming away and not alone, because time was very short. Avecinfuser
Still remember The Cardigans? Any fans out there of this Swedish band with the smooth vocals of Nina Persson and their groundbreaking Lovefool from the album First Band On the Moon? I love Erase and Rewind and My Favourite Game from Gran Turismo 1998 album...I'm such a 90's music person I realised haha. Then The Cardigans took a break and in 2003 Nina Persson released a solo album as A Camp. Totally cool too! derryfawne
I enjoy Cardigans, thou I remember I used to hate them some time ago. Guess the vocalist has a love-it-or-hate-it voice. They remind me a little bit of The Cranberries: Quote “Do not take life too seriously. Was so into their music during my student days, still have their CDs and listen to them from time to time. Even when they started to fade away from the music scene I still enjoyed their music. Every song brings back a memory for me, both good and bad memories. Now I'm going to take out their CD to listen
