Have anyone tried the lao zhang massage, how good is he.

Few weeks ago I had the opportunity to try Lao Zhang. Called him in the afternoon and made an appointment fo him to come over to my hotel room around 10Pm (he couldn't make it any earlier). Reckon this is a part time job for him.

He looks like an office worker uncle - dark rim glasses (kinda sexy),white shirt, sweater and pants. He is a very stocky guy with solid arms and chest. He said he does regular work outs.

Think it was kinda late as he was trying to rush through the massage - although I think he does possess some skills in detecting problem areas in your back/neck etc.

Overall massage could have been better if there was no need to rush - but was pleased to be able to find someone in Beijing for a massage. To me he is quite good looking and a great stocky body but kinda shy.

Would I call him again next time - probably yes and make an earlier appointment if possible.

I use Lao Zhang regularly whenever I visit Beijing. I have not experience him rushing through any session but there are times when he seems too tired to give me a proper massage. But most of the time, I feel that I am given my money's worth. His massage is strong, something that I like. Of course, one of the reason why I use his service repeatedly is he is also a cute bear. I try to avoid slim masseurs, which are prevalent in China. His full time job is also massage and he normally gets off work about 10 pm. If you like oil massage, you need to provide your own oil as he does not bring oil with him.

This sauna is not easy to find so if you are not familiar with Beijing, better call them and ask for directions or call them from a cab and ask them to talk to the cab driver. Bears frequent this place.

Depending on your budget - a good location (near the subway) would be 崇文门饭店or the one opposite 哈德门饭店...both are located very near the shopping areas (you can walk, take a bus or the subway) like 王府井。But if you have a big budget, then you can go to the Hyatt, etc....or at hotels located at 王府井。

Things to do or places to visit - if it is your 1st trip to Beijing, then it would be all the sites - Great Wall, Imperial Palace, Lama Palace, etc etc....so many places. Food - street food, Beijing Duck,....Maybe you can also try to catch a performance at 首都剧场....by 北京人艺。

I will fly into Hangzhou for 3 nights before taking the overnight train to Beijing. I intend to stretch my dollar a little by staying in backpacking places and to see the Olympic stadium, Aquatic Pool, Forbidden City, Great Wall and Tian An Meng. Beijing is a very large city, you may be very far from the places you want to visit.

Let me try to regroup your itininery to save you some time.

For the Imperial Palace you better plan to spend a full day in order to have a thorough tour inside. You can include景山公園 and 北海which is just north of the Palace towards later part of the day.

王府井is the shopping street, east of the palace, can go in the evening, sample the roadside food stalls there at 东单.

Great Wall is a full day tour. Include the Ming Tomb which is on the way.

You can try to take a bus there from 前门，make sure it cover also the ming tomb on the onward journey.

The bus trip is not expensive, can bargain; there are many buses going in the morning, dont take the first offer.

Come back to 前门 in the evening and have your 北京烤鸭 here. Instead you can also visit the前门鐘樓 if you return early from the Great Wall. 前门 is very busy at night, go to the oldest shopping street in 大栅栏，some shops were there since the Ching Dynasty.

Tianjin is 2 hrs away. Its the coastal port city, nothing much to see there actually.

Visit 陶然亭， 大观园，a beautiful replica of the famous mansion in the Chinese Classic 红楼梦。

See the old Beijing, visit some of the last remaining 胡同 and 四合院.

Visit 牛街, see the famous muslim mosque but built in chinese architecture style.

Try 刷羊肉 here, its nice.

Museums - there are just so many, depends on what you wish to see?

Shopping - no Singaporean will miss this.

Try 王府井, 东单, 西单。

Go to 旒璃街 for chinese arts and craft pieces.

Go to a chinese teahouse, soak into the 老北京 atmosphere.

Or go to a local bathhouse and get a bodyscrub for $2 (yes, its very crowded and you are scrubed together with another 5 or 6 guys on stone benches, infront of the crowd like everyone else, fully naked)

Try the parks in evening to see how the local cruise, but be alert of pickpockets and MBs

日坛公园 would be nice to start; usually from 5pm to 7pm is the busiest.

Try to use the subway and buses, they are really cheap and quite efficient. Since you are going in late spring, its not too bad its still quite cool. Mid summer is terrible if you are stucked in a crowded bus or train.17 April 2009 (Fri)

Cool. Seems Lao Zhang can be a good option if he's not too tired.

I've always used Spa De Feng For Men Only, for several reasons:

There are plenty of youth hostels (YHA) in Beijing.

I stayed at the 9 Dragons Hostel which was pretty central and most importantly, in a hu-tong/alley.

You really feel like a local there.

It is about 4 stations to Tian An Men, City gates where the Imperial Palace...good location as it is a mere 3 minutes from the nearest subway station..
