I've accepted that Singapore is small. I think anyone going to an onsen or a public bath of a similar concept signs the metaphorical contract that everyone's going to be naked, so while it be might awkward to bump into someone you know in real life, everyone's under those same conditions and is there in the same context. I feel like we've been conditioned to be embarrassed about our bodies by default, when I feel like we shouldn't be, but there's also an appropriate time and place for everything. An onsen is not inherently meant to be sexual, and I think it is possible to separate nudity from sexuality, but I think especially in more repressed societies, that separation can be difficult to maintain.

There are a bunch of factors and I can only speak from personal experience. I think Singapore is just generally repressed - because there are few opportunities to meaningfully discuss sex and intimacy, everything just gets swept under the rug. Sex becomes something people only joke about. This definitely happens in many other places too, but I think in Singapore, the shame is very much built in - the shame is built into heteronormative sex, let alone anything outside that definition. I don't know why things have changed between then and now, but I think the increase in body image issues being exacerbated by beauty standards in the media could also be leading people to feel less confident about their bodies and preferring shorts over trunks, for example. Unfortunately, I think there also is the fear-mongering of the stereotype of the predatory gay man waiting to pounce on straight people, that gets repeated in a lot of Singaporean online spaces and has perhaps gotten louder as discussion about LGBTQ+ issues in Singapore has become more mainstream.
